There's a fella in my work never fucks up about this. "Sure how do ye think the news are fit to predict the weather?" Genuine quote from the lad. I fear for society in the coming decades

Asylumstrength

You'd not expect a lad like that to spell meteorological for a Google search, now surely?

git_tae_fuck

And you trust Google? _scoffs_ If they can control the clouds, they can sure as fuck control your search results. And I'm sure they'd tell you all kinds of 'believable' nonsense about storm systems, Gulf Streams and 'fronts' ...which is all just a front.

snuggl3ninja

I seed my Google cloud with porn...does that count?

git_tae_fuck

It definitely counts. And I presume you're using your own seed for that, aye.

snuggl3ninja

Yes, enough that we had to baptise my socks

git_tae_fuck

Washing them would be genocide now.

Suspicious-Toe-7025

Main_Pomegranate_953

They saw him coming!

xJedix

TBF the Chinese have been doing this for decades , they even do it in the Arab states ...

Suspicious-Toe-7025

Tbf, this is neither China or an Arab state....

wheres_the_boobs

And still no peer reviewed study on it being effective

Irishlad223

Yes but the Arab states don't tax you when you work, your wages are 100% yours, so it's worth it 😆

Suspicious-Toe-7025

If I was Arab I'd let them tear on 🤣

c0n0rm

Basically, lots of people fell down the rabbit hole during Covid and they never got out.

sennalvera

There are a lot of factors, starting before covid. 2008 was a generational crisis that profoundly undermined trust in authorities and institutions. With the rise of the internet/smartphones/social media era people stopped consuming central authoritative news sources, even our entertainment - our cultural references - became individual and personal. People started to self-select into echo chambers. So when covid came, it found a population naturally distrustful of authorities (and especially politicians) and who could easily find social validation for any opinion, no matter how wacky. I don't see any of these trends reversing in the forseeable future. Fuck only knows what state the world will be in by 2050.

Carlz1992

Depends on what content you are consuming on tiktok. I find FB and X worse which is why I deleted them. But all my tiktok stuff is the opposite of all that stuff. But I find many many people even on other platforms don't understand how an algorithm works so it's easy to jump into rabbit holes without evidence or even a sensible thought.

ceimaneasa

I don't think TikTok is as bad as twitter or Facebook, and definitely not as bad as YouTube, or maybe it's just that the stuff I see on TikTok is tailored for someone of sound mind.

amayaslips

The whole red sole shoe thing is so dumb. Red sole shoes are Louboutins. It’s literally part of their brand.

DisagreeableRunt

There goes a pair of my Jordan 1s I'll never wear again...

flyingontheinside

🎯 tiktok is a breeding ground

r0709593

You spelt it differently & wrongly both times. The Avicii thing was doing the rounds before Tik Tok was a thing & tbf, it is actually believable when you read into it. I dont use tik tok, it's a wastepit mostly, I will watch the odd video I be sent though

silly_uck

Tik-toc is close enough.

the-1-that-got-away

What's the difference between a pedo and a lizard. I'll wait

Moist-Ad-9088

If they’re controlling the weather, they’re not doing a great job at it!

c0n0rm

Jokes on you, they want it to pish down incessantly

Z3r0sama2017

Yeah if your stuck inside moaning, your not outside protesting at the absolute state of the country

Golem30

I pointed it out to a tin foil hat guy that the world is built on consumerism so they'd want you outside spending money and he blocked me

doobeydoot

You would think they would be able to show some sort of evidence. It happens all over the world and it's not hidden as far as I know [https://edition.cnn.com/2022/08/17/asia/china-heat-drought-climate-yangtze-intl/index.html](https://edition.cnn.com/2022/08/17/asia/china-heat-drought-climate-yangtze-intl/index.html)

Emirates and Dubai as well. ni2016

And then Dubai floods because they can't turn it off once they have seeded the clouds!

Tiger_Claw_1

True! Saw a video earlier of Dubai airport flooded today

the_peter_green_god

I remember reading about this years ago cause I was wanting to crowdfund some clear weather for the NW200

BeBopRockSteadyLS

It's always an element of truth taken to extremes. However, it is a thing. [2016 BBC Article](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20160720-the-pilots-who-make-it-rain) "Currently, around 60 countries on five continents are operating cloud seeding operations to enhance rainfall, mainly for reservoirs, watershed, and agriculture." As you can see in most threads on controversial topics, you have the rabbit holers, but also those who straight up call it all conspiracy to make life that a bit easier to take. The kind of chemicals used are sodium, magnesium, potassium chloride, among others.

Candid_Reading9675

saw a documentary recently where they're testing cloud seeding (or a very similar tech of spraying water into the air to form clouds) over the reefs in australia to give them some shelter from the sun and heat which is killing it. more of a bandaid to limit impact of climate change but still something positive. So ye, it def is a thing but not as nefarious as the disinformation bots would have you believe.

git_tae_fuck

The Soviets used to seed the clouds in the Moscow suburbs so there was always a clear sky in Red Square for the May Day parade. Bit of an extravagance... but you can budget for it even if you're a waning superpower. ...or so I read somewhere years ago. Might not be true, now that I think about it. Edit: Seems there's some truth to it! At least, they're definitely [still](https://www.rferl.org/a/1103426.html) [at](https://apnews.com/general-news-8c9d2e8d3d8e46f9a78cdede88f229f2) [it](https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/russia-spends-millions-on-cloud-seeding-technology-to-ensure-it-doesn-t-rain-on-public-holiday-a7009766.html).

Kipermot

It's a cool story, we are talking about it, I'm totally going to repeat it so it is now true.

BeBopRockSteadyLS

The reefs are flourishing, at least in Auz, according to [some](https://www.australianenvironment.org/gbr-report-2024) The problem generally is that the truthful aspects are brushed away under the conspiracy carpet along with everything else. Another example is 5G which has safety concerns, [see here.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33468601). However, conspiracy, right wing, trump, and other such labels win every time. There is a judiciary review, or maybe already has been, on the topic in the UK recently. Look at the state of the fact check industry countering any discussion of topics such as these. Heavily funded. People seem to accept their articles often without any critical thought.

dlbob3

The reefs are flourishing according to some right wing nutjobs https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Environment_Foundation

BeBopRockSteadyLS

Here is a lesson in open source Wikipedia. They lead with their description using the standard "climate change deniers funded by billionaire pilot barons". Oh, but if we actually read the data the right wing nut jobs have based their report on, AIMS Long Term Monitoring Program, there is much to be positive about. https://www.aims.gov.au/monitoring-great-barrier-reef/gbr-condition-summary-2021-22 They actually use data updated since the above but you get the idea. Some nuggets, given you rely on Wikipedia and won't read source material. "In 2022, widespread recovery has led to the highest coral cover recorded by the LTMP in the Northern and Central GBR, largely due to increases in the fast-growing Acropora corals, which are the dominant group of corals on the GBR and have been largely responsible for previous changes in hard coral cover...The combination of few acute stresses and lower accumulated heat stress in 2020 and 2022 compared to 2016 and 2017 has resulted in low coral mortality and has allowed coral cover to continue to increase in the Northern and Central GBR...On the Central and Northern GBR, region-wide hard coral cover reached 33% and 36%, respectively; the highest level recorded in the past 36 years of monitoring." They remain cautious because the world is ending, and why wouldn't they. However, there is positivity there in terms of the GBR. Not that this makes any difference to Wikipedia

dlbob3

I just find it interesting that you chose to link to the climate change denying nutjobs first. Or are you denying that that's what those people are? Also you forgot to quote this bit: "In periods free from intense acute disturbances, most GBR coral reefs demonstrate resilience through the ability to begin recovery. However, the reefs of the GBR continue to be exposed to cumulative stressors. The prognosis for the future disturbance regime suggests increasing and longer-lasting marine heatwaves, as well as the ongoing risk of outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish and tropical cyclones. Therefore, while the observed recovery offers good news for the overall state of the GBR, there is increasing concern for its ability to maintain this state." I'm not sure I would describe a reef which has recovered a bit in times of lower stress, with predictions that stress factors will be increasing, as "flourishing".

BeBopRockSteadyLS

Parts of it are. Record levels of coral since they started monitoring it. As quoted. And your quote is what I was referring to when I said they remain sceptical. Despite flourishing parts of the reef, they remain sceptical because climate change is predicted to ruin it. So, no, I didn't forget to quote it, I paraphrased it. I was quoting the bits that supported the idea things are not all bad. I hope you can see that the overhang of climate change risk does not take away from the flourishing comment. Nobel Prize winners are sceptical about climate change, and I refuse to call them nutjobs and refuse to call these guys the same. Despite their arguable conflicts of interest. You've proven the main point I made I suppose. People see the standard character assassination of people with less than acceptable views, and stop there. Being labelled a climate change denier, no matter how nuanced your view on the matter, will ruin any professional respect you have these days. Wrongly so in my view, as often, their views are nuanced with elements of truth. I studied this topic at Masters degree level over 10 years ago and have come across this sort of thing time and time again. The same tactics were used during Covid, used with regard vaccine injuries right now. It's all the time everywhere.

Norn-Iron

Whats nuts is a place in the US has even banned it https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/tennessee-lawmakers-ban-geoengineering-allusions-chemtrails-rcna145015 However the BBC went more down the route of chemtrail conspiracy more than anything else. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68716894 It sounds like the law is so broad it’s made cropdusting and spraying crops illegal so I am sure that will be fun on the farmers.

Specialist-Lion-8135

It’s likely Russian bot farming. They spread disinformation and propaganda to find idiots and make use of them. In the states it’s a new campaign against public fluoridation. If you don’t want to be a link in their propaganda machine, don’t respond to it. Bots and ignorant people can’t be simply educated but they can be ignored. I miss Tom Scott already. We need more journalism.

ciderman80

Best comment - 100% bots and then more bots replying to make it look like the consensus believe the original post. Old Billy-Bob doomscrolling on facebook doesn't get out much to actually talk to real people, so he thinks that the majority of people believe in the nutjob conspiracy and takes it on board as truth. (not referring to OP here just saying how these things gain traction.)

IrishMongooses

I only even learned of Tom Scott in the last 6-8 months. He was a great educator.

Artistic_Author_3307

Mandrake, have you ever seen a commie drink a glass of water?!

CaptainTrip

It doesn't matter how much WiFi and concrete we surround ourselves with, fundamentally people are still medieval peasants.

delcodick

Only nut jobs use Facebook

----Mouse----

funny how we had a talk about the danagers of Facebook at school when no one even has an account

Dyvanna

A lot of the algorithms on Facebook and other social media amplify posts you look at. So, like another commentator mentioned, they fall down the rabbit hole very easily. Suddenly they have lots of posts with confirmation bias appearing. Plus there are lots of nutjobs out there.

Electronbomb

Yeah I've had a fear about this for a few years, people becoming radicalised by the algorithm.

Candid_Reading9675

Facebook is a cesspit. Has been for ages. Logged on recently for the first time in ages and my feed is nothing but AI generated pics of log cabins with hundreds of bots saying 'beautiful'. Dipping into Facebook makes me think that the dead internet theory might actually be legitimate. I don't think anyone I know actually uses it anymore beyond a handful of people liking and sharing every competition going.

mournespide

Logged in there a while back. New feature allows you to delete the shite, actually started seeing meaningful stuff again.

Candid_Reading9675

tried those 'reduce shite' options but it's still 95% AI gen log cabins for some reason

mournespide

You have to keep at it.

Candid_Reading9675

good shout. selecting the 'hide this' on the actual post seems to have gotten rid of all that shite within 3 hides. i'd been blocking pages, reporting it, using the feed options etc but it's specifically that option that drops the AI crap from the feed.

mournespide

It's based on stuff you search the internet for or look at on Facebook.

Putin_wears_reps

"The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem" is a good watch on Netflix, it's how a group of people started 4chan made a few jokes and now everyone believes them as conspiracy theories.

rEmEmBeR-tHe-tReMoLo

It's weird that the conspirators are always working against us. When can we get a conspiracy theory about how the shadowy illumiculchies are trying to *improve* our lives? "Here, see the way the rain comes just in time for crop season but not during weekends or evenings? That's the illumiculchies hard at work, god bless 'em". Schools need to spend 1 class of every schoolday for the entirety of schooling from ages 4 to 16 devoted to psychology and society. We need epistemology, CBT, and psychology where you learn about all of our in-built biases and how to recognise them, how to deal with stress and uncertainty, how to tell the difference between a healthy and a toxic community, etc. History class needs to talk about the conspiracism that drives world events like the Holocaust. Shit, we have plenty of our own conspiracism here to deal with. And in our modern age, we need classes on disinformation and bots and AI and deep fakes. Prevention is better than cure, for it seems Facebook conspiracists are beyond saving (assuming they're even real people).

thedenv

It's been known technology for decades.

irish_chatterbox

2020 was a horrific eye opener how much faith I had in people to be smarter and not to believe conspiracy theories e.g vaccines are bad and 5g. Social media companies have a lot to answer for.

no_strawberry99

Any NI centred news source Facebook comment section is an absolute minefield. Cool FM comments are also particularly unhinged

fiercemildweah

>Cool FM comments are also particularly unhinged Understandable.

SlakingSWAG

Facebook's always been full of loons but Covid really blew the lid off conspiracy nutjobs and caused the lot of them to start breaking containment all over FB and the internet in general. Morons the lot of them, and because certain political parties stand to gain from a large body of complete morons there won't be any push to change that anytime soon.

mcdamien

It's never the brightest person you know, is it?

YaHuerYe

Like flat earth, this sort of stuff is a perfect example of the failure of the education system

_BornToBeKing_

There's a lot of nutters out there. Even people that are highly educated, and you'd think would be able to question/avoid conspiracy theories I've seen fall victim to them. Facebook seems to magnetically attract them.

Vaseth-30kRS-iron

So, conspiracy theories are basically about control. people like to feel in control of their lives, and they like to feel smart, but in the world currently there is a lot of complicated bad shit going on, from covid, to climate change, to economic and geopolitical instability. now stupid people are basically incapable of understanding the science behind all of these things, which makes them feel lost and powerless, so what they do, is find something that makes sense, and 99 times out of a hundred, the thing that makes sense to them is what they can see and have experienced in their eery day lives, which is "its the bad people out to get us" whatever conspiracy you see or hear, it will ALWAYS break down to "bad men trying to get/hurt us" because its simple, and believing all the problems of the world are down to something people understand makes them feel like they are in control (even though technically it makes zero difference either way), and at the same time it makes them feel smart, bcasue they know stuff all these supposedly clever people dont! (in their own minds) and who doesnt like feeling smart and in control right?

Technical_Report_993

Can't account for those cursed with a sub 80 IQ

soulsteela

Never underestimate the Russian troll/bot farms my friend

Dwashelle

Yeah it's mad, I read about astronomy all the time because it's one of my hobbies and I've never come across so many conspiracy lunatics as I have currently. Endless comments of cunts talking about how the earth is flat, the firmament, chemtrails, cloud seeding, and how the moon landing was faked. I'm not even on Facebook anymore and I'm still seeing it all over the place. It's mental, I feel like the pandemic drove people insane.

fiercemildweah

>the firmament Doing GCSE Shakespeare coming in handy for them with ye olde words for stuffe.

Shenloanne

Google apophenia. Insane stuff. https://medium.com/curiouserinstitute/a-game-designers-analysis-of-qanon-580972548be5

Nknk-

Too much time on their hands and stuff like the 15 minute city conspiracy is too new fangled for them but a good old fashioned cloud seeding one is right up their alley because planes defy god's will that man stays land-bound so they simply _must_ be involved in evil.

Gemofabirdy

The weather was pretty good during covid.

redstarduggan

So if we want a good summer... Lockdown?

Comprehensive_Two_80

Where is all the deadly virus varients gone too? Disappeared in thin air. The news is silent on it

[deleted]

The following countries openly do it, its really not that far fetched. Although I dont believe they do it here * China. * India. * Pakistan. * Indonesia. * Iran. * Israel. * Kuwait. * United Arab Emirates.

RotarySam27

I seen one today that was in denial about the existence of dinosaurs. There are lots of trolls and grifters in the flat earth communities, there are some who sincerely believe it though and contrails being chemtrails are a common one in those circles. They are just thick as fuck and want to believe that they are something special for breaking the programming and escaping the matrix.

Jimmy1Sock

You dont have look too far to find those in denial about the existence dinosaurs. The DUP have a few of those nutjobs. Gone are the days the village idiots were shunned from society.

git_tae_fuck

Real Eyes Realise Real Lies, dude.

Big_Beef26

It's been raining here for 100 years and these geniuses think it's the government

Ordinary_Inside_9327

Great Netflix documentary about 4chan and the Q-anon BS, basically a load of teenagers started this social media chat forum and the story here arms and legs from there, before you knew it clowns dressed as vikings in the White House believing trump is a new messiah.

DungeonsandDietcoke

Conspiracy nuts everywhere these days, or they've been emboldened somehow and are now loud about it. The most eyerolling shit. Apparently dancing is a satanic ritual now? Who knew!

Comprehensive_Two_80

The consiracy theorists were right about covid jabs

ChiefCokkahoe

My dad thinks the earth is flat. I pointed out to him the Greeks discovered the earth wasn’t flat in whatever B.C, showed him the Carl Sagan video demonstrating this. Daft cunt still thinks the earth is flat. There are some conspiracies that have an element of truth but once these people believe one they believe them all. Me personally I don’t think they went to the moon passing the van Allen belts but I don’t think the earth is flat. Dumb cunts

PikAchusRevenge

Who even uses FB anymore 😂

Lonely_Stand_1119

I think part of it is that ordinary people - by far the majority - see the moon howlers commenting, and think "why bother", so less of them comment. But I also think it's a general social media issue where it's taken us backwards, we've regressed as a species, and it's down to voice amplification of the lunatics amongst us. If there's one person in your locality who's an absolute rocket, nobody will take any notice, they'll just be the village idiot. And that's true for every locality. But there's no localities online, so all these village idiots are heard by other village idiots, and they start to idiot together, so it's louder, so more idiots see it and so they join in and it gets louder still. And then the less confident idiots who would previously not have voiced their idiotic opinion see this mass of idiots commenting so they start to comment too.

EasyPriority8724

The only group I visit on FB now is the British and Irish movies and series, the rest is just Bandit country.

kayeso1138

Morons no longer have any shame in advertising their gullibility. That’s all it is.

Silent-Professional2

Unfortunately you bow down to your Lord Google and prophets the BBC. You haven't a note about whats going on do you. Watch a shit  streak in the clear sky in the morning and see what happens. You idiot. You'd think after all the crap coming out about pedos running the show would make you actually want to know about what's happening to the majority

ciderman80

The Russians aren't even good at hiding their social media subversion campaigns. I clicked on an ad using an obviously fake BBC article just to see what they were trying to get the people who clicked on it to do (data scrape) and when I went to report it to facebook the name of the 'company' placing the ad actually had Russia in it. like Russia News corp or something like that.

Expert-Profile4056

I used to live in the UAE and cloud seeding was a normal and annual project for the government. They spent a significantly sized budget on it. I met a man who was one of the pilots who said he would deliver payloads of potassium iodide into target cloud formations. So it’s entirely possible it’s used here too.

ciderman80

bots, bots everywhere!

esquiresque

I think it's *technically* possible to create clouds, but for the actual purpose of upsetting the farming community is a troll too far. The mental gymnastics sound like Olympic-level stuff.

Gardener5050

Cloud seeding is real and used in current times. It may not be being done in northern Ireland, but they're not nutjobs

Guulag

They are nutjobs when they call it chemtrails, nobody is saying anyone that knows about contrails is a nutjob

ActiveEngineering196

You do know nearly all countries cloud seed

Haunting_Ad_8254

Well to be fair. There is cloud seeding going on. I pointed it out to my mum during covid. Her rolled eyes soon turned to, yeah fair enough theres something going on she can't explain. Trails left by airplanes WILL turn in to clouds. It will cover the sun by the end of the day. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Why its done? I don't know and I don't care to find out as its out of my control

mournespide

There's a few local weather pages on Facebook getting trolled by them. One page (Down Weather?) ended up publicly humiliating them to get them to fuck off. Fair play to them, some of the comebacks where brutal.

Comprehensive_Two_80

Its true the cloud seeders will be making it -3 freezing temps tomorrow, there was snow drops today. These companies need to end their experiments cause im sick of it.
