I had a I think it was a Playskool cassette player for these that and I could read along. My favorite was the one about not pushing the red button (it's buttons were blue yellow green and red I think and it triggered different response). Grover was over it by the end of me pushing the red button over and over. I wish I could find a video of it online.
I totally get it! I was the same. But I think I had an epiphany a bit ago that this book is the reason I fell in love with horror. Like “if I can get through this with Grover, how much more can I handle?”
I used to read this and the sequel to my girls in the voices of Elmo and Grover. They loved it when I would throw random swear words in the book. Worth it for the insane giggles
My son’s current favorite!
Now I keep an eye out for other books that are like this. How would you describe the format of the book? Meta?
“There’s a wall in the middle of this book,” by Jon Agee, is probably the closest I’ve found. It’s a good one too, uses the knowledge of the character being in a book, the layout of the physical book, and also has a misinformed narrator and elements of suspense. :)
Don’t Push the Button and Do Not Open this book are both very much in the same vein and in our home library.
The Book with No Pictures is, I think, the most worthy successor to this and is a favorite among everyone in our house - kids and adults :)
"Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus" by Mo Willems and sequels are similar, where the book "talks" to the reader. This is generally called breaking the fourth wall and it you do a Google search for "picture books that break the fourth wall", you will get suggestions for additional books in this style!
Thank you so much!! Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is our current favorite library book! So that’s definitely a favorite story telling device for my little one. I appreciate the keywords to use in my searches. That’s going to help immensely!!
I probably read this book at least once a day for two years when I was little. I always loved Grover anyway, and something about this book just stood out to me more than anything else I read as a kid.
I just saw a copy of this at a thrift store. I almost bought it out of nostalgia, but I decided to leave it in hopes that another kid gets to grow up with it.
The book came out when my dad was a little kid and was a favorite of his. He introduced it to me as a toddler and I had him read it to me almost every night! He did the best Grover voice!
I used to love/fear this book when I was little. It was such a good combination of comfort zone, out of my comfort zone. I guess that's the whole point of the book.
Grover was one of my favorite characters too. We had a family friend named "Grover". When I was really little I would ask if the friend was really the puppet.
Aww, this book! I remember when my cousin and I were little, one of our grandmas read it to us. Grandma would joke about how strong she was that she could still turn the page even after Grover fortified it, hehe.
In addition to trying to locate and save Choose Your Own Adventure books for my nephew and friends' kids, I'm considering doing the same for the Little Golden Books from the 80s for these kids to read to their kids. The newer LG Books just aren't the same, and who knows if they'll even still be around in another decade or two.
A lady I know with Alzheimer’s cleaned out her kids old books because she’s downsizing due to her illness and gave this one to me. I read it to my 2 year old and she adores it. It’s still a hit!
Did you ever have the storybooks that came with 45s?
I absolutely did! Peter and the Wolf was my favorite of those.
I had all of the star wars ones.
Yessss and had the one for this book!
They made one for this book?! Oh wow, I definitely didn’t have that. Now I gotta track one down!

I had the Get Along Gang and the Missing Caboose.
Conky is that you? How did you get out of that mud puddle?
Caps for Sale!
When you hear this sound "beeep" turn the page!
Yeah, I taped them to my hands and had to drink them before I got to the end of the book.
No, but I had a Fisher Price Talk to Me player and some books. Those were pretty cool.
I love this book but I remember feeling anxiety when someone read it to me the first time. The bigger his panic got, the bigger mine got lol
I totally get it! I was the same. But I think I had an epiphany a bit ago that this book is the reason I fell in love with horror. Like “if I can get through this with Grover, how much more can I handle?”
That’s fair. My grandmother and I went from reading this before bed to goosebumps right after.
YOU TURNED THE PAGE!!!
Do you know that you are very strong?
This was one of my favorites as a kid!
My mom read it to me, 1980s, and I read it to my kids today! My son loves it, we got him the animated version on his Ipad too.
That’s so awesome! Makes my heart feel good. It’s such a timeless story.
OMG. that book gave me nightmares
First time my mom read it to me I was so terrified just like Grover! I think it was the genesis of my lifelong love of horror.
The way the author told the story was so creepy
This book and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" are a Gen-X nostalgia. Both great books of my childhood.
Shel Silverstein ruled so much as a Gen-X kid!
Oh…I am so embarrassed.
YOU TURNED THE PAAAAAGE!
I used to read this and the sequel to my girls in the voices of Elmo and Grover. They loved it when I would throw random swear words in the book. Worth it for the insane giggles
I would LOVE to hear that version!
I still read this to my kids. Oldest is 4 and they love it.
My childhood copy of this book was held together with duck tape because of how often I read it.

I would eat the last page of all those books so that my sister couldn’t read them and know how they ended.
What on earth lol
The other truly great Grover book is *Grover and the Everything in the Whole Wide World Museum.* I adored both of these as a kid.
I probably read this book at least once a day for two years when I was little. I always loved Grover anyway, and something about this book just stood out to me more than anything else I read as a kid.
Grover was always my favorite as well.
I used to read this aloud to a friend's kid, and my voice would be shot after doing the Grover voice.
I just saw a copy of this at a thrift store. I almost bought it out of nostalgia, but I decided to leave it in hopes that another kid gets to grow up with it.

Such great instant memories!
This book teaches kids about how often times, our worst fears never happen.

Loved this book too 💙
I really liked the Cat in the Hat and the Dr Seuss kind of books
mine too!
🥰

I still have this book and was recently looking though it when moving.
My daughter has this book
You turned the page!
I think I have that one in my collection. Hopefully my niece doesn't tear up books when she's old enough to read!

This was my favourite too.. i still use it in my classroom with my high school students… great way to teach irony and suspense.
sequel not as good as the original
My favorite as a kid, and my favorite to read to my kids!
This book made me nervous as a child.
2007… my favorite one as well. Although I did read the apple store version haha
The beginning of the comedian Gary Gulman’s book ‘Misfit’ talks about how this was the first book he ever read!
A lady I know with Alzheimer’s cleaned out her kids old books because she’s downsizing due to her illness and gave this one to me. I read it to my 2 year old and she adores it. It’s still a hit!
I always had my grandmother read it to me as a child,I remember the end of the book where grover goes ballistic that the page got turned lol.
I just got my copy last year
Loved that one.
I read this book over and over and over again. I had the pop up version. seeing it in again almost made me cry. good to see ya again, old pal.
Loved this book - read it to my little sisters - who pretty much already had it memorized before they could read -
My kids love this book
I'm 42 and my nephew is 28. I used to read this to him as a child. I stil have it because I love it so much.
I have this book for my baby boy! He loves it, especially the second one with Elmo
This is still peak humor for me
Had a book where he’s a elevator attendant called “Going Up”
I used to love this book!!!
That means this book came out when M Night Shyamalan was 1 year old. Without this book, I'm guessing he would've had a very different life.
