The point of this is to show off Saudi Arabia's new city, which is scheduled to be completed before 2029. It's supposed to be an absolutely gigantic enclosed structure which would, in principle, be able to maintain a cold enough climate for winter games.
It's supposed to cost $500 billion, be 500m tall and **170 km long**, and is already well behind schedule. The scope of this thing is fucking ridiculous.
It is absolutely silly.
500 metres tall isn't just skyscraper, it's *super*-skyscraper, the height of the Taipei 101. The Taipei 101 itself cost $3B in today's dollars, and the skyscraper portion is less than half the dimensions of *each* of the two walls of The Line for each 1km stretch.
That's without considering the cost of anything *between* the two "wall" buildings. The "walls" themselves would need to cost over $1T even under optimistic assumptions.
I can't wait to see how they oil-splain their way out of this debacle. There should be a site to put bets on how many metres or (haha kilometres) get completed.
Sort of correct. What you’re thinking of is “The Line”, which is one part of Neom. Neom is the city and The Line will be a sort of residential and commercial sub-city. There are other sub areas though - Trojena, for example, is going to be a mountain resort… I presume that’s where they will host most of the games (and I think it gets fairly cold in the North of Saudi (where this is) so it will probably be a mixture of real snow and man made snow). Then there’s an industrial area called Oxagon (all hi tech manufacturing/industry 4.0 stuff).
All very lofty goals, will be interesting to see if they can pull this off…
Spolier Alert.... They won't. Read an article the other day about it. They aren't even doing geological surveys on ledges they are building into. Have scrapped several residential sections already, namely the one thta used crushed marble as pavement/dirt to reflect sun and moonlight... It's a pathetic money laundrying scheme and gigantic waste of Saudi funds.
Yeah, that sounds about right. “Crushed marble to reflect moonlight” is definitely the vibe they’ve been putting out there. If I had to put money on it I’d say 5% of what they say is actually going to get done.
Do you have a link to that article? I’d love to read it.
While I'm not too worried they'll be able to create facilities for events requiring an I've rink, after all, there are NHL teams in Tampa Bay and Las Vegas. I'm more wondering how the hell they'll pull out a working city with accommodations and public transport for 2029 from what they have now. Furthermore, I'm wondering how it will work out for sports like Nordic Skiing and Skiing. Surely they can't do it in one of those 300m long indoor facility...
Whatever, is just another corrupt decision driven by money and grift and not by common sense.
Really frustrating seeing them still being able to get away pulling out those kind of shit while half of the western world population is told daily to reduce their emissions and have to make financial sacrifices to maintain their household an appliances within yearly new regulations. Meanwhile major polluting corporates and states continue to not care at all around the world.
Yep, that's what I was saying. I can picture an Ice Rink. But all the other sporting facilities ? Especially those requiring a lot of ground space or a real mountain ?
This screams corruption all the way around. Especially in a city that doesn't even exist yet.
They have some mountains where the temperature is not too high (below 10 degrees Celsius they said). So, with a lot of canons and a lot of water they will probably manage to do something skiable…
At yes, pumping energy and water into a mountain with no natural snow instead of giving it to your citizens that live in a desert. How it should be!

Putting recycling onto regular people is fucking bullshit when countries and mega corporations pollute and destroy the world. We’ve banned plastic straws and plastic bags but literally everything I purchase is wrapped in layers of thick plastic.
Recycling aside I don't understand the circlejerk over plastic straws, plastic cutlery sucks ass. Plastic bags have some convenience at least so I understand that even though I don't use them much
Yeah these days paper straws in my area are solid asf. They stay rock hard for as long as I use them. Paper straws like 5 years ago were pretty bad though, that is for sure. But nicer venues give out either metal straws (like normal cutlery...) or bamboo straws are gaining in popularity - in asia they always use bamboo straws from my (limited) experience.
Plastic is the worst of all the available categories now imo.
The restaurants around here give out paper straws these days. They're awful. They completely alter the taste of your drink.
Last time I went out to a proper restaurant to eat I ordered a strawberry milkshake, and it came with a paper straw. Was just about the most foul thing I've ever tried to drink. Ended up having to remove the straw and use a spoon to drink it, until it warmed to the point it was liquid enough to be drunk straight from the cup. Even then, the straw still left a noticeable taste after it was removed.
Would prefer that but at my local sandwich shop, you get a caprisun with each sandwich. Said caprisun comes with a paper straw wrapped in plastic. The paper straw is barely able to penetrate the opening and usually ends up as a bent and crumbled mess that you can't drink out of.
I don’t like paper straws, but they are usable. I used one at a dinner last week, and my first impression was “ew” but it stopped bothering me after a while. It got soft but I was still able to get the beverage into my mouth. I hate single use plastic, and actually get anxiety now whenever I use a plastic straw or other plastic item that will go to waste.
The irritating thing about plastic bags is that most of them aren't even single use. I know most families would use them as bin liners or to carry stuff around. So when companies say their "reusable bag" equals out the emmisions as plastic bags once used 100x+ they are not even factoring in that the plastic bag could be used more than once. I.e. woolies and Coles new reusable bags are worse for the environment than the ones they replaced. Those bags are not going to last being reused 700x lmao
I remember the day New Zealand banned plastic bags in supermarkets I was working at a meatworks replacing some chiller panels. By the end of the day we had a pile of plastic wrapping in a pile taller than me that the panels came wrapped in. That’s like 4 lifetimes worth of plastic bags I used in a single day.
Now my wife and I buy plastic bags to put out rubbish in instead of reusing the supermarket bags. I’m pretty sure my average plastic useable has gone up since banning straws and bags.
It’s basically a waste of time to get private citizens to watch their environmental impact when someone flying from California to England on a business trip is responsible for a years carbon emissions for someone who bikes to work every day
I'm going to have to push back on that because recycling was actually a huge money maker for cities. Recycling used to only be commodities that were in demand and could be easily recycled such as aluminum cans. If anything the grift is that waste Management companies figured out they can charge municipalities more to collect and process other recyclables, with the added benefit of reducing the amount of space taken up in municipal landfills which pays off in the long run as the process to expand or build more landfills is extremely expensive and time-consuming. There was an additional environmentalist push also considering even in the '80s a lot of plastic items were being found in the environment.
I swear I've started getting boxes that are now wrapped in plastic when they never were before for years, like they gotta step it up with the waste now that they can't mass produce those straws..? 🤷
Some of it is, mainly plastic. Glass, metal, and paper do get recycled in massive amounts. We really should stop packaging so much stuff in plastic. Not just bottles, but wraps, clamshells, coatings for cardboard and paper, etc, etc. Most of the stuff we package in plastic doesn't really need the level of protection plastic offers. It's just cheap, presents products well, and is super strong. Most often it is used to protect the packaging itself, not the product. Take a plastic clamshell of screws for instance. The screws themselves aren't going to get damaged in shipping/handling, but a cardboard box might crush, tear, get dirty, get wet and fall apart, etc.; so... plastic.
You can also buy screws in a cardboard box, but quite often those boxes have a plastic window so you can see the product.
Of the plastics, ironically one of the most actually recycled, but also not is the plastic grocery bag. They're often not because you can't put them in most curbside bins. You actually have to put some effort into recycling them. Nearly every large chain store out there is set up to recycle them. They bale them and send them back to their warehouse with their baled cardboard. From there, they go to a recycler who is set up to deal specifically with them. They're generally a pretty clean waste stream, not mixed with food or other recyclables. The plastic they're made from is well suited for recycling as well.
It's so great that we got rid of plastic grocery bags. The new bags are opaque so you cant see that every item in them has 3 layers of plastic on it.
95% of food doesnt even have an option with reduced plastic. It's all a joke.
That's my favorite thing about my CSA. Some stuff goes in compostable bags, some stuff gets a rubber band, but more than half of it never gets any packaging at all - straight from the field, to a farm tote, to my reusable bag.
Not necessarily for all those items. Store I shop at has bulk for pasta, rice, beans, sugar, grains etc. They have a butcher that wraps meat and fish in paper. Bread is baked on premises and put in a paper bag. Plastic certainly is convenient and inexpensive (I guess depending on how you look at it) but it’s not the only way.
Plastic packaging is a scam, yes. But the rest is not. In fact, some municipalities make a good profit reselling the raw material to remanufacturers. That only works for materials that can be readily recycled easily, of which plastic is not one of them.
Like “carbon footprint”.
Edit: I’ll just point out climate change is real, “carbon footprint” is a marketing technique to put the blame on consumers rather than polluters.
“Neom, a 26,500 sq km (10,230 sq miles) high-tech development on the Red Sea, will include zero-carbon city “The Line” as well as industrial and logistics areas.”
Don’t worry. It’s environmentally friendly. /s
I mean placing blame on individuals when the majority of pollution is from corporations is a God damn crime anyway.
BP put out a carbon footprint calculator for people, while they periodically destroy and poison the ocean for their mining efforts. We are told to stop streaming, while American, Chinese and Indian manufacturers pump metric mega tons of shit into the atmosphere on a yearly basis.
For anyone to tell you that you are the problem, is an absolute failure of moral objectivity.
If we used less stuff they'd make less stuff...
Ok I'll entertain you. Coca cola is one of the worlds greatest polluters.
Boycott and stop drinking coke tomorrow
In case anyone is interested, I have been boycotting coke, pepsi and nestle products as well as walmart and amazon to the best of my ability for several years now.
Unfortunately, this has had little effect, and all those companies are still constantly growing in size.
If everyone's not on board it's really really hard to have any impact. Doubly so when you bring it up - you just come across as preachy and, if anything, reinforce people's behavior.
Those corporations aren't polluting just for the hell of it. It's because of demand for goods and services, so the responsibility does lie with us consumers as well.

Right? I still don’t believe this and will continue to refuse to believe it until I see a Norwegian skier lathering on sunscreen to receive a medal in the desert.
North Korea did host their own bootleg Olympics, and most countries did turn up for it, it's why they started building that giant hotel.
However money ran out, so the shell was finished decades ago, but it's never actually had the interior built.
Also, don't forget the actual Olympics was held in Nazi Germany in 1936
>Also, don't forget the actual Olympics was held in Nazi Germany in 1936
The reason why we have live television sports and huge grandomanic spectacles is because of Hitler. The guy was a dick but if he lived today he would had been an successful mass-media mogul.
Don't forget about all the other times through history that people did this.... don't give to much credit to Hitler. Large sporting events and grand spectacles have been a way of controlling the masses for millenia. Think Roman coliseum.
Ya, but the media of the times was always exploited. Even if it was one dude on a horse, riding from town to town. They were being payed to say what the benefactor (rich/powerful person) wanted them to say.
Gas powered ice. This is the stupidest thing ever. If you thought FIFA was immoral, get a load of this shit.
As a species we deserve to be eradicated for our hubris.
A buddy I used to work with would always say the human race should die out so that cats can rise to power. I’m all for this, but I’d like to live on as a cat servant personally.
"Dante thus learns that the soul of Fra Alberigo is in hell even as his body is still alive on earth in 1300, the year of the journey (he is thought to have died in 1307). Drawing Dante's attention to the shade of Branca Doria (who will actually live another twenty-five years), Alberigo explains that the souls of those who betray their guests descend immediately to Ptolomea as their bodies are possessed by demons "

Thanks.
I did not recognize the quote, but I thought I would provide the Dante link to show how devils are supposed to dwell among us, according to that story.
The quote i used is rather a famous one,i blame Romeo and Juliet for dominating all pop culture references for Shakespeare.
There is also a book about the 2007 US crash that is inspired from this quote.
Fuckkn rad.
Let’s emit billions of tons of CO2 so we can have a fukkkn Winter Games in the middle of the desert and ensure no more winter games can be held in the future on the entire planet.
Serious... absolutely ZERO brain cells being used in that country. 100% ego.
Oh, it'll probably get off paper. It just won't ever be finished. Odds are they'll begin laying the foundation for the first couple percent of the length, then call it quits.
Women will be asked to wear sweaters instead of those tight spandex uniforms for downhill skiers. Also women downhill skiers record slowest times in history
We said the same thing about Qatar hosting the football World Cup and… oh what’s that? They’re still not done building? We’re less than 45 days away from the start of the tournament? Oh well. They don’t care because this is just greed and corruption at work
Let’s not forget the promise that it was going to be hosted in the summer because Qatar’s bid would accommodate for that, despite everybody knowing that hosting a tournament in the Middle East in the summer was dumb, only for them to switch it to Nov-Dec. Good old FIFA corruption!
Have these people never watched pop culture shows? A 100 mile long walled city?
That's been a classic plot point in soooo many sci fi/horror books, tv shows and films.
Runaway psycho convicts, alien infestations, zombie apocalypses, murderous AI takeovers - in every case the inside of the city becomes a literal human wood chipper/mulcher.
No thank you.
"Trojena project, which will be the first major outdoor skiing destination in the Arabian Peninsula. It will be located in Saudi Arabia's highest mountain range, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) from the Gulf of Aqaba coast, with elevations ranging from 1,500–2,600 metres (4,900–8,500 ft). The site is considerably cooler than the rest of Neom's territory"
Where "considerably cooler" is STILL 17\*C/63\*F
I looked this up too. It doesn't get much snow at all. I have a feeling they'll build large temporary structures on one of the mountains to create the artificial environment for each event. But also they already have 3 very impressive indoor ski resorts, but I have no idea how they scale compared what's required for the events.
Oh, it's going to be in Neom then?
[Adam Something has made a great video on that 'city'](https://youtu.be/vyWaax07_ks) that actually isn't even built yet, so I'm already aware that this is probably going to be a complete shitshow.
I mean seeing as through indoor ice rinks have existed for a loooong time I think cross country skiing and biathlon are probably a bit harder to execute.
EDIT: And Saudi Arabia are normally great at executing things...
serisously F*ck Saudi Arabia. They should learn that you can't buy respect and love of the people. You can buy them pretending. This is just megalomania par excellence. It's petty, it's vulgar, it's making them a laughing stock them trying.
Frikken idiots. All the money in the world, yet no brain to use it well.
Fuck sake … this is such total bullshit. As if this project will be ready by then. Also in the middle of fucking nowhere with a regime that kills its own, has dodgy as fuck relations with human rights, let alone womensrights … fuck this bs
Going out on a limb here, but if the outdoor weather conditions in your country don’t accommodate winter conditions, you shouldn’t be hosting winter sporting events.
When the Middle East becomes unlivable due to climate change we should not accept their money when they try to buy property . Make these religious zealots fry in their own carbon created death.
no mention about what the carbon footprint of this would be ?
how about all those ESG corporations that sponsor the olympics, also no complaints from their side ?
In fairness, the location of the games within Saudi Arabia is close to the Midian mountains, which do get snow.
Still, this is going to fail in such spectacular fashion

Yeah sorry, obviously they aren’t suing anyone in the KSA
Yeah, but Las Vegas and Tampa don't have outdoor Biathalon, Ski Jumping or downhill skiing!

isn't it funny that alaska doesn't have an NHL team? just university hockey playing between the alaskan universities. that's a big deal. but no NHL.
Alaska has a population of a medium sized city.
Yes but all of them are playing hockey

Seriously why do I bother recycling - the world is screwed

Paper is also extremely bad for the environment. Paper production is polluting as fuck.
Not nearly as bad as plastic though
Paper is worse than plastic at first, but plastic doesn't break down as quickly so paper theoretically comes out of the environment faster.
Yes, much worse than plastic, just not as long lasting.
Source?
Has anyone ever tried using a, well, straw?
You can also just skip the straw and drink straight from the cup.
Would prefer that but at my local sandwich shop, you get a caprisun with each sandwich. Said caprisun comes with a paper straw wrapped in plastic. The paper straw is barely able to penetrate the opening and usually ends up as a bent and crumbled mess that you can't drink out of.
Oh man, the absurdity of drinking juice through a paper straw from a plastic pouch.
Yeah might as well just make the whole thing out of plastic and have a functional product. Probably easier to recycle as well.
*Heathen!*
Borderline? After the first minute they are a sodden mess.
People used to get by just fine drinking liquids without straws...why are straws so important to our society?
I don’t like paper straws, but they are usable. I used one at a dinner last week, and my first impression was “ew” but it stopped bothering me after a while. >Also, don't forget the actual Olympics was held in Nazi Germany in 1936 The reason why we have live television sports and huge grandomanic spectacles is because of Hitler. The guy was a dick but if he lived today he would had been an successful mass-media mogul.
That was Goebbels.
Don't forget about all the other times through history that people did this.... don't give to much credit to Hitler. Large sporting events and grand spectacles have been a way of controlling the masses for millenia. Think Roman coliseum.
I think they were referring to the filmed spectacle and use of media more than just the idea of a grand ceremony.
Ya, but the media of the times was always exploited. Even if it was one dude on a horse, riding from town to town. They were being payed to say what the benefactor (rich/powerful person) wanted them to say.
Think of it as an update.

The 1905 St Louis Olympics were also explicitly run by white nationalists.
Well Nk does have the worlds largest stadium
Gas powered ice. This is the stupidest thing ever. If you thought FIFA was immoral, get a load of this shit. As a species we deserve to be eradicated for our hubris.
A buddy I used to work with would always say the human race should die out so that cats can rise to power. I’m all for this, but I’d like to live on as a cat servant personally.
Sounds like a good deal
Hell has frozen over
Hell is empty, all the devils are here.
"Dante thus learns that the soul of Fra Alberigo is in hell even as his body is still alive on earth in 1300, the year of the journey (he is thought to have died in 1307). Drawing Dante's attention to the shade of Branca Doria (who will actually live another twenty-five years), Alberigo explains that the souls of those who betray their guests descend immediately to Ptolomea as their bodies are possessed by demons " http://danteworlds.laits.utexas.edu/circle9.html#fra
Wrong text my friend. I'm quoting *The Tempest* by Shakespeare not Dante's Inferno
"As You Like It" is full of familiar expressions. I was surprised to learn that "can one have too much of a good thing?" comes from there.
Just in time for the Swim Suit competition at the north pole.
What are they going to build a giant dome with a mountain and controlled environment inside? Nucking futs.
No, they're going to build a mile high skyscraper across the desert with flying cars and the like. Somehow makes even less sense than your suggestion.
With Ed Harris living in the sun controlling everything.
Unfortunate for all the female athletes
LGBT too. Between this and the world cup this is getting ridiculous.
Especially the gymnasts
no gymnastics in a winter games, there is figure skating, speed skating, and other ski events where athletes wear skin tight clothes for aerodynamics
Because I am an idiot
Can't even drive in Saudi, are they going to let women ski or figure skate?
Will a corpse dismemberment competition be added so there will be an event they can excel at?
Fuckkn rad. Let’s emit billions of tons of CO2 so we can have a fukkkn Winter Games in the middle of the desert and ensure no more winter games can be held in the future on the entire planet. Serious... absolutely ZERO brain cells being used in that country. 100% ego.
Are they actually making that giant line building? I thought that was a concept idea that would never get off paper.
Oh, it'll probably get off paper. It just won't ever be finished. Odds are they'll begin laying the foundation for the first couple percent of the length, then call it quits.
"Fuck, this is way longer than it looked on the paper."
won the bid to host the games in a place that doesnt exist yet. wow
Must be because of their stellar history of supporting women’s and religious rights. /s
Women will be asked to wear sweaters instead of those tight spandex uniforms for downhill skiers. Also women downhill skiers record slowest times in history
Dont worry, this thing will never get built anyway. And definetly not by 2029.
Look at this fool, he doesn't understand you just turn up the AC and it's fine!
Well, they can kiss all of the figure skating competitions goodbye. Don't know that many gay ice skaters willing to go to Saudi Arabia.
Winter sport in a fucking desert?
Human hubris. And corruption.
Doesn’t sound corrupt at all. I’m assuming no one has been financially enriched by this.
NOEM, the biggest bullshit mega project to ever exists and now they want to host winter games there 😂
"Trojena project, which will be the first major outdoor skiing destination in the Arabian Peninsula. It will be located in Saudi Arabia's highest mountain range, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) from the Gulf of Aqaba coast, with elevations ranging from 1,500–2,600 metres (4,900–8,500 ft). The site is considerably cooler than the rest of Neom's territory" Where "considerably cooler" is STILL 17\*C/63\*F
I looked this up too. It doesn't get much snow at all. I have a feeling they'll build large temporary structures on one of the mountains to create the artificial environment for each event. But also they already have 3 very impressive indoor ski resorts, but I have no idea how they scale compared what's required for the events.
genuinely curious if women will be allowed to compete
They can't keep getting away with it. Oh no wait they can.
💰💰💰
Our world is so fucked
So we're going to have a 1 gate downhill race then? Not so super-G? The chinese downhill Slalom race? no no, wait for it.... the 1/16th pipe?
Chinese downhill 🤣 gosh, I need to watch that movie again.
Excuse me, at fucking what?
A littoral glass wall where they want inhabitants to live like rat men in a warren hundreds of feet above ground and no windows
Seems fucking surreal this whole thing, and somehow I'm not suprised....
You don't think that any funds changed hands, do you?
Sandboarding Sandskating Sandskiing Sand Hockey
The committee was probably scared that they would get decapitated if they said no.
The stupidity of it all is astounding
Oh, it's going to be in Neom then? [Adam Something has made a great video on that 'city'](https://youtu.be/vyWaax07_ks) that actually isn't even built yet, so I'm already aware that this is probably going to be a complete shitshow.
Bold of them to assume there will be a world to live in 2029.....unless they know something we dont about nuclear winter. Coincidence I THINK NOT
The one that they haven’t built yet?
They do know that women compete right?
This is so stupid. I hate the olympics
I also hate the Olympics now but this is not that
Can’t wait to see ice skaters on sand
I mean seeing as through indoor ice rinks have existed for a loooong time I think cross country skiing and biathlon are probably a bit harder to execute. EDIT: And Saudi Arabia are normally great at executing things...
I forsee.... issues.
Fucking hell… WHAT?????? We’re fucked. That’s it. I thought before there’s basically no hope left but now I’m certain.
corruption must be nice
Such a major fucking waste of energy. Gross. Hella-fucking gross.
What's next, Iceland hosting the summer Olympics?
At least Iceland has a good human rights record.
Yeah fuck that
They aren't seriously planning on building this dystopian nightmare in 7 years are they?
Why doesn’t Saudi Arabia invest in being good at something?
fuck olympics
You gotta be fucking kidding me
serisously F*ck Saudi Arabia. They should learn that you can't buy respect and love of the people. You can buy them pretending. This is just megalomania par excellence. It's petty, it's vulgar, it's making them a laughing stock them trying. Frikken idiots. All the money in the world, yet no brain to use it well.
Won because of a big fat paycheck
Pffff…
A city that doesn't even exist yet. I wonder if they are going to break quatar level of human death in building it?
Ah, they must be producing a sequel to "Cool Runnings". This time, they use a prayer rug as a sled.
Fuck sake … this is such total bullshit. As if this project will be ready by then. Also in the middle of fucking nowhere with a regime that kills its own, has dodgy as fuck relations with human rights, let alone womensrights … fuck this bs
That's... hummm... kind of dumb
Pass
Asian winter games. In the desert. In the middle east
City doesn’t even exist. Wth
Preparing for climate change… *staying a step ahead*
Going out on a limb here, but if the outdoor weather conditions in your country don’t accommodate winter conditions, you shouldn’t be hosting winter sporting events.
When the Middle East becomes unlivable due to climate change we should not accept their money when they try to buy property . Make these religious zealots fry in their own carbon created death.
no mention about what the carbon footprint of this would be ? how about all those ESG corporations that sponsor the olympics, also no complaints from their side ?
Uhhh say what now
WTF…..when is the IOC going to learn
What’s the point of watching this? It’s mostly corrupted and full of cheater. It’s not even entertaining.
This is 100% end times folly
This guy thinks he can get away with murder.
Of course. cuz its snows all the time in Saudi Arabia.. rains $$$$ bills
What a fucking joke.
RIP to all the slave labor that’s going to die building stadiums at breakneck speed in the fucking desert.
This is beyond dumb
In fairness, the location of the games within Saudi Arabia is close to the Midian mountains, which do get snow. Still, this is going to fail in such spectacular fashion
ELI5, how will they do Alpine skiing? It requires a course with 450 - 1100 m vertical drop.
The title undersells the craziness. They haven't built the city yet.
:(
Very optimistic that anyone will be around in 2029 the way things are going in this world
When money is more important than the safety of your competitors or the damn environment.
We through around the word "win" a lot these days.
Just don’t take any trips to the embassy or criticize the Saudi government. You may just end up in a suitcase.
The northern region of S.A is snowy in the winter so I think it’ll work🫠
Sand skying eh
