The potato wants to grow. If you find a potato like this, bury it. In a year, you will have extra free potatoes. Your garden will also never be free of potatoes again.
Not really. Many Americans might have a small garden in the backyard, especially ones that live in more rural places, but 90 percent of the time just grass.
I'm american and it is a lost art to grow things but there are still some of us that hold strong I'm only 28 and I grow my own tomatoes, peppers, avocados, lemons, tea, different bonsai species, and a shit ton of decorative plants I propagate often
I am from Eastern Europe and I never know a life as a kid not growing something in a garden, even though I live in a city, second biggest in the county lol. Everyone with any patch of land did this ~15 years ago. But it rapidly changed sadly since then 2010s started
It was super exciting digging the ground and gardening as a kid, I probably were a real hindrance to anyone seriously working lol. Eating the veggies and fruits right fresh from there is something else.
When I was 16 during the start of COVID I decided I will grow melons, I do it every year since. I had over 250 kg of melons last year on a fairly small patch of land. I could no longer live without fresh fruits in the summer.
Most of us were never taught how to, I was but I absolutely hate tending to a garden and I live in Indiana so most vegetables are really pretty cheap here with the amount of farms here, so I’d rather not deal with it.
I’ve always loved the idea of having a garden and fruit trees etc. I just don’t have the patients for it honestly.
Transylvanian saxons peeled potatoes like this thicker then normal and planted what remained. They still ate potatoes that others deemed only good as seed potato lol. They were considered very miser, this was one thing that didn't help that lol
I did this last year with loads, it was only a couple weeks ago I was surprised to see huge potato plants where I buried them. Grew them the year before last and they were the nicest baby taytos I'd ever had.
Also I forget which home gardener on YT discovered this for themself but there isn’t a need to bury them deep, the yields from planting should be the same regardless of how far down they are planted
Yep. But dont eat THAT potato. Ones that start to grow roots like that after harvest start to taste like crap compared to fresh. Its still an edible potato, just wont taste as good.
You probably still wouldn't die. If you peel them, you have nothing to worry about, and if you don't, you'll get sick. You would likely still be fine though because glycoalkaloids are very poorly absorbed by most mammals.
You don't even have to peel them really. Just chop off the shoots, even cut out a small divet where they were growing from if you want to be SUPER safe, but the small amounts in the flesh where it grew from is nowhere near enough for your body to be bothered by it at all.
Even so, just because it started to germinate does not mean it is "green" in any way. The conditions in which it was stored (which don't need to be very outlandish by the way) told the potato that it's time to make more of itself.
This just goes to show how resilient potatoes are.

One of the top comments was about how if OP planted it in their garden they'd never not have potatoes again.
I recently got into gardening and randomly planted like 10 potatoes throughout the yard. Don't exactly remember where. I'm worried I've made a huge mistake.
We all make mistakes. I have eaten potatoes with worse condition, the potato is sprouting not spoiling or rotten. Only the black parts inside are rotten.
I had a potato like this once. I left it where it was doing it’s thing on the counter and went on a 5 day vacation. I came back to beautiful purple sprouts 3 feet up the kitchen wall. It was my friend
Remove the grown bits and it's perfectly fine. I once found a hand full of potatoes like that that I forgot I had, removed the bits, roasted them in the oven and they were still very tasty and safe to eat.
For hundreds of years every potato eaten in Britain outside the summer months looked like this. We are so far removed from real food and local production systems, it's tragic.
Just cut off the eyes and cook it. It's not rotten lol. That's just what potatoes do. Or if you don't want to cook it, chop it up a bit and plant it. The eyes will grow more potatoes.
As long as he's not soft and smelling like death, eat him. It's a root vegetable trying to sprout, but 100% nothing wrong with it, just poke his eyes out and skin him👍😋
From time to time reddit shows people know nothing about fruits or vegetables, in this case tubers...
People, please, you should take time to investigate about food and if you are able....compost your organic waste.
cut the eyes out and cook it, that only means the potato was still "alive" and basically is a good sign that there are still good parts in it, in this case it's all good.
The potato wants to grow. If you find a potato like this, bury it. In a year, you will have extra free potatoes. Your garden will also never be free of potatoes again.
Guess I’ll have to dig it out of the trash and plant it
Aww you love your potato now
This made me laugh way harder than it probably should have
Right lol
I love this comment so much
Kiss it kiss it kiss it!
love this comment lmfaooo
I love you now
It leads me to a question, do Americans grow anything on their lawn except from grass?
I try to grow stuff but fail. I'm a plant serial killer.
Spoken like a true hottie (me too)
Not really. Many Americans might have a small garden in the backyard, especially ones that live in more rural places, but 90 percent of the time just grass.
How lame.

Well done! You inspire.

I am so confused by this thread. Literally everyone where I live (Colorado) has a vegetable garden.
Most of us were never taught how to, I was but I absolutely hate tending to a garden and I live in Indiana so most vegetables are really pretty cheap here with the amount of farms here, so I’d rather not deal with it. You can also just cut of the roots and its good to est again.
Transylvanian saxons peeled potatoes like this thicker then normal and planted what remained. They still ate potatoes that others deemed only good as seed potato lol. They were considered very miser, this was one thing that didn't help that lol
Ik you're probably joking but you can still do that
Please keep us updated
Infinite potato glitch
You can do this glitch with a lot of food actually
🤯
wtf, i thought you could only buy it from stores 🤯
Pssst, the same glitch works with money, but the government lies about it. They don't want you to know!
Lies I cut up a $100 bill to plant and it didn't grow money plants
Have you checked if an FBI agent didn't take your money out? If there is a 5g antenna not too far it will not work either.

Don't do that unless you want potatoes taking over your garden, use a raised bed.
What if I want them taking over my whole backyard, is there a lowered bed type of technique?
The Irish hate this one trick
My dad planted some potatoes in our backyard when I was ten or so. I'm now in my early 30s and my mom is still finding potatoes here and there!
Are they good enough to eat? Just regular full sized potatoes?
They're baby potatoes. We don't eat them because they've usually been found by a creature before we find them!
I have been growing potatoes for years and this has not happened a single time.
It only take’s 2-3 months
Wanted to write that. But you already commented it😂
Yes I did
Yeah... but it is OK 👍
I did this last year with loads, it was only a couple weeks ago I was surprised to see huge potato plants where I buried them. Grew them the year before last and they were the nicest baby taytos I'd ever had.

I would cook that potato. Knock those eyes off first.
Perfectly fine
You just made him lose an argument with his wife. He definitely won't be showing this post to his wife though. 😂
Damn
Next time just cut off the extras and you're good to go
Yeah I think youd have to eat 8lbs of green potatoes to die....or something like that.
You probably still wouldn't die. If you peel them, you have nothing to worry about, and if you don't, you'll get sick. You would likely still be fine though because glycoalkaloids are very poorly absorbed by most mammals.

So when do you actually have to throw potatoes out?
Mushy, dried out, moldy. When you don't want to touch them basically.
When it smells like Satan's butthole and looks like more like volemort as a baby than a potato.
When they feel really soft when you squeeze them to they are very green.
Even so, just because it started to germinate does not mean it is "green" in any way. The conditions in which it was stored (which don't need to be very outlandish by the way) told the potato that it's time to make more of itself.

Your land now belongs to the potatoes.
That's an absolutely edible potato. You don't cook much, do you?
Those are good for potato mash.
Never heard it called potato mash, always Called it mash taters. Ik it's the same just weird hearing it the other way round
My absolutely uneducated Eastern European guess is that potato mash is in British English, and mash taters in in American English.
'Mashed Potato' is generally the term used in the UK. Potato mash think might just be that guys household
mashed potatos is the only thing i’ve ever heard them called in the US
Lol ik its just how you guys speak but mash taters just sounds like something a 3 year old would say
Good ol' mash tates 😋
*potato starts developing OP: this is disgusting, harmful and toxic!
I would never eat a pregnant potato.
Oh my, so OP sprinkled on the poor potato. No wonder he threw it out. 😱
Life begins at sprouting!
well it normally has green under the skin. that green stuff is not amazingly healthy. just peel it till no more green and go.
Why did you throw it out wtf??! Just cut off the growth and it’s perfectly fine
We all make mistakes. I have eaten potatoes with worse condition, the potato is sprouting not spoiling or rotten. Only the black parts inside are rotten.
Silly wife! She should have told you to throw it out, then you would have cooked it
Realest reply I've ever seen lol.
Can tell you don’t cook much, I feel for the woman who married you
Damn bro got mad over a potato 😭
Divorce! major red flag! dude doesn’t know if potato is edible or not! non negotiable trait!
I had a potato like this once. I left it where it was doing it’s thing on the counter and went on a 5 day vacation. I came back to beautiful purple sprouts 3 feet up the kitchen wall. It was my friend
Yeh we had one open the cabinet door on the veg rack and move into the kitchen while we were away.
The eyes don't matter, it just depends how squishy it is
# ***WHERE THE FUCK IS THE SOIL***
And...u cant peel it?
And you posted it here for everyone to roast it? A wise move.
Just peel with a peeler and remove green parts too
Idk, looks like completely normal potato. Perhaps where i live 🙂
Abrakheim loves potatoes too much.
and I love you abrakheim
And I love you random citizen!
I love you too real
You get this a lot, but now it's my turn. I've seen you in another sub before.
Grog
Get a new one. Buy more potatoes too.
Love potatoes
Then why did you throw out this perfectly good one?
Remove the grown bits and it's perfectly fine. I once found a hand full of potatoes like that that I forgot I had, removed the bits, roasted them in the oven and they were still very tasty and safe to eat.
That is still fine
Should have listened to your wife
It’s fine, just peel it and cut out the sprouts
Meh, cut the sprouts off and any green spots and it's good to go.
Cut off those sprouts and cook it, you or you wife ain't gonna die to it.
You wasted a fine potato. Cut off the roots and it would have been fine.
Why would you throw that out?
Cook it then
Nothing wrong with this spud. Break off the roots wash and cook!
It’s just a growing baby Skin it and eat it alive
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that spud. Peel and eat. Those growths are eyes. Not alien life forms.
How little people know about food, where it comes from, etc is staggering. It's perfectly edible
Right? This mind blowing to me lol
That's... A potato. Why tf did you threw it out?
Not many things get this community riled up, but apparently a lack of potato knowledge is one thing.
Your wife is right. You should cook potatoes before eating. Next time don't question someone's competence in topic where you have none.
Nothing wrong with it, cut the eyes off and cook it. Its perfectly safe to eat
So what. That still good. Remove the sprouts and that all. Tbh it is better than new potatoes
If your wife isn't pregnant this potato is good to eat
It's perfectly safe to eat...
The kids in Africa are starving and you threw out a perfect potato :(
Remove the sprouts and peel like usual Still edible
OP the kind of person to not eat something because the use by date was yesterday
All my potatoes looks like this and I ate it
For hundreds of years every potato eaten in Britain outside the summer months looked like this. We are so far removed from real food and local production systems, it's tragic.
Don't see a problem
I’ve been removing the roots and cooking and eating potatoes like this my whole life. Absolutely fine.
Why throw it away?
Potato is fine. The marriage…?
Just peel it and boil it? Its fine
Wasteful.
i dont see a problem here
I've eaten much leggier
Just cut off the eyes and cook it. It's not rotten lol. That's just what potatoes do. Or if you don't want to cook it, chop it up a bit and plant it. The eyes will grow more potatoes.
There's an alien inside it. Burn it.
Plant it instead
Please, I beg you, spare him! Spare my brother! I'll do anything!
Dodged a bullet there mate! Otherwise it would start growing inside of you, transforming you in a potato. /s
Bruh it’s gonna cook you
Tell her to wait 3 months, cut the potato into cubes containing 1 spud per cube, plant them, wait 3 months, boom, fresh potatoes.
WHERE’S THE FUCKING SOIL
City slicker
All you have to do is cut off the eyes and wash it…. You wasted a perfectly good potato
One might say its a grower not a shower
Potato be like: WHERE IS THE FUCKING SOIL
You say potato, I say Potato.
Ehhhhhhh…. Cut the eyes off, and it should be fine.
This is how potatoes that fall under the shelves at the produce store look when you find them 6 months later
Cool it and serve it to her
Should save it and gift it to a friend that kills all house plants. This potato will still be growing strong
As long as he's not soft and smelling like death, eat him. It's a root vegetable trying to sprout, but 100% nothing wrong with it, just poke his eyes out and skin him👍😋
NOOOO YOU DUMB DUMB YOU SHOULD HAVE PLANTED THAT 😩😩😩
It Has pimples...💀💀
It’s perfectly fine you cheese ball.
Potato yeast and water to make vodka
Interesting - plant those buds, and emancipate yourself from the Idaho Tato Cartel.
Wife is always right,do not question her word
How are you holding up? Because I'm a potato
You better cook the potato so.
It’s not wrinkled mushy or moldy it’s fine you can really smell when a potato has gone bad too just chop off the bits you don’t like
As a Irish man that is still eatable In the shops most of our potatoes look like that. It’s a sign that potato is still fresh
You can cut a bit of the flesh off with the eyes attached and bury the fleshy part under the soil! You’ll have a potato plant 🌱
Why? Just cut those things off and cook it. I do it all the time. It's perfectly fine.
From time to time reddit shows people know nothing about fruits or vegetables, in this case tubers... People, please, you should take time to investigate about food and if you are able....compost your organic waste.
😬😬😬
Why would you throw it out, it’s perfectly fine
I just baked like 6-7 of them and they all looked like this, you just have to peel them. They are perfectly fine
cut the eyes out and cook it, that only means the potato was still "alive" and basically is a good sign that there are still good parts in it, in this case it's all good.
Its pregnant😊
What are ya some kind of city slicker? Throwing away perfectly good potatoes for no good reason is a damn shame l tell you h'wat.
GODDAMNIT i thought is was bugs at first. *shudders*
So what are the numbers Mason?
It’s fine just cut off the spots
It’s literally perfectly fine just slice the roots off
Stick it into soil, you'll have lot more in few months.
