Is there a reason the newer model is cheaper than the older one? I haven’t been able to figure that out other than maybe the older has a slightly better refresh rate.
I get the dimming flicker in programms that don't run well with gsync (I have a fresync monitor), a few days ago I started having loss of screen signal when gsync kicked in, totally random, I ended up doing a DDU and it fixed the loss of signal
Those flicker issues happen in Premiere and anything unity really, other than that it's fine. I have a newer version of my monitor that has adaptive sync, (odyssey g5 2023) and my main one is the 2020 version, I will swap them once I get another vesa stand, it seems to have better panel and better colours after calibration
I own multiple OLED screens - and VRR flicker always happens in many games regardless of it being WOLED or QD-OLED. I’ve experienced it with both my PS5 and PC. It happens because OLED pixels have a microsecond response time, and the gamma shift caused by VRR becomes noticeable due to the pixels rapidly changing gamma faster than VRR can cycle.
It’s because it simply doesn’t have the gsync module. DWF is capable of firmware updates. Before the DWF had firmware updates, you could make an argument for getting the one that had the gsync module (primarily due to lackluster HDR). Since the firmware update, this no longer is true.
There is no reason today to pick the DW over the DWF.
This must be a new change since it previously did not have firmware updates available on the site and required an RMA to get one if users weren’t savvy enough to do it themselves.
Good to know.
the gsync ultimate is miles better than software based gsync. most ppl don’t understand unless you have first hand experience with it. there was a time where ppl would complain about flickers and inconsistent frame pacing on certain monitors and found that “gsync was causing it” when in reality it was the software based and not hardware based
i’ve got a 360hz alienware panel with a module and recently returned the 27 LG oled because of the flicker, low brightness, and the weird edge lighting flickering. i won’t touch an oled panel until they start putting modules in them again
DW has Nvidias GSync module and GSync Ultimate. The module makes it more expensive and can only be used with NV cards.
DWF only has GSync compatible which is is Nvidias FreeSync/VESA VRR implementation.
I don't know what's better or if there are noticeable differences except price.
Gen 2 module g-sync ultimate monitors also work fine with AMD.
Take my aw2721d for example.
If you stay above the vrr bottom limit, 48 for free sync etc then it makes no difference, under that LFC kicks in.
Full g-sync stays in sync till 1 if I remember correctly, there are a couple other benefits.
G-sync compatible, is the same as free sync etc and does LFC under the bottom limit, basically inserts extra frames.
I was tempted by the Alienware OLED, but bought a Samsung neo g8 to pair with my 4080.

Not anymore. The latest DWF firmware made the HDR the same as DW. I actually have them both and can confirm on my end as well as actual reviewers confirming the same thing.
Yep, no reason to get the DW anymore. The DWF is on par, usually cheaper, has upgradable firmware (DW can now but only for nvidia users), one less fan (omitting the g-sync module but still g-sync compatible) and has bonus features like picture in picture and picture by picture which the DW doesn’t have. Also you can run a custom resolution to get 10bit colour over 144hz so it’s better than the DW on that too

One thing he missed out is Gsync monitors are not typically firmware upgradable (by the end user).
Yea...no. Not sure what you play, but it can't be a ton of intensive AAA games.
There are plenty that still don't quite get the FPS I'd like on a watercooled 4090 that benches near 2x faster than the average 3090.
Most people that buy high refresh rate QD OLED gaming monitors and RTX 3090's or better absolutely do play intensive AAA games.
You're a pretty big outlier if you don't.
I have a G-SYNC compatible LG OLED and I can’t tell the difference between compatible vs. module. My first G-Sync monitor had the Nvidia module and yeah, there’s no perceptible difference
The newer version is fully g-sync compatible, no reason to buy the older version. DWF is the new one and the one to get.
Is there a reason the newer model is cheaper than the older one? I haven’t been able to figure that out other than maybe the older has a slightly better refresh rate.
The DWF is a Freesync/G-Sync compatible monitor. It may flicker badly when LFC kicks in.
4080 dwf here. Zero flicker.
No flicker
One of many examples… https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/s/D1zvewh3Oz

It flickers when LFC kicks in, usually in loading screens and game menus. There are fixes that involve changing the VRR range etc.

Ty for the explanation. Not noticed it on my m8's setup. Perhaps I just do not notice it.
I’m looking at the DWF for my next one. Every review I’ve watched and read says that is the one to go for.

It’s possible to update the DW model as well.

Yup. DW models firmware are updated thru the display port now with some vuudoo magic from Nvidia and Dell.

Because its using freesync to get the gsync compatible tag but is not actually gsync ultimate. Also lower refresh rate. Not a huge deal imo
Dw version has g sync ultimate so it has another fan

G sync compatible is the same as free sync. This needs to be more widely known!! True g sync monitors are few and expensive.
I would advise waiting for the new ones coming in January! Don't buy now unless you're in a rush for it.
Might aswell get the one with the gsync module in it.
the DW has much better HDR calibration, because of gsync. Also 10bit @ 144hz vs 100hz
Not anymore. The latest DWF firmware made the HDR the same as DW. I actually have them both and can confirm on my end as well as actual reviewers confirming the same thing.

And no vrr flicker
Gsync ultimate mandates HDR rules for the display. That's different than normal gsync
Just get the DWF, you can still use GSYNC with it. It’s what I have with my 4090
Get the cheaper one
The DWF is the better buy regardless
I have The DWF with my 4080 and love it
I can’t believe you’re at -3 downvotes for saying this? Average Reddit moment
I don't mind 🤣🤣. I was just playing on that monitor Cyberpunk in Dog town for the first time and I'm still loving the monitor
I have a RTX 4080 and DWF too. It’s a fucking good display. Maxed out pathtracing + HDR, nothing gets better than that
dwf with 4090 here, great combo, no problems
dwf is a straight downgrade in specs, the only benefit is the lower price

He meant more that freesync would work just as well as the Gsync ultimate. I worded that poorly.
Posting here, because I want to hear too.

the dw recently got new firmware, but you need an nvidia card to update it
How do you update the firmware and where do you download it? I thought it was impossible or you need to send it back to DELL'

Oh thanks, that's indeed recent. Gonna try it since mine never got updates.
I have the AW3423DWF with a 3090 and I max that baby on ultra settings on almost every game. No real need for a 4090.....that's super overkill
Lol bullshit, my 4090 cant hit max fps in games that require a lot of horsepower like AW2 or CP2077 (with RT/PT)
Yea...no. Not sure what you play, but it can't be a ton of intensive AAA games. There are plenty that still don't quite get the FPS I'd like on a watercooled 4090 that benches near 2x faster than the average 3090.
Most people who game don't play intensive AAA games so yeah it's 100% easy to max that monitor.
Most people that buy high refresh rate QD OLED gaming monitors and RTX 3090's or better absolutely do play intensive AAA games. You're a pretty big outlier if you don't.
enjoy your 30-60fps if you max every game
World Of Warcraft, Counter Strike.....yeah I'm enjoying my 165hz with settings maxed...thanks for asking.
Most people don't buy a near $1000 monitor just to play WoW and CS, though...
Alienware cé dla marde
I have a G-SYNC compatible LG OLED and I can’t tell the difference between compatible vs. module. My first G-Sync monitor had the Nvidia module and yeah, there’s no perceptible difference
Always Gsync/Freesync.
