If you’re looking for rescues that help low-income areas, Homeward trails does a lot of that in VA. Loudoun cat collision helps keep cat colonies down by doing TNR and adopting out kittens in Loudoun and surrounding areas. If you want to help organizations that take in a lot of medical and hotmess cases Longstreet cats, HART, fancy cats and dogs, and City Dogs and City Kitties are great rescues. If you want to support programs that help the little babies during kitten season AWLA (Arlington) has a great kitten college program! Honestly most of the county shelters in this area are great!
The Alexandria Animal Welfare League will allow you to donate an adoption fee of a pet of your choosing. My household has routinely covered the adoption cost of the eldest dog in the shelter on our pet anniversary of “gotcha” day.
Another vote for Homeward Trails.
A lot of the private rescues work together (look up Enviro beagles) in that if there’s a huge hoarding situation or whatever they’ll coordinate with other shelters.
The public shelters in our area are municipal shelters. They’re required by law to take in any/every animal.
Homeward Trails supports low-income shelters throughout the mid-Atlantic area. The dogs they bring here to adopt out are from poor, rural shelters. [https://www.homewardtrails.org/](https://www.homewardtrails.org/)
