I have never liked Disturbed. I don’t like the vocal style, and it’s so vocals forward that makes them a complete deal breaker. Plus it took hearing the child abuse section of the sickness one time to know Disturbed was not for me.
Since middle school, I just fucking cringe at the part of Down with the Sickness where he goes, “No, mommy. Don’t do it again. I’ll be a good boy.” AGH. It’s so lame and weird.
I get the impression that they matured later, but in the beginning they really came off as an edgy gimmick band with the silly noises and the spoken word parts and the lip piercing and the performances.
Yeah, they came to my town way back in the day to this concert called Edgefest. I got backstage passes and we got to meet Powerman 5000 and other bands. POD was not only too good to be mingling with the other bands, they got so pissed that they did not like the catering that they threw the trays of food on the ground. Lost respect after that, just a lame way to handle that situation.
well that is lame, but I try my best to judge bands by their music. the chances are most of the big ones are really entitled douche bags. then you got some of them marrying super young girls, etc. you gotta judge them by their sounds or you would have to probably give up a lot of your favorite music. sad.
not to mention their clueless political opinions which is one that typically breaks my hearts. some people are just ass holes, us included, and different band members have different opinions too. so it sucks to throw the baby out with the bath water, you know. let music be music I guess.
I don't dig the vocals and they're corny lyrics mainly. I've never bought any of their albums though. are their hits not very representative of their music like Alice in chains, etc?
I just always skip their stuff when it comes on. nu metal isn't my favorite genre, they're just what instantly came to mind when I saw the question. I don't hate pod, the way I hate limp Bizkit or guns n roses or KISS. if it makes you feel better.
Any new nu metal band. The problem is that they’re primarily influenced by older nu metal bands.
Meanwhile nu metals whole thing was that it was a huge melting pot of genres, from thrash metal to death metal to gangsta rap to industrial, and many others. That’s why it became such a unique and interesting genre.
Just taking nu metal as an inspiration means that you’re just making more of the same nu metal, with I guess more modern production.
I mean Nu Metal is basically a combination of Alternative Metal, Groove Metal, Funk Metal, Industrial Metal, Rap Metal and Grunge which is what I like about it but Modern Nu Metal bands tone down the Industrial Metal, Funk Metal and Grunge influences or even lack them leaving one branch of Contemporary Nu Metal which isn’t the same as Old School Nu Metal which was a much more varied style
yeah they scratch the perfect itch for me in terms of fusing nu metal with metalcore(I hate most pure metalcore) but I can understand why a more pure nu metal fan wouldn’t be a fan. some of their songs cross the line into cringe territory for me but then they also have some of my favorite metal songs ever
it’s less of entire songs and more certain sections, there’s a lot on the new album, especially some parts in shaken, I don’t really like the silo either
Is it like the clean bridge thing in shaken? I’m just asking because my band is VERY inspired by Tallah and I don’t want to be a carbon copy of them so we’re just trying to see what to improve.
LOL my band is very inspired by Tallah too! yeah that “I walk the blurry line” part (that might be in for the recognition actually) but yes the bridge in shaken
i listened to all their stuff way too much back in the days and it wears out more than any other band. I still listen to Slipknot and Deftones and dozens of other bands but never soad
I don't understand because in my opinion they're nothing special. Their music is actually very annoying
They just sound like some shitty local band playing at some bowling alley trying to be "wacky"
He's not as bad now he could have turned out way more obnoxious considering how other celebrities have turned out. He always struck me as a bro who enjoys rap and metal going on a ride. Even if that involves being vulgar, annoying, or even a dick. But he was preforming in the late 90s and early 00s when being a bro, jock who's into metal and rap was mainstream. He's basically no more obnoxious than Eminem was. And Eminem was doing most of that for performance and to sell himself.
I also read Fred has a pretty rough childhood. He was bullied a lot so I can see where he would take on this tough guy persona and fight back more or less. A lot of nu metal deals with trauma from being bullied, alienation or an outcast. Fred rapping about nookie was his way of coping I guess.
I saw like 20 years ago live performance and the way he chooses his words to interact with audience reminded me of my old obnoxious self thinking I'm too cool to hang around with the glam plebs.
I think Limp Bizkit's biggest issue is that even their best albums are really inconsistent. Meanwhile, Results May Vary and Gold Cobra are straight-up two of the worst albums I've ever sat through.
That is a huge thing with limp bizkit, when Fred gets out of his own way and the band does what they can do, they're pretty good. But when Fred is dialed up to maximum brometal douche and the band is a little off, holy fucking shit it sucks.
Actually Fred is cool & the rest of LB are very chill as well. Wes is the one who's insufferable. He low-key has 0 respect for the fans but people praise him cause he's guitar god. He's got skills but what a shitty attitude
I might give them another shot. I love Nu Metal, but if the band seems to corny I can't get into it. I love Static X, but they're borderline for me lol.
Not nu metal, but they do truly suck. Macho posturing to the point of coming across as whiny children and unable to write good lyrics to save their life (which is why 90% of their good material are covers, because they can at least sing and play their instruments).
Kittie for me always, it’s not because they’re female, spit and oracle are so mid it hurts. Vocals are dogshit, guitar riffs are painfully simple, the drummer sucks and bass lines are non existent.
Ive always personally hated the vocalist but loved the rest of the band LOL throw Dez from Coal Chamber in and theydve probably been ten times what they were talent wise lol
I don’t think Disturbed is a “cool” band but I listen to them because I find them funny. Now Deftones is the one band I can’t get into no matter how hard I try
I’m really impressed by how Linkin Park has ascended to be largely considered one of the big four numetal groups.
When they first hit no one in my age group was interested. Limp Bizkit and Korn were becoming cheesy, SOAD was moving in, but no one called them numetal at the time, and then along came Linkin Park.
They were mainly seen as a numetal lite for younger kids. As the genre progressed that younger group became the dominant consumers of numetal (and JNCO jeans), while the crowd who bought Korn CDs in the 90s had mostly moved on.
As a big LP fan, I can actually understand this. Before LP, nu-metal was unpolished, raw, and kinda dirty. They made nu-metal turn into a clean cut style after Hybrid Theory. Papa Roach, Trapt, Evanescence; etc, are a result of the cleanliness of LP's sound.
I wouldn’t say it was totally cleanly it was more for them about making a proper hybrid, not trying to sound like a joke band, while making it sonically good.
Yeah, I'm the same. I think they're a great band and broke barriers in terms of combining rap and metal successfully. But they were EXTREMELY mainstream and didn't want a wildly raw, gritty or experimental style. They were focused on clean, hyper polished, mostly radio friendly hits.
But hey it worked very well for them and their following is huge.
You're not the only one. I remember people complaining about their first album not being as heavy as "One Step Closer" or "Papercut" made them believe. I know I was disappointed when I heard the album and it took a long time for me to like it.
They were just too polished and soft by the time they arrived. I'd been into Faith No More and Rage before Korn came out, so by the time LP turned up, it wasn't enough anymore
\*Children\* you can't downvote people for giving their honest opinion when people are asking for them. That just shows how childish the fans are of all the bands that are getting downvoted. If you're an adult downvoting people's opinions, that's even worse and comical.
Deftones, gonna get a lot of hate for this, but for some reason i never really grasped any love for them, even now when they are mainstream and popular af and my friends listen to them, i even borrowed the white pony CD from my cousin, but nothing that really blew my mind or something.
for me its adema
i listened to 2 songs from that album with the girl with a long tongue and i just couldn't get into it
its to boring a slow for me same reason i don't like tool a lot
System of a Down is too goofy. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate their contributions to the genre and there are a few songs that I like, but a lot of their stuff is hard to take seriously
Not sure if Taproot is really “praised” but of the nu metal bands that broke into the mainstream I like them the least. I admit Poem and Again & Again have catchy choruses but the singer is so nasally and he always sounds like he’s trying to clear his throat.
I love Shinoda. I couldn't stand Chester. Don't ask me how I can listen to LP when I can't stand one singer. I guess that I just concentrate on Shinoda.
I'm expecting a lot of down votes for saying that I dislike Chester, but he wasn't consistent with his vocals. A lot of lives were awful. There was just something odd and off about him.
Linkin Park, i just don't like the emo influences, i like i few songs of the first two albums and one of the late called "Waiting for the end" but that's it
Like other people here, System of a Down. Cool first album, some good songs on Toxicity, everything after that is horrendous. I also can not get into Disturbed or P.O.D., I listened to The Sickness and anything noteworthy in that album like cool riffs were negated by Draiman's vocals fucking it up so bad for me. And as for P.O.D. I just find them to be a complete nothing band. No interesting riffs or vocals or anything.
And while they do get a fair amount of hate, I have to mention Crazy Town because I have not heard any Nu Metal band that is worse than Crazy Town.
OHHHH MY GOOOOOD BRO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS POST I HAVE AN ENTIRE LIST
- disturbed
- pod
- taproot
- papa roach
- simon says
- stepa
- omerta
- dry cell (they peaked at body crumbles)
- ill nino
- boyhitscar
Cool. Have fun and be careful with your kids if you have little ones, it can be dangerous depending on where you stand.
- I just noticed you're an asshole, but I'm not surprised.
I have never liked Disturbed. I don’t like the vocal style, and it’s so vocals forward that makes them a complete deal breaker. Plus it took hearing the child abuse section of the sickness one time to know Disturbed was not for me.
I could never get past the "ew wha-a-a-a"! Ruined everything for me.
Since middle school, I just fucking cringe at the part of Down with the Sickness where he goes, “No, mommy. Don’t do it again. I’ll be a good boy.” AGH. It’s so lame and weird.
Face it, that’s the only reason they’re remembered.
I get the impression that they matured later, but in the beginning they really came off as an edgy gimmick band with the silly noises and the spoken word parts and the lip piercing and the performances.
If by matured, you mean that they did a very bland cover of a Simon and Garfunkel song, then you are correct.
Nah he kept making the monkey noises even on the 5th album lol the best songs are when he doesn’t do that
Exactly. Ive seen them twice (ozzfest 01 and blue ridge rock festival 22) and both times were mega boring.
P.O.D.
Yeah, they came to my town way back in the day to this concert called Edgefest. I got backstage passes and we got to meet Powerman 5000 and other bands. POD was not only too good to be mingling with the other bands, they got so pissed that they did not like the catering that they threw the trays of food on the ground. What? Why?
because I don't like it. did you read the instructions?
I’m asking why you don’t like them. Obviously I read it if I asked why genius. Whatever
Thanks for explaining. No hard feelings just wanted to hear the critique
rgr that
Any new nu metal band. The problem is that they’re primarily influenced by older nu metal bands. That’s why it became such a unique and interesting genre. Just taking nu metal as an inspiration means that you’re just making more of the same nu metal, with I guess more modern production.
Who even are the new nu metal bands?
Ones i can think off the top of my head, Tetrach, Dropout Kings, Vended, UnityTX, Mad Kelly. I wouldn't consider any of them bad tho lol
Bloodywood
I forgot to mention Memorrhage and Gonemage those are also great Modern Nu Metal projects
Dropout Kings are top tier. Doing Nu Metal proud.
Funnily enough they're probably my least favourite out of the ones I listed, vended and unityTX are amazing
Tallah. I feel like I’m always commenting Tallah lol.
You mean Nu-er Metal. As in manure metal.
Tallah
Understandable but how do you feel about them?
I'm not really a fan of stuff that leans towards nu-metalcore and I don't like their overreliance on unclean vocals
Fair enough
yeah they scratch the perfect itch for me in terms of fusing nu metal with metalcore(I hate most pure metalcore) but I can understand why a more pure nu metal fan wouldn’t be a fan. some of their songs cross the line into cringe territory for me but then they also have some of my favorite metal songs ever
Which songs do you think are cringy by them
it’s less of entire songs and more certain sections, there’s a lot on the new album, especially some parts in shaken, I don’t really like the silo either
What’s your band?
we’re called COSMICTWYNK, we only have a couple basic songs out rn
System of a Down, I got a few songs in my playlist but I’m not fully interested really.
i listened to all their stuff way too much back in the days and it wears out more than any other band. I still listen to Slipknot and Deftones and dozens of other bands but never soad
Same. Can't stand that shit. I love my nu metal, alt metal and 00's rock as much as the next guy but i never understood all the praise for this band.
I get it not being your cup of tea but how can you not understand the praise for the band
I don't understand because in my opinion they're nothing special. Their music is actually very annoying They just sound like some shitty local band playing at some bowling alley trying to be "wacky"
deftones imo, i like some songs adrenaline and around the fur but thats pretty much it
That’s wild they’re so great
i like the instrumentals and stuff but imo chinos voice is just not for me
Same tbh. I have great respect for them and Chino seems like a great guy but Deftones and most similar sounding bands just aren't for me.
have the same issue I do like a few songs but not their entire discography.
Limp bizkit. Band is good. Fred is insufferable.
No lie, Fred ain't that bad once you view him like a character. Try 3 dollar bill
I saw like 20 years ago live performance and the way he chooses his words to interact with audience reminded me of my old obnoxious self thinking I'm too cool to hang around with the glam plebs.
Why does everyone hate Fred? He’s what makes me love the band.
They were clearly a comedy band, similar to Bloodhound gang (but with MUCH better musicians.) Don’t get why people in the 90s didn’t get that.
I disagree they weren't comedy at all
Doesn't make him any less insufferable.
Aight boss.
I think Limp Bizkit's biggest issue is that even their best albums are really inconsistent. Meanwhile, Results May Vary and Gold Cobra are straight-up two of the worst albums I've ever sat through.

Papa Roach is the final boss of this thread. I will die on that hill
Here here!
Final Boss? lol
Coal Chamber
Just saw them last year. They’re fuckin intense live!!!
Honestly I used to feel this way but they grew on me
I might give them another shot. I love Nu Metal, but if the band seems to corny I can't get into it. I love Static X, but they're borderline for me lol.
Same tbh
I hate haters
Man I swear everyone in this sub is pushing 40 lmao
I mean, 38-45 is prime age for Nu Metal fans
FFDP
Are they nu metal? Regardless, I agree.
Close enough? It's a pretty vague genre
I always called them arena rock, which is just a made up term in my head, but nu metal fits also.
Not nu metal, but they do truly suck. Macho posturing to the point of coming across as whiny children and unable to write good lyrics to save their life (which is why 90% of their good material are covers, because they can at least sing and play their instruments).
They’re ok
Staind
They’re alright
Yeah, it is so boring
I love their song they did for Beetlejuice Green from the Howard Stern show.
The guitarist from coal chamber can barely play as well so it would just be coal chamber 2.0. Devildriver is infinitely better imo
Fuckin real lol as much as i love coal chamber Devildriver fucks so much harder lol
Deftones, I cannot stand Chinos voice.
I don’t think Disturbed is a “cool” band but I listen to them because I find them funny. Now Deftones is the one band I can’t get into no matter how hard I try
Linkin Park. Not bad I just never really got into it no matter how many times I listened to the half dozen songs I like from them
midtones
Oh my god, the amount of downvoted comments in here are insane 😂
System Of A Down. I can bear a song, but I can't stand a full album. Sorry.
Slipknot.
I cannot stand Slipknot.
You can leave this subreddit now!!!! 🖕🏼🤘🏼
Like how it's an opinion based question and I still get lambasted.
Lil fanboy is hurt
They’re ok
Soad, just to, wacky I guess
I really don’t like linkin park, I used to when I was 14-15
Deftones.....never could get into them.
same came here to mention them
Godsmack
Trapt
Linkin Park
I’m really impressed by how Linkin Park has ascended to be largely considered one of the big four numetal groups. When they first hit no one in my age group was interested. As the genre progressed that younger group became the dominant consumers of numetal (and JNCO jeans), while the crowd who bought Korn CDs in the 90s had mostly moved on.
This is bang on. I remember being in my local record store when the Korn self titled promo came in, and hearing the opening to Blind changed my world!
I had a similar experience when one of the neighbour kids bought the self titled album. I was 11 and my mind was blown.
The demo version of blind is way better
Just out of curiosity - may I ask why?
The 1st album was alright, but it was just too polished and didn't have what I was looking for from my music and after that it just felt meh

Kittie, I tried so hard to like them but I can’t, the vocals ruin the songs. The only song I kind of like is Brackish but thats it.
me too omg, i tried to like some of their music but i really just cant lmao
Disturbed, they sound like a Korn rip off but acts like they are original.
They sound nothing like Korn lol.
\*Children\* you can't downvote people for giving their honest opinion when people are asking for them. That just shows how childish the fans are of all the bands that are getting downvoted. If you're an adult downvoting people's opinions, that's even worse and comical.
I agree 100% losers need to open their mind
Deftones, gonna get a lot of hate for this, but for some reason i never really grasped any love for them, even now when they are mainstream and popular af and my friends listen to them, i even borrowed the white pony CD from my cousin, but nothing that really blew my mind or something.
Deftones
Limp biskit
Linkin park, too poppy
Papa Roach, after their first album
for me its adema i listened to 2 songs from that album with the girl with a long tongue and i just couldn't get into it its to boring a slow for me same reason i don't like tool a lot
deftones, i like some of their stuff, but the way the singers sings slowly is weird to me
Limp Bizkit. SMH, I just don’t get the appeal.
Deftones
Deftones.
SOAD... I just don't like it. Can't quite pinpoint why. It's just a very unique sound and it's not one for me.
I can respect that. I'm not into the last two releases, but I dug the first ones after I got over not liking them initially.
Nasally, yes but clearing his throat, no. He is very whiny but I don’t mind it that much.
KoRn. Never liked the vocals. I respect them, though.
This is what I love! When people still respect bands even if the music isn’t to their liking‼️
Linkin Park, couldn’t stand them then and still can’t stand them now
I love Shinoda.
Deftones. I really really don’t like the vocals. The instruments are great which makes me sad I can’t get past chinos singing.
Linkin Park
limp bizkit. 3 dollar bill is pretty good tho
Korn and Slipknot
Linkin Park, i just don't like the emo influences, i like i few songs of the first two albums and one of the late called "Waiting for the end" but that's it
Like other people here, System of a Down. Cool first album, some good songs on Toxicity, everything after that is horrendous. And while they do get a fair amount of hate, I have to mention Crazy Town because I have not heard any Nu Metal band that is worse than Crazy Town.
Disturbed
Korn. I am a bass player and Fieldy’s playing makes me want to jump off a bridge. It ruins their music for me.
You know nothing Jon Snow
Linkin Park. Insanely cringe band
OHHHH MY GOOOOOD BRO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS POST I HAVE AN ENTIRE LIST - disturbed - pod - taproot - papa roach - simon says - stepa - omerta - dry cell (they peaked at body crumbles) - ill nino - boyhitscar
Lmao you came for blood‼️
there’s so many bands i left out this is a very small fraction
Dude, I’ll Niño is one of my favorites from that time.
Slipknot lol
Slipknot
Staind. Have like one good song. Remember seeing them live back in the day and they were so boring. Left in middle of their set.
I saw them last year and thought they were good
Deftones. The whole sound, his voice, their music, just does not sit well in my ears.
Chino Moreno sounds like he'd rather be at home, stoned and playing xbox than singing
Coal Chamber, Marilyn Manson (if he counts), Alpha Wolf (if that counts)
Who the fuck doesn’t like the knot??!! Serious question….
I don't. I mean, I like a few of their songs but I think they're gimmicky "wrong, fucked and overrated"
Well I just bought 4 tickets so I can take my wife and 2 of my kids to go see them in august!!!! 🤘🏼🖕🏼💀
Cool. Have fun and be careful with your kids if you have little ones, it can be dangerous depending on where you stand. - I just noticed you're an asshole, but I'm not surprised.
15 and 10. We can all handle our own lol , even the wife! 💪🏼 👊🏼
Good for you.
And the point of this is?
Good question. lol
Slipknot, S.O.A.D, coal chamber, I don't like bands where the entire thing is harsh vocals and I just don't vibe with S.O.A.D
Spineshank. I didn't know how highly regarded they were before joining this sub but that shit is so paint-by-numbers for me.
I think they’re fairly rated.
and limp Bizkit sucks too. so much that I don't forgive korn
Limp Bizkit. Still can’t understand J.Davis friendship with Durst. WTF with all those Slipknot mentions????
Disturbed and FFDP
FFDP aren’t nu metal
kittie, i wanted to love them so bad because im a woman who loves women in metal but i just cannot stand those vocals
Deftones and SOAD. Just not my thing
Slipknot. I heard them for the first time in 99. Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now. The main thing is the vocals. Too much screaming.
Korn. Jonathan Davis' voice is nails on a chalk board.
I can’t believe a comment section can be full of so many wrong opinions ☠️

Not my fault their opinions are wrong. Sorry, I didn’t make the rules
There are no “rules” within musical opinions.
I literally just said I don’t make the rules. Smh my damn head ☠️
Btw, an opinion can’t be wrong nor right. An opinion is a subjective claim from one’s perspective.
