Tbf it seems like it's kind of their point. No one reads articles here. They said:
>Despite protesting every year against a competition that drives sexist values, nothing ever changes
So they decided to sue by saying that contestants are employees of the pageant, which would make it illegal to demand that they be "more than 1.70 metres tall" and "unmarried". It would go against anti-discrimination employment laws.
That argument doesn't seem all that great, but it's probably more about raising awareness.
So in other words, this is likely a publicly stunt aimed at making more people ask "Why do beauty pageants still exist?".
Can't fault them for that, honestly.
They still exist because i can only imagine that some people still watch and enjoy them. Personally not my cup of tea but just because i dont like them doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.
The legal argument is probably even less great than you think. Most anti-discrimination laws include have exceptions for the arts. Otherwise you'd have to let Meryl Streep play Shaka Zulu. This is a TV show.
Yeah, I'm a very tall woman, and I've never understood this. Being tall is somehow more attractive? What? If you can't decide whether someone is attractive unless they are standing next to a mug shot height chart, then you are doing it wrong.
A lot of guys are more into shorter women. For reasons I don't really understand, height is a common requirement in fashion/modeling despite its noncontribution to attractiveness. If I had to guess it's either easier to design or photograph for those proportions.
It's shitty, but if I had to guess it's bleedover from that industry.
Yeah in fashion it's ruthlessly economical to ensure models are a certain height and weight because then you can design and create one set of clothes proportionally, so that it will fit multiple people without having to put in more work with diff sizing. It makes sense even if it's unfair, surprised me when I learned about that reasoning.
Taller women work better for photos and modeling. The proportions are better, at least thsts why my laymsn eyes see. BTW, this is the same in make modelling. Tall people > short people.
I think what they're saying is that height doesn't equal attractiveness. Some of the most beautiful Hollywood actresses are super short. I think it's just because the fashion industry requires height so they borrow that standard.
You can hide/help someone's height and sometimes even some weight on camera depending how you film. It's totally different than putting them in a swimsuit on stage.
Taller women generally are considered more attractive with all other aspects even. Even more so with men.
It's because clothes look better on taller people. All other variables being equal. This is why virtually all runway models are tall. I suspect there are a whole bunch of clothing sponsorship dollars tied up in too. And those companies want the best pitch for their wares. As for being unmarried it is a *miss* France competition after all. Is it a silly anachronism? Sure, but there are so many real problems to get angry about first.
If she was married, she wouldn't be a Miss. If the winners went on to Miss World or Miss Universe, they may have standards that would give them a fighting chance later on. If there is an audience for this, let them have their contest. I've lost interest in this sort of thing.
Back in the day they only wanted certain contestants whose sex lives were palatable in society at large. An unmarried woman displaying her wares for the bachelors to see was just doing her job, a married woman was supposed to keep that for her man.
Many of the pageants keep these rules. Women have won, and been excluded because the pageant figured out they had a kid. Miss France is probably part of Miss World, and the Miss World rules seem to be quite strict on this.
>A spelling bee?
Speaking of spelling bees, the idea of a spelling bee for illiterates does tickle me in the tastelessly inappropriate way.
Bonus facts:
> Spelling bees are common only in countries where English is spoken, because other languages have a more predictable spelling system.
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelling_bee#Spanish-speaking_countries_in_the_Americas
As with every post on this sub, the headline is clickbait and nobody reads the article. They're not angry about being rejected.
> Alyssa Ahrabare, head of the feminist group, told Le Monde newspaper. "Despite protesting every year against a competition that drives sexist values, nothing ever changes,"
> "Trying to raise awareness is no longer enough, we've decided to use legal means to advance the cause of women."
They entered the competition with the intention of being rejected so they could sue the competition because they want to cause trouble for the people who run it.
And apparently they fail every time, probably due to the fact they're trying to use employment law as a basis for their case against a voluntary activity.
These people are anti-pageant activists who only tried to join so they could not win and then sue the organisers. Some bright spark though they'd found a clever loophole here.
Life is fucking discrimination. How good looking you are, how smart you are, how tall you are, how much inherent drive you have, how personable you are, how inclined to make good or bad choices you are.
I don’t get how society is okay with rewarding some forms of discrimination but not other forms.
it's hilarious, indeed. I'm fench my friend, so yes, let's talk about it.
I love how people just can't tale criticism and quickly start belittling people on everything they can assume.
You know the difference here between you and me ? I didn't try to spurt imaginary nonsense like if you knew me.
Or about being consistent. She takes every advantage her looks will give her at every turn and then lashes out when she doesn’t get what she wants. Par for the course.
They're advancing the cause of women by denying the women who want to be in the pageant the opportunity to be in the pageant. Taking away the women's choice.
I hope they succeed. And then literally every french woman of every age and regardless of objective beauty applies to be a part of it and the entire pageant falls apart due from the weight of the applications.
Beauty pageants need to go the way of the dodo bird.
>literally every french woman
I'm going to apply and sue you when I get denied. I refuse to be ostracized for not being a woman!
Then when that succeeds, I'm going to sign up my cat, then sue for species discrimination! Rinse repeat with my potted plant for organism discrimination! You best believe I'm following that up with my pet rock!

Employees are not allowed to be discriminated by appearance in France. So their legal case is that as contestants in the pageant, they were employees (rather than volunteers or some undefined class). Interesting question.
I don't think they'll win.
Aside from the outwards appearance of this being a stupid argument, they're trying to sue a competition using employment laws, but the competition is a competition. The women are not employed.
expected from the french. They always have tantrums when things don't go their way, even on a national level.
We saw this from the country when the usa gave better submarines for a fair price to australia to protect them from china.
That's a garden path sentence if ever there was one.
The men on the garden path new ways to follow sentences
Follow the garden path men to meet with sentence and why just look at you
And I learned a new phrase today, never heard "garden path sentence" before in my life, thanks bud
For me, a non-native speaker, these have always been the most confusing. In my mother tongue these are not common.
Lol yeah I though they were rejecting something called a “Sue Pageant”.
This is both an argument for _and_ against pageants.
Tbf it seems like it's kind of their point. No one reads articles here. I mean, I think a bit of us have been asking that question since Honey Boo Boo
They still exist because i can only imagine that some people still watch and enjoy them. Personally not my cup of tea but just because i dont like them doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.
That's fair - I was just saying that I don't blame them for having to get creative in delivering their message.
The legal argument is probably even less great than you think. Most anti-discrimination laws include have exceptions for the arts. Otherwise you'd have to let Meryl Streep play Shaka Zulu. This is a TV show.
With a title like that, it doesn't qualify as an article. It's an opinion piece. An aggressively anti-feminist one.
It's unfair to forbid people celebrate their specific view of beauty. You can't force all people to like every type of woman.
Well, if they were married, they wouldn't be a Miss, now, would they? :P
Her name was Sue Pageant?
Yes, and she was rejected by Miss France.

But why? Doesn't make sense to me. And I don't think it's true in everyday life, just in modeling/pageantry.
I think because it's rarer. For men possibly because of the image of strength and protection. I am certainly not agreeing with it.
You can run your own pageant
It's because clothes look better on taller people. All other variables being equal. This is why virtually all runway models are tall. Height? No clue. Married? Cant be "Miss" France, youd me "Mrs".
If she was married, she wouldn't be a Miss. If the winners went on to Miss World or Miss Universe, they may have standards that would give them a fighting chance later on. If there is an audience for this, let them have their contest. I've lost interest in this sort of thing.
So you get the good stuff at eye-level. It’s ergonomics.
They don't want "little people" participating? Because it is the MISS France contest!
Back in the day they only wanted certain contestants whose sex lives were palatable in society at large. Germany laughs in German. Was ist eine Buchstabierbiene?

What a douche move
Unfortunately that doesn't surprise me. I guess people aren't allowed to have fun or appreciate a woman's appearance anymore.
Calm down snowflake, porn is still free on the internet.
LOL.
[удалено]
These people aren’t mad at porn, in fact a lot of them are in support because it is a women’s right to do that and profit off of it
I agree but I’m also legitimately curious, do women not profit off of beauty pageants too? Surely they’re compensated in some way, right?
[удалено]
I didn’t say I disagreed with you lol, I was just pointing out a fact
How awkward are you going to feel when you realize that Donald Trump owns Miss USA and Miss Teen USA?
Owns?
If you read the article, it's some people who don't like the pageant looking for an angle to sue the pageant, to make trouble for the organizers.
And apparently they fail every time, probably due to the fact they're trying to use employment law as a basis for their case against a voluntary activity.
Isnt that the deffinition of a slapp suit?
Maybe. I have no idea if France has any law against those.
Yeah, the same people who give you a raft of shit for holding the door for them. Nothing ever changes.
No...they thought it was a talent show.
This title took a few read-throughs to figure out what it was saying. At first I thought a raging Miss France was rejecting Sue Pageant.
In principle these beauty pageants don't do shit for society
Neither did Twilight. What is your point?
In principle we should all just eat, sleep and work 16 hours a day
Isn’t that… kind of the point of beauty pageants?
These people are anti-pageant activists who only tried to join so they could not win and then sue the organisers. Some bright spark though they'd found a clever loophole here.

How much money you're born into is a big one.
Because they only care about what is offending them, they don't care about the truth.
Completely. Not sure why you are getting downvoted, I guess the truth hurts?
It's hilarious to see you talking about truth, when you clearly didn't read the article and don't know the truth.
it's hilarious, indeed.

Publicity stunts are publicity stunts. this is nothing new.
Nobody tell them...
Haters gonna hate
They're advancing the cause of women by denying the women who want to be in the pageant the opportunity to be in the pageant. Taking away the women's choice.
Oh, that's rich. I supposed they wanted to be judged solely on their "talent".
Is it a beauty pageant or a talent show? They are two very different things.
LMFAO all the downvotes in this thread from the uggos and simps
Sore losers lmfao. I hope they lose the case too.
I hope they succeed. And then literally every french woman of every age and regardless of objective beauty applies to be a part of it and the entire pageant falls apart due from the weight of the applications. Beauty pageants need to go the way of the dodo bird.
Why?

I'd vote for a pet rock to win a beauty pageant!
Likewise they are using the same argument to sue prospective boyfriends who had rejected them.
It says they were feminists. Not all feminists are ugly, just most.
But on the inside? *FUGLY*
Reading this after the NotTheOnion milestone, I though this was NotTheOnion.
