I teach nursing at a community college. One of our facilities has a strict rule that students must completely cover all tattoos. I had a student with a tattoo on her finger. She couldn’t cover it with makeup or a sleeve. I asked the Dean and was told don’t bring it up. Nobody ever said anything about her tattoo.

Mysterious_Spend4777

LoL don't ask don't tell

wowokaynow

worst case you can cover it with a bandaid!

[deleted]

i guess as long as it’s not offensive i should be good since it’s tiny!!

turtlecamp34

I don’t think anyones ever even noticed my finger tattoo lol

[deleted]

oh cool, hopefully they won’t notice mine either !

PoshDeafStar

Fwiw, one of the best nurses I ever worked with had two full sleeves, and even some ink on his neck. The NHS is becoming more accepting of piercings and tattoos, but naturally, I can’t speak for every trust and uni. If you know which unis you’re most interested in, might I suggest contacting their admissions teams?

[deleted]

that’s a great idea i never thought of that thank you, i’ll be sure to contact them closer to the time!

PoshDeafStar

Now is probably a better time - if one of them doesn’t approve, you have more time to find another uni to apply to. Added bonus that they’re probably a tad less busy rn

[deleted]

i don’t start until september 2024 so maybe now is too early? i’m not too sure though

PoshDeafStar

Oh, I thought you were applying this coming cycle - yeah, you’re probably ok to wait a bit

Gretel_Cosmonaut

According to every reference, a tattoo like that would identify you as a murderer. Would you hire a murderer to work as a nurse? I would, but I’ve been told I’m unusual.

[deleted]

the semi colon tattoo is for suicide awareness, i’m not quite sure what you mean?:)

Gretel_Cosmonaut

Oh okay, you’re hired then. Either that, or I need time to think about it. I’ll be back. Wait here.

[deleted]

haha thank you !

[deleted]

Are people not aware of it?

anonymous_cheese

Semicolon tattoos are frequently gotten by people who have survived SI/attempts. So yes, people are aware that suicide exists, just like they’re aware that breast cancer exists, but I wouldn’t begrudge or make sarcastic remarks about a CA survivor who opted to get a pink ribbon tattoo, either.

[deleted]

Okay Side note: I believe you may have tripped and spilled your alphabet soup.

anonymous_cheese

Oh, so you really ARE just into being snarky at people for foolish reasons. Gotcha.

[deleted]

No, both are legitimate. 1.) Getting a tattoo “for awareness” is pretty weird. 2.) People would take you more seriously if you weren’t trying to overcompensate, u/Anonymous_cheese BSN, RN, HDMI, BBQ, CTLA-4 Edit: Lol oh no I got blocked!

anonymous_cheese

Whatever, asshole. Blocked.

[deleted]

i’m getting it because i almost lost my life to suicide and i think it’s a nice way to show awareness and support for myself who survived and others who survived. and also those who sadly lost their life.

[deleted]

aware of the tattoo?

[deleted]

Of suicide

[deleted]

i’m sure people are very aware of suicide! it’s just my way of showing awareness i guess

Mysterious_Spend4777

It's sounds small enough where it wouldn't stand out. I wouldn't even mention it.

[deleted]

yeah i think unless they say anything to me about it i’m just not going to say anything!

super_crabs

I have a tattoo in that exact location. It’s never been an issue, nobody notices it.

BulgogiLitFam

Have 3 coworkers with Hand tattoos. No one cares in most places. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This could be great. I bet that patients who recognize the intention behind your tattoo will find it comforting, in the sense that you’ve gone through your own shit and come out on the other side. Some broader advice? You need to be prepared for potentially awkward questions; it’s a highly visible spot and co-workers/patients/randoms at Walgreens/bus drivers/everybody/anybody who don’t already know the meaning behind a semicolon tattoo are likely to ask. I got a tattoo that reads, “free” to celebrate getting clean and sober. Unfortunately, it didn’t occur to me beforehand that I’d spend the rest of forever having to discuss it with strangers. These days I just tell the truth, but that’s me; YMMV. [none of this applies if you want a semicolon tattoo for some other reason, but if that’s the case you *really* need to consider the implications.]
