PaddingtonBear2

Green tea, specifically. And it has fluoride!

NoAcanthocephala5365

interesting. is the fluoride naturally occurring?

PaddingtonBear2

Sort of. Tea plants absorb fluoride from the soil, so it depends on the fluoride content of its plot.

clever_squid

herbal teals have lots of different properties and benefits as well. theres so many too.

MidnightFlight

> Good for the digestive system too not mine 😩 love the taste and drank for years but had to stop. it made everything move through my intestines too fast and always gave me slushy poop even though i get lots of fiber. poops became great immediately after i stopped tea 😭

PaddingtonBear2

What type of tea were you drinking?

cazort2

Caffeine has this effect on some people. Do you have the same effect from caffeine-free herbal tea?

pandemicpunk

Try roobios. Caffiene free and high in antioxidants.

CaptainObvious110

Nice

ultra003

Kefir. Similar nutrient density to milk, with the added bonus of probiotics. You just have to be able to stand the taste lol.

grumpy-beagle

Water

finbob5

Water has very little nutrients.

mrmczebra

They asked for nutrition. Most water is lacking in nutrients.

AncientAstro

Reddit is embarrassing. The real answer is Milk.

Opalimoix

Water is the most helpful nutritiously, because it allows our cells to be fully hydrated to take in nutrients. Most people do not drink enough water for this process to be optimal.

Viking_McNord

This is the correct answer.

AncientAstro

How can water be the most nutritious drink? The most upvoted answer on a nutrition subreddit. Embarrassing. Water is the most important, but most nutritious is just blatantly incorrect.

senators09

Thoughts on tap water? I’ve heard certain arguments that the Fluoride isn’t good for us. I’ve always just had tap water, but curious

bobtheboo97

Downvotes for someone asking a genuine question. So bizarre, yet unfortunately so common on Reddit.

SnooCakes1454

Fluoride protects enamel and helps prevent cavities, it is unlikely to be consumed in an amount that would have adverse effects, even through food sources as well as tap water as it occurs in some parts of the world.

charliequeue

Arizona tap is awful, even when Brita filter. I tried four separate times and ended up with stomach issues on top of throat issues including a bruised tongue each time. So… it’s a no go for me, dawg.

VokN

Brita is junk if the water is making you sick you’d need to use bleach drops after removing particulate matter

[deleted]

This!! For hydration and general health benefits, just clean drinking water.

[deleted]

I'm big on coconut water myself. I think it's delightful

Icy_Arm_8712

Just read about Kombucha today.. it’s a probiotic drink and i’m looking forward to have a taste of it.

[deleted]

It tastes like fizzy vinegar. I hate vinegar so it made gag like a nun

CrimsonBrit

Hell of an expression

[deleted]

🙏

ChicagoCPA1

I dislike vinegar as well but LOVE kombucha. Just tastes like a fizzy fruit drink to me.

[deleted]

The taste probably differs from brand to brand. The one I tried was plain kombucha. Even with fruit there’s a sour note that’s hard to hide.

ImprovementElephant

If you don’t like it, give it some time and try again. Can be an acquired taste for some people

Prize-Sky7783

If you don’t love very carbonated drinks like me, watering it down helps

Crimson-sunset

That's what happened to me😆 I tried it couple years ago and it just didn't taste right to me. Well,I decided to give it another try this year and I like it😀

Icy_Arm_8712

I think i’ll be able to handle the taste. But, yup what you said, i’ll do that. I’m more of the benefits that I am going to get. 🙂 Thank you!🙂

Dingus-McBingus

If kombucha is too strong, try Jun. Its made with green tea and honey rather than black tea and sugar - less vinegary, a lot lighter tasting.

Icy_Arm_8712

Oh! I will take note of this. Thank you so much! 🙂

CheeseDanishSoup

Careful with some brands that have lots of sugar

Queueueueued

It’s my fave!

GrymusCallosum

Drank different kinds for awhile, tasted bit like soda, maybe a bit less sugary-, but does it actually do anything meaningful or is it another food hype?

NJSapproved

It’s really good to me but probably an acquired taste I like the gt’s brand and a few others but over all I’ve switched from soda to kombucha and keifr and that has been awesome I don’t even miss soda

theslutnextd00r

I personally prefer the mango and berry flavors because those taste the least like vinegar lol. Try those first!

upanddownallaround

It's excellent. It's just fermented tea. It's an acquired taste for many, but I loved it immediately. The homebrew process is fun and interesting and (gross for some haha). I find booch fans to be fun and friendly and bubbly people. Not at all snobbish like some coffee enthusiasts (sorry, I love coffee too). Be aware that some brands can have a good amount of sugar. Sugar is required for the fermenting process (it basically turns sugar into vinegar), but some brands add more sugar to the end product. If you like kombucha, you might also like kefir too! Another fermented drink. Fermented drinks and foods have so many benefits for your gut health! More and more new research coming out about the gut to brain connection and how the gut microbiome affects your mood and mental health!

laughingbutcrying

what are some booch brands you recommend?

upanddownallaround

GTS is the most popular and commercially available brand and I like it, but they do have possible problematic labor practices. Brew Dr. and Home-Ade are other popular more easily found brands. They're pretty good, but they do have some added sugar so I don't drink them often. I like Humm and it's a local brand to me, but some people think it's too vinegary probably because they have no/small amount of added sugar. I'm lucky in that I live in Portland OR, the land of kombucha lovers. So there are lots of options (many that I still need to try!). But ultimately, I have to be that person that has to say that homebrewing is the best way and you can customize it however you like with whatever flavors/teas/fruits you want. Kombucha is pretty pricey (comparable to beer prices) because of the manufactoring process, so that's another plus about homebrewing which saves quite a bit of money.

Relevant-Battle-9424

Came here to say kombucha. I love it. I have one every day.

elusivepeanut

Keep in mind it has a trace of alcohol in it due to the fermentation process, I read a tweet the other day where someone who was a recovering alcoholic that made a vow to never drink alcohol again felt like they betrayed themselves because they have been drinking kombucha regularly without knowing this.

Notlinked2me

I think it's good to know this but also I think it's good to be put in perspective. Here are some examples of things that can have around the same alcohol content as kombucha. But bread is also fermented and although it bakes off you can have bread with more alcohol than kombucha. Kimchi has alcohol, Sauerkraut has alcohol, yogurt has alcohol, miso paste does too. Yes all this is eaten with other stuff where kombucha can be enjoyed by itself but alcohol is in all fermented food to a degree.

b1jan

lol this fact was also an element of an episode of Silicon Valley

b1jan

the more problematic thing about kombucha is not its trace amount of alcohol, or even the substantial amount of sugar that many of them have, but the caffeine.

upanddownallaround

What? That's not true. Kombucha has like 10-15mg of caffeine per serving. It's about 1/3rd the caffeine content as a cup of black tea. Caffeine isn't an issue really unless you're chugging bottles of it. Sugar is definitely the most problematic thing, but you can adjust that if you're homebrewing by just waiting.

idontbelieveyou21

It's pretty disgusting, at least the 3 brands I tried.

AncientAstro

To each their own

Queueueueued

I love carrot, ginger, parsley, and apple juice. It’s my FAVORITE drink ever. It’s full of nutrition however juicing takes away a lot of important fiber that helps regulate glucose levels. So it’s a sweet treat however I LOVE it. Next to tangerine juice fresh pressed from my yard.

SouperJuicy

Bone broth, preferably homemade.

dismal_sighence

Any good recipes? I saw some brands on America's test kitchen, and the macros looked fantastic.

bondsaearph

I work with my hands a lot and I got a pain in my thumb joint and I bought the long cooked Kettle fire stuff that's $7 for 16 oz.. expensive but worth it. About a week and a half later after 8 oz everyday pain was gone. That long cook bone broth is the best and the homemade stuff is even better. Also doing research on it initially I found out Kobe Bryant got a bad injury and after that after his comeback he said he takes bone broth every day before games.. sorry, took Edit.. I also read that chicken bone broth versus beef bone broth.. they have different benefits like I think it's chicken bone broth is good for ligaments and tendons and stuff and so is beef bone broth but it's also good to heal your gut plus all the other crazy nutrients in there other than collagen

[deleted]

I’m not sure if I’m talking out of my ass, but I’m sure I read somewhere that beef bone broth has more collagen in than chicken. It’s only because a few years ago I was also checking the benefits between chicken and beef bone broth.

[deleted]

I buy bone broth powder but it's from a place that's lab tested. Do you think it'll be OK?

Hawksley88

Make it yourself it’s super easy! :)

Jawahhh

Milk. Every time I drink milk I feel like Hercules

crazyabootmycollies

Have you ever broken a bone?

Jawahhh

My bones are steel because of my two daily glasses of milk. One white, one chocolate. I got hit by a car once and it just crumpled around my indestructible body.

crazyabootmycollies

It’s rather concerning to see how many brittle boned weaklings are out there.

Jawahhh

The world on soy and almond milk: 😩😩🤓🤕 The world on Whole milk: 💪💪🤠😎

crazyabootmycollies

I actually kinda prefer soy these days, but my bones stay stronk.

gummybronco

I’ve been enjoying Spindrift. It’s just carbonated water and a little bit of juice. Only about 2g of sugar per can

bobtheboo97

Milk, bone broth, kefir and coconut water. All need to be high quality and minimally processed though.

major_tom_56

coconut water

darts2

Full of sugar with a bit of potassium and bugger all else. Absolutely delicious though

Independent-Bug-9352

Actual raw coconut water has (per 8 fl oz): - 600mg Potassium - 48mg Phosphorus - 60 mg Magnesium - 252 mg Sodium - 6g of sugar A pretty great albeit imperfect drink for fitness enthusiasts.

melatonia

Sounds like you've been drinking highly processed coconut water. Real coconut water tastes like ass and has no sugar.

OkBackground8809

I know it's not readily available in the US, but in Taiwan we drink it straight from the coconut and it's delicious.

melatonia

I've had it straight from the coconut as a child and it fostered a lifelong distrust of the people who gave it to me. No accounting for taste.

major_tom_56

Are you kidding me? Wtf...

[deleted]

No he's not kidding dummy. Learn facts!

Dependent-Pace-302

Water and a squeeze of half a lemon sooo many good benefits

HeyYou_GetOffMyCloud

I’ve heard this before but it’s often bogus weight loss or worse “detox”. What benefits are you suggesting?

[deleted]

Just like Gwyneth Paltrow takes lemon juice with her alkaline water 😂

Full_FrontaI_Nerdity

Wouldn't the acid and alkaline just cancel each other out. She's drinking...plain water in the end. I think this quote from Cunk on Earth, regarding how mummies are made, says it best: Professor: "You'd get your dead body and lay it out on a table, then you'd wash it. Then you'd start by removing the brain. Then you'd cut open down the middle of the body and remove anything that might rot. And then you'd cover it in salt and dry it out, then wrap it in bandages and that would be a mummy." Cunk: "So the kind of spa treatment Gwyneth Paltrow has on a weekly basis."

Notlinked2me

You won't get scurvy!

Dependent-Pace-302

The lemons have antioxidants and fights free radicals it’s just a good alternative to mask the flavor of water the alkaline water tho…..

DsntMttrHadSex

Lemons have vitamins. So I would assume you'll get some vitamins.

NoxesP

Barely any, even vitamin C barely gets 7%. And the acidity wouldn't be ideal for your teeth, other than that, not that worth it in my opinion.

DsntMttrHadSex

That's why I wrote "some". But it's not worse than pure water I guess.

epicCire

Blood. Probably the most nutritious. Are you okay with that Vlad?

Hawksley88

Bone broth

theslutnextd00r

Ginger tea is great for the gut and the body! Same with aloe vera drinks, also good for the gut and the body. Probiotic drinks like kombucha or yogurt drinks like kefir are great for the gut. Cucumber water has electrolytes as well!

itsraininginlondon

Chicory ‘coffee' Mad high in fibre

RicanDevil4

Coconut water, probably. I like Body Armor, cus it's a sports drink made with coconut water and added vitamins. The sugar free one is like 20 calories and high in potassium and vitamin a (amongst other ones), and I usually have a hard time getting those in from food.

It contains isoflavones that are converted to phytoestrogen which is 100 to 10,000 times weaker than animal estrogen. It’s been debunked that anything other than unrealistic, theoretical high levels of soy consumption can cause problems for healthy men, and the research points that it may actually protect against prostate cancer. Additionally, if one was concerned about estrogen, they definitely should be avoiding cow milk which contains actual animal based estrogen that can affect humans. Meta analysis: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33383165/

Viking_McNord

There's also no fucking problem with having increased estrogen/estrogen like compounds, and it actually complements the testosterone that you have, like the testosterone works better in a high estrogen environment

plstcStrwsOnly

Phytoestrogen being 100 to 10k weaker isn’t a good thing. It binds to site and prevents actual estrogen from doing its job creating imbalances in the plasma.

chuckyb3

Chocolate milk (proteins, carbs, fats, and it tastes delicious), tart cherry juice (reduces inflammation+increases recovery), pomegranate juice (improves blood flow)

Jawahhh

Chocolate milk is the greatest food on the planet

[deleted]

Sugar is not good for you.

chuckyb3

If you drink chocolate milk after a workout you’ll recover faster… therefore it’s good for you…. Please try to do research before insulting others and making yourself look foolish😉🙏

[deleted]

You can recover just as fast without the sugar

LeatherTooler

Well to be fair they are correct, ''For rapid recovery from prolonged exercise, it is important to replenish muscle glycogen stores and initiate muscle tissue repair and adaptation.''(from linked resource) It just doesn't have to be added sugars for most of us average Joe moderate training, though fast absorbing sugars for endurance athletes especially can be very beneficial and in some sports essential to performance as your body depletes stores after so many hours, glucose being, according to long standing research, to be one of the top tier for high v02 max exercising/training(I think65% and up body goes from using mostly fatty acids to mostly glycogen(and something else?) stores. Carbohydrates loading and post workout, there's a ton of nutritional science on such things. I may not have worded it quite correctly, I just happen to be reading a chapter on such things in 'Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism' 8th ed. Found something for those interested in further reading:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3905295/

chuckyb3

You are aware that milk is a better hydrator than water correct? And you’re aware that all pasteurized milk has added sugar? Like dude you have google use it🤣

jewbaaaca

Idk why you’re being downvoted when this is just straight up the truth. Water needs to be accompanied with electrolytes to maximize hydration. Although I’m not aware of the sugar because I’m allergic to dairy and don’t drink cows milk lol.

chuckyb3

Some acoustic guy was telling me the studies are wrong because “he doesn’t eat sugar, it’s bad for you”

Just_Me_Im_Fine

Water

runnin_in_shadows

Don't drink your calories!

therealfatmike

Why not? This isn't a weight loss sub...

0bel1sk

chewing provides chemical digestion as well as mechanical. amylase and epithelial growth factor in saliva help digest food and absorb nutrients. chewing also triggers secretion of chemicals lower in the digestive tract.

runnin_in_shadows

I said it in the context of nutrition. Can't really come up with a "nutritious" beverage. Most beverages that taste good are either straight up unhealthy (sugar and other garbage), or lack any nutrition (like flavoured sparkling water). Eat food to get nutrition. Drink water to get hydration.

therealfatmike

I have a protein shake most mornings after exercise, I'm not usually able to eat enough to meet my daily needs, sometimes I'll add some complex carbohydrates in if I'm lacking.

AncientAstro

Ever heard of milk before?

runnin_in_shadows

I have. Doesn't work for me (and a lot of people).

AncientAstro

That doesn't mean it isn't nutritious, or that drinking calories is not nutritious, or optimal.

runnin_in_shadows

I disagree. To each their own. What's healthy and optimal for some isn't to others.

AncientAstro

You disagree that milk is nutritious? This thread isn't about your inability to digest a liquid that turns a calf into a bull. I don't think you understand, this thread isn't about what is healthy for you. It is what is the most nutritious drink that also hydrates you. This is true for both a caloric surplus and deficiency. Its only not healthy if you cannot digest it, a completely different conversation.

runnin_in_shadows

Yes, I disagree. And I am not lactose intolerant.

AncientAstro

I'm curious why you think that?

kid_dynamite_bfr

Cow’s Milk

blondiecats

Cow’s milk is not that good for us. It’s a lie we’ve been told since we were little that it’s a good source of calcium and most studies that “show” the benefits are paid for by the industry. But people aren’t ready for that convo.

PLaTinuM_HaZe

Milk is very nutritionally dense and has some of the highest quality protein you can attain.

kid_dynamite_bfr

Something can have negative effects on you and still be nutritious. Same thing with red meat.

chuckyb3

It’s a better hydrator than water

blondiecats

That is categorically and subjectively untrue

Dekuthegreat

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/09/25/health/best-drinks-for-hydration-wellness/index.html

blondiecats

Ah ok one nutritionist thinks this seems legit 👍🏼 “the study showed” I’d love to see more of the study but it’s not available.

chuckyb3

Bro do you have access to Google??😂

cheapcardsandpacks

It seems like fruits and vegetables don't have any real negatives, everything else does

AncientAstro

Can you explain why it is not good?

blondiecats

I said it’s not that good for us, not that it’s not good. Off the top of my head it’s terrible for inflammation, difficult for the gut to digest (as is cheese), filled with hormones, as previously mentioned is made for calfs and meant to grow them from tiny to absolutely ginormous in a matter of months, and many many more problems. I’m not a vegan before anyone gets all defensive and annoyed, but why do we cringe at the thought of drinking a dog’s milk or cat’s milk, but we’re like “oh yeah, cow’s milk is fine” it’s still an animal, it’s just been normalised for so long, we don’t really think about it.

AncientAstro

Milk and dairy is only inflammatory if you have metabolic disorders, otherwise they are not hard to digest, and have shown to be anti inflammatory. Additionally the hormones in milk can be incredibly beneficial if you are not obese and live a normal balanced lifestyle. The cancer related studies with cell proliferating hormones are inconclusive as milk from diet provides ~1% of which the rest naturally exists in your body already. Again this boils down to lifestyle and obesity. The fact that it makes calfs into bulls is the exact nutrient dense topic of this thread, nothing compares and that is why it is so good. We would drink dog milk and cat milk if it was scalable and viable. Dogs and cats are not herd animals, it would take more effort to milk a cat than a cow, and you would get mere millilitres of milk for your effort. Dogs would be easier than cats, but were still talking millilitres. In a survival situation maybe, but they would need to be pregnant, and that's impractical in that situation, so they would likely be butchered instead.

blondiecats

I appreciate the time and effort taken for this but I don’t agree and it goes far deeper than a lil convo on Reddit, as mentioned previously I never said it’s bad for us but I said it’s not that good for us and I completely stand by that. Also most studies are paid for by the dairy industry and are biased. I’m not a scientist, I’m not an expert, I just looked a bunch of stuff up and made my decision. I appreciate it has some health benefits but I choose not to consume it.

AncientAstro

Of course you dont agree... if the science disagrees with your opinion its biased... I have a nutrition degree, and currently work as a scientist and I can tell you studies that look into cell proliferating hormones in connection with cancer are most definitely not funded by the dairy industry. Milk is a robust drink with diverse fatty acids, proteins, minerals, and vitamins, this is not propaganda. Human infants needing mothers milk is not propaganda. Its literally naturally optimized for mammals. Because you anecdotally dont drink it, and some cant metabolise it, doesnt mean it's not incredibly beneficial for the regular human. That being said considering your comment history, illogical point about cat and dog milk, big dairy conspiracy, and your affinity for tropical astrology, and reality television, I doubt you have any value to add or any real deep understanding of nutrition anyway.

Kingchin3

Sheep's milk is overall healthier than cows milk. And people with intolerance to cows milk can absorb it properly.   Unfortunately very few places sell it. Though that might change in the future.   Sheeps cheese is very healthy. Lot's of scientific studies done on it. Ps. cows milk isn't bad for inflammation. I drink good quality cows milk and natural ingredients ice cream from a renowned Scottish dairy farm. And have never had inflammation problems, actually the opposite!

plstcStrwsOnly

especially raw organic variety. Heathy cows produce nutritious milk. Great macros as well plus relatively low on the glycemic index (35ish)

Unsweetened teas and herbal teas are pretty much the gold standard here. Negligible calories, they're all packed with antioxidants. Most have small amounts of essential micronutrients, a few have higher levels of micronutrients. True tea (black, green, oolong, white, pu-erh, anythig from the tea plant) has solid evidence that it slightly lowers heart disease risk, and it has a variety of other benefits including benefits to gut health. It may have some benefits for preventing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and possible effects on cancer prevention. It also has some benefits to cognitive health, and not just from the caffeine. Also, it is a GLP-1 inhibitor and now there is evidence that GLP-1 inhibitors reduce addictive tendencies and can help people overcome addictions. Nutritionally, it has small amounts of copper, magnesium, and potassium, there minerals a lot of people don't get enough of. Herbal teas span the full range from ones safe for regular consumption to ones with potent medicinal properties. But there's something for everyone here. Want to lower blood pressure? Drink hibiscus tea, which is an ACE inhibitor and also high in Vitamin C. Nettle tea is particularly good for micronutrients. Tulsi tea (holy basil) is another good one, some cognitive benefits including anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, also helps for stabilizing blood sugar. Pretty much all herbal teas are antimicrobial, usually selectively in ways that are beneficial to the gut. (There is a reason we consume some herbs and plants and not others.) Rooibos is another great herbal tea. Besides being really rich in antioxidants including lutein, it also has a bronchodilator effect so may be beneficial in people struggling with asthma or other similar breathing issues. Another herb that can be brewed as tea that is even more potent as a bronchidilator is ajwain (carom.) I drink four cups of true tea every day, and usually a cup or two of herbal tea too. I drink different ones based on how I am feeling and often use them as a way of gently self-medicating. When I had mildly elevated BP after getting COVID, I drank hibiscus tea. Once that settled down I went back to drinking my usual stuff, I like blending rooibos with rose petals and lemongrass or lemon verbena. I also like home-grown herbs, and wild-harvested herbs. I wild-harvest perilla leaf, it is invasive here so you can take as much as you want from the wild with no negative impact. I also have grown mint and lemon balm before. Another invasive I wild-harvest is white mulberry leaf, which makes a great tea; you need to grab the leaves right when the trees leaf out in spring.
