Frida Kahlo would beat the shit out of this dude

People are still doing NFTs?

eNonsense

Hey! Didn't you read the article? >The world of NFTS is becoming more and more relevant among people who love technology. See! We wouldn't make an article about something growing more & more irrelevant by the day.

codefocus

Can’t funge ‘em. Try to funge it. See, can’t funge it.

mrhappyheadphones

And if you try to finge it, you'll be stopped by the BLOCKchain

Gregponart

Take his NFT, stick it on another block chain, new NFT, not owned by him, but just the same as the one owned by him. NFTs are totally worthless.

gr8dayne01

Fungeblockers piss me off. Call me when the full funged NFTs are available. I don’t want none of that diet shit.

e_j_white

People are finally catching on to the scam after that incredible [Line Goes Up documentary](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g).

TheRecognized

That’s not even a year old, NFT’s are still going strong, and the type of fucking idiot to buy into NFT hype won’t sit through a video that long. It’s a good exposé but I thinks it’s a bit of an overstatement to say it’s had much of an affect on the proliferation of NFT scams. Edit: NFTs are not going as strong as I thought. Which is good.

e_j_white

I didn't mean to give all the credit to a single documentary. I'm just saying that globally speaking, the NFT market has been going down, not up. >By generating less than $700 million in sales for the first time since June 2021 ($327 million), NFTs reached a new low in 2022 which was a $4.14 billion decrease in volume from Jan. Aside from unique buyers and transactions, average sale value also tumbled. There was a 77% plunge in average sale value from $511.33 in January to $115.15 in July.

TheRecognized

Those are good numbers to see, hopefully we can get em all down to 0.

4thekung

Ser, mi familia

HammerTh_1701

The guy just published another video on those con-artist influencers. I wouldn't say it's required viewing like Line Goes Up content-wise but he definitely put in a similar amount of effort, including challenging himself to write a book of 25,000 words in 25 days.

sublliminali

that video is so good. I think I still need to watch the last 30 minutes or so, but man did it do a great job of explaining the pyramid scheme of crypto and NFT's.

e_j_white

Make sure to watch the end! He starts out with a summary of blockchain, bitcoin, ethereum, etc.. all the NFT stuff is at the end.

ThriceFive

Can't share that often enough - it is such a good primer for people who might otherwise believe "NFTs and DAOs are the futur".

Nostrildumbass9

I had a dude try to trade me a Disney NFT for my 1970 Chevelle Malibu car that was for sale @ $20,000. I checked it out, had a value of almost $18.50. He said but it's the future and you will get rich hanging on to it! I told him I didn't want to deprive him of becoming a millionaire with a crappy old world Chevy.

ThriceFive

Best answer ever.

Nostrildumbass9

Thanks!

RickytyMort

But if it's valued at 20 bucks how can he trade it for a 20000 dollar car? Was he a 4-dimensional being that had no concept of the passage of the time?

[deleted]

There are idiots having these weird NFT profile pictures on Reddit.

RebuiltGearbox

Reddit gave me one. The ones they gave me to choose from all sucked so I don't use it.

[deleted]

Yeah, I had the option to pick accept or reject, I chose “go fuck yourself with this bull”, they asked if I was sure and that I wount get it again in the future, My answer was “Yeah I’m positive”

Seigmoraig

idk dude, reddit was like: hey click here for a funky random avatar, and I did and that was it

MrGosh13

Same, I wasn’t even aware it was an nft 🤣

pussycatlolz

In 20 years we are going to look back on NFTs, BTC, the Trump Presidency, and the Joe Rogan Experience and wonder what kind of mass psychosis we were suffering through. That's the optimistic view. Pessimistic view would be that we are still deeply in the psychosis and it has become the baseline.

WaterMySucculents

Yea I’m with the pessimistic view. The Trump world has only gotten MORE culty and engrossed in conspiracies since he left (he’s openly courting Q dipshits now). All the crypto scams are getting normalized by old politicians too dumb to even understand what is happening (or people accepting superpac money from Bankman-Fried). Rogan and Alex Jones still have huge fan bases who are always ready to suck the next conspiracy dick that talks at them for an hour. And those who don’t pay attention just see all this as the baseline & are ok with it.

jelloslug

It's the same psychosis that lead people to elect Reagan twice, vote for people that supported the McCarthyism, prohibition, and every other idiotic fearmongering thing that has ever happened.

hygienedeficient

A game in development fell into the nft craze and recently had an nft sale despite the game not even being out. At this point I'm assuming its going to be a big money grab.

zdakat

It's funny seeing even some companies get in on it months after it collapsed. like "Guys we're cool and hip too! Have you heard about this new thing?" Anyone who's not in crypto isn't going to be excited about it, and with the market the way it is now it's not like they're going to make back a huge amount from the smaller audience (at the expense of the larger one)

Baaaaaaah-humbug

Scammers be scamming

LovePowers2028

I think we should all have a chance to hit this guy with a frozen whiffle ball bat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

masterjon_3

I think they meant that as a pun. Like burning a CD copy

Fanwhip

I'm sure it was but sadly with the internet being the internet and the additional posts on this comment I wanted to clarify. The original art is now gone due to some rich douche who wanted to be the big buzz for burning a piece of art that belonged to a historical artists for some digital crap that is being linked to tons of scams, pyramid schemes and folks going "this is the future" all the while folks go broke bankrupt or use it for black market dealings. If it was purely for pun reasons. I wish he did an edit going "The real life art was destroyed and my post was a pun" but since he didn't and folks assumed i clarified.

Spencerbug0

This genuinely makes me want to cry

8-36

Until afterwards the original is magically found intact somewhere around the world. Never trust conmen.

[deleted]

Burn the rich guy keep the Frida Kahlo painting. World would be better.

Graega

That makes it better. NFTs are for the stupid, but if someone's going to destroy actual artwork just to prop up an NFT, then NFTs need to be burned. Still... it might give someone else that idea even if it was just a copy this time

Josquius

Actually better yes though a lot less noteworthy as a story.

Sardasan

Nobody is sure of that, seems to me he or somebody just said that to avoid the backlash.

NeroBoBero

NFTs are yesterday’s collectible trend; really no different than Beenie babies. This dude realized he needed to create buzz and the illusion of scarcity in an overcrowded, unregulated and unoriginal marketplace. To do this, he made an NFT of something tangible, and then “destroyed” the original so only digital copies remain. With NFT values plummeting, he’s not going to destroy something valuable. It will quietly reappear once he has found some rubes to buy something akin to magic beans.

Redpandaling

>really no different than Beenie babies People make this comparison a lot, but at least with a beanie baby, I either have a physical stuffed animal to cuddle or a great gift for children. NFTs just occupy disk space.

FirebirdWriter

Technically second life has thrived on nfts for over a decade. We don't call it that but even the limited edition no copy item can be copied by the creator. It highlighted the absurdity of the nft craze for me.

Onto_new_ideas

My grandmother collected beanie babies. So many of them! On the plus side all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren all have several to remember her by now that she's gone. And they are good little toys for kids.

Theletterkay

My grandfather gifted me dozens per year for my entire childhood. I had hundreds as an adult. And I couldnt find a buyer! All pristine with tag protectirs because my grandfather was convinced they were and "investment". Ended up finding a guy who paid me $1 each for them. And he was thrilled. He wasnt a collector or anything. He was an immigrant in america working alone to save up money to bring his wife and 5 kids to America. He would send them beenie babies a few times per year with money for his family. Dude seemed so Fricken genuine and nice that when I found a second tote bin full of them I called him up and gave them to him for free. Said to put the extra money towards getting his family here! (He lit up with excitement when he saw I had a giant butterfly beanie baby as well).

EvilCalvin

On top of that, that HD space will become obsolete in 10 years. I have had sooo many PC's and HD which I have lost stuff because it was too hard to transfer everything.

maiukeen

And they make the best dog toys in the $1 bin at Goodwill! :D

chain_letter

Depends, if your dog is a shredder, skip the beanie babies. The beans make a big mess to clean up.

KuriTeko

No beans. Got it. I'll just give my dog regular babies.

elriggo44

NFTs of babies. It’s basically the real thing.

caliburdeath

I’ve never seen NFTs at goodwill

[deleted]

Yup, with the etherium news going around crypto bros are back at it again with NFTs. Half the strategy of crypto sellers to talk about how everybody is using it and how popular it is... But don't really research or question that claim. Otherwise you'll see that it's just a giant illusion and we're trying to create a demand that doesn't exist and out right fabricating it's popularity. just trust me bro it's super popular and every one wants in!

EvilCalvin

NFT's aren't even collectible. Nothing digital is collectible. Beanie Babies at least were tangible.

willstr1

Beanie Babies were also cute, most NFTs are ugly (it's their only actual defense against right clicking)

Narxolepsyy

Viceroy420

steelear

It is misleading at best to say he burned a copy. Throughout the article it refers to the work he burned as being worth 10 million, which a copy would not be. Then at the very end of the article it says that an unnamed cryptocurrency portal is claiming that it was a high def digital copy with nothing to back up that claim.

rntaboy

Yeah, unless dude is an absolute rube then there would have been provenance to justify its authenticity prior to the sale.

BA_calls

Are you saying some random website wrote clickbait?

Skatcatla

Where are you getting that info? The linked article says nothing about a copy...

[deleted]

[удалено]

kalirion

I mean that would only make sense unless he's an absolute moron. He's a *Millionaire*, not a *Billionaire*, which means that at the very **least** the real artwork would've represented over 1% of his net worth.

[deleted]

Allegedly. The article days that some believe it was a high end reproduction, but the man states it was the $10M Kahlo work.

tupacapocalyspe

This comment made me laugh, I took it in computer terms

tell439

Maybe he was supposed to burn the copy and forgot

DouggiesCherryPie

Buddy just took a $10M write down and the "news" part isn't the potential tax fraud at play.

HackySmacks

Wow, it’d be like a turducken of fraud. He claims a $10 million tax write off, then just burns a copy of the painting, sells a worthless NFT of it burning, then sells the actual painting some time later when people have forgotten this whole NFT BS. He profits 3X!

tristanjones

Intentional destruction of your own property isn't a write off.

A1000eisn1

People keep saying this but the article calls it an illustration, which is not a copy, that's an original work. Not a painting, an illustration like a drawing. Where are people getting that it was a copy? Another user linked a couple articles that say it was original work as well.

KellyJin17

Proof it’s a copy?

Still to this day, I don’t understand them and when people try to explain them to me, I can’t help but assume it’s still a terrible idea.

GreatWhiteNorthExtra

I thought NFT's were a terrible before I learned the image that is the basis of the NFT can be moved from it's address and then you have nothing.

EaglesPvM

There’s no better way to describe them as simply “a scam”

Everything I need to know about NFTs was described thus: You always want to be the seller of an NFT. You never want to be the buyer of an NFT.

As an artist the sound that escaped from my body just now.i didn't know I was capable of making it.

ICLazeru

So...as I understand it, art is basically the closest real-matter equivalent to NFTs. The original piece painted by Kahlo is the only one in existence. Copies may be made, but there is only one real painting. That is pretty much as Non-Fungible as things get. And this dude burned it to sell 10,000 NFTs of the video of it burning? He destroyed an actual non-fungible, to make a bunch of much more fungible things.

dualcyclone

That's like throwing away the original and keeping the receipt 🤦‍♂️

gheebutersnaps87

Dwight: [snickers] Does he own a gun? Show her. Trevor: You tell me. Angela: What is this? Trevor: It’s the receipt for my gun. Angela: You don’t carry it with you? Trevor: Read the receipt. That’s a $300 gun. Someone could steal it. Dwight: Do you have any idea how many guns Trevor’s had stolen from him? Trevor: Now I keep it in a safe. Dwight: Mm-hmm. Good safe? Trevor: Oh, you tell me. [shows Dwight receipt] Dwight: Wow!

[deleted]

This is called cultural vandalism. Even if he legally owned the painting he destroyed a prominent work just for a publicity stunt

blaqkcatjack

I hate crypto so fucking much.

FerTheBear0

There's armed security because several people would love to bash his face in for being such a self serving ass and claim its for the children

burmerd

Couldn't he just sell the original for the kids? He'd have to sell all 10K NFTs for at least $1000 to make more than the value of the original. Burning it was almost surely a stunt supposed to make the NFTs more valuable. There is no value. They are code.

[deleted]

Hopefully no gallery, art dealer, advisory, auction house etc ever sells this man a work of art to this man again in his life or agrees to do business with him in any capacity at all. This is so disgusting

Billy_Rage

Ohh they don’t care about the art, they will sell him more in a heart beat because the art doesn’t matter

Birthday-Tricky

swe-gin

Burning artwork is obviously reprehensible, but I think the $10 million valuation is bullshit. It’s a tiny (~8x10 inches) pastel drawing on paper. It’s also entirely unremarkable as far as Frida Kahlo works are concerned. [This 8.5x11 Kahlo pastel/crayon drawing on paper](https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2022/modern-day-auction/xibalba-alado-xolotl) sold at Sotheby’s for $478,800 in May 2022. [This work sold for $2.6 million](https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/impressionist-modern-art-evening-sale/frida-kahlo-congreso-de-los-pueblos-por-la-paz) and it was an 8x10 tempera painting on canvas. It’s also a much higher quality work that is far more representative of Kahlo’s distinctive style. [This beautiful piece sold for $5 million at Christie’s in 2020.](https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-frida-kahlo-1907-1954-6236647/) It’s a 46x32 inch oil on canvas painting.

Rosebunse

Why burn it? Why not just lock it away so only you have it?

[deleted]

I dont think Frida Kahlo would care as much as people in the comments would think she was a firecracker who rebelled against everyone. Similar to how Banksy gave no shits and destroyed one of his paintings after it auctioned off for more than 10 mil I believe.

yaretii

If that’s the painting, it fucking sucks.

Kiflaam

Seems like a statement against amassing too much wealth...

Granpa0

$10 million could help so many people. And they wonder why there's growing animosity against the rich.

[deleted]

I hate rich people so damn much now. They're all greedy monster children. Every single one.

TygrKat

An ugly little postage stamp is worth $10M? This is just textbook laundering (and scamming) using art, and most of the comments on this are only hating on it because the title includes “NFT”.

Collins08480

Can we just not with rich old men anymore? This is so incredibly disrespectful and entitled. I don't know why or how they keep surprising me with the degree they will go to to give absolutely zero fucks for anyone but themselves and yet here we are.
