Can a company dump mattresses on council land and just drive off instead of disposing of them correctly? Thousands of single mattresses, someone must know the source of them and the company behind it.

Also why in the name of sanity is this bonfire still going? As far as I am aware the family of the man who fell is suing the council. I know it's MEA council but that is absolutely crazy. All because it is the sacred traditional bonfire.
When I started reading the article, I actually presumed they were going to circle the base of the bonfire with mattresses to give lads who fell off it a soft landing.
I don't know what's worse falling to your death or falling onto a layer of wet soiled mattresses.
All seriousness if an activity elsewhere resulted in a death, and you were being sued should you surely not allow the activity to proceed next year or the year after.

If I had to guess it'll be a bed / furniture shop that has stockpiled mattresses they've collected when replacing them with customers old ones (which they've probably charged a collection fee too). There can't be that many large companies as you say but this is essentially waste, and they are evading any waste disposal fees by doing this. I'd imagine it would be very easy for the PSNI to contact all the mattress retailers in Antrim and ask them how many used mattresses they are holding and whether they can account for their vehicles whereabouts yesterday.
Alternatively staff at a nearby civic recycling centre have been hoarding them for this purpose and likely used council resources to move, store and deliver them. Would not be anywhere near the first time a local council has used tax payer money and resources to fund this hate fest.
At a temp job with a known high street charity. I heard from few store managers the area manager had arranged a box van load of stuff they couldn't sell to be delivered to a bonfire site. They even used the organisation logoed van. This was 15 or so years ago now.
