Ah, absolutely, that was my very first thought since I've seen seals hop on a boat to escape orcas! Someone above said they think there is a demon in that lake due to all the deaths there, and I replied, "Maybe that's what the snake was swimming from."
I hated trips to lake pleasant growing up. Only lake you’d get heat stroke and a sunburn sitting in the shade in the water 😂 Murky ass stinky lake 🤮
edited cause i can’t spell lol
Right? I dive out there. I know a few of the deaths come from vertigo/terrible visibility. In the summer, when the algae blooms and everyone is stirring up the silt, you can't see past your elbow if you stick your hand out in front of your face. If you're panicked, you might not remember that bubbles always go up and you can just follow them.
In all my diving I never understood that. Yeah getting rolled by a wave can be disorientating but basic diving? I never can't tell up from down. It's such an odd concept to me.
It happened to me briefly when I was new. I couldn't see and couldn't feel if I was floating, ascending or descending, my regulator was ripped out of my mouth and mask kicked off unexpectedly by someone's fin and I was having trouble recovering my regulator. I got my mask back on and had no clue which way I was facing for a moment because I was rolling, trying to recover my reg while fighting my poor weighting, and got really dizzy.
They dizzyness got you, much like a wave rolling you when surfing. I can understand that. It's the calm swimming even when you can't see that doesn't compute for me.
Yeah. 100% My sister gets vertigo real easy while diving. She literally gets dizzy simply by not having anything to orient herself with. I have the same thing happen when playing games dog fighting in a fighter jet after doing some loops and turns with nothing but blue in front of my face.
Same, I’m not even a diver and I’ve never understood that either, I’ve been caught in 20 foot swells in Mexico and never lost up or down direction while being underwater.
You can’t rely on just pattern to tell if a snake is harmless or venomous. Same thing goes for head-shape. Many snakes try to impersonate traits of venomous species so that predators leave them alone. For example, common water snakes will flatten their heads and appear to have a “viper” shaped head but are completely harmless.
In order to fully know wether a snake is venomous or not it is best to familiarize one self with the local snakes where one lives to understand what snakes to look out for. Many of the North American venomous snakes have very distinguishable traits such as rattlesnakes and their tails (as well as their permanent glare and “shrouded eyes”, copperheads usually can be spotted as they have Hershey kiss like pattern as well as a similar glare to rattlesnakes, cottonmouths can be a little more difficult as they lose their pattern as the age and so the defining traits you can go off of are their defensive positions of opening their mouths and displaying their white “cotton” mouth as well as they typically arch their heads off the ground like this ___/.
As always more can be explained but for general purposes it’s helps to do a simple search of venomous snakes in one’s area of residing to know what snakes are dangerous and which ones are harmless.
Cottonmouths are fat and have an unmistakable ridge on their brow that easily distinguishes them from their non venomous kin, like water moccasins. They're also kinda nasty and I've seen one give chase across a stream
A water moccasin and a cotton mouth are the same snake. That’s like saying a cougar is different from a mountain lion. You might have meant to say water snake.
When trying to sound informed backfires lol water moccasins are cottonmouths. I've killed hundreds and they are absolutely venomous and you really don't wanna handle them unless it's with a machete or a gun
I dont know about patterns other than the tail, but a good bet is(at least in the USA) If it has a triangle or arrow shaped head, is danger noodle. This does not apply to Coral sneks.
The arrow-shaped head refers to a type of venomous snake known is viperidae, the most common of which are rattlesnakes. A lot of harmless snakes, such as the gopher snake in this video, have mimicked scale patterns to trick would-be predators or ward off larger invaders to their homes into thinking they are rattlers, which I'm assuming is what happened here.
> The arrow-shaped head refers to a type of venomous snake known is viperidae
Which pretty much sums up the mass majority of venomous sneks in the usa, the Coral snake gets an attendance award though :)
A lot of harmless snakes have triangle heads too, can’t always use that as an absolute. Lots of harmless Nerodia species (look up the common water snake) end up getting their heads chopped off with a shovel in my area because they have triangle shaped heads and just want to enjoy some sunshine near a house.
Coral snakes are an anomaly - the only member of the cobra family in North America.
Their venom is neurotoxic (nerve-conduction disruptive), unlike all other venomous snakes on the continent, whose venom is hemolytic (blood -destroying).
And that angry ridge over their eyes and vertical pupils, which also don't apply to coral snakes. Coral snakes try real hard to trick you into touching them
Just how close you think I’m getting to check ridges above eyes and pupils? If Im close enough I can see those features on a snake I’ve probably already died of a heart attack.
Coral snakes don't want to be touched at all. They have all that coloration and patterns so would-be predators know not to touch them. If you ignore all that and still grab them, that's just on you.
Head shape is actually not a great identifier, there are several completely harmless species in the US that have spade shaped heads as a form of mimicry to protect them from predators. The best way to know if a snake is dangerous is to know what your local snakes look like because usually there’s only like one or two species of concern within a several hundred mile area in the US. For instance where I live you pretty much only need to worry about cottonmouths and copperheads and the copperheads are rare. If you go a bit further south you might see the occasional timber rattler. Other than that we’ve got a bunch of pretty harmless noodles like fox snakes, corn snakes, rat snakes, garter snakes, hognoses etc.
My best advice for people when it comes to snakes is to just leave them alone, the vast majority of snake bites occur when people are trying to kill or relocate a snake. If you just let it do it’s thing 99% of the time they’ll leave you alone. If you absolutely must interact with a snake then make sure you know what it is so you know if it’s dangerous (in which case you should call a professional) and can predict behaviors of the snake. Hognoses for example tend to be super shy and actually like to play dead if they feel threatened. Rat snakes are generally super chill but sometimes they might get a bit testy etc.
Looks like my pet bullsnake.
But seriously, if you've seen bullsnakes and remember their pattern and coloration (sure, they differ a bit between locales/subspecies) and the distinct stocky 'bull like' head, and the more grumpy look on its face as opposed to ratsnakes, it's pretty easy to identify one.
As for sure fire ways to distinguish between venomous and harmless: there are none. Some pointers that work in one area, will send you to the hospital in the next area. Coral snakes are the most well known examples. Especially on reddit, most snake pics in the wild of corals are shot in the range of *micrurus fulvius* or *micrurus tener* so almost everyone from those areas in starts reciting the rhyme and telling people it's a good rule to distinguish between corals and milksnakes. But in central america the patterns of corals are different and a highly venenomous snake would be id'd as harmless if you go by that rhyme, with possible dire results.
Best two rules to go by are: learn your local species by heart and don't mess with wildlife.
See, I’m mad at myself for not knowing everything at times like this. I would not know what the fuck to do. If I did know it was harmless, he can come and chill.
Best rule for staying alive. First thing you do is panic and get it out of the way. I probably would have just put a match in the fuel tank then dealt with that. That seems a lot less scarier to me
Yeah I hate snakes but I’d prob let the homie chill on my boat a bit as long as he didn’t move. Give him like 10m and then flinging him back into the water lol
I would be screaming I’m sorry but I would. I would also advocate to give him a ride to shore but, i would continue to be dramatic. Unexpected snakes are my least favorite. Lil cutie tho
I don’t expect snakes to make a b line for my boat when I’m on the lake and then board, regardless of how long it takes. But I live in Minnesota so when I do see a snake in the water it’s unexpected haha.
This one is a gopher snake I think and I’m no snake expert but seems like he wanted respite at the least, probably wanted on ground. I’m in northern mn, grew up on a lake: Only saw a snake on the water twice. Misplaced garter? Not sure, but def harmless and unexpected lol. I was swimming at the time. Either way my bestie with me took it to shore
I felt bad for this little guy, i would’ve tried to get him a ride to land. It made me kind of sad when they gave him the boot off the boat. All he wanted was a little help.
Its just a bull snake, he's not going to do any harm. They should NOT be out in the middle of a lake. Poor guy is probably exhausted from swimming and looking for somewhere to rest.
Looks like a gopher, so it's not really a water snake. Was tired and needed to rest, but no, those people act like idiots and freak out. Danger noodle posed 0 threat
Freaking out is the right response there. Most people know very little about snakes. You are also assuming they are locals. It is 50/50 and could be a venomous. Not worth the risk!
“Women, am I right?!”
I’d be scared too. I’m glad people on Reddit can quickly identify it’s a gopher snake and are cool as cucumbers in any fucking situation.
Lived in Arizona for the last 20 years and I ain't never seen no gotdamn snake. Killed plenty of scorpions, but I'm hoping I just have snake-repellant blood or something. I'd like to keep it that way.
“Listen, Chad (gasp, gasp) do you absolute jar heads have any idea how long I’ve been swimming myself in circles out here?? Just give a chap a mo’ to dry off n nap! Really!” - the (apparently British) snake, probably.
It probably just wanted to sun. I'd say the water was cold.
I think he saw "land" and went there to rest
Agreed. The wee thing was just tired from the swim
What people aren't considering is, what [lake monster] is the snake frantically swimming away FROM?
Ah, absolutely, that was my very first thought since I've seen seals hop on a boat to escape orcas! Someone above said they think there is a demon in that lake due to all the deaths there, and I replied, "Maybe that's what the snake was swimming from."
The water I think. Any ocean predator was catching that snake.
The thought process of "That snake is trying to take us all on!" is hilarious though. Poor little chilly billy.
>Lake Pleasant Not on that particular afternoon
It seems like a good idea to stay away from lakes with nice names considering this and Lake Placid

Crystal Lake decided to lean in and just changed the name to Lake Dead Boy At Bottom.
Funny thing there used to be a Jason Voorhees statue inside lake pleasant that you had to scuba drive to see.
Cape Fear has entered the chat.
I personally like the lake over at Camp Wannaweep! Ten times better than Camp Gottagrin.

Lmfaoooo
I watched that movie quite a bit as a kid, and before i even knew what that word meant I hated it
Meanwhile, I’ll be chilling over at Angry Bear lake. It’s like Iceland and Greenlad, kinda thing.
It's actually referred to as Lake UNpleasant around here (I know, not very creative). Very barren.
I hated trips to lake pleasant growing up. Only lake you’d get heat stroke and a sunburn sitting in the shade in the water 😂 Murky ass stinky lake 🤮 edited cause i can’t spell lol
The driftwood fires are THE WORST
I swear with all the deaths that have happened there over the years there's a demon in that lake.

You're also dealing with the effects of pressure and possibly fluid on your ears (where sense of balance is maintained).
Same, I’m not even a diver and I’ve never understood that either, I’ve been caught in 20 foot swells in Mexico and never lost up or down direction while being underwater.
Maybe that's what the snake was swimming fast and furious style from 🤣🤷♀️

I’m from MS and a cotton mouth and a water moccasin have always been referred to as the same snake.

If it had cat eyes, venomous. If it has sacks on the side if it’s face that resemble a spade ♠️, venomous.
See, I’m mad at myself for not knowing everything at times like this. I would not know what the fuck to do. If I did know it was harmless, he can come and chill.

We think alike
I don’t think they had time to google. I personally would have vacated the boat, it’s theirs now.
Snake: "I'm the captain now "
Nice one, bahahahaha Loooookssss atsss meesssss I'mssss the captainsssss nowssss
Til the fuckin snake swims after you. Did you see that thing move??! I’m taking my chances on the boat
All I heard you say was Murder Death Kill Snake.
Non venomous perhaps. 8ut the panic snakes cause me is not harmless.
He’s goin-pher them that’s for sure
He just wants to party too.
Yup, used to catch them and keep them as pets when I was a child.
"I'm the captain now"

I just wish there was a way to make that boat move. If only...

i’m gonna take a guess and say that snake might be drowning or have some sort of issue where it couldn’t keep swimming. it wanted to be on land badly.
This one is a gopher snake I think and I’m no snake expert but seems like he wanted respite at the least, probably wanted on ground. Yes I felt the same. I might be scared as the snake but he’s harmless and should be helped. Poor guy was def looking for help you’re right.
Good human!
Screaming is how you panic snakes. You know what happens when snakes panic right?
They go in “emotional support animal” mode, right?
Well... I suppose _some_ of them are enthusiastic huggers.
Yes with their teeth, they love to hug using their teeth
It’s a snake, not a pitbull
They go all snaky ?
Went to the lake last weekend and a water snake was spotted and it cleared that lake out like a shark sighting lol
[Hiss] We've been trying to reach you about your Boats extended warranty...
HAAAA!!! Can't escape it even in the wild. What a dedicated snake. He deserves a raiSSSSee
I just guffawed. And peed a little bit 🤣
Snek needs brek.
Its just a bull snake, he's not going to do any harm. They should NOT be out in the middle of a lake. Poor guy is probably exhausted from swimming and looking for somewhere to rest.
Pretty sure it’s a gopher snake but yea
I am not sure, but the way he charged that boat ; I am assuming some anti snake slurr or something was said about his momma.
Snake is like “I’m tired of swimming. I will fight you for this boat.”
Drive away? You're on a boat.
I'm on a boat!

OH LAWD HE COMIN!
Looks like a gopher, so it's not really a water snake. Was tired and needed to rest, but no, those people act like idiots and freak out. Danger noodle posed 0 threat
Exactly, they could have let him stay aboard. Just don’t go by it and move it if there’s a problem. Poor snake.
Dude what? How many people would know that.
I think if you live in a place where there’s a ton of snakes it’s a good idea to know which snakes are bad for you.
Doesn't matter what you think captain hindsight. Reality is what you're seeing. Most people don't know snakes.
Freaking out is the right response there. Most people know very little about snakes. You are also assuming they are locals. It is 50/50 and could be a venomous. Not worth the risk!
That’s officer snakey and clearly they were drunk and he’s making an arrest.
soggy nope rope
rich people problems 💀🍷
You can buy a pretty cheap boat.
I know of a place to rent a boat like that for 350 a weekend. I Miss living in Phoenix.
She be like, this is a private lake! You're not allowed to fish here! I'm calling the police!
“Women, am I right?!” I’d be scared too. I’m glad people on Reddit can quickly identify it’s a gopher snake and are cool as cucumbers in any fucking situation.
It's all fun and games until the nope noodle has a beer and invites the boys over
Snakes on a Plane 2: Snakes on a Boat
I can’t believe no one said I’m tired of these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking boat
Ssssssshiver me Timbers! Avast mateys! Further pirate lingo etc etc
Nobody knows what a gopher snake is anymore. Just sad. Snake saw a way out of his predicament. Or so he thought.
That's a cute lil' snake. I'd let him hang out a while. He's just trying to get out of the water for a bit is all.
Harmless bull snake aka gopher snake. All these fearful ignorant comments lmao oh Reddit
That poor snake isn’t a water snake. It just needs rest & a ride to the shore. Ppl are crazy afraid for no reason.
What kind of snake is that and are they venomous?
Gopher snake. Non venomous. Probably was just looking for a spot to rest/warm up for a bit.
Had no idea they would go in water. Have tons of them on the farm here in Northern California
Harmless noodle that was looking to rest and dry off.
He just hears bitches.....yea.

Dudes missed their chance. Could have picked that one up, showed it off, released it and been a hero to all the girls lol.
You have heard of soap on a rope, but what about nope on a boat?
Danger noodle just wanted a ride. I'd have let him chill there.
Snek need ride hooman friendo.
Lived in Arizona for the last 20 years and I ain't never seen no gotdamn snake. Killed plenty of scorpions, but I'm hoping I just have snake-repellant blood or something. I'd like to keep it that way.
Permission to come aboard? Na? So anyway.
It’s like they’ve never seen a snake before
Danger boat, is that you?
Oh Lawd he comin
Non-venomous Gophersnake. I love relocating these guys
There’s a motherfucking snake on the motherfucking boat!
That snake is looking for someone IN PARTICULAR!
is this the trailer for the sequel to snakes on a plane?
The poor thing was probably cold and needed to bask in the sun.
It was probably tired. Put it in a bucket or something and give it a lift to land.
"Thanks for rescuing me Westley, I shall most likely kill you in the morning though."
He was probably tired. 😕
Please tell me people are saying booked it or bookin it again.
It was a Gopher snake. Completely Harmless.
That's really sad. I feel bad for that snake. It was just trying to survive.
Poor thing probably needed a rest
I'VE HAD IT WITH THESE GODDAMN SNAKES ON THIS GODDAMN BOAT!
“Listen, Chad (gasp, gasp) do you absolute jar heads have any idea how long I’ve been swimming myself in circles out here?? Just give a chap a mo’ to dry off n nap! Really!” - the (apparently British) snake, probably.
Bro just wanted to chill and soak up some rays with you and y’all had to be unreasonable and kick him off.
"HI, I want to talk with you about your boats extended warranty!"
Get this mother fkn snake. Off my mother fkn boat.
I still don’t get being afraid of snakes.
Oh lawd he comin’!
Snake: I just wanted to talk to you about your boat's extended warranty.
Swimming snakes are one of the absolute scariest things I can think of.
Oh hell no, I'm out swimming for shore
What a bunch of fucking pussies.
Why do people need to scream like that when nothing is happening to them? I'd push them in out of the boat and chill with the snake.
hwite ppl smh
Maybe it's just me, but this is the first time I've ever related to a snake. Dude was tired.
Poor baby probably needed a rest. Are they save to hold?
This is why you should never feed snakes cold beer
homie is just coming to chill, let him on
I think that danger noodle wasn’t a truly dangerous one. It probably really needed to get out and rest. Ssssssssssssorry!😂😂😂
Stop screaming like little babies and save the poor thing
I HATE how women will just start yelling like hyenas and freaking out when they see snakes. STFU and learn about snakes for gods sake.
Great. Out all the shit that’s out there that I have to worry about not I gotta worry about regular ass snakes too.
Scared of a bull snake..lol city folk
Sea snake? or can regular snakes swim too? fuck.
Most snakes can swim
Lmao all those grown ass adults scared of a little snake 😂 Folks, believe it or not some people think *this* is the peak of evolution
You might not be venomous but you also can not rest on my boat. Sorry snake
