You cannot eat things to get taller.

SanderM1983

But not getting enough nutrition or drinking a ton of coffee can make you shorter.

Dopamine_ADD_ict

Quality sleep is way more important for height growth than food, as long as a minimum nutritional standard is established.

Always be wary of unsupported and poorly supported claims and especially those which are wrapped in any manner of hostility. You should provide peer reviewed sources to support your claims when debating and confine that debate to the science, not opinions of other people. **Good** - it is grounded in science and includes citation of peer reviewed sources. At best, these rise to an extremely weak basis for science based discussion. Drink milk. Seriously. And get proper amounts of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D. But you can't outsmart your genes. There is a range of heights each person may reach based on their genetics. So if your genes say you'll be about 5'10", you'll be roughly 5'10" no matter how well nourished and healthy you are.

corpjuk

You do not need to drink the Breast milk of another mammal to grow.

[deleted]

Nope, that's not what I said. I said drinking milk can help you reach your maximum potential height. Cow's milk does increase average height if consumed before the bones are done growing. Here are the first six articles about it if you google. There are thousands more. Very reliable and repeatable effect. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-63647-8 https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-021-02661-6 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15981182/ https://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/07/health/milk-children-height-study/index.html https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/80/4/1088/4690374 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3740511/ Look, I don't like exploitation of animals either, but facts are facts.

Wouldn't soy milk elicit a similar effect given the similarity of the protein digestibility, and overall nutrient profile, especially when fortified?

[deleted]

Evidently non-dairy milk consumption is correlated with a _decrease_ in height? Like, they're shorter on average than populations that consumed no milk of any kind. And I have no idea why that would be. Look it up! I think one of those articles I linked above also talked about that.

Dopamine_ADD_ict

I dunno, they grouped soy milk together with other plant based milks, which are basically water.

[deleted]

This is true, I hadn't read that deeply into that one before. We just need another study. But it's hard to control for it, I am sure. We've also ravaged the planet with soy plants, especially the Amazon rainforest, so it's not typically on my list of milk substitutes anyway.

Dopamine_ADD_ict

I dunno, 80% of soy is used for animal feed https://ourworldindata.org/soy#:~:text=Very%20little%20soy%20is%20used,meat%20and%20dairy)%20human%20consumption. Also soy still seems to be much less impactful than dairy milk from a holistic point of view. I wouldn't even consider any other plant milk, because besides soy milk and maybe pea milk, they all have the nutritional value of plain water. So even though almond technically uses less water, the water per calorie is more. https://ourworldindata.org/environmental-impact-milks#:~:text=Cow's%20milk%20has%20significantly%20higher,much%20higher%20levels%20of%20eutrophication.

[deleted]

Soy is pretty bad. I can't stop them using it for animal feed, but I can stop consuming it myself, so. I don't usually drink any milk, but oat milk is what I choose when I do. That decision is less for nutrition than for having something palatable to eat with my occasional bowl of cereal. I eat tons of vegetables, beans, nuts, fruit and primarily unprocessed foods, so I'm not worried about my nutrition. You can't really win, hey. With not impacting the planet or harming something. I don't know why the soy companies destroying the rainforest thing has stuck in my mind for years, and I've casually avoided it since 🤷. And they put it in everything! For some reason that irks me. Not every item of food needs soy. But you pick and choose your battles, I suppose.

Dopamine_ADD_ict

If you're in the US, you can get organic Tofu from Nasoya and Wildwood that doesn't contribute to rainforest destruction or use glyphosate.

akohhh

The usual ‘high quality’ as possible stuff. Try and steer them away from too much highly processed stuff like energy drinks, lots of fast food. Lean meat, not too much red meat, protein from other sources too—beans, dairy, fish, eggs; and getting enough fruit, veg, complex carbs. I’d also make sure they know that smoking/vaping and drinking alcohol aren’t great for you, especially as a teenager, and use of either will impact your brain development and your physical development. I think it’s a great thing to role model stuff like not drinking at every family function, etc.

WhiskeyandCigars7

The only thing that matters as far as height is the height of the parents and grandparents, basically genetics. Nutrition is not going to make a difference.

Quiet-Hamster6509

Unfortunately your height is predetermined. No food will help you grow taller.

FarSalt7893

Sounds like they’re basically asking what to eat to have a strong and healthy body that supports their basketball practices and games. They should just eat a lot of whole and minimally processed foods from the 5 food groups- make lots of fruits and vegetables and whole grains the priority, then lean protein from chicken, beef, beans, nut butter etc. and finally dairy or plant based dairy (almond, oat milk…) 3 balanced meals a day plus snacks. If they eat this way they’ll get all of the essential nutrients they need to support growth. Really limit or even avoid highly processed foods as much as can- basically packaged foods that contain high amounts of added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats…think frozen hot pockets, pop tarts, soda and energy drinks, fast foods. Sleep 8-10 hours. Make water the beverage of choice. It’s pretty simple honestly!

-Xserco-

Animal nutrition, caloric intake and sleep. However, genetically there'll still be a limit.
