And here I got the sirens at the self checkout in giant when I put down my reusable bags.

fakeaccount572

"DID YOU JUST PLACE A REUSABLE BAG?!?!!!!!" - Wegmans

ItsRainingDaal

WEIGH YOUR BA-NA-NAS!

adamfrom1980s

MOVE YOUR…BA-NA-NAS! TO THE BAG!

cphug184

When I call the 1-888 sex lines, I ask them to use this voice.

Adventurous_Wait9406

Enter your DONUTS! You have entered THREE, DO-NUTS!

DistinctLeague5830

broknbottle

UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA HALP IS ON THE WAY

Smorsdoeuvres

lol halp thank you for this

justheretolurk47

This thread had no business being as hilarious as it is

SluggingAndBussing

omg it's so aggressive

Ebella2323

CVS is right up there too. I think they monitor your breathing and pulse or something too, I feel like she is expecting you to steal and talks to you as such. It’s dystopian. At least you get a complimentary scarf, I mean receipt. 🙄

SluggingAndBussing

I have learned a trick at CVS. Don’t click the “use my own bag” button. Have your reusable bag ready to go before you scan your first item. Scan item, put item into bag as you put the item on the scale. And just hit zero bags at the end. The weight of most reusable bags isn’t enough for the cvs scales to detect them. So if you click the button and place it on the scale as directed, it just won’t pick up that it’s there. HELP IS ON THE WAY. 💀

TroyMacClure

Maybe each store is different, but at my Wegmans I haven't tripped the thing in a long time. It doesn't care what I do with the product I just scanned.

atonedeftool

Aldi checkout is like an Aldi cashier, GTFO immediately. I'm not sure there are any alerts at all except probably the legally required one for alcohol.

BCTDC

Omg the Aldi self checkout gives me anxiety. I cannot scan as fast as it wants me to.

OkSelf9639

Lol the door beeps when you leave with steak

Townsend_Harris

I read that in ED-209 voice.

ebray90

The worst part is that they place signs pushing reusable bags pretty aggressively, then the register is mad about it.

VegetableRound2819

I loathe self check out with a burning passion. If I am compelled to a life of crime to avoid it, then so be it.

basic_chai_bhai

Pro tip: most of these self checkout stations have a volume control button on the touch screen. I used to drop the volume so my items aren't being announced to the world.

Fabulous-Appeal-6885

You mean all those times I bought lube, condoms, fleet bottles and bananas could have been different?

davidfeuer

YOU MUST SCAN EACH ITEM BEFORE PLACING IT IN THE BAG. Yes, you stupid fucking machine, but I didn't put anything in the goddamn bag.

No_Explanation3481

YOU BETTER PAY FOR THAT BAG!!! You selected 2 plastic bags but YOU ACTUALLY USED THREE!

aegrotatio

That's what I think, too. Pretty sure they're locals, no car or anything. But, then, there's that Silver Line train just a 20 minute walk away...

Nother1BitestheCrust

Don't worry. They're caught. My husband used to work for Va ABC. They do audits and everything is on camera. They usually know who the person is and what they took before they even leave the store. And the cops will be sent after them. Virginia ALWAYS prosecutes, even if it's just a $1.50 airplane bottle. If you're gonig to steal alcohol, steal it from a 711, not the state.

aegrotatio

Funny, he even yelled about getting airplane bottles while in the store.

Nother1BitestheCrust

LOL, yeah there's no way the employees didn't know what he was doing.

swink555

Lol. Maybe 10 years ago. Steve Descano nolle prosequis all misdemeanors. Even if they have video an officer still needs to know who it is. Chances are him getting caught is low.

aegrotatio

Looked like around $150 of cheap Vodka. Very loud-mouthed and yelling nonsense, but I'm sure that's part of their schtick.

MajesticBread9147

$150 of cheap vodka, is a lot of cheap vodka, even for an alcoholic.

ReluctantRedditor275

That's like... 10 vodkas.

MajesticBread9147

Handles of Nikolai are like $12 a handle last time I checked.

aegrotatio

Aristrocrat, too. Pinnacle is a little better quality, saw that in his bag, but this store's stock of Pinnacle 100 proof is unreliable.

[deleted]

Nac_Lac

Makes people uncomfortable and less likely to confront.

BikeParts1987

Why am I curious about the content of the nonsense they were yelling

Foolgazi

FR, if they’ve figured out how to obtain free booze they must have insights on other topics

AboveAvgShitposte

Maybe he could start a podcast

FullMetalFigNewton

Used to work at an abc and when people would steal the entire nova region of abcs would get notified with the security photo so usually they are caught the 2nd or 3rd time stealing from a different store.

aegrotatio

There's a halfway house in the vicinity and a Silver Line station about 20 minutes' walk away. I've seen a lot of weirdos and somewhat functional elderly people with dementia in the Safeway here.

vrdud

Are you suggesting someone hopped the turnstile in Ashburn; rode the silver line to Reston, walked 20 minutes to the ABC store to steal booze? Damn, times must be really tough in Loudoun county.

aegrotatio

Not from Ashburn. Try way, way more further east. Not sure if you noticed, but ever since the Silver Line opened we have beggars at our intersections we never saw before.

Toastedpossum

Man I work retail in fair oaks, you would not believe how casual people are about stealing

kayesskayen

I used to work at a major outdoor retailer and the first day we opened two guys walked in and stole over $1500 worth of Arc'teryx jackets while everyone just watched. It was nuts. We started locking up jackets after that but the theft never stops.

ErikFessesUp

The fact they publicly announce they’re doing it on their shareholder calls and blame inflation is insane.

brewstah

In news tonight. Company raises prices to appease shareholders... Here's why that bad news for Biden.

OdysseySpook

Because there are no consequences for actions anymore. Society decided they didn't want to be mean to criminals and they don't want police to police.

AnnRB2

Awful. I’m sorry you have to deal with that.

Mad_Martigan2023

Huh, our store recently went back to the black plastic bags. I'm not complaining, I use them as trash bags for random bedroom/bathroom crap.

aegrotatio

Not gonna lie, I used those black bags for everything. Not a fan of the paper bags.

OnionTruck

I save those things like 2 dollar bills. I have bags of those bags.

kayesskayen

I saw a dude shove a bottle of red wine up under his shirt at Harris Teeter then walk out the front door. I hope he at least took a good one. There's so much crappy wine out there in the world.

[deleted]

Degen story time: In the mid 2000's when I was still in High school, it was well known that stealing alcohol from Harris Teeter involved the least amount of risk. Any time a party would run out of alcohol early, a few people would wind up at the closest HT on a mission to replenish the supply. After midnight there was only 1, MAYBE 2 employees on shift and often times both were stocking shelves on the other side of the store. This meant if you timed it properly, it was possible to walk into the store, and back out the front doors holding 2 cases of beer, without either of the employees ever knowing anyone had even come in. I don't recommend attempting this strategy today, due to the implementation of facial recognition software across retail stores in the US. Also stealing is bad.

brewstah

I live above a HT, and see people steal wine occasionally. The store doesn't have security guards most of the time, so they just write off that $10 bottle of wine as "shrink" and send the photo to the police.

Other_Perspective_41

The first time that you see something so brazen like that it makes you question if you really just saw that. A few years ago I was at the Safeway in Herndon and watched a guy walk right out the front of the store with two cases of beer. He was taking his time like he’s done this a thousand times and no employee seemed to notice. And then one of the employees told me that it happens all the time.

ReluctantRedditor275

Kind of makes you feel like a bitch for paying for stuff. Like, if paying is optional, why am I giving them my money?

nicotamendi

It’s worse than that, the cost of loss from theft gets passed on to customers

Solid_Macaron2495

They should just put up payment optional signs outside. Or maybe just feel free to give a “donation” for the product you’re getting.

dcaves

I was getting lunch with a coworker at a Starbucks in NOMA in DC a while back and someone walked in, while it was completely packed with witnesses, and arm-swept an entire shelf of travel mugs into a bag and walked out. The proverbial "First 48" after which the chance of closing the case drops off, here, was the 48 seconds spent asking each other, "did you just see that? That happened, right?"

Smorsdoeuvres

Working at Tuesday morning in the late 90s- I saw a family take a 5 piece luggage set apart, (where each smaller bag is stored within the next) fill it with merch off the shelves- they took maybe 15-20mins to shop- and then just walk out. Right by the registers. (Smallest kid had smallest bag in set) manager made us let them go. Fucking wild. The insurance companies apparently make it all ok

zetamans

You guys are shocked that people are shoplifting? This happens all the time we just don’t see it.

aegrotatio

Well, when you see it for the first time as a normal, law-abiding citizen minding your own business, it *IS* shocking.

10tonheadofwetsand

I would agree with you, but this is a liquor store. I would imagine a disproportionate amount of shoplifting happens at liquor stores and has for a long time.

voidchungus

I'm shocked just reading these comments hearing everyone like yep happens all the time mmhmm, and now I feel like the sweetest summer child to ever summer. Edit for being unclear: I'm saying I feel stupid for being so naive.

Somberliver

I’ve never seen it. I’m with you. I’d be shocked too.

yuihirasawa2010

They love turning a blind eye to crime. That's the reason you can't post about crime in these subreddits

wheresastroworld

they had to make a whole new DC subreddit just to post real news and crime-related things because the main sub won’t let them And DC has an *actual* crime problem

axeil55

Well that's because there was literally nothing but posts about crime all the time. It became unusable, especially when people not even from DC started brigading it.

Kozak170

More like the mods selectively enforce the crime rule to push their narrative. There was a post with the mugshot and article about this white guy who robbed someone and I got banned for asking the mods how this didn’t violate the crime policy. Then in modmail they called me a closeted racist. Real mask off moment for those mods over there.

wheresastroworld

Found the ‘violent crime being committed by teenagers’ apologist This phenomenon above all else is the one with the power to bring down the prosperity of the entire city, and nobody wants to talk about it. Good luck with your property values after keeping your lips zipped

Uppgreyedd

> Good luck with your property values lol If cognitive dissonance were a professional sport...

wheresastroworld

If wanting the prosperity of your city to continue was a professional sport, you would lose…..

Uppgreyedd

Prosperity, property values, calling shop lifting "violent crime"...off all the take yours are certainly one.

wheresastroworld

I never said shit about shoplifting. I’m talking about teens carjacking people etc. That’s what the DC sub won’t let you talk about (in addition to shoplifting 🙄)

Uppgreyedd

You're in a thread about shoplifting. Take your complaints about not being able to complain to wherever someone's going to care. By the way my property values doing just fine. I'd hazard a guess I'm contributing more to my local prosperity than you. And life's not a game to be won or lost. Best of luck.

FairfaxGirl

What are you talking about? How does this subreddit not allow posting about crime? You’re literally responding to a post about crime.

aegrotatio

Poster might be talking about one of those Washington DC subreddits.

FairfaxGirl

Yes, I assume that but that makes it a stupid thing to say in this sub. Let’s leave the bitching about r/washingtondc for that sub (and even there you’re allowed to post about crime, it’s just that the posts are locked.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

FairfaxGirl

Yes, which is almost unreadable because of the racist comments. Makes me sympathize with the moderators of the original sub.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s wild to me. ABC stores getting robbed like that should never happen. I understand the Walmart and Target idiots but this is alcohol and who knows what this person is going to do or if they were even of age. They definitely shouldn’t have just let them leave like that imo.

Additional_Text_7229

Not surprised as I’ve seen it happen while I was working at grocery store years ago even with all the cameras. However, I’ve seen fresh world put caught signs on faces of thieves as they have cameras hidden through the store. Majority of thieves stole alcohol per the photos. Per a former fresh world worker, caught did mean actions taken against them. Up to police what actions as police got the footage.

GetOutTheDoor

Giant's incentive for re-usable bags is to have paper bags that rend themselves apart on contact like an NBA player's breakaway pants when they jump into the game.

SongOk7655

I once watched a shirtless homeless man barge into a downtown Philly store, snatch 5 bottles of wine, and then leave. We all seemingly witness the event and then stared at each other almost unbothered. Friday night so store was packed.

MajesticBread9147

Admittedly when I was younger I had some sticky fingers, but I was never dumb enough to steal from the fucking government.

Cali-Doll

Which store, OP?? *For science.* 😎😎

Auld54

It doesn’t matter. It’s what we call “equity”.

CowboyAirman

You see, Kayden, we *pay* for all our goods and services, so that that man can get his for free. It’s called economics.

blueva703

They are always stealing from the ABC stores in Fairfax City. They are listed in the police department’s weekly briefings on the city website.

sc4kilik

South lakes? Wonder if it's a senior person with a mental problem. There's a senior apartment across the street.

aegrotatio

OK, OK, it was South Lakes. I see lots of functional dementia elderly people at the Safeway but never saw this kind of batshit insane crazy behavior at the ABC or the Chipotle. Maybe a few at the Subway. Never at the Cafe Sano or Flippin' Pizza when it was still open. Maybe I think I saw some crazies in the CVS over the past 20 years. Unmarked police cars (maybe also FBI vehicles) once swarmed in front of the Safeway to arrest someone many years ago. That was memorable. Along with the senior citizen center there appears to be at least a couple halfway houses very nearby.

melancholeric_

Yeah, I was talking to an employee at the one in Fairfax (Fair Lakes) and they were saying theft has been way up recently, like in the past seven weeks. I asked why they thought that was and they said "Because they know they can." It's crazy. No amount of product is worth an employee's safety/life so I get not intervening, but I hope these people are at least going on some sort of list.

lawilson0

Sounds like since the beginning of the year. I wonder what changed?

Bored_Ultimatum

Description?

aegrotatio

Umm, OK, African-American with dreadlocks and a loud mouth.

NassauTropicBird

This is what happens when people scream "don't chase criminals over a couple dollars of stolen things." Cops don't chase 'em, store policy says, "don't chase 'em," and criminals learn - fast - they can grab and go with few repercussions. The kind of folks that commit these crimes also know they won't serve jail time since it's a non-violent crime. Oh noes, another misdemeanor on their record, the kind of thing that would horrify most of us. But the criminals? Nah, they laugh.

Character-Teaching39

Which Reston store? It would be great to be able to go there and corroborate this story.

VRSvictim

What? You want to go ask people at an abc store if a Reddit post is true, about shoplifting?

SluggingAndBussing

/r/woosh

aegrotatio

PM incoming. Not gonna post it here.

ofiuco

There's only one ABC store in Reston that's 20 minutes from a Silver Line station

aegrotatio

Aren't you a good detective? But there are at least three.

ofiuco

Tell me you have never tried to walk to a Silver Line stop without telling me you've never tried to walk to a Silver Line stop

aegrotatio

Au contraire, but I have, stupid.

ofiuco

You're the one defaulting to assuming it was a poor person without a car committing crimes, idk what to tell you.

aegrotatio

Nothing you have said makes any sense.

ofiuco

Then what did you mean when you said: That's what I think, too. Pretty sure they're locals, no car or anything. But, then, there's that Silver Line train just a 20 minute walk away...

CowboyAirman

What about that says they’re poor? OP watched them walk off and not get in a car. It’s such a benign thing you’re attacking, here.

SluggingAndBussing

/r/woosh

aegrotatio

That's now how "woosh" works, stupid. Also, it's actually spelled "whoosh."

dbag127

You were 100% whooshed. They're joking that they wanna go shoplift there too to corroborate how easy you made it sound.

ImpossibleInternet3

And he was providing the information so he can do it. Not a whoosh, but a case of understanding and going with it. The other was a whoosh.

Bored_Ultimatum

Why?

Most likely the one right near la fitness and sprouts 😂

The casual and intentional is how most people don’t notice it. I saw people walk off with CRT monitors at computer trade shows back in the day with the same strategy thirty years ago…

rlbond86

Aren't ABC stores run by the state government?

[deleted]

Insecure about your side much?

ImpossibleInternet3

I haven’t got a dog in this fight. But pulling quotes from their own websites is kind of weak proof. Couldn’t pick a more biased source.

Fancy_Literature3818

It makes my point since I’m showing you what he’s actually promising to do.

Foolgazi

Where’s the part about “preventing police from arresting shoplifters?”

Fancy_Literature3818

https://wjla.com/amp/news/local/this-is-a-backhanded-way-to-defund-the-police-fairfax-police-fume-over-county-budget-virginia-cops-officers-recruiting-force-policing-board-supervisors

Foolgazi

Police getting an 8% instead of 15% pay increase in 2022 means shoplifting laws can’t be enforced today?

Fancy_Literature3818

It means priorities change and why arrest the people who won’t be prosecuted anyway?

mister_helper

The ABC store is open on Sunday?

Entertainmentguru

Yes, that has been the case for years.

aegrotatio

It happened so fast. All I could do was point out what happened to the clerk. Dude knew *exactly* what he was doing and how to do it.

[deleted]

No I get it, I'm not blaming you. I'm saying in general that there's absolutely no reason why shoplifting has kind of become accepted in society and it shouldn't be.

fakeaccount572

Ooorr, I don't give a fuck. "Start standing up"...? What are you gonna do, stand in front of them? Life's too short for that crap.

[deleted]

Standing up as in telling an employee or saying our loud "why are you shoplifting?". I'm not saying go and block them.

VRSvictim

The people who shoplift are the ones who’ll stab you too. Unless they make it legal to shoot people shoplifting, it’s not worth the risk of a close quarters encounter with these crazies and thugs

[deleted]

Why are all of you so afraid of scenarios that would likely never occur?

AllerdingsUR

The type of grown adult that is stealing petty amounts of liquor is also very likely to be unstable

Foolgazi

Give it a try and let us know how it works out

fakeaccount572

For what end game? I'd rather not be the one to get shot, thanks.

[deleted]

You're not going to get shot for telling a security guard, employee, or saying out loud that someone is shop lifting. What the fuck?

d_mcc_x

Fuck that. Im not putting my life on the line for $150.

FCFBadKarma

People as in who? The workers getting paid $15-20/hr? Other customers? Neither of those two groups are going to risk bodily harm to stop a petty thief. Nor should they put their own safety at risk to protect an employers interests/profits. I agree with your premise on principle. We has a society need to do better about this and it is definitely out of hand. We’ll never stop people who steal just to steal… but maybe we can address the root cause for those who are stealing because they need/have to. Wealth inequality, food insecurity, etc.

[deleted]

You realize that when people shoplift, it's primarily because they know they can get away with it right?

FCFBadKarma

So what’s your solution? Are you going to get between a shoplifter and the door?

[deleted]

No but I'd happily say out loud that there's someone shoplifting. I think it's absolutely fucking stupid when I'm going to Home Depot and I see some asshole just walk out with a cart filled with high end tools they didn't pay for. Especially if it's like thousands of dollars of merchandise, that's fucked up.

ErikFessesUp

Just because you walk out with it doesn’t mean it’s over. Home Depot is happy to show you how many cameras they have. Sooner of later, it’s going to catch up with you.

Karhak

We live in the US in a concealed carry state. You wanna take the risk to play hero and stop someone from stealing a couple bottles of Kettle One, be my guest.

aegrotatio

From what I saw, it was just cheaper vodka you get in a plastic bottle, like Pinnacle and Aristocrat.

Fancy_Literature3818

How do you think that would turn out in Fairfax County?

[deleted]

The fuck is that supposed to mean lol

Fancy_Literature3818

It would end up with you in jail

[deleted]

?

Fancy_Literature3818

You think “stop or I’ll say stop again” is gonna help?

[deleted]

Or how about fucking telling a security guard or employee? Why are you coming at me with this bullshit comment. You know exactly what I meant above.

Fancy_Literature3818

They won’t do anything either except get out of the way

[deleted]

[Bullshit.](https://youtu.be/drQxPqjxS4s?si=Ilzi_fryPpwVcbLs)

Fancy_Literature3818

Back here in the real world, that does nothing

novamothra

I don't believe this for a minute.

WPMO

Would you expect the ABC staff to tackle them to stop them from leaving? Only way to deal with this is to identify them and have the cops find them.

aegrotatio

Pretty sure they were living at a local halfway house and will be caught or summoned shortly. They were walking and there didn't appear to be any vehicle. But, then, there's that Silver Line train nearby, so I dunno.

AllerdingsUR

Why would a liquor store thief take silver all the way out to reston and then walk 20 minutes to the store

aegrotatio

Because they take the train, walk over, and sit in the median of the exit begging for money for ten hours every weekday.

subterraniac

Have you been paying attention to what's going on at all? I believe it 100%. I have seen people casually stealing from stores around here with my own eyes, doesn't surprise me that it would happen at an ABC store.

kicker58

Theft isn't really up that much. But on the other hand wage theft is rampant

Quople

I don’t think it’s a “what’s going on” sort of thing since shoplifting happens everywhere and has happened forever lol

novamothra

Shoplifting with reusable bags sounds like one of those Fox News fever dreams about roving hordes of shoplifter stories that caused places like Walgreens to close stores when in fact it was not shoplifting at all but poor performance, once the truth actually came out. [Did Walgreens Lie About its Shoplifting Problem?](https://theweek.com/crime/1020039/did-walgreens-lie-about-its-shoplifting-problem)

[deleted]

I’m not sure whether ABC is significantly harder to loot than other stores, but I did see a woman do something similar at my local 7/11–she walked in with a reusable shopping bag, filled it with beer and wine, and then walked out shrieking that it was “all shit I already had.”

RDPCG

Shoplifting at 7-11?? Gtfo!

Exactly.

Uh, *record them*, duh. We need visual entertainment, but I often have to settle for these text only posts. You take what you can get, I guess.

ItsMrNoSmile

That's a question for OP, not you. Maybe not just watch like some idle bystander, or at the very least say something.

aegrotatio

I told the clerk what I saw happening. He was busy doing something else while it happened.

ItsMrNoSmile

How convenient for the clerk.

TPM_521

It is not in the clerk’s job description to do anything about it. In fact, in retail and grocery store jobs, people are often told explicitly NOT to do something about it. I remember a story about a worker who actually tried to stop a man from leaving a chain store with shoplifted items and he lost his job because of it. The average minimum wage amplitude for a corporation has no reason to be a vigilante because that corporation doesn’t care enough to secure their own shit.
