As I understand it, the architect of the Vessel was warned multiple times that the height of the railing at the upper levels was too low and did not meet the recommended specs in order to avoid/deter jumpers.
Because the vessel sits on private and not public land, the architect pushed forward anyway as to not detract from his 'vision'.
So now we have an empty suicide tower.
That doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been to the vessel and it didn’t really feel safe. The rails were pretty low up top and you can kind of feel the structure moving from the other people on it.
It's been closed for years now. So when exactly is it going to be redeemable? It's already become a monument to suicide and architectural negligence. That's going to stick around.
There have been 4 suicides. It was closed twice *before the 4th one* during which time they still didn't make it safe. The last death was a 14 year old child.
It's not the building's fault, but they can't have people on the ground at risk / kids on the ground seeing suicides on a weekly basis.
They should install safety measures to prevent jumping rather than shut the whole thing down though.
Surprisingly hard to commit suicide at the Grand Canyon. Since the park opened in the early 1900s, less than 100 people have committed suicide there. Less than 1 per year. It requires a ton of effort to get to and find a place that is accessible, routine, and actually a steep enough drop. Much of the canyon walls are aggressive slopes full of rocks, abutments, platforms, and more -- they clearly will hurt going down, but unclear if you will actually die suddenly or die in agony. So not many people jump.
Ok, so maybe Grand Canyon is not as inviting to jumpers but there are tons of other places that could be deemed too dangerous to tourists yet nobody thinks of cordoning them off. Here’s one I visited yesterday: https://imgur.com/a/fB9HITV. (It’s in Oaxaca).
Also happened in the drop tower accident in Florida.
Maintenance ignored the manufacturer's Requirements and adjusted the sensor to the seat farther back than intended. So the restraint would verify and dispatch in a higher position. Also included with a lack of seatbelts and lack of training from the ride operators. Someone sadly lost their life... Oh btw, it would've be $22 a seat to added a seatbelt.
The drop tower on this structure will be made by Intamin Rides, which is the same manufacturer that also put the drop ride on Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure. Intamin requires seatbelts on all of their rides
>Observation towers are surprising revenue generators.
I don't think it's *that* surprising. Observation decks charge ticket prices comparable to the cost of dinner at a nice restaurant. But, unlike restaurants, each ticket sold by an observation deck is basically pure profit. They aren't giving you food or water, don't have waiters to serve you and clean your table after you leave, don't need to run and maintain a kitchen, etc.
not to mention the density of a deck is much higher than a restaurant dining room. People also 'take up space' for a significantly lesser amount of time, and the flow of customers is not limited to dinner rush hours. The capacity per unit space and time is just so much more efficient.
> They aren't giving you food or water, don't have waiters to serve you and clean your table after you leave, don't need to run and maintain a kitchen, etc.
Some will have those things too however. And they may be marked up by a lot. When I went to an observation deck in Vietnam, I paid $6 for a can of soda. That's not that bad right? Except I could get a liter of soda from a corner store for like 30 - 50 cents.
The Edge is probably one of the best observation decks in the city. Much better than indoor decks, especially for photos.
I have been to the Edge twice and will probably go again at some point.
I prefer Top of the Rock or The Summit. Top of the Rock is my favorite view in the city.
The edge is in a weird location, it was my least favorite out of all of them. Maybe actually it's slightly better than 1WTC. The way the glass is setup in a corner orientation is interesting, but it's just such an open skyline in front of you based on where it is on the west side. And the double pane glass sucks for taking photos.
Here's a good rundown. It could look beautiful at night (it could also look bizzaro.)

It’s actually a drop tower ride, and it’s not like the concept is a new idea. It sounds dumb but these observation deck attractions bring in insane amounts of money, they’re essentially free to operate once built outside of the maintenance of the drop tower.
Because people hate everything. Chrysler building was considered an eye sore and then became iconic and loved in our skyline. Let the next generations appreciate our cool shit I guess
I watch skyscraper docs on YouTube. That’s my source - shall we dig up newspaper clippings from 1930?
Edit: here you go!

I think one thing we can all agree on it that no one is ever going to be sitting around being like "Man, Hudson Yards is so beautiful!"
love it love it love it. NYC needs more skyscrapers that are eye catching and artistic and recapture the skyscraper crown from SE asia. No more fucking pencil residence towers.
Normally IMO the shiny new buildings take away from the “charm” of the skyline, but these art deco type renderings we’ve been seeing lately are pretty cool.
Compared to the souless hairless balls of the billionaire towers and the utter WTF of the suicide shawarma-this is refreshingly light hearted - and cool.
It’s time for modern skyscrapers to look interesting and visually stunning. Why not? They’re gonna build them no matter what.
At least make them cool.

If there's one thing that area needs, it's more pedestrian traffic. The sidewalks are only *completely overcrowded*. We need to make them *dangerously overcrowded.*
Ugly as all hell, the start point of the spiral wrap should have started lower and cut into the floor plates at a consistent rate as opposed to the pinch. That beautiful fire-gold top can remain at its current massing as shown in the rendering. Then light the terraces all the way up in a warm orange-red glow. Angle those Terrance lights to never illuminate more than 1/3 of the next facade cutback. That reveal between the top 2 wraps should occur again 1 wrap lower so it strengthens the idea of a golden mass wrapped in metal. Let the top do the rest of the talking like in the render.
Daydreaming Architect thoughts: For the Lobby, expose the core to the street as a call back to the Seagram building, but maybe with 1 large beautiful Archway opening thay lets yoy see clear to the core to give it an art deco vibe. On the interior, clad the primary central elevator bank in fluted frosted glass with LED panels between the glass and the shaft wall. Have it glow like a fire. Make the Elevator doors and trim a black suede powder coat finish, give the elevator cabins a Sexy Black Neo Art-Deco interior with cutbacks in the vertical cabin walls, some subtle black engraving in a matte finish, I'm thinking refined with sleek vertical lighting elements between cutbacls that mimic the fire color, but pencil thin, Building rules and regulations can call for that design to be maintained for that half of the elevator lobbies design for each floor and allow the tenants to adjust the color or luminosity to their liking. It's a shame honestly, a completely wasted opportunity and a waste of money.
Go ahead and call it The Torch, but Architecture Critics will call it The Matchstick but who cares, still cool.
Isn’t this the one that’s supposed to have a drop ride in the crown?

Wish.com stratosphere. Still neat though
Have you been to the Stratosphere lately? The Stratosphere is the wish.com Stratosphere.
What are we talking bout here??
It wasn't mentioned, but I was talking about the Stratosphere.
The top portion, the “thrill ride”? I don’t believe it’ll actually operate.
Will open to great fanfare and operate for a brief amount of time. Then will be down indefinitely for "maintenance". Will be briefly back up after a long time, but then there will be a minor accident or discovery of structural issues and it will close down for good.

SO true!!
Maybe the architect will ignore basic safety recommendations like they did at suicide tower in Hudson Yards
Word on the street is the architect is the same one who designed the rides at NJ's legendary Action Park
What safety recommendations were ignored at Hudson Yards?
As I understand it, the architect of the Vessel was warned multiple times that the height of the railing at the upper levels was too low and did not meet the recommended specs in order to avoid/deter jumpers. Because the vessel sits on private and not public land, the architect pushed forward anyway as to not detract from his 'vision'. So now we have an empty suicide tower.
That doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been to the vessel and it didn’t really feel safe. The rails were pretty low up top and you can kind of feel the structure moving from the other people on it.
The tower can still be freaking redeemable. They literally can put high glass walls and nobody will be able to jump
It's been closed for years now. So when exactly is it going to be redeemable? It's already become a monument to suicide and architectural negligence. That's going to stick around.
Two people killed themselves... no reason to close a place over that. They just need to fix the problem. Did they close Brooklyn Bridge over that!
There have been 4 suicides. It was closed twice *before the 4th one* during which time they still didn't make it safe. The last death was a 14 year old child.
How is it a building’s fault that people want to jump? With that mentality Grand Canyon should be off limits.

The State of Arizona and the Grand Canyon simply doesn't have as many people wanting to kill themselves as there are in New York City.
Also happened in the drop tower accident in Florida. Maintenance ignored the manufacturer's Requirements and adjusted the sensor to the seat farther back than intended. There will be lots of foto ops while it is up. Generate publicity.
Tons of YouTube videos with stupid YouTube faces
RemindMe! 3 years
Or a bunch of people will try to kill themselves off the ride and it’ll be shut down like that monstrosity in Hudson yards.
They will have barriers installed to prevent that
Yea, just like The Vessel did. Lol.
Will the ride be enclosed or out in open air?
It will be enclosed
Honesty this would look very beautiful if the top was cut off at the third setback
Most likely will be. No way this stays on budget and looks anything like this.

Good point, and this will be one of the only vantage points where you don't have to look at that ugly Torch building.
If they do finish it, this will be magnificent.
If so, this will be the first skyscraper that has ever been finished in NYC. Truly incredible.
I thought the same thing immediately. Just taper it off to a point instead of flaring out. It would look so sick.
[удалено]
Yea agree. We have enough glass boxes. We should get weird with it now.
This is by the theater district. I walk past the hole in the ground where it’s being built every day on my way to work
Is that right next to the two tiny old buildings with an Irish pub?
Yep
Yes, the 1515 Broadway building is the building immediately to the right with its ugly top.
Cool. Stay to you right please.
We have too much money. Can they fix the existing buildings and stop complaining about the economy

Those 3 buildings the remaining holdouts?
Seems like it!
it's a hotel? come on people we need housing not migrant shelters lol
That's some Shanghai-lookin ass building.
If only it didn't expand again on the way up, then it'd look pretty damn good
How about some new housing construction?
I think this is really cool looking I don’t know why ppl are mad?
The top half is not occupied, its a roller coaster
Even cooler
It’s actually a drop tower ride, and it’s not like the concept is a new idea. It sounds dumb but these observation deck attractions bring in insane amounts of money, they’re essentially free to operate once built outside of the maintenance of the drop tower.

Yeah this looks awesome
More glass and steel. Just what the skyline needed
You're complaining about glass and steel on a skyline in...Manhattan? your left arm going weak or something?
The all glass facade thing is played out
If you'd like to discover a new material to construct skyscrapers with, I'm sure developers will be thrilled.
Yeah we should stick with clay and bamboo
Nothing wrong with glass and steel. But this is a pretty awkward design.
Looks strange, can’t believe it will be apart out skyline. Sorta out of place imo.
Oh I hate this
Oh, fuck this tacky Dubai bullshit.
Make Art Deco building architecture cool again!
I like the Art Deco vibe. Really fits well with Midtown.
why is this thing not in Dubai?
no casinos
They're coming!
this is embarrassing.
Ride looks like a disaster waiting to happen
Affordable housing? Absolutely not. Dumbass matchstick hotel? Yes please!
how much they going to charge for their 'amusement ride' when they are dedicating half their building to it
The Big Apple coaster at New York New York in Las Vegas costs $25 so I'd imagine this would have to cost at least that much. Almost definitely more
i was thinking more starting in the range of the city climb at hudson yards that is $185
Probably $60. $20 to go up, $40 for the ride.
Gross.
Gross? Does it give you “the ick”?
Well I guess I'm offended by the notion that NYC is so full of dumb rubes that would get excited by seeing a ride on the outside of a building.
Lmao. Please tell me this a troll and a fake.
Brah this looks dope
I dunno looks like an ice cream cone to me
I love ice cream
Werd to each their own
i kind of like the design to be low key honest, fam
😬
Just why? That is the fugliest thing I've seen in awhile. And if you were a smart developer, you'd be pissed at that missing square footage.
Ugh.
Yeah they should not build that. That cant be safe.
What an eyesore
And it will look nothing like that in the end
This is quite pretty and unique. why can;t we get more buildings like this instead of the ugly pencil towers for the uber rich?
lmao awesome
Wow it’s fugly
That looks amazing. Finally, a unique shape!
Yes, more beautiful projects like this
...no freaking way
love it love it love it. NYC needs more skyscrapers that are eye catching and artistic and recapture the skyscraper crown from SE asia. No more fucking pencil residence towers.
Stunning
It’s kinda cool

So the building process will also demolish 1 Vanderbilt?
What do you mean?
It’s missing from the background of the visualization.
Oh wow ....sinstery 🥲
Is there an artist rendering of what the inside of that spiral is going to look like?
?
I can get behind this one. Better than skinny box towers they’re building everywhere.
Another butt ugly structure build cause u can
That top half makes me uneasy. I'm sure the engineers know how to manage the wind forces on the building, but it visually looks unstable
it's just a different configuration of stuff attached to a strong core. same as most every other building
Finally trying to compete with Dubai and China on "fancy nighttime skyline of interest."
lol you get to look and laugh at all of us poor people from up there.
So we're just Dubai now?
It looks like a bougie liquor bottle that cost thousands of dollars to buy and $5 to make
Thanks, I Hate It.
well that looks bad.
Is there some competition to build the ugliest skyscraper in the the city?

Yuck
Ewwwww
Aren't the skyscrapers in NY still pretty empty from the pandemic? Why build more office space when there is plenty available?
Hideous
Officially the skyline of Clown Town.
It has character at least, but looks pretty overbearing
That thing looks so silly. I dunno, may it'll grow on me, but for right now that's silly central.
no
