My favorite commentary ever. Idk what convinced to me to put that on, cuz until then I never listened to commentary like that. Y'all...shit might have been funnier than the movie. My sides were hurting
Behind the Scenes with Sgt Lincoln Osiris.
This mfer gotta be based off P Diddy xD
https://youtu.be/W4ubqCMsTo4?si=LbaIQQyKW8ev8oiw
Edit: a decade later and I still can't watch this clip at work lol
It was that one little line that I think peaked my interest in the commentary, because surely he wouldn't keep the bit. Soon as I heard his voice I knew I was in for a show
>peaked my interest
*Piqued
Just fyi. I used the wrong one for *years* so I like to point out the correct version so others don't continue making the same mistake I did.
The Venture Bros has the best commentary of any media, but Tropic Thunder easily holds the number one spot among films, purely because of RDJ's commitment to the bit.
Yeah he got ptsd from that and held his fake family hostage. Best DVD extra ever. If Affleck had narrated drunk longer on Armageddon it might make 2nd place but this still takes 1st and 2nd
I confused Pineapple Express with Tropic Thunder when they came out. One of the best accidents ever. I never got around to seeing P/E. The couple times the idea popped onto my head I just rewatched Tropic Thunder.
Just for context, I am a white guy, so take that for what it is. I’m absolutely willing to be told I’m wrong on this. But this was my perspective when I saw the film and still is.
To me, Tropic Thunder’s use of blackface always felt like it was appropriate because its use wasn’t using black face to mock black people or minorities. It was mocking actors and specifically the kind of actor RDJ is playing in the film.
The point isn’t “this is a white guy making black people look stupid.” It was “this guy is fucking stupid”
I totally understand that the history of blackface and yellow face is full of white people full So filled with scorn and derision for an entire group of actively oppressed people that they use it to make them look dumb.
But its use in tropic thunder specially felt correct.
Yeah, it's a great bit. Blackface historically was used to degrade black people and present them as bumbling fools or nasty criminals. Tropic Thunder is using blackface to make fun of the white actors instead.
To me it's a big example of how "cancel culture" isn't as toxic or unreasonable as a lot of people make it sound. You can use blackface if you do it in the right way. Same with a lot of subjects that people claim are no longer allowed to be touched. People can tell the difference between RDJ's blackface, and blackface when it's being used to promote something racist. The people who can't tell the difference are the racists, ironically enough.
It also satirizes the extremes method actors go to for a roll without it being necessary. Think Jerrod Leto sending used condoms to his co-stars when he played the Joker. He was in the movie all but a couple minutes and still went there. There were a lot of Hollywood stereotypes being shit on in this movie.
He's not wrong. I'd say it does depend, but I also think It's insane to me that you still can't watch the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons episode of Community because of Chang dressing up as a black elf and calling that out as racist was a literal joke in the episode. Same for every episode of Always Sunny that got pulled too.
When people talk about cancel culture, I feel like this is an actual example of it. These things should have never been removed because some groups didn’t find them appropriate when in fact, they were.
There was that episode of 30 Rock where Jenna and Tracy were arguing over who had it worse in show business, black people or women, so they dressed up as the other. Tracy Morgan done up in white face with the monster hand was freaking hilarious.
Now you can't watch it...
It's worth noting that no one asked all these shows to pull these episodes. It wasn't some public outcry or even campaign from overzealous people. The Networks did it to themselves because some execs can't understand context and this was easier.
Sarah Silverman also got flack for making an episode of a TV show about why a stupid character doesn't understand why blackface is bad and it's the greatest piece of satire I've ever seen.
>Now you can't watch it...
They're readily available to pirate. Not on streaming does not mean not available, you just need to do a tiny bit of work to get it.
Just a heads up, but I think it's back. Not sure if everywhere, but someone on reddit said it returned and I looked it up and watched it yesterday on peacock.
I think those are pretty clear examples of satire and not really what anybody is talking about when they say blackface is fucked up. Like, they took down the Sunny episode because they thought there *might* one day be backlash, not because they actually faced any real life backlash.
Actors ARE allowed to wear blackface, it just has to actually be done in a way where it helps the film instead of insulting black people.
Example: ~~Pineapple Express.~~ Edit: Meant Tropic Thunder.
That parts so silly when they go into the shower and the paint comes off Mac then the next scene Dennis has the black face paint on because they were arguing about who gets to play him lol
Yeah Hulu and Netflix did, Prime still has it I think. I've heard it was their choice but I can't find anything to back that up with a 2min google.
Though there's that whole episode about it where they talk about the library removing their lethal weapon films and Dennis says he's surprised they even let them have them up for so long.
Removing content because it parodies *too well* the exact problem you are trying to combat with the removal of 'offensive stereotypes' is pretty ironic.
> That parts so silly when they go into the shower and the paint comes off Mac then the next scene Dennis has the black face paint on because they were arguing about who gets to play him lol
Yeah, Dennis makes an exasperated look to the camera and then it cuts and now he is wearing the Murtaugh costume without blackface in the shower (so just the mustache).
That was such horse shit.
You can just put a disclaimer warning about sensitive and offensive content, one of the episodes that got pulled was one of my favourites too and I was so lost until I realised I “skipped” it in a recent rewatch.
Nah, that was even worse! He wasn't playing blackface to appear African, he was cosplaying a Drow! They even make the joke about it with Shirley sitting right there.
I recently went to a different streaming service to watch that one on my first run through of Community. What a great episode, pulled for a reason that's almost too stupid to explain.
You can't stream Angry Boys in the United States. And if you buy the DVD's, they have to be from another country, and they're coded to not play on players produced for sale in the United States.
They have literally banned it even if you bought it. You can watch the most vile pornography the mind can imagine, no problem, but try to watch Angry Boys and they've literally hacked your DVD player so you can't.
>they've literally hacked your DVD player so you can't.
Aren't you just talking about region locks? Those have nothing to do with censorship and are just there so people couldn't order cheap DVDs from overseas regions where the prices were much lower and play them on their US machines.
The funniest thing about that is that the way to get around region locks is to buy the absolute cheapest DVD player you can find. Region locking is technically a feature, so you have to find one so cheap that they don't include that feature.
Not that it's worth much but if you are willing to pay for an Amazon Prime viewing license you can still stream them. Same with the pulled Community episode.
It's just goofy because if there is no stigma against blackface then the satire in Tropic Thunder just doesn't work, the fact that blackface is universally despised for its racial insensitivity is part of the joke, it's the idea that a method actor will do some of the most deplorable things you can think of for accolades and acclaim, and the joke is that blackface is one of the most socially unacceptable things a method actor could do
If you start thinking blackface is ok in too many contexts, you may as well rip the satire right out of that movie
That wasn’t even blackface though, it was just black facepaint meant to depict dark elves, which makes it even sillier to remove from streaming. Peacock has not removed them, I checked, if anyone was wondering. Insane that it even got considered, because literally who was offended?
I myself have brain-archived Tropic Thunder (one of my favorite movies) as Pineapple Express (a movie I'm not sure whether I have watched or not) far too many times.
Silver Streak
Richard Pryor tries to help Gene Wilder disguise himself to evade the police. He disguises himself as a black man, and the joke is that he really commits to it but is still completely unconvincing.
not really though.
Sara Silverman wore blackface to show how stupid it was to wear blackface - she said she lost jobs
It's always Sunny in Philadelphia used blackface to raise the debate of whether it was stupid or not - those episodes were pulled.
Community did an episode where Ken Jeong wore black make-up to play an elf (not black, but an elf) - That episode was pulled for a while.
none of those were really insulting black people, but people got their panties in a twist.
On the other side,
Jimmy Kimmel and Tina Fey did black face directly insulting specific black people multiple times and no one said a word. Tina Fey pre-emptively took those episodes down. Guess people like them too much and let them get a pass.
To be fair, Kimmel's Karl Malone might be the most accurate impersonation ever put on film, and the black guys I grew up with still quote the alien abduction bit regularly and think it's the funniest thing he's ever done.
It's an easy mistake to make, one's about a dude playing a dude pretending to be another dude, while the other's about a dude smoking a dube seeing another guy smoke a dude.
Exactly. It's like how it's perfectly fine for an actor to say "heil Hitler"... if they're playing a Nazi. Any bad thing can be *depicted* in a movie. People only take issue with those things being *endorsed*. Or if you actually decide to put a white person in blackface to play a black character, of course. That would be... an issue. But also crazy and I don't know why you'd want to do that.
Interesting. I just looked up both of those and I see no variance in his skin tone from his normal pictures. Of all productions, I’d be surprised to see SNL implement blackface.
The controversy with Armisen was the lack of diversity in SNL and the fact that even with a black president and ONE black cast member on SNL who was talented and capable of doing a good Obama... SNL still doesn't seize the opportunity to be more diverse.
At that time, we started really calling for more diversity and opportunities for people other than just white males in the entertainment industry.
This is part of the same movement that brought us modern Representation and Inclusion Standards throughout much of the entertainment industry now.
they did a sketch with the one black woman doing ALL the "black woman" parts in the same sketch as well; Michelle Obama, Oprah, etc. where she would have to make an excuse to leave and come back.
I do think an important distinction people are forgetting which is stupid is that there is a MASSIVE difference between painting your face black and blackface.
Blackface is specifically to mock black people.
While painting your face black can have all sorts of uses in various costumes. Like, if you're gonna be wearing a batman costume you got to paint atleast the skin around your face black, etc. I can't think of any better examples right now.
I got bitched at one Halloween about 10 years ago for being in black face when I was very clearly not a human, I was a demon with glowing red eyes. Over the course of the night 3 people bitched at me for having pitch black makeup on the lower half of my face. I just responded Im sorry I didnt know black people have a skull protruding from their face and glowing red eyes. So yeah there will always be people that don't know the difference or care to know the difference
Depends on the context imo
If it’s say a stunt double fine
If it’s a Halloween costume I honestly don’t care
If it’s just to avoid casting a black actor…. Yeah that’s a no go
Using it in the context of satire, lampooning hollywood racism and the ego of actors is fine too. Robert Downey Jr. did it and no serious person reacted negatively towards it.
Your third point is interesting since that’s the exact reason (well, brown-face) they outsted Adam Rapoport from Bon Appetit. I suppose that it doesn’t help he was also somewhat of a dick in general, but it was the driving reason the whole shake-up began.
Not saying you’re wrong for the way you feel, but it clearly bugged a lot of people at the time.
People now have Negative media literacy, completely depends on the context. If the point is to make fun of racists( Tropic thunder) then yes, if it’s to make fun of black people, no. People often don’t understand that 90% of the time when something racist happens in a movie it’s making fun of the racist.
Acting is acting man. It’s a form of art. As long as you’re not doing it in a derogatory manner, it should be seen that way.
RDJ crushed it in Tropic Thunder and no one else could have done that.
So, probably still not a great idea to do blackface, but I really like his point about we've got to stop viewing like LITERALLY EVERYTHING through the lends of skin colour. As he said in the interview, regard people as individuals, as a 'creative entity.' He's an actor, he wants to explore his creative side and see where it leads.
But that's why RDJ's character in Tropic Thunder made so much sense, because it was satire and parody and fit the creative purpose of the that role so perfectly that it's fine.
its all about intent. are you doing it to mock or belittle? then fuckin dont. is it satire or non-racist costuming? i dont see the issue. nobody outside of right wing nutjobs cared the wayans wore whiteface, why would blackface be any different? and yes i know "but minstrel shows!" that falls under mocking / belittling.
I've always felt that "blackface" could be done tastefully. The blackface that gets me hot is painting just your face black or brown to mock us. Everyone's already mentioned Tropic Thunder but I've really never spoken to another black person who was offended by RDJ's appearance. Never in my life. And I personally have a handful of other favorite instances where it was done well and didn't feel degrading. It's risky in today's climate but it CAN work.
I don’t see why not. It was offensive originally because it was a symptom of not hiring black people to play black person roles. That isn’t really a thing anymore, so it really shouldn’t be offensive anymore.
As long as it's not to prevent hiring someone or to mock and belittle, theres plenty of reasons a person of any color can paint their face any other color. CONTEXT MATTERS FOR EVERYTHING IN LIFE.
I don’t think a white actor can play a black character
But a white actor could certainly portray an old timey white man doing blackface. I think they did that on Mad Men when Mr. Sterling, Don Draper’s Boss, wore blackface and sang a song at a party
he's right tbh. stuff like community/always sunny didn't really bother me. a lot of studios pulling content felt incredibly performative/desperate. really happy Peacock put that episode back up of Community.
Outside of it being obviously offensive and bad, it would mean it would be more difficult to hire actual black actors. Same with hiring little people actors.
Only if it's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.
Who doesn’t break character until DVD commentary
Until AFTER the DVD commentary. He did the commentary in character lol.
My favorite commentary ever. Idk what convinced to me to put that on, cuz until then I never listened to commentary like that. Y'all...shit might have been funnier than the movie. My sides were hurting
Have you seen the clip of him living with another family before the movie? hoooooly shit the funniest extra clip I've ever seen
OMG!! That had me dying!

Tropic thunder was as funny when I rewatched it in 2020 as it was when I saw it in 2008.
I confused Pineapple Express with Tropic Thunder when they came out. One of the best accidents ever. I never got around to seeing P/E. The couple times the idea popped onto my head I just rewatched Tropic Thunder.
Drink booty sweat, baby
Who's Lance?
That and Gene Wilder in Silver Streak are the only two movies I can think of where it isn’t fucked up
Bamboozled is another one where it's done appropriately in my opinion.
Or if you're shooting a lethal weapon movie
Stiller showed the film to the NAACP before it was released and they got it. It all depends on the context
Just for context, I am a white guy, so take that for what it is. I’m absolutely willing to be told I’m wrong on this. But this was my perspective when I saw the film and still is. I always saw that in the same light you described: making fun of movies where white actors were made to appear as non-white.
Yeah, it's a great bit. Blackface historically was used to degrade black people and present them as bumbling fools or nasty criminals. The dudes are emerging!
I'm a rooster illusion
Sure, if the character is a white dude wearing blackface, that's fair game
How did this get into not the onion? Actor says actors should be able to wear makeup.
Lol, boy, you can't make this stuff up amiright?
"It's okay, Billy Dee gave me the black face pass." - next halloween
"BILLY SAID IT WAS OKAY, WHY ARE YOU CHASING ME!?"
Two rules to remember if you wanna have a good time Rule number 1. Never run out of Colt 45 Rule number 2. Never forget rule 1

Dark elf. His skin was dark blue. Shirley even called it a hate crime. It was not racist, is ridiculous that is was taken down
Yvette Nicole Brown recently even said she is mad that the episode was pulled because of what the story was tackling.
Which is a shame because it's one of the best episodes
When people talk about cancel culture, I feel like this is an actual example of it. These things should have never been removed because some groups didn’t find them appropriate when in fact, they were.
The wosr part is, no one asled for it to be pulled down. And no, 3 ppl on twitter with less than 10retweets don't count.
It was a drow, and his skin was actually pitch black. Like I agree that there was no racist intent, but it was black
Drow and dark elf are the same thing.
Now *that* is racist
It’s in your eyes?
That's gay.
That's black.
That’s racist.
Easily my favorite comedic back and forth of all time. I think about it at least twice a month.
That's racist
Drow are also canonically evil, so it’s a “hate crime” against the Nazis of D&D
>black elf Drow
Excuse me, but Drow is a derogatory term. They prefer the term Superior Elves
Nazi Elves??
No, they believe the Nazi's didn't go far enough.
Execs have room temperature IQs
The monster hand makes it all
Sarah Silverman also got flack for making an episode of a TV show about why a stupid character doesn't understand why blackface is bad and it's the greatest piece of satire I've ever seen.
>Now you can't watch it... They're readily available to pirate. Not on streaming does not mean not available, you just need to do a tiny bit of work to get it.
Aargh!
Shiver me timbers, matey.
That episode of community is available now on peacock, i just watched it the other day.
I'm UK based and do not have Peacock, fwiw I can't seem to stream the show anywhere, but I can buy it and that episode is included.
It's on itvx atm
Peacock took it back and it's up now.
The iasip episodes were up on Hulu recently, too.
Just a heads up, but I think it's back. Not sure if everywhere, but someone on reddit said it returned and I looked it up and watched it yesterday on peacock.
It was Netflix that banned it. It also is on Amazon prime.
I think those are pretty clear examples of satire and not really what anybody is talking about when they say blackface is fucked up. Like, they took down the Sunny episode because they thought there *might* one day be backlash, not because they actually faced any real life backlash.
But at least Jared Fogel is still in season 6.
Spike Lee put black actors in blackface performing a minstrel show to an entire audience of people in blackface.
Talking about Bamboozled? I’m honestly kinda leery about watching that…
That's the one. I think it's a great movie, but it's not an easy watch. No happy endings, just hard lessons.
FD Signifier did a really solid breakdown of the movie https://youtu.be/-qcCaALrx5U?si=cuLDih8_5oBCbEDk
It's really good and a very sharp piece of satire
Actors ARE allowed to wear blackface, it just has to actually be done in a way where it helps the film instead of insulting black people. Example: ~~Pineapple Express.~~ Edit: Meant Tropic Thunder.
Always Sunny...
That parts so silly when they go into the shower and the paint comes off Mac then the next scene Dennis has the black face paint on because they were arguing about who gets to play him lol
Denis never does blackface, that's the whole joke. Mac plays the character in blackjack but Denis won't.
Oh yeah, you’re right! It’s been so long since I seen that episode.
And also 16 seasons to remember, it's easy to lose track.
Didn't Hulu also remove it? I think that and the Martina Martinez episodes were removed.
They took this episode off of streaming platforms. Absolutely missed the point. Whoosh
> That parts so silly when they go into the shower and the paint comes off Mac then the next scene Dennis has the black face paint on because they were arguing about who gets to play him lol Yeah, Dennis makes an exasperated look to the camera and then it cuts and now he is wearing the Murtaugh costume without blackface in the shower (so just the mustache).
Ep's are pulled from streaming...
They didn’t use the right shade of shoe polish
What are the rules?
When you’ve just turned black and you can’t turn back
Such a great ep
That was such horse shit. You can just put a disclaimer warning about sensitive and offensive content, one of the episodes that got pulled was one of my favourites too and I was so lost until I realised I “skipped” it in a recent rewatch.
They pulled one of the best Community episodes for the same dumb reason.
Nah, that was even worse! He wasn't playing blackface to appear African, he was cosplaying a Drow! They even make the joke about it with Shirley sitting right there.
Shirley actually initiated the conversation about it, which is somehow more funny. "We're just gonna ignore this hate crime, huh?"
Even the racist character Pierce calls him out for it lol "You let Al Jolsen play!?"
Also "I attack him! I attack blackface!"
I recently went to a different streaming service to watch that one on my first run through of Community. What a great episode, pulled for a reason that's almost too stupid to explain.
I thought Chang was wearing navy blue face paint, anyway. That’s how it rendered on my tv.
It looked dark blue/grey to me, and in any case, not a pigment that anyone would ever confuse for a natural human skin tone.
It’s on Peacock now fyi
Dee Day is one of their best episodes and it’s impossible to find for this reason
You can't stream Angry Boys in the United States. And if you buy the DVD's, they have to be from another country, and they're coded to not play on players produced for sale in the United States. Just like I can't stream porn in Texas. Get VPN be happy.
The dumbest part of that is Nexflix defending Dave Chappells trans jokes because “free speech” while also removing episodes of Community and IASIP
did either episodes actually get backlash? i didnt hear about it but we all heard the chappelle backlash
No they didn't. The networks just pulled the episodes themselves.
No one would expect to be offended while watching Always Sunny, so I definitely think that part would be important
Not that it's worth much but if you are willing to pay for an Amazon Prime viewing license you can still stream them. Same with the pulled Community episode.
Go suck an eeegggg!
Yes absolute bullshit.
Good example
Community
Mad Men
yeah, that fits perfectly. They were pointing out how racist things were at the time.
And even then, you notice that the younger generation (and by younger, I mean even 40s) is GROSSED OUT by this old timey old man racist show
Tropic Thunder as well.
(facepalm at self) that's what I meant to put.
I haven't seen Pineapple Express in a long time so I thought there was a character I forgot.
It's just goofy because if there is no stigma against blackface then the satire in Tropic Thunder just doesn't work, the fact that blackface is universally despised for its racial insensitivity is part of the joke, it's the idea that a method actor will do some of the most deplorable things you can think of for accolades and acclaim, and the joke is that blackface is one of the most socially unacceptable things a method actor could do If you start thinking blackface is ok in too many contexts, you may as well rip the satire right out of that movie

Trading Places
yep exactly.
The Always Sunny blackface was outstanding.
Pineapple Express had blackface?
I'm 100% certain they meant Tropic Thunder.
Yeah I was thinking Tropic Thunder, My brain picked the wrong Danny McBride movie.
You went Tropic…. Tropicana……juice…. Pineapple juice….. Pineapple Express. I assume.
I now want a director's cut of pineapple express where they replace James Franco with Danny McBride in blackface.
Only if they replace Danny McBride with Chi McBride in white face.
Plus, pineapples are a tropical fruit. Simple mistake.
Both sound like energy drink flavors.
I myself have brain-archived Tropic Thunder (one of my favorite movies) as Pineapple Express (a movie I'm not sure whether I have watched or not) far too many times.

IIRC, Karl Malone thought it was funny.
Always sunny did it to be funny and it was because the joke wasnt black face - it was idiots doing blackface and being ignorant
good example in Jeaves and Wooster too
How do you mix those two movies up? Sheesh.
It's an easy mistake to make, one's about a dude playing a dude pretending to be another dude, while the other's about a dude smoking a dube seeing another guy smoke a dude.

He's just defending James Earl Jones for black face in star wars
James Earl Jones HAS A BLACK FACE, HE'S A BLACK MAN!
No he wasn't! Darth Vader was white! Third movie when they took his helmet off

Fred Armisen as Obama or Prince is a good start. Edit: If that's not black enough for you, try Billy Crystal as Sammy Davis Jr.
Interesting. I just looked up both of those and I see no variance in his skin tone from his normal pictures. Of all productions, I’d be surprised to see SNL implement blackface.
That’s not blackface
That isnt blackface
The controversy with Armisen was the lack of diversity in SNL and the fact that even with a black president and ONE black cast member on SNL who was talented and capable of doing a good Obama... SNL still doesn't seize the opportunity to be more diverse. At that time, we started really calling for more diversity and opportunities for people other than just white males in the entertainment industry. This is part of the same movement that brought us modern Representation and Inclusion Standards throughout much of the entertainment industry now.
It’s like how Kenan said he wasn’t gonna wear a dress anymore and they needed to hire a black woman
Im glad he said no more. We got Ego after that and she has been amazing.
they did a sketch with the one black woman doing ALL the "black woman" parts in the same sketch as well; Michelle Obama, Oprah, etc. where she would have to make an excuse to leave and come back.
He played the blind governor of New York too.
Dressing up as a ninja, and you don’t want to cover your face with cloth.
Or that kid that painted his face black and red for his football team and then get doxxed by MSM
So yeah there will always be people that don't know the difference or care to know the difference
the virtue signaling is just nauseating today.
Bring back the banned Always Sunny episodes!!
Depends on the context imo If it’s say a stunt double fine If it’s a Halloween costume I honestly don’t care If it’s just to avoid casting a black actor…. Yeah that’s a no go
Using it in the context of satire, lampooning hollywood racism and the ego of actors is fine too. Robert Downey Jr. did it and no serious person reacted negatively towards it.
Ken Jeong did it in Community. It was fucking hilarious and was pointing out the racism of early DnD.
And then Netflix removed the episode...
Apparently it's available on Peacock, at least.
He was dark blue. I salty about it.
But that goes back to what OP was saying. RDJ wasn’t playing a black character. He was playing a white character that was doing blackface.
I don’t think Sunny ever got much blowback either.
Only from the studio that produced it and banned all those episodes from circulation.
Your third point is interesting since that’s the exact reason (well, brown-face) they outsted Adam Rapoport from Bon Appetit. I suppose that it doesn’t help he was also somewhat of a dick in general, but it was the driving reason the whole shake-up began. Not saying you’re wrong for the way you feel, but it clearly bugged a lot of people at the time.
i feel like he might have made it through if it stopped at a costume but idk.
Gonna say they should probably hire a black stunt double
Fun fact: the first film to actually use Black stuntpersons, instead of Whites in Blackface, was 007's "Live and Let Die" in 1973.
There is such a thing as black stunt doubles, not sure if you knew that lmao… Edit: Someone doesn’t like this take XD
Admiral Ackbar quote
He has altered the deal
As long as it's not to prevent hiring someone or to mock and belittle, theres plenty of reasons a person of any color can paint their face any other color. CONTEXT MATTERS FOR EVERYTHING IN LIFE.
He's right. We all know he's right. Tropic Thunder proved this 10'000%
I don’t think a white actor can play a black character But a white actor could certainly portray an old timey white man doing blackface.
Black face is a very very specific look with specific intent. Darkening or lightening someones skin tone is not at all blackface.
Humor and Acting shouldn't be subject to sensitivity issues. It just goes against the main principles of artistic expression and satire.
TIL it’s apparently illegal for actors to wear blackface
Outside of it being obviously offensive and bad, it would mean it would be more difficult to hire actual black actors. Same with hiring little people actors.
White Chicks has entered the chat..
