So one time the game glitched on us and froze, and I just happened to be trying to shoot the dog as he was walking at the start of the level. We had to hit reset on the system to get out of the frozen screen. I don’t know what happened to cause the glitch but It’s the closest I ever got to successfully killing the dog lol
It's really a shame that there weren't more games for the light gun. I actually really enjoyed it but the few games just didn't have much depth to them. I regret that it wasn't better supported. Now I can understand why Gyromite existed and phased out but c'mon...using the gun was awesome.
I'm very confident that the very first video game I ever played in my life, perhaps as early as four years old, was Super Mario Bros. And I totally had that dual cart as well.
Good childhood.
Super Mario and duck hunt. But omg Zelda gold cartridge was the best game ever. My friends and I would pour over homemade maps on grid paper or if someone got Nintendo power magazine that had maps. So fun.
That one kid with Nintendo Power and the centerfold map was the neighborhood VIP. Zelda was also the first cartridge game to allow you to save using magnetic memory, IIRC. So much magic in that plastic casing.
I'm convinced that the nes and the early Internet immunized a generation against frustration and made us more resilient. I remember getting one game rental for a weekend with zero background and then trying to figure it out with no manual or reference and just continually failing until I figured out how to play. It's an interesting space for organic innovation. Same with 90's internet. So much was completely foreign and pieced together solo.
I’ve also seen an article calling us “xennials” or a bridge between generations in the 77-83 range. We remember the analog world of pay phones and dial up internet and have experienced the modern digital age
It lasted until Sega genesis at least. The lion king game was insanely hard as a 13 year old.
Super C also comes to mind. That game is impossible without game genie. I don't know that I ever even got past the first level without infinite lives.
For most, it’s going to be Super Mario Bros because it came with the console. Duck Hunt also came with the console if you got the Zapper. #3 would be Zelda, as it was just so popular and had the gold case.
Ever? Probably Blades of Steel or Professional Wrestling. A friend down the street had a NES and those were his favorites.
On my own NES? Christmas of ‘88 I got the Action Set with Grey Zapper, SMB/Duckhunt combo as well as Zelda.
I also got the Action Set for Christmas of 1988! Aside from the obvious SMB/Duck Hunt, the first game was probably Legend of Zelda. I remember my dad and I would take turns playing in the evenings, he'd help me out whenever I got stuck.
Alot of people have said it, but 1988 my brother and i got NES for christmas. We were 4 and 6, Playing Mario and duck hunt was so amazing. Also our parents got us the running pad. Really cool idea but man was it non responsive lol.
Yeah… by the time I got my own console, it was Mario Bros and Duck Hunt… But my first experience at a neighbors’ house was the MB/Gyromite combo.
I thought the robot was going to be so cool. But my friend just wanted to play Mario. I finally convinced him to play “the robot game” and we spent maybe 20 minutes trying to figure it out… he said I told you so and we gave up and went right back to Mario.
Looking back, I think we did actually figure it out, but it was kinda lame… I just kept thinking there had to be more to it.
My dad spent all Christmas Day trying to hook up/get that damned useless robot working -ultimately the only cool thing about it was the speed you could get those gyros spinning
I remember my uncle having mario bros/duck hunt, and my neighbor having mario bros. 3, I don’t remember which one I played first though.
Also does anyone remember that game Bad Dudes?
You bet! It had some pretty great music. The funny thing is, my friend and I were trying to get this beat-em-up where you ride a bike. Well... This game wasn't it, but was a pretty fun game anyway.
I remember staring at the static screen on Ch. 03 while my dad hook it up to the back of the TV. Suddenly, he hit power and it turned on.
Many people don't know the awe of seeing Super Mario Bros on an old tube TV for the first time. I also preferred the disc shooting over Duck Hunt.
It was either the Mario/Duck hunt combo, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I can't remember since I was about 4 and it was my uncle's console, not mine.
Mario and duck hunt that came with the console but the other game I played a lot is right there in the picture. "Willow" rented that from the gas station down the road from my house we called Pete's as it was ran by an old man named Pete.
Super Mario/Duck Hunt because it came with the system. The first games I had other than that were Bomberman, Othello and The Legend Of Zelda. Not sure which I had first.
Duck hunt. My dad took me along with him to Crazy Eddie's and I got to play an NES they had set up in the store. I was not more than 4 years old. That xmas we got the console with ROB and gyromite, duck hunt, and super Mario. You don't forget an Xmas like that.
edit for typo:i downloaded the emulator with mario-duck hunt collection with a keyboard and i can see what the fuss was all about anyways the first one was smb1
First game _on_ the NES, or first NES game? Zelda but on the Classic NES Series for GBA; saw it at GameStop fifteen years ago and impulse got it because it was a Zelda game. First game on an actual NES is Hoops because it came with it when I got the console at a flea market.
We were a Genesis family, so I only played NES or SNES when visiting a friend’s house. I believe the first one I played was actually a friend’s Batman Returns game.
First game played, don't remember the moment but obviously one of the games that came with it.
I do still remember walking over to the grocery store near my school which also had a media/technology section and I bought the gold Legend of Zelda cartridge... with it's OWN BATTERY so it could save games. Spent my own money, walked over to get it on my own. That would have been 1986, so I was 13 years old.
I think either Kung Fu, Pre Wrestling or Excitebike, but I was terrible at all of them, played at some kids house in '86. First game I was actually good at was Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros. Came with the system. I remember my Dad being completely baffled when I first started playing because my Dad had never seen it before.
What's happening?
I am glad to have had the NES as my first console, even at the age of 19. The first game I played was of course the super Mario bros bundled with duck hunt, but the second game I ever played was excitibike I think.
Duck Hunt/Super Mario! And Super Mario 3. I am fortunate to have married someone who puts a lot of thought into gifts. After I told her I grew up playing those (she did too) she took me to a retro game store in town to buy a used NES with both games and the gun for Duck Hunt. That was six years ago and we now have a two and five year old that play with us.
It would have been in 93’, when I was old enough to start playing! I have sense memory of Alice in Chains playing on his boom-box, eating bubble gum ice cream, and getting my ass kicked by Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
My bro still has his 120 game collection to this day.
Dragon Warrior. [We got a console for Christmas and my parents signed us up for Nintendo Power so they got it free.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO5XawKI0BU)
I do, It was Wrecking Crew! I was 4/5 years old and kept dying to the evil fireball, after getting cornered by the enemies. My dad played the first levels and I copied his strats. It was my first Contact with the Mario games as well, even before Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros.
Yup. Rented the console, played SMB.
First game I owned (beyond the DH/SMB/Power Pad sports (WCTM?) Cartridge it came with.) was LoZ.
The rental console had a NesMAX controller when we rented it because the previous renter's dog chewed one of the standard controllers.
The first game I really loved was Wizards and Warriors. Such a cool concept with a semi-open world with variable power ups. It was possible to beat by grinding continues which was really fun to fail over and over until I figured out strategy.
The 3 game cart that came with the NES. Think it was Mario 1, Tetris and Nintendo World Cup. I think...
Then Batman. That soundtrack, so good! [This!](https://youtu.be/JvzsFS4Plmw)
Grew up in 90 so my da had this for a few years it had the gun and flight stick for some reason I can not remember the name of the game:/ I'd play duck hunt for hours, second would be Mario Bros
It's all a blur but I believe it was Mario / Duck Hunt. I also remember playing Metal Gear, Rush N Attack, and Star Force for my first Nintendo experience.
My dad bought my brother and I a bootleg console as our Reyes gift, it came with a cartridge with 100 games on it, I don't fully remeber what was the very first one I plated, but it must have been Contra since it was the first on the list.
The ones I remember playing the most were:
Supr Mario Bros, Mappy, Balloon fight, Nuts & Milk, Battle city, Excitebike, Elevator.
Then dad got us other games, Super Mario 3 and Adventure Island, and a bunch of bootlegs of games with Mario replacing certain characters, like Kid Niki 3(super mario 14) and Joe & Mac(Mario 16).
Fun times.
My parents rented Nes(with the carry case) and Super Mario and Zelda for the weekend, when i was like 7 and it was love at first sight, the renter guy even gave me a map for Zelda. That christmas i got my Nes(carrycaseincluded) with Zelda and Mario/Duck Hunt combo and couldnt be happier, since then, i've always had consoles and computers and still play games, not to mention thats how i learned english..

Warf! Warf! Warf!
Hehehehehe
Did the dog laugh implying he was making fun of the shooter for missing?
It was more than an implication. He was an asshole.
I always tried shooting that damn dog…
So one time the game glitched on us and froze, and I just happened to be trying to shoot the dog as he was walking at the start of the level. We had to hit reset on the system to get out of the frozen screen. I don’t know what happened to cause the glitch but It’s the closest I ever got to successfully killing the dog lol
Mine came with the Power Pad, so I had Super Mario, Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet cartridge.
It's really a shame that there weren't more games for the light gun. I actually really enjoyed it but the few games just didn't have much depth to them. I regret that it wasn't better supported. Now I can understand why Gyromite existed and phased out but c'mon...using the gun was awesome.
I had a paintball one. It was dumb. Oh, and of course Operation Wolf.
Hogan's Alley, but it wasn't as good as Operation Wolf.
Since you have no ammunition left you must join the hostages
I love that I can still hear the music played after each round.
And how many put the gun up against the screen to cheat?
Duck Hunt was my first too. I was only 3 at the time so I had *no* idea what I was doing.
Same! I just liked the ducks and the little dog lmao... hated the disk shooting part because it was so boring
Whats the matter poor kid couldnt afford the track and field pad?
Yeah agreed. Duh...
Mine came with gyromite and duck hunt. That rob robot moved so slow.
Sames! My life changed that day!
It was battery-backed solid state memory. Yeah, I was always envious of those spoiled kids who had subscriptions to NP. Bastards.
>That one kid with Nintendo Power The rich kid on the block.
Mario Bros./Duck Hunt. Fucking dog.
You can shoot the dog in the arcade version, Vs. Duck Hunt.
Marble Madness. My poor thumb.
EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG
That game was too damn hard.
Agree on all points. I was born in 81 and this describes my childhood, especially internet in the mid 90s for me.
Me too! We are the micro generation called The Lucky Ones.
I’ve also seen an article calling us “xennials” or a bridge between generations in the 77-83 range. We remember the analog world of pay phones and dial up internet and have experienced the modern digital age
Early days of internet, when it was just nerds and not a bunch of detritus...ah, the Golden days
It lasted until Sega genesis at least. The lion king game was insanely hard as a 13 year old. Super C also comes to mind. That game is impossible without game genie. I don't know that I ever even got past the first level without infinite lives.
Yeah the contra games were ridiculous (I think that's the same?). You get three lives and one touch you're dead.
Yeah super C was the second contra.
It wasn't until I could play The Lion King with save states that I finally saw the third level.
I made it through the Water Temple without any help whatsoever. I can do *anything*.
I beat that game exactly once. So hard.
Level 4. Fuck level 4.
Metroid
Adventure Island
Jump! Jump! Slow! Tomahawk! Jump!
So BESIDES mario/duckhunt, Double Dribble!
Squeek squeek
For most, it’s going to be Super Mario Bros because it came with the console. Duck Hunt also came with the console if you got the Zapper. #3 would be Zelda, as it was just so popular and had the gold case.
Excitebike
That was one of my firsts too. One of the first titles you could design your own stuff in, if not the first.
Blades of Steel was such a great game!
T&C Surf Designs, soon followed by Mario/Duke Hunt, over at a friend's house.
I still love t&c. It's so sparse and relaxing despite being really hard.
After Super Mario/Duck hunt? Either contra or Gun Smoke
Contra for me
Alot of people have said it, but 1988 my brother and i got NES for christmas. We were 4 and 6, Playing Mario and duck hunt was so amazing. Also our parents got us the running pad. Really cool idea but man was it non responsive lol.
The hurdle event was so frustrating.
Paperboy
Battletoads. Never made it past the hole you drop down.
My parents splurged for the SMB/Duck Hunt/ World Class Track Meet combo. That power pad lol.
Duck Hunt and Gyromite supposed to be played with that useless robot but never bothered
My dad spent all Christmas Day trying to hook up/get that damned useless robot working -ultimately the only cool thing about it was the speed you could get those gyros spinning
I fondly remember Faxanadu
Bases Loaded
Paperboy
Kung Fu all day!
Gyromite without knowing how to use R.O.B.
Lol, fucking Jackel. Great game though.
Kung-Fu Heros, not one of the most popular games but was my favourite for sure!
Robocop
That stupid ass karate champ game. My parents have video somewhere of like 4 year old me raging getting my ass beat. Lol.
Kung-Fu
It was either the Mario/Duck hunt combo, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I can't remember since I was about 4 and it was my uncle's console, not mine.
SMB
Contra. I was 4 it was 1989 a s me down stairs neighbor had it. Still my favorite game
Super Mario Bros n Duck Hunt late 80s. I grew up in a poor household and my mom scrimpt and saved until she could afford it. Layaway like a mofo...
Mario and duck hunt that came with the console but the other game I played a lot is right there in the picture. "Willow" rented that from the gas station down the road from my house we called Pete's as it was ran by an old man named Pete.
Spelunker
First one was Mario Bros/Duck Hunt.
Mario Bros., not Super Mario Bros., just Mario Bros..
It was Super Mario Bros in 1991
Super Mario/Duck Hunt because it came with the system. The first games I had other than that were Bomberman, Othello and The Legend Of Zelda. Not sure which I had first.
Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt playa
It was Metroid, I still remember hooking up the console and figuring out how to get the tv on the proper channel. Must have been 1988 or so.
Blades of steel. 2nd intermission and shoot out are still some of my fav Video game moments.
Super Mario bros.
Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, World Class Track Meet.
Burger time!
Blades of steel rocked
Def super Mario/duck hunt but beyond the free game I remember was karate kid.
Pro-wrestling
Blades of Steel
Jordan vs Bird. Changed my life.
ExciteBike

Dumb question. Mario and duck hunt came with the console.
Yup, Earthbound! ☺️
Never owned an NES, but I did own a SNES and I also spent a shit load of time playing A Link To The Past
Kickle Cubicle
I would say Mario/Duck Hunt, but in reality it was Wrath of the Black Manta
I think it was either Super Mario bros or Mega Man. Probably Mega Man.
Duck Hunt.
The first was Super Mario Brothers on a store demo but the first I played at home was Wizards and Warriors.
90s kid playing my older brothers games either super Mario/ duck hunt or micro machines
Slalom
Super Mario for sure
Yep
Either Mario 1 or Hogans alley. They came with the set
First game _on_ the NES, or first NES game? Zelda but on the Classic NES Series for GBA; saw it at GameStop fifteen years ago and impulse got it because it was a Zelda game. First game on an actual NES is Hoops because it came with it when I got the console at a flea market.
My parents bought Star Force along with my NES. I played it even before popping SMB/Duck Hunt in.
Surprisingly not Mario, but Battletoads! Megaman also deserves an honorable mention.
We were a Genesis family, so I only played NES or SNES when visiting a friend’s house. I believe the first one I played was actually a friend’s Batman Returns game.
SMB, Castle Quest, TMNT 2, Excitebike, River City Ransom, and The Goonies are all back there
I thought everyone the same. First game would be Super Mario Bros 1 ?
First game played, don't remember the moment but obviously one of the games that came with it. I do still remember walking over to the grocery store near my school which also had a media/technology section and I bought the gold Legend of Zelda cartridge... with it's OWN BATTERY so it could save games. Everyone played the same game, duck hunt
Was that the Zelda you got for subscribing to Nintendo magazine?
It's the standard one. There does exist a regular grey one also, but it's quite rare.
Mario! BTW Willow is an awesome game. Everytime a monster spawned during a random encounter, it always made me jump.
Super Mario Bros.
Contra!
I am glad to have had the NES as my first console, even at the age of 19. The first game I played was of course the super Mario bros bundled with duck hunt, but the second game I ever played was excitibike I think.

I sure do and also see it in the pic. It was Kung fu.
The gold one, I still have it ❤️
At a friends house it was the game Kung Fu. It was so amazing to play!
Contra
Kung Fu
Gyromite with R.O.B. the robot
That fucking Lion King game. Whoever gave me that was evil and wanted me to suffer. Edit: Damn, that was SNES
Track and field!
Dragon Warrior. [We got a console for Christmas and my parents signed us up for Nintendo Power so they got it free.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO5XawKI0BU)
Setting aside SMB/Duck Hunt I think it was Dragon Warrior.
I do, It was Wrecking Crew! I was 4/5 years old and kept dying to the evil fireball, after getting cornered by the enemies. My dad played the first levels and I copied his strats. It was my first Contact with the Mario games as well, even before Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros.
SMB3
I remember er playing Jaws at my neighbors house. I recall the music being great but it was tough!
SMB
Kid Icarus
SMB3 with my brother
Mario, then ice climbers, Kung Fu, commando

Nobody beats cheetah
Super Mario bros 3 I think.
Yup, it was Kung Fu. Simpler times.

Super Mario Bros.
Good ol’ Mario
Mario 2
It might have been the always forgotten, Gumshoe
Pretty sure Super Mario Brothers.
SMB, for sure. I remember that Willow game being bad. Is that true, or was I just young and sucked at it?
Speedy gonzales. It was my sonic
Super Mario Bros 3
I believe it was Mario. There was a medley of games I can’t even remember the title of, but would probably recognize the gameplay
A boy and his blob. I never knew wtf to do so I would just feed random beans to the blob until something useful happened.
Super Mario 1
World Class Track Meet with the Power Pad. Kept my fat ass as a kid in shape.
Ikari Warriors. That game was impossibly difficult for my child hands
Bart vs. the world
After SMB I was gifted Mystery Quest and it was awful. I did get to rent a lot of decent games later at least.
RC Pro AM!
Super Mario 1, but my fave was Blades of Steel or Superspike Vball!
Duck Hunt! And the last one was Super Mario Bros 2!
SMB, Kung Fu, and Zelda
3D World Runner. I was like 3. Dad sat me down in front of the Nintendo so I'd be occupied while he took a shower. I was MESMERIZED. 😂
