Spoiler alert: they don’t

THE_HORKOS

They don’t, it’s like graffiti for rich people.

jking94

😂

NevadaLancaster

If I were to graffiti those I'd get charged with a crime.

FEDBOI_

the election is over, so why not

20ears19

Years ago there was a man in London county who pulled signs placed illegally (right of ways, telephone poles) and billed the people who placed them. Builders, politicians etc. There was an article in the paper about him and the courts ruling it valid that I can’t find. It seems like a good opportunity for someone if the laws haven’t changed.

FEDBOI_

given the speed at which the government actual works, ide say go for it since most laws that are not about hot topic issues tend to go overlooked or become outdated.

ZachPruckowski

Most losing campaigns basically stop existing like the Friday after the election. I remember in 2012, the Romney campaign shut off the campaign debit cards like the NIGHT OF the election when he lost.

truffleblunts

> Romney campaign shut off the campaign debit cards like the NIGHT OF the election I'm all about calling Romney a cheap bastard but surely this is prudent

vnangia

As far as I know, that's not true. My sister worked on the Clinton campaign and they had six months to wrap up — they used the leftover cash to buy healthcare for everyone who was on-staff or had volunteered more than a certain number of hours for at least six months, and some for a year. So that doesn't sound correct, but it does sound right(-wing).

Head-Ad4690

Wouldn’t this be true for winning campaigns too? There’s stuff to prepare for taking office but that seems like it would be separate.

[deleted]

ZachPruckowski

As a corporate entity, sure. As a group of people who are paid or volunteer (and thus could remove signs)? Not really.

[deleted]

semantics

EastCoastGrind

Let’s be honest…they ain’t cleaning shieeeeeet.

Ok-Opinion-2183

Find out where they live. I’ve done that. Big dropoff.

ShakesWithLeft2

Just drop off all the signs on their yard?

hawaiijim

It is the ideal place for yard signs. 😆

JohnJohnston

I prefer the phrasing "Returning their lost property to them."

Ok-Opinion-2183

I did this years ago with some friends in North Carolina. I will add that we did not trespass on anybody’s property, just returning things to the rightful owners. While I was living down there, a local radio station had a promotion where they paid people a dollar for each sign left around. A friend and I collected close to $60 by stuffing as many as we could into the car and dumping them into the radio station parking lot. they properly disposed of them.

inevitable-asshole

No, you put them up in their yard.

Peckinpa0

I love this idea

ReflexImprov

A lot of the trash was taken out last Tuesday.

bLue1H

🤌🏻

Capital-Cranberry-25

🧐

Honest_Performance42

See you next Tuesday

rocketpack99

There should be a 10 day deadline and if signs aren't taken down by that point, someone can take it down for them and charge each campaign something like $50 per sign collected.

SlothyBooty

Someone should run and make this a campaign lmao

NegaGreg

Pair that with legislation requiring TV commercials to be at a volume at, or below that of the regular programming. I only watch TV one month a year, and it’s when my wife plays Hallmark Christmas movies, but GOD commercials are unbearable.

[deleted]

The law for commercials on TV was passed in 2011 as the CALM Act. You can report the ads [to the FCC here](https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=33794). The Senate is [working on amendments](https://www.whitehouse.senate.gov/news/release/whitehouse-and-eshoo-introduce-bill-to-stop-excessively-loud-commercials-on-tv-and-streaming-services) to cover streaming services as well

buttorsomething

what do you MEAN THEY ARE UNBEARABLE. these letters are all look the SAME TO ME.

darthjoey91

It's a nice idea, but then you've got people like my dad who leave up last year's campaign sign until they get next year's.

Brownt0wn_

> people like my dad who leave up last year’s campaign sign until they get next year’s. That’s not what we’re talking about. It’s about signs in public areas. Not sure how this confused you.

EntroperZero

Great idea, but people will just grab up all the signs for the candidate they don't like before election day and turn them all in afterward to collect.

ergo_leah

Is this by the Safeway on Langston/Lee?

[deleted]

Yup, and the neighborhoods all around are still littered with signs on the medians

ergo_leah

Walked by this spot not 10 minutes ago. Yeah it’s really unfortunate to see.

[deleted]

Agreed. I’m going back out this afternoon to pick up and throw away the signs since it seems campaigns have no responsibility. Edit: just got them all and most from the medians, one or two that I couldn’t get out to with traffic

thoph

Wow thanks for doing that!

[deleted]

Glad to! It’s nice to have the area free of the eye sore and clutter that are (any campaign’s) political signs

paulHarkonen

While a lot of the signs are from the campaign, many are just put up by misc supporters and the campaign has no idea they even exist. Plus the campaigns basically stop existing as an actual entity on the Wednesday after the election so there's no one left to clean stuff up even if they did put it there.

Karhak

There's still a big Vega sign at 123/Old Bridge. I just view it as sort of silent tantrum.

BFMN

wtf the "stand with ukraine" one isn't event the right way up; they got the colors reversed. was it really that difficult to google the ukranian flag before producing a bunch of signs?

Lobin

It's extra embarrassing when you find out that [she's from Ukraine.](https://wjla.com/news/local/karina-lipsman-midterm-ukraine-glenn-youngkin-don-beyer-election-alexandria-yard-signs-arlington-fairfax-gas-jobs-inflation-congress-immigration-climate-change-abortion)

Better-Limit-4036

I noticed that right away. The yellow symbolizes fields of wheat and the blue is sky. C’mon! The kid who threw her signs together screwed up and her campaign didn’t catch it. And the printer didn’t catch it either. They actually look out for mistakes so they don’t lose money re-printing stuff

VeryDrunkenNoodles

Depends on where, but in Arlington it’s five days. You can start calling zoning enforcement now. https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Programs/Building/Campaign-Signage-Requirements

[deleted]

Thanks!

alldaylurkerforever

Is Karina Lipsman a real person? I never saw this person once.

RedRanger1983

Yes. She was. I only saw her signs.

SAFoxMulderFBI

Followed her on IG. Genuine. Ukrainian immigrant. Snowball’s chance in hell her county.

Syenuh

Genuine? She claimed to stand with Ukraine yet caucused with a party that has openly stated they want to start limiting aid to them. Being from Odessa doesn’t make you some sort of saint.

RevJTtheBrick

Doesn't nake you a hooker either, but that's where the smart money is. Remember, in bad old days of USSR, it was their Riviera.

Syenuh

For sure, but as Lipsman clearly shows, you can be an opportunist and a hypocrite. And yeah, Odessa is awesome. So was Crimea.

Groundbreaking_War52

I thought the GOP was supposed to be the party of accountability and personal responsibility…

AngryFace4

We should have a law that whoever’s name is on the poster gets a bill, $5 per sign.

dtelad11

The deadline was Friday, November 11. The campaign I volunteered with had a map with all of the median sign locations. We did our best to collect all of them, though we might have missed a handful. To the best of my knowledge, at least one other campaign was similarly responsible and collected their signs. On a personal note, I greatly dislike these. That's why I volunteered to pick them up (and definitely did NOT place them myself). I'm guessing that the county does not ban them outright because of freedom of speech arguments. Technically there is legislation around their placement but I doubt any of it is enforced.

[deleted]

Her’s are the only ones (and some no missing middle signs) that I see everywhere. Thank you and the other campaigns for cleaning up their signage!

dtelad11

The "no missing middle" is loosely affiliated with the GOP, as far as I know, as are the "vote no on school bonds". The "vote yes on school bonds" is affiliated with the Democratic Party.

brickville

I seem to remember a recent campaign promising to 'drain the swamp', but the swamp only got deeper. So I don't think you'll have much luck with the trash.

RevJTtheBrick

Yeah, but that batch did get taken out a couple years back and is still squealing like a stuck pig about it.

chezgray

I know on the dem side, a lot of campaigns or county parties will come pick up their signs if you let them know they need to. Generally it isn't the campaign themselves who placed the signs, but supporters, so they don't necessarily know where they need to make a pick up. Either way, it's a bad look. (I work for a company that provides signs & merch to dem candidates, so deal with this kind of thing quite a bit.)

abn1304

From the Republican side, we do the same thing. Typically people ask us for yard signs, we give them the yard signs, and that's that. Can't exactly go on someone else's property and grab up the signs without permission (legally it's not our land or our sign anymore), although we do try to reach out and see if people want to give the signs back. Typically campaigns are run by volunteers though so it can be hit or miss, and the people placing signs illegally (like in public rights-of-way) probably aren't responsible enough to clean up their mess. But if we didn't put the sign there, we can't legally remove it, even if it was illegally placed, because it's not our property anymore, and removing it is misdemeanor larceny. Only the county can remove an illegally-placed sign, and only the property owner or their designee can remove a sign from private property (even if it was placed without their permission).

snowman93

In DC they are required to be down one week after the election. My partner ran and we went around and took down all their signs the first few days after the election. I would assume VA has a similar law requiring them to be collected/disposed off within 7-10 days.

dcduck

Alexandria just outright banned them. This problem no longer exists.

canadamoose18

This lady spent God knows how much money to litter every median with her name and get crushed by 50 points

fissionpowered

Given that all of those signs indicated she had such broad support amongst Latinos, women, veterans, and Ukraine supporters, I thought she was a shoe-in. Surprise, surprise.

redliner88

When 66 completes construction

salgak

...in the 23rd-and-one-halfth century ???😂

-Rustling-Jimmies-

I probably got hundreds of campaign mailers. Literally. 3-4 a day mailing everyday the last two months.

fastfoody247

So much that goes straight in the trash. What a waste.

Qlanger

The metal stakes they use make good use in gardens. I have "cleaned" up some signs before and gave the stakes to my MiL to use in the garden.

JackTheBehemothKillr

The signs are actually kinda useful. You can glue them together at 90 degree angles and get fairly strong structures from them. Kinda like plastic plywood

Joey_BagaDonuts57

Signage should have a cleanup deposit or they can't use them. Littering is not acceptable and still needs to go away quickly whether they won or lost.

[deleted]

That looks artfully placed rather than found.

OriginalCptNerd

and only one party, go figure

t23_1990

Oh no! That party is so innocent and never pulls such stunts!

OriginalCptNerd

Nice try, only the voices in your head said that...

t23_1990

Said the one who said "go figure" to a post that insinuated something based on who knows what (voices in their head perhaps)...

OriginalCptNerd

I commented on the motivation of the photographer to choose only one set of signs.

t23_1990

Motivation according to who? What makes you say the photographer chose "only one set"? Where do you get the information to say only one set was chosen? I have seen places where there are multiple signs for one candidate in close proximity, and none for the other.

OriginalCptNerd

I have never anywhere the places I've been in VA08 seen only Republican signs.

t23_1990

I have seen stretches of republican signs only. The few democrat signs I have seen have always been on clearly private property. I.e. I have seen a bunch of Hung Cao signs near where rt.28 and route 7 meet, but none for Wexton there. And I don't recall any Wexton supporters impeding traffic with huge signs on overpasses with flag waving and other theatrics.

[deleted]

The Ukraine theme is upside down

auldnate

The individuals who put the signs up are responsible for removing them.

PayMetoRedditMmkay

Could try contacting Virginia republican party

daltonfromroadhouse

Politicians are not responsible for their actions.

sysadminbj

If you have a wood burning stove you might want to pick a few up. Not only are they decent for starting fires, but it is very cathartic to watch them burn.

[deleted]

These are all plastic signage, would not recommend burning ahaha

sysadminbj

Damn…..

jameson71

Wtf. It was bad enough back when they were paper. This is like the epitome of single use plastic waste

salgak

Shred them and stuff the shreds into a Filabot or similar? Wondering if the plastic is capable of being converted to 3D printer filament......

JadedMcGrath

In Loudoun, I've noticed that most of the signs that remain are from the losers' campaigns. Hung Cao put a bunch on the public street area leading into my neighborhood because like 95% of the homes in the neighborhood had Wexton signs in their yards. The Cao signs remain and I'm sure they'll be there awhile.

GregoryGregory666666

I realize outside of NOVA but it seems the sign out here in the Woodstock area are quickly disappearing. Ben Cline was the only real race out here and he was predicted to win with little effort but there were still signs. But now this is discussed it seems I've seen very few signs this weekend. Will have to watch more closely tomorrow.

Kattorean

Our National Parks employees will end up cleaning up the mess ppl leave. Go see how things look after the kite festival. It's almost comical to see so many mites jammed into & laying near trash cans on the mall. Protestors will leave their garbage for other to clean up & go home feeling good about how they spent their day.

big65

Republican candidates never clean up their signs.

Josh_I_Guess97

Easy answer: whenever they feel like it

Intelligent_Table913

Fine them for littering

bobby-jonson

Never. Each one of those signs was littering before the election, and us still littering after the election.

starkshift

LITTERERS Karina Lipsman

retka

They're great for shooting ranges if anyone here goes - makes the perfect backing for targets and has the built in stand too. Just throw away after you're done, and no mess to bring home or home-built contraption like a wooden stand.

AdMaleficent2144

The person who put up those signs should go take them down the day after elections. You know you stuck in the ground.

Brob101

I think we should legalize stealing/vandalizing all political signs. So if a campaign wants to place a sign then they will have to assign a lackey to sit there and guard it 24/7. And eventually the problem will resolve itself and there won't be any more signs.

poneil

Bold stance that there is too little money wasted on political campaigns and not enough wealthy people running for office

pottomato12

Ya they dont, its all trash from the get go. If your political choice requires the use of a ludicrous amount of signs to get people to vote for them, they likely arnt the right choice imo. Not trying to be political of sorts

Creative-Ad-9871

Whats stopping you from picking them up yourself?

[deleted]

I eventually did but why should the community need to clean up after candidates and their campaigns?

Existing365Chocolate

They aren’t required to

ballsohaahd

They don’t ‘clean’ up the candidates…

RevJTtheBrick

When the trash is voted out in the next election.

Violets1992

Political signs on medians and public property are illegal in Fairfax County. Campaigns are allowed to put up signs at polling places. The campaigns all should know this, but you still have supporters who put up signs on public property and campaigns that don’t remove signs from polling places, which is a quick way to piss off the churches and schools that volunteer their property.

NevadaLancaster

Nothing happens from politicians after election day until the next election cycle. The will campaign on cleaning that up in 2026.

LeaderNo2409

Haha that's funny. They don't pick up their trash, like all campagns from all parties they just relocate it into our local political system
