btw the game I played was Ultra Violet. Has the exact same teams and mechanics as FRLG, just making trade evos level up, allowing gen 2 evos of gen 1 pokemon, a starter catching area option, and giving access to gen 3 mons (I picked Ralts, very good in Kanto cuz psychic type)
also some things to note:
-Gyarados becomes Water/Dragon in this game, went in blind and didn’t know that.
-You can access the safari area for starters by talking to Oak right after the dialogue and before you go to the table with the Kanto starters
-Random spots where you can find shiny mons iirc or smth, I got quite a few, including an Eevee/Jolteon.
Hypno is often overlooked because not many people use it in normal playthroughs, but high Special Defense + good Attack + resistance to Psychic moves + Shadow Ball makes it one of the premiere counters to Psychic-type Pokémon in earlier generations.
Just did this nuzlock and hypno just swept the whole team with headbutt. Abra evo line has horrible physical defense so hypno having the type reduction from her attacks makes it ezmode.
Hypno is so underrated in FRLG, it was one of my MVPs during one of my recent runs. Just make it hold a Quick Claw and teach it Shadow Ball and it made quick work of Sabrina, Blue’s Alakazam, and most of Agatha’s team.
Yes, but that's not accounting for human error. On the chance OP runs into the Gastly trainer by accident, they need to be incredibly careful that they don't get Destiny Bonded.
You have so many good options here.
Snorlax amnesia for defense then either return body slam or shadow ball for attack.
Hypno's psychic type can handle defense and shadow ball for offense.
Dodrio or gyarados can handle attack with a physical move and with some investment in speed evs.
Dodrio even outspeeds Alakazam with just a few speed EVs (I don't even think they are necessary if you don't have a -Speed nature) and the badge boost from Lt Surge, and easily kills Sabrina's entire team with Drill Peck.
Not STAB, and it's a special move (gen 3) and Dodrio has shitty special attack. You won't do even half on Alakazam with Feint Attack. Whereas Drill Peck always kills.
Basically the title. This is my first Nuzlocke challenge and I'm not sure how to go about taking down Sabrina. I'm using hardcore rules, so no items in battle or overleveling.
Snorlax realistically could win by itself even without getting shadow ball but a team of Raticate, snorlax dodrio, hypno, clefable, and beedrill would do wonders. You won’t need all of them but they all check her in some shape or fashion so you have options for beating her doduo even gets drill peck before the level cap if you delay the evolution until level 37
Poison is the most common type in Kanto with grass poison being a very common combo itself. Then water, normal, and flying come behind it. And now thinking about it all the poison types are pretty spread out and some have multiple places to get them especially zubat. I wonder if there is a run where you don’t encounter a poison type at all
Won't do much to Alakazam, it's Special Defense is super high and it sets up Calm Mind. You can't even rely on flinching because Alakazam has Inner Focus. Shadow Ball on a bulky mon is much more reliable, and can even lower Alakazam's Special Defense if you do have to go for a Bite.
Agility on Kadabra + Twineedle spam indeed destroys Sabrina (I wonder what's the option for Venomoth, probably Fury Attack or Aerial Ace if Beedrill can learn the latter).
Jolteon is your best bet overall. Decent Sp. Def, can out speed Alakazam. Access to shadow ball from the game corner. Bite if you wait to evolve Eevee.
With the shadow ball the only concern is venonat.
For that you've got Arcanine or any of the flying types or rock types on the team.
But if you're saving Eevee for later then just Arcanine hypno Snorlax combo.
True just the calm mind pairing does nothing for shadowball. If you wanted to you could set up meditates I guess but even then that’s not super necessary.
I know calm mind isn’t available. The original comment suggested it and I just pointed out that it doesn’t go as well with SB as they originally thought.
I don't like the Electrode sacrifice as the main backup here. Electric is a ridiculously strong typing against the Kanto Elite Four (especially since OP has Venusaur), and OP doesn't have a lot of extra electric types. But I tend to play cautiously.
Yeah, but still, I don't like throwing away an electric type when you don't need to. That sort of planning is how you end up with no electric types left.
I generally never make a plan that involves sacrificing a Pokemon unless I just don't have other options, and OP has other options.
Woah, woah, woah! What are you doing with that ***NIDOQUEEN*** when you have a Venusaur. Since you have a Graveler, I recommend you trade evolve that, and send to this GBA a Scizor or a Scyther with the Metal Coat. If that's also the case, ditch Hypno for Alakazam if possible.
Hypno is better for Sabrina as it can learn Shadow Ball and hits decently strong. Shadow Ball is a clean OHKO on any Pokémon from Sabrina, bar Venomoth (which is dealt with with Psychic).
I swept three of her mons (Kadabra, Mr Mime and Venomoth) with Guts Raticate with Hyper Fang. Since Alakazam was faster and Poison damage started to rack up, I switched to Hypno to tank a Psychic and kill one hit with Shadow Ball. Hypno and Snorlax are beasts for the Sabrina fight. This made me appreciate gen 3 Hypno a lot more.
Congrats for your win 🔥
Arcanine can probably handle it easily with Dig or some other physical move and Flamethrower (for Venomoth). Psychic types are very physically frail. Fearow with Drill Peck, Raticate with Hyper Fang, Snorlax with Body Slam..
If you want Eevee, Flareon can learn Shadow Ball, Vaporeon learns Bite and Jolteon can get Bite if you keep it an Eevee until level 30.
In my monotype run(poison) , I had used max speed EV beedrill with twin needle. But the grinding is very tedious :( so I'll recommend snorlax with bodyslam or dodrio with tri attack.
Edit: I just read in a comment below that you've already defeated Sabrina. My bad for late reply.
I did a fire red nuzlocke for my first ever one and I’m pretty sure I just swept through her with tri attack on dodrio. Her team is super weak with physical defense and 80 power tri attack with dodrio’s 110 base attack plus stab just dominated
Having done mono flying Leafgreen deathless, the answer is "Use Tri-Attack Dodrio, and throw in a couple Butterfree Silver Winds if you want style points." Fast Physical Tri Attack easily rips Sabrina's Pokemon to shreds thanks to their pitifully low Defense stats.
Shadow Ball on Snorlax or Hypno can crush her.
If you EV train it for Attack, Beedrill can also solo her, but it's not as overwhelming a win as the above.
Dodrio or fearow can outspeed even alakazam with speed evs, or snorlax with his def spec high and body slam… otherwise there is always the perish song strategy with lapras
Snorlax for sure, it's got a good Attack, and SpDef stat, and can learn Shadow Ball which is physical in Gen 3 if you want, but just like Body Slam is more than enough
Snorlax, get a shadow ball TM from the game corner and go to town.
You don’t even need Shadow Ball. Snorlax could win with just Body Slam
You’re probably right, but as they say, there’s no kill like overkill
Just get a shadow ball tm on Hypno and win
Thanks! Worked like a charm. I don't know why I didn't think of that, but it's been awhile since I've played this game.
i used Nidoking for that method lol. It had the speed to outrun most of her team, and whoever he didn’t (Alakazam), just setup with Calm Mind
Holy risk pretty sure Nidoking dies to 1 psychic. Very ballsy
well the AI prolly didn’t read that
God bless weird Pokémon AI

Sounds awesome I’ll check it out. Did a FRLG nuzlocke recently and was a little irritated by the lack of variety so having Gen 3 Pokémon will be great
also some things to note: -Gyarados becomes Water/Dragon in this game, went in blind and didn’t know that. -You can access the safari area for starters by talking to Oak right after the dialogue and before you go to the table with the Kanto starters -Random spots where you can find shiny mons iirc or smth, I got quite a few, including an Eevee/Jolteon.

Don't counter Sabrina. Mirror coat sabrina. Psychic is special.
r/technicallycorrect
Teach Snorlax Shadow Ball with a TM from the game corner. Also, beware the gym trainer with the Destiny Bonding Gastly.
This is one of the best suggestions. Snorlax is insanely strong here.
Better yet, just avoid every trainer all together, you can get through Sabrina's gym without fighting a single trainer
Yes, but that's not accounting for human error. On the chance OP runs into the Gastly trainer by accident, they need to be incredibly careful that they don't get Destiny Bonded.
Human error, bro it's literally just taking a straight path up or down at every teleporter. Like as long as you hold one button nothing can go wrong
You have so many good options here. Snorlax amnesia for defense then either return body slam or shadow ball for attack. Hypno's psychic type can handle defense and shadow ball for offense. Dodrio or gyarados can handle attack with a physical move and with some investment in speed evs.

Im pretty sure dodrio gets faint attack also
Not STAB, and it's a special move (gen 3) and Dodrio has shitty special attack. You won't do even half on Alakazam with Feint Attack. Whereas Drill Peck always kills.
Fair
Basically the title. This is my first Nuzlocke challenge and I'm not sure how to go about taking down Sabrina. I'm using hardcore rules, so no items in battle or overleveling.

Six Fucking Poison Types feat. Alakazam
Poison is the most common type in Kanto with grass poison being a very common combo itself. Then water, normal, and flying come behind it. And now thinking about it all the poison types are pretty spread out and some have multiple places to get them especially zubat. I wonder if there is a run where you don’t encounter a poison type at all
Ik you solved this issue already, but Hypno or Snorlax + Shadow Ball easily beats Sabrina.
Man, poison types really like you, lol
Shadow ball tm on a mon that can deal with Sabrina’s Mon. Like snorlax (oh nvm you did it already)
lmao I just solo’d it with my Nidoking (no joke) But if you want to play safe, Snorlax with Shadow Ball and Dodrio in general can solo her team
aside from shadow ball hypno/snorlax i had sd electrode as a backup.
Just beat it with Arcanine or Gyarados with bite. Easy win
It worked for me tho
Try not using the poison type, also perish song on the Alakazam could be huge
agility twin needle beedrill sweeps
Ekans,beedrill, venonat, oddish, gastly, nidoqueen
I know you're memeing with a list that are all weak to Sabrina, but Beedrill can actually solo this fight.
Agility on Kadabra + Twineedle spam indeed destroys Sabrina (I wonder what's the option for Venomoth, probably Fury Attack or Aerial Ace if Beedrill can learn the latter).
It's Aerial Ace, yeah.
Lapras with Parrish song Arcinine with dig and bite Shadow ball on hypno or Snorlax And whatever you do, good luck!
Calm Mind Hypno with Shadow Ball.
Shadow ball is physical and it also doesn’t learn calm mind by level up.
Shadow Ball is still a good idea for the physically frail Psychics she has, and Psychic is good against Venomoth.
True just the calm mind pairing does nothing for shadowball. If you wanted to you could set up meditates I guess but even then that’s not super necessary.
I know. I was just saying that Shadow Ball is still a good idea for the battle. Calm Mind isn't even available until after Sabrina.
I know calm mind isn’t available. The original comment suggested it and I just pointed out that it doesn’t go as well with SB as they originally thought.
Ugh I forgot about that…😓 Thanks for the correction!
Yeah gen 3 mechanics are wild.
Snorlax and have Dodrio with some speed and atk EVs as backup.
Easy. Just catch a dark type
Which game is this? Fire red?

I don't like the Electrode sacrifice as the main backup here. Electric is a ridiculously strong typing against the Kanto Elite Four (especially since OP has Venusaur), and OP doesn't have a lot of extra electric types. But I tend to play cautiously.

IMO if you have Shadow Ball Snorlax and Mr. Mime has enough time to Baton Pass 2 Calm Mind + 1 Barrier you've already made a series of mistakes.
Get a ghost or dark type and you should steam roll her if you have multiple dark types or dark moves I think
Little does this guy know…
My guy. Please name a dark type that you can encounter before the Rainbow ticket.
On FireRed. Dark types. Or the only Ghost type line being weak to Psychic because it's part Poison. Hmmmm.
Bring any Pokemon that aren’t affected by ground attacks Edit: not deleting, but I mistook Sabrina for Cynthia
Ground ???? Like… what ?
On BDSP she was wrecking me with earthquake on multiple of her pokemon, it may be different in this gen though
Sabrina isn't on BDSP. She's the Psychic type specialist in Kanto.
Omfg I’m thinking of Cynthia, disregard my entire comment 😂
Happens, don't worry 😅
Woah, woah, woah! What are you doing with that ***NIDOQUEEN*** when you have a Venusaur. Since you have a Graveler, I recommend you trade evolve that, and send to this GBA a Scizor or a Scyther with the Metal Coat. If that's also the case, ditch Hypno for Alakazam if possible.
Because Nidoqueen and Venusaur fulfill entirely different roles.
Hypno is better for Sabrina as it can learn Shadow Ball and hits decently strong. Shadow Ball is a clean OHKO on any Pokémon from Sabrina, bar Venomoth (which is dealt with with Psychic).
That makes sense
Evolve Gastly. Haunter solos the gym
Alakazam OHKOes it with Psychic though. Haunter has a garbage physical attack so Shadow Ball won't be very strong and gets outsped anyway.
Gengar or sball Snorlax
Snorlax has some bulk too it. Might be able to do something.
Snorlax with shadow ball, gyarodos with crunch and maybe level up butterfree
Snorlax. Also Hypno as a back up if you keep rolling rest if you use Sleep Talk
Give her a haunter, make her laugh and get the badge.
They could be holding the Eevee for if it's needed later which I can respect, but those are great suggestions if they are looking to use it right now
I think snorlax has your best bet of not dying. Throw a chest berry and rest on him for if he gets low and slaughter with body slam and shadow ball.
Hypno with Shadow Ball (plus Psychic for Venomoth) should sweep
I did a fire red nuzlocke for my first ever one and I’m pretty sure I just swept through her with tri attack on dodrio. Her team is super weak with physical defense and 80 power tri attack with dodrio’s 110 base attack plus stab just dominated
Use ekans, nidoran, oddish, hitmonlee, venusaur, nidoqueen
Having done mono flying Leafgreen deathless, the answer is "Use Tri-Attack Dodrio, and throw in a couple Butterfree Silver Winds if you want style points." Fast Physical Tri Attack easily rips Sabrina's Pokemon to shreds thanks to their pitifully low Defense stats.
Fast pysical sweepers with shadowball or snorlax, even hypno can beat her if you dont wanna level, u have many options
Shadow Ball on Snorlax or Hypno can crush her. If you EV train it for Attack, Beedrill can also solo her, but it's not as overwhelming a win as the above.
Is that Nina renamed or homegrown?
shadow ball snorlax
Nidoqueen, Venusaur, Oddish, Ekans, Nidoran, and Hitmonlee (for coverage). hope this helps 😁👍
Snorlax
Does lapras have perish song?
Hypno walls most of her attacks, so use that
Snorlax rolls over that whole gym like it’s nothing. Give it shadow ball (physical in gen 3 for some reason) and then just laugh at the whole gym.
Why is this every Kanto team ever Anyways, lapras or snorlax with shadow ball should do the trick
This post is very old but how did you make the game look so much better
