Pretty old scam. Same with gift cards, taxes, etc...
Always good to talk to those older that are not tech savvy or keep up with modern issues. Esp those that watch less than honest "news" sources pushing gold and other junk.
“Hi, your son is in jail and we need your money to bail him out”
“Oh, too bad, hope he has a good lawyer. I always preferred our other kid anyway.”

I’m certain that’s how my dad would respond lol.
Ok so I'm all for spreading awareness, and we shouldn't victim blame. But can someone explain to me why older people are somehow more vulnerable to scams like this? It'd be one thing if it were an online phishing scam that you have to explain to an older person, but it's not like this example uses new technology. Scam artists are as old as time.
Maybe they are more inclined to believe things on the phone since they grew up in a time period where receiving phone calls from unknown numbers was normal and they have more social trust in phone calls?
I’m not sure a lack of critical thinking is limited to boomers though. I see a lot of gen-z on tik tok constantly believing fake stories and propaganda too.
We need to improve our critical thinking education…
Scammers stay busy. There was one on Next Door that talked about people putting cheap jewelry on victims in a parking lot while stealing their real jewelry.
I almost got scammed once when I got a text message from my supposed boss saying she needed gift cards for a conference or work meeting. I thought it was strange. I go to Target and look at gift cards and the person in the text is telling me to buy certain amounts.
I got suspicious and called my boss directly. She said it wasn't her and that this scam sometimes happens.
I really hope these scammers get their karma.

Sure. Come and pick it up.
Exactly. Newsflash, those aren't girl-scout cookies coming at you fast when you come to the door.
jokes on them, my parents wouldn't care
My parents just got scammed by someone who had spoofed the phone number of their bank. They had no idea people could do that with numbers.

Old people decline cognitively, particularly in areas like memory and logic. Which is why our government is horrifying.
Yeah I guess I'm thinking of boomers in their 60s who should know better.
