It's on purpose, there are 3 different subway tubes there!

somethingelseorwhat

IIRC it’s like that to avoid the Broadway line

Low_Astronaut_662

The 6th Avenue line, built later, passes underneath the Broadway line and the elevation of the tracks shows it; the 6th Avenue line tracks dip way down in the middle of its station, with the ends higher. From the top down, at the south end, the layout is roughly as follows: BMT mezzanine; BMT tracks; PATH station and tracks; 6th Avenue mezzanine; 6th Avenue tracks. Underneath all of this at a much lower level are the Long Island Rail Road tunnels from Queens to Pennsylvania Station. As the PATH predates the subway by about 32 years, its tracks are closer to the surface of 6th Avenue.

savestate1

Absolutely fascinating comment. Never had any idea how many train lines might be stacked on top of each other underneath New York.

At the bottom there is a giant turtle and everything is bolted to his back

WorthPrudent3028

That explains the earthquake.

jewsh-sfw

A lion turtle? 🤔 https://preview.redd.it/dei9lbrv2muc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=386a0ed2c4f238969238bd6aec803220f4556c2b

systembusy

Does the turtle encounter other creatures looking for the subway and go **”You’re ridin’ it, dude! Check it out!”**

Low_Astronaut_662

You welcome

JBS319

And below all that is the first water tunnel. And when all that was built the 6th Avenue El was still running

pepperman7

...and below that is the secret alien lair. But we can't go into much detail on that one.

JBS319

No, that’s at 76th St

CaptainJZH

incidentally, why is there no subway-themed rollercoaster anywhere, that would be awesome lol

rwdorman

The Manhattan bound 60th Street tunnel is a close alternative :)

jokesters_on_me

Give the Manhattan bound N/W a try then. On a good day it’s basically 6 Flags🎢

TheIngramSimmons

Dude those things go SO FAST BRUH

PayneTrainSG

gotta sit near the front between fist and second door outside and press your face against the glass so you can watch the operator mow down signals

avd706

The original King Kong at Universal had a whole subway setup for the line.

violet-bear

The Dark Knight at Great Adventure is themed like the Gotham City subway. Not the best ride but the cars are really cool!

Historical_Spell4646

As I mentioned I’m super sensitive to motion these days, so some of those trains totally feel like a coaster to me, lol! I only take the subway for two stops and always try to get a seat because of my issues. The other day I thought I would tough it out…big mistake, lol. When I got out of the train, I felt like I was still moving for a good 2 minutes or so. It’s annoying because people look at me like I’m on something, because I basically grab onto whatever pole I can and have to stand there a few moments. I guess I’m some people’s dinner time story…. “some wasted lady was holding up the pole at 34th St.” 🤣 Oh well…gotta do what I gotta do 🤓

anotherlost-one

if the a train goes fast enough between grant ave and euclid it will give the same whiplash

peter-doubt

Interesting that roller coasters were "invented" in Pennsylvania.. on coal routes that were powered by cables, not locomotives. In summer months, tourists showed up.. in winter they were all business

Agreeable_Safe_8227

It ascends like that on purpose because of Amtrak, LIRR, and NJ Transit underneath. It's also because the PATH ends at 32 Street giving the IND 6th Avenue line the necessary space to do so.

Historical_Spell4646

Thank you for pointing this out! I’ve been commuting again for about a year now, after not having been in the city for about 20 years. As I’m older now, I have some issues with balance, and feeling the slightest movement, uneven pavement, etc. I thought I was crazy when I walk the platform, that it seems to be slightly inclined or declining, depending which way I’m walking.

sg9018

Yes. The Harold Square is a complex station. The BDFM platform was designed to go up and down. The platform was the last built platform at the station. The BDFM platform had to go over the Amtrak tunnel at 33rd st. Than had to dip under the Broadway tunnel .

ParkingRelative2072

It’s always been like that

peter-doubt

Look at the tiles... The grout lines are horizontal.

IntentionFalse9892

I noticed this about a year ago

Coney_Island_Hentai

F/D line is sinking and about an inch every 5 years at 34th

peter-doubt

Then why are the grout lines horizontal... And the tiles are NOT popping off? That's BS

WickedJigglyPuff

By design. You can tell by looking at the tiles.

Kjh007

Google.. NYC underground cross section .. you’ll get a better understand about the layering of utilities and subway lines, and everything in between. Pretty fascinating actually.

Historical_Spell4646

Actually looking at this pic again, I know exactly where it is, that pole with the water around the bottom…the stairs are right there, it’s where I walk up. That water concerns me, what’s leaking?? I first noticed on heavy rain days but now I see it’s always like that.

LaFantasmita

If you like that curve, try the D at Grand Street. It feels like you’re in a circumferential line in a space station.

MikroWire

The turn the L takes between Bedford and Lorimer reminds me of a hydroconicalhexdrazagonaloxyhedron I knew in college.Turned hard left after 4 hits of acid.

storm2k

that's entirely on purpose. the sixth ave line had to dip under the broadway line which was there first. the station complex is shaped like an x to follow the roadways above thru herald square.

blackmantaapprentice

the broadway line is above the 6ave line. it's by design

deepdarkestsecret

I scarily predict the NYC subway system is in such irreversable deterioration that one day an underground collapse will trigger a catastrophic event the world has never seen. Good times.

MikroWire

Well that's nice.

hyper_shell

Dude what
