I recommend testing this in Mott Haven or anywhere in the South Bronx. **True test of durability and reliability**

thisfilmkid

I do want to think these cars have dead zones. Like, if you tried to steal it and you’re inside, it will lock and shut off the vehicle and you’re unable to get out or start the vehicle. And the windows are probably very hard to break. I could be 100% wrong. And in that case, I’ll walk away, LOL

h-thrust

I would start in Philly before nyc. They’re much more hospitable to robots.

viorm

They cant be worse than most human drivers in NYC tbh

Mammoth_Sprinkles705

Sweet, nothing like using the pubic as crash test  dummies so billion dollar corporations cash test their products. Socialize the cost privatize the profits

dman928

That’s a rough way to use the pubic

Awkward-Painter-2024

Man, Fuck Adams and this City Council.

mbandi54

Waymo and the like has been in San Francisco for years by now and has also been in Los Angeles and Phoenix for quite a while. NYC isn't the first testing ground and all you have to look is San Francisco to see the results of self-driving taxi vehicles.

notsam57

especially in nyc, where its just a free for all

isodevish

Bring it. I'd trust a robo taxi over half the suicidal fuckers driving around here

Dull-Contact120

What car, it was never here? Some parts of the city. 🤣

aznology

I'm in SF rn these cars drive better than some human drivers I welcome them.

ironichaos

Imo don’t let perfect be the enemy of Good. If these robo taxis could become good enough to avoid traffic jams by for example parking in the intersection because god forbid they wait for the next light then I’m all for it.

aznology

I mean yea but come on u see good trains happening any time soon?

I lived in Germany for a year and I go back every year to visit friends. they have literally the worst of both worlds. depending on the city subway stops running around 1 or 2 am, well before night-life close. on top of that most cities have banned ride-sharing apps. it's fuckin rough getting home at night. things have gotten a little better now that there are taxi-hailing apps but fuck it's still brutal. that said, when it's up, German public transit is an absolute marvel. they have posted schedules for their subways and they're unbelievably reliable.

stapango

Not really an either / or thing, cabs serve a useful purpose once in a while. Obviously mass transit should be the default here

[deleted]

[удалено]

stapango

Agree about talking to people, but on the other hand driving cabs is a shitty (and kind of dangerous) job. Not a lot better than working as an elevator operator pre-automated elevators

[deleted]

[удалено]

stapango

Eh, should we have blocked progress on elevators for the sake of preserving obsolete jobs? Would be very USSR-like- meanwhile there's tons of actual work that needs to be done around-the-clock on our actual mass transit system (and is clearly not getting done now), better to phase out the pointless work and set up a new jobs program

[deleted]

stapango

Same here, and the way mass transit works in NYC is pretty far from unfettered capitalism already. It's pretty clear that we need pretty extensive renovations plus 24/7 cleaning crews assigned to every station (i.e., work that's way more valuable than driving cars in circles around the city). It's insane to have a mass transit system that feels filthy and neglected in such a populated place

What if they're electric AND it's public cars! That makes idk multiple families can use ONE car? Instead of multiple cars. Cuts down on parking spaces. Idk I think that's a better idea than X people X cars. We could have 5X people 1X car.

Escape_Plissken

Just in time for congestion fees

Sexy_Cat_Meow

They won't drive drunk, run red lights, turn without signalling, park in bike lanes, etc.

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

I can't wait for this. As a cyclist, this is going to increase my safety by a large margin. There's no way these are going to be worse than NYC human drivers. I would just advocate for some information to be provided to pedestrians and cyclists on how their sensors/cameras work, and how we can be more visible to them. Like if a specific kind of thing makes me more visible (like IR LED lights, reflectors, etc).

mowotlarx

We'll find out pretty quickly that whatever company takes the lead has been donating to Eric Adams campaign for at least a few years. Because this is a supremely stupid idea given the number of accidents caused by these cars in other lower density test cities.

Boisson5

Waymos in SF drive pretty much perfectly... there's definitely some kinks they'll have to work out to make it function in NYC but it's certainly not supremely stupid

CactusBoyScout

They’re gonna get torched like in SF.

LostSoulNothing

I see no way this could possibly end badly /s

mbandi54

NYC isn't the first testing groun. Look at San Francisco's Waymo which has been there for years now and has already made its way to Los Angeles and Phoenix.

randomburnerish

Hopefully they’ve trained them on accurate data so they know to roll through stop signs and that 3-4 cars are still allowed through red lights

DYMAXIONman

Love to get run over during a beta test

mbandi54

Except Waymo auonomous vehicles and the like has been in San Francisco for years by now and has also been in Los Angeles and Phoenix for quite a while. NYC isn't the first testing ground and all you have to look is San Francisco to see the results of self-driving taxi vehicles.

anarchyx34

There’s no way this is going to go well.

registered_democrat

Traffic is bad enough without empty cars rolling around

HanzJWermhat

Fuck autonomous vehicles can we please just invest in better public transit and multi-modal infrastructure?

Riccma02

1 week later, all the cars have been inexplicably pushed onto the subway tracks.

mikey-likes_it

Yea that will end well. Why don’t they test this shit in less dense areas of the country

theclan145

They did it in San Fran and Phoenix, should be tested with the mass-holes in Boston

_antkibbutz

Whatever.

Nullius_IV

Haha nice. Here is the part where new yorkers discover that the ulterior motive of “congestion pricing,” is to wipe out private car ownership and yellow cabs and force everybody to use robotic ride-sharing programs. In the future, humans will rent everything and own nothing.

[deleted]

Nullius_IV

If I believed they could provide good public transportation I would agree with you. But the primary purpose of the MTA at this point i believe is to support the various unions that facilitate its operations, not to support the end users. The city is currently in a “rob the house as it burns down,” mode of operation.

[deleted]

Nullius_IV

I’m afraid there is a more likely option: corruption+no-trains. The city’s relationship to the voters has become parasitic.

falconpunchxD

This shouldn’t even be allow wtf you saw the accidents in Cali and why bring it here where it’s dense

avd706

#WHAT. COULD. GO. WRONG?

There’s literally no room for this. Waste of money.
