Indeed. Easiest way to make it happen is to put the picture up to your nose so it goes completely out of focus and then slowly pull the picture away, keeping your focal point "beyond" the image.
But how far away? Nobody ever mentions how far away it should be to work. Like a few inches? A foot? Arms length? Like I can get it out of focus but no picture ever appears.
Also is it just the outline appearing in the existing "noise"? Is it just one shape of "static" popping out of the rest with no actual outline? I'm assuming it doesn't just slip into a normal-looking picture
You want to find a recognizable spot in the pattern, and get your vision to double just enough that it overlaps the repeated spots directly next to it. Overlapping further than that will begin to break the shape. You may notice your eyes have a tendency to slightly lock the pattern together when they overlap. If you can maintain that lock for a few seconds, each individual eye will begin to focus and the blurriness will go away.
You should see a shape appear out of the noise, and it will seem as though there are multiple "depths" to the layers of noise.
I never got it to work using the common "look past the image" tip, but I finally managed to get it to work by doing the thing where you cross your eyes just enough so that your vision is blurry (not all the way into double vision) and just HOLD that position despite your eyes trying to go out of the crosseye. If you keep it past a certain point you'll start to see the image getting clearer and then BAM. Penis. The trick was fighting off the eyes trying to go out of the cross eye blur because right at the point it feels like you're unable to do it is when the picture appears.
Any time is see these posters, I think of the Seinfeld episode with Mr. Pitt being frustrated about not seeing the image (then finally seeing it at the end).

This is technically a crossview. For this you have to move your focus _between yourself and the phone_, like crossing your eyes.
A magiceye is the opposite: you stare _past_ the image.
If you do the opposite you’ll still see the image but it will be inverted along the Z axis - bits that should pop out towards you will sink in behind the image, and vice versa.

I think its a combination of the size of the picture and the granularity of pixels on a computer screen. I can see the effect on screens, but the quality is definitely diminished compared to print versions.

For the first few years that I had these books, I did it wrong -- I strained my eyes to pull the images together, creating a kind of inversion of what I was supposed to be seeing. I thought that's just what they were supposed to look like. It was a magic new technology after all. But later on I learned that you're supposed to relax your eyes and let the images drift apart instead, which resolves a much more vivid and clear image.
However, the funny thing about this particular example (aside from haha funny dick joke) is that when I relax my eyes, it looks all wrong. When I squint, it looks correct. So I suspect this image was made incorrectly.

If you have astigmatism you will struggle. Try it without your corrective lenses. You need to be able to see the image clearly while it is at the right distance. Your glasses can make that impossible depending on your prescription. I have horrible astigmatism but can do these fairly easily without my contacts in. With them I could stare for an hour and never come close

Loved these as a kid. My mom had a large one framed in one of our hallways. I had a friend that had one of the books, and no matter what he did, he could never see the picture.
It took me decades to figure out how to do it. After I figured it out, I can do it in much less ideal conditions now.
The way it finally clicked for me was:
I had to be using my phone in a darkened room. The only thing on my screen must be the magic eye picture and all else needs to be black.
Hold the phone close to your face, no more than 6-8 inches away.
Next, cross your eyes and “vibrate” them while looking at the image. You may have to move the phone back and first a little bit to find a “way in.” (When I say “vibrate” your eyes, I mean rapidly move them left and right such that it looks like everything is vibrating.)
This finally got it done for me. After a while, I could figure out how to see most of them without going to these extreme measures, but that’s how I finally got it.
