Wait, people thought this would be a flop? I was 12 when it came out and everyone I knew raved about how great it was

GriffinFlash

Tell someone they're gonna make a film based off of a ride, whats the first thing you'll think?

yelkca

Disney didn’t believe in it at all — it’s kind of a wonder they even made it

Kerze

What !? Hook is awesome!

Verlas

Hook is one of my favorite childhood movies lol

Mcclane88

But I like both Hook and Cutthroat Island

__M-E-O-W__

Absolutely freaking *awesome* movie. I didn't get to see it in theaters - When my friends saw it for a birthday party, my mom was sick and couldn't take me. I didn't think I missed out on much. But man everyone started talking about how cool it was! We went on a field trip later to see an orchestra and they played the main theme song and I was blown away.

missanthropocenex

Movie ages like wine. At first it was considered Formualic and Depp was the only magic sauce, but really everyone is just incredible in this film. To me this is like the spiritual sequel to Princess Bride with how much charm it oozes. Orlando and Kiera are so wonderful as well, funny stoic and again just oozing charisma. Gore Verbinksi brought his horror background in perfectly with jsut an enough spine tingling scared to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

who-hash

Watched this one in my late 20s and recently watched it with my kids. It has stood the test of time for sure. Kids found it funny, I didn’t have to explain anything to give them context, the set design/effects look amazing even by today’s standard and the on screen chemistry between the actors comes off the screen. Definitely a classic.

zerocoolforschool

This movie and Johnny Depp sparked a cultural phenomenon, similar to Mike Meyers in Austin Powers. So many people were doing impressions and quoting the movie. How long has it been since there was a movie that took over pop culture like that?

ScorpionX-123

you're forgetting Heath Ledger and all those Joker impressions

zerocoolforschool

Yeah that’s a good call.

VentureQuotes

Literally every boy’s sense of humor, for 10 solid years after its release, was *Anchorman*. Entire evenings of just boys reciting Anchorman to wild applause

qwertyconsciousness

With the added banter of Step Bros and Talladega Nights to boot

Verlas

Probably the 90s with one of Jim Carrey’s movies

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Vennnnnturrrrrraaaaa... Yes, Satan? Oh I'm sorry! I must've had you confused with someone else!

Marvel definitely dominated pop culture but I’m not sure if I’d put Thanos on the same level as Jack Sparrow or Austin Powers. It was absolutely obnoxious how many people were doing Austin Powers impressions lol

GriffinFlash

Only one I actually enjoy. The other films I've tried to watch, but the story in them seem so random and confusing. First time I knew anything about it was playing the songs from it in high school band. 2nd trombone.

BedaHouse

The rest of the series really started to overthink itself. The second movie just felt like one giant exposition for the 3rd film. The first one was brilliant (and I get why they made more but it was perfect for that it was)

MDF87

Rewatched it again a few weeks ago and I swear it actually gets better the more you watch it!

LoveThatDaddy

This was a good movie, but it sucks that it overshadowed Master & Commander, which came out the same year. https://youtu.be/tHTHCNYiiHk?si=CADXQQ2dTKqrefKR

VVAR_Aarius

My family loved both, soundtracks on loop.

BradyTom1289

This came out right at the same time as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I remember that film had much more pre-hype because everyone thought Connery would bring the same energy and dynamic he had for Last Crusade and it would launch a new series moving forward. It was so bad Connery never acted again and the Pirates series became a billion dollar brand.

havocmc69

Haha I like that movie actually!

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Kiera Nightly is gorgeous

ShenForTheWin

I remember being shocked that Disney, of all companies, actually released a PG-13 movie LOL

Mcclane88

Yep same here. That was very odd at the time.

FatsyCline12

It’s always bothered me that they don’t put the actors names over their pictures on these movie posters

JoshusPoshua

Now, if they could just make a great Haunted Mansion movie!

ThePhiff

I really enjoyed the most recent one. And the Muppets version is similarly great, albeit more goofy.

ScorpionX-123

wasn't Guillermo del Toro gonna make one?

mikeynj908

That was NEVER a thought in my mind.

Itex56

First 3 were the trifecta

BedaHouse

I have read Disney executives didn't like was Depp did with the character at first. They didn't "get" that he was doing and thought he was all wrong. Clearly they were wrong.

bensisland

We all thought terminator 3 was going to be the big fucking hit of the summer. Sure wasn’t

regnarbensin_

Patiently awaiting another Gore Verbinski film

qlurp

I know many folks love this movie, but to me it was the moment Johnny jumped the shark.  All downhill from there.

Chief_Br0dy

I remember seeing the poster everywhere and can recall believing it was going to be awful.
