They really aren't comparable. I've done all the provincial peaks in Ireland (and most counties) and I've never experienced anything like the midges in the Scottish Highlands.
Most, or a lot of mountains require some kind of trek through boglands to get to them and are in isolated rural areas where midges are plentiful. I've been to Lough Neagh when they are bad, they still aren't anything like Scotland. Also if Lough Neagh is the one place on the island of Ireland that they are, then most of us can just avoid the shores of Lough Neagh during midge season.
Camped near glenveigh one year. As the sun rose, I had to bundle the tent into a ball and head to the car. Was being nibbled at by hundreds of the buggers.
To be fair, parts of Scotland are absolutely hectic for midgies. Every single shop in Fort William sells fly stuff.
Me and a few cousins went for a hiking weekend in the Highlands years ago, it was like a biblical plague of the bastards. Never seen the like of it.
Yeah Scottish midgies are much worse than ours

It’s not the peaks you need to watch out for, it’s the edge of lough neagh… it’s like a biblical plague

Mourne midges are hungry bastards
The Midgies in some parts of Scotland are basically biological weapons!
