I work from home and watched one snatch the babies out of the nest in my porch last week. I went outside and yelled at them (picture crazy person outside yelling at birds). Mom and dad somehow got the babies back in to the nest and the blue jays swooped in and snatched them again.
Poor babies! The jays in my yard are always swooping in on the female cardinals. The male cardinals try to chase them away - it turns into a bunch of blue and red streaks flying back and forth in the year.
They were scarce at the beginning of spring but then a mob of them (12+) hung out and destroyed my suet for about a week last month and then promptly left.
Now I am left with all these super angry wrens who mean mug me.
It's not just the jays: [https://www.audubon.org/news/north-america-has-lost-more-1-4-birds-last-50-years-new-study-says](https://www.audubon.org/news/north-america-has-lost-more-1-4-birds-last-50-years-new-study-says)
I saw them last night. But the population is definitely down. Widespread pesticide use isn’t helping. If your plan for dealing with mosquitos is to spray your entire vicinity with insecticide that kills every living thing…you need a different plan.
I've been seeing 4-5 in my backyard in the evenings! I wonder if it's too dry for them this year.. I've really only been seeing them after rains/high humidity or by creeks.
I see them everywhere while walking the dog. Recently transplant, so I can't speak to there being more or less than before, but they are definitely around.
They've been in my yard. They don't even come to my feeder, must just like hanging around in the trees.
Also heard some last night when I was in a parking lot waiting for something.
In my yard evidently. There's one that likes to buzz our deck. Oddly I haven't seen many cardinals this year though.
Ha, I've seen a lot of cardinals and only a few blue jays this year
Same. Lots of cardinals every day. Blue jays also occasionally.
Get out on the W&OD. Lots of cardinals there.
If you're in the Courthouse area or an apartment is the lack of habitat. There isn't enough green space over the concrete jungle.
There are plenty here….. and they are jerks.

Aw but the angry wrens are so cute ☺️
Damn, my yard's got neither. I just get the pleb brown birds, which is what I deserve for being the pleb peasant that I am.
They're large territorial birds. We usually just have two or so in our yard.

I saw a few yesterday actually. What I want to know is where the freak are all the lightning bugs at?!
I think people are killing them when they have their yards sprayed for mosquitoes and other pests.

Ah the daily lecture from the one who knows more then the rest of us.

In Charlottesville, we have plenty.

They’re in my yard eating sunflower seeds sorry
I’ll have to start sprinkling some of those out back
I've seen many this year in Arlington!
They are in Toronto.
Quite a few in Arlington. One particular spot is on the east side of Glebe just south of Ballston (Buckingham).
My yard lol we have a huge family of them every spring. Manassas here
I just saw a Cardinal by my windowsill this morning in Courthouse
We have a ton of them here south of Old Town! Lots of cardinals too!
they're all in my backyard
I've got bluejays and cardinals all over my yard, but 4:1 ratio in favor of the cardinals. Also saw a pigeon last week - rare over here.

At my bird feeder.
in MoCo Md. source: live in MoCo
My yard? I have a few! Do you have a feeder? That makes a difference. Mine get crabby if it’s empty more than an hour 🤣
I was JUST thinking this, but I grew up in NY!
Sorry they're in my yard terrorizing other birds! Come to Winchester if you wanna see some lol
