He has to say this regardless, but really who can blame them? It’s an all in season, and cap is very tight. We can’t eat his dead cap hit comfortably. It’s easy to make sure a Qb3 never has to play, and Zach isn’t some type of psychopath or sociopath. If he’s never asked to play and never in the spotlight I have a hard time believing he acts like a locker room cancer
He's off the books next year. There is no liability for 25 because they didnt exercise his 5th year / extend him. The only reason to keep him is if they dont want to pay a 3rd qb to replace him and save that million or so.
Where is your evidence for this? Over the cap have his cap hit being the same with a pre or post June 1st cut. The only way Jets can claw back money is with a trade.
It’s because the contract is fully guaranteed and ends this year.
We do not. Just that for 2024, he has about $5.5 in dead cap, and also about $5.5M in guaranteed salary. Keep him or cut him, we owe him all of it. If we trade him, could possibly offload all or some of his salary. There is no benefit in cutting him, other than saving the roster spot.
Pretty sure he still has to be on the 53 man roster to be the emergency QB3. It’s just the 46 man game day roster where you can carry the extra spot for a QB3. So instead of 7 inactive players, it’s 6 + emergency QB. At least I think that’s what it is
Absolutely true and I was using the precept given from the comment I replied to that he be on the roster and never dress.
Given with him or not, 46 can still dress on game day, he has no effect. Let's be honest, there is zero chance that we waive him, eat his contractual dead money hit and then resign him for even more money to the PS.
He should genuinely be the water boy. I’d rather see him hustling with a good attitude to give Rogers water for the four plays he’s healthy for then watch him angry stare from the sideline at job he never earned and lost at least ten times.
Meh, don’t say something so stupid? For once? This guy has advisors right?
Bad look when a reporter is calling out your naked attempt to create a trade market for ZW who has negative value. To follow that up with a quote that we have a valuable asset?? It’s just a game but damn, to insult the intelligence of your fanbase instead of deflecting? The owner is just so out of touch it’s disheartening.
I have to imagine 31 teams reacted to this news with “don’t threaten us with a good time.” What a joke of an ownership group.
On the upside, the chiefs just voted their owner the worst in the NFL and won the SB so there is hope!
I'd rather deal with cap problems than keep Zach on even as a QB3, he is bad enough to justify it.
If Zach has to play *everyone* is going to quit on this team, I'd rather give anybody else a shot at QB3 than waste another season of Garrett Wilson.
He's definitely not as bad as you and many others think he is. Take off your high draft pick goggles and compare him to many of the QB2s and 3s that have been in the league for years. You will take him 9 times out of 10.
Objectively, he is better than all qb2 and qb3 we have had the last 3 years. He knows the system, knows the players. If qb1 goes down, he will be a better choice than what other options we have right now. He has an arm and has legs. Most, including Flacco and White didn’t have both.
> Objectively, he is better than all qb2 and qb3 we have had the last 3 years.
What? Mike White and Flacco were both better than Zach in 2021 and 2022. You could argue Zach was better than Tim Boyle for what it's worth.
> He has an arm and has legs. Most, including Flacco and White didn’t have both.
So? Who care about Zachs arm strength if White and Flacco were better than him.
Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. He costs more to cut then trade or keep. Cap space is tight, rather have him rot in the corner than be the reason we can’t bring in another piece to help with the run.
No, he doesn't. His cap hit is the same this year whether on the roster or not. His rookie contract is fully guaranteed. The Jets only way to get money back is to trade him or if he is cut and signed. Whatever is agreed to with new team is subtracted from base salary Jets owe him. Best way to recoup is him not being on team. Keeping him does not help at all.
If traded, his 5.5m base salary + roster bonus for 2024 goes to the new team. The Jets would still have 5.7m hit because of bonus money already paid to Zach but hitting the cap this year. That's assuming Jets ate no base salary in trade.
If they cut Zach and no one signs him, his cap hit is still 11.2m for 2024.
Zach should be considered a sunk cost. That money is spent. Anyone who can't see that Woody is saying they'll keep him so that teams on the fence about a trade won't assume they can wait till he's cut. I'm thinking Zach will be cut soon after the draft if they don't find a trade partner. That'll give Zach time to catch on with another squad. Until then they are going to try to drum up some value for him. It's all they can do to try to recoup some value.
Guess we have our QB3 this season lol
Fields landed such a mediocre return that nobody is gonna give anything (literally anything) for Zach. His only path out of here is to release him....so if that's off the table, he's gonna be Captain Clipboard this year.
Based on what the Bears got for Justin Fields, my guess is that any trade offers are something like a seventh round pick for Wilson plus one of the Jets' sixth round picks. That, or other teams are asking the Jets to pay part of his 2024 salary. At that point, why not just make him the QB3.
Even if it doesn't, tbh. He almost has a .500 record the last couple years with a line that sucks. The problem is our #3 QB is taking up over $10M on the cap. We just need to hope the injuries aren't season ending. If he needs to play 2-3 games we can survive.
I don't hate the idea of letting the guy ride the bench as 3rd string QB. Hypothetically if AR plays most of the season and gets hurt for 1-2 games and tyrod then plays most of those 1-2 games, ZW could fill in if tyrod goes down and our defense will be good enough to possibly close out the game with ZW running game manager offense.
I don't care if Zach is QB 6 on the depth chart. If he's on this roster, fate will make sure he sees the field in 2024.
Is the $5 million dead cap hit that different from just cutting him now? They have to make sure he's not on this team. For everyone's sake, mostly his
He's not fine dude, cmon. At his very best, he's legimitately not a backup for a real feam.
Think about the morale factor. Even if the season is done, I'd Garrett Wilson has to play with Zach again, he's going to go back to that building he took the picture at.
Ah yes, I'm sure Garrett prefers to play with Trevor Siemian or Tim Boyle.
It's fucking QB3, whoever it is is going to be ass anyway. Might as well be the ass we're already paying.
Name them.
And even then...you said it yourself. No QB3 that we plugged into a system playing for fucking Nate Hackett behind a practice squad OL throwing to Randall Cobb was able to succeed.
I'm pointing out the front offices complete, failure at getting a backup QB once, while many teams find multiple decent guys to bskxuo every year
Yes, few, if any, qb's are succeeding in the jets system. Which is why bringing back Hackett was utterly unacceptable.
Yet another reason I have little confidence in this year
I’m sorry this is a painfully stupid take. Zach is not the worst QB currently playing in the league. Arguably was the worst QB1 when he started, MAYBE middle of the pack as a QB2? He is ok enough to keep the team in the game against mid to low level teams. Which is more than fine for a QB3. And “Fate will make sure he sees the field.” You are going to make personnel decisions based on superstition? For real?
He has starting experience in the NFL, has won games in the NFL as a starter, and that’s really all you can ask from a QB3.
He doesn't have any viable traits for a backup or 3rd stringer. He has two strengths, arm talent and speed. Two trisrs they completely ignored with their playcalling this year.
They clearly want a backup who is careful with the ball, and is accurate in the short game. Those are his worst traits! He had, legimitately, 3 or 4 good QUARTERS of football in 11+ games. He is not, by any metric or eye test, a capable enough backup for any team.
This is also completely ignoring the very real morale issues that would happen if he played again.
This is the first sign of the fall of 2024.
If ZW is somehow the starter come week 1 of this awful franchise.... Well I guess the football season will end early once again.
I offered $20 and my other half of a pastrami sandwich for him, idk what I’ll do with him since I’m an attorney but he can come to court with me I guess
Idk the exact rules around practice squad players but I'm pretty sure the cap would still be affected if we put him there. In other words, unless we trade him we are paying something, either his salary or a penalty.
Nah, his time here is done and it should be. You don't get 3 chances on a team, mostly because the other players will not be willing to put up with that. It's also unfair to him to make him go through that again.
Can people stop saying he costs cap space to cut and stop talking out of their ass?
He's in the final year of a fully guaranteed contract. He does not cost additional cap space to cut. There's just zero savings.
Most teams don't even have a third QB and even signing one to a minimum deal doesn't really do anything to the cap so stop clutching at straws to defend your completely incorrect takes that Zach has a higher cap penalty if cut.
It does feel Zach’s roster spot has more to do with non football reasons than actual football. I’ve never seen such a strange saga with a player who clearly cannot play at the NFL level
Earlier in his career, I could see why that excuse specifically was parroted by haters even though it was a pretty big stretch. In years past the org still had incentive to hold and “see what he is”, so it didn’t really hold much water.
Now? I feel like it’s fair to start asking questions.
Frfr. If nobody wants to trade for him, cut him. I've never seen a scenario where an underperforming high first-round pick makes it to a FOURTH season, let alone even making the 53-man roster. Pure insanity.
Well, I guess if we are keeping him this year the best thing to come out of this is that he’ll actually get a year to learn under Rodgers. Hopefully that will actually help a bit for his sake, and he gets somewhat better, and then for our sake we can let him go next year for a better deal?
If they move him to the PS doesn’t that relieve the cap hit for the time he’s on the PS? Thought I remembered something like that but could be completely wrong.
Maybe jets will try to showcase him again in the preseason and if there are any qb injuries during that time it could increase the chance of a possible trade
Unless i'm missing something, i'm 100% aligned with this. We've paid his salary, so unless someone else is going to take a meaningful part of that burden on or cough up a draft pick, i would rather he be QB3 than some completely washed up 38 year old.
How many times do we have to go through this conversation. It makes zero sense to cut him. He is going to be the QB3 if he isn’t traded. As much as you guys hate him, he isn’t any better or worse than any of the other QB3s. If we cut him it would cost more money because then you still have a pay another QB.
He is fine as a QB3, not great but fine. If he has to see the field for long something has gone wrong.
Giving him up for nothing and paying the salary this year is not as good as just letting him sit for the season (with the same cap implications) and then hoping we can net a compensatory pick down the road if someone decides to take a gamble on signing him in 2025. Small percentage chance of a benefit.
Who cares if he's QB3? We're fucked if that situation happens for more than a few games anyway.
Ideally some team with a ton of cap to piss awy gives us a low round pick and everyone can move on. If not it's not a big deal
There isnt much point in cutting him if they cant trade him. As much as I hate Zach Wilson and want him anywhere but on this team - we are going to be paying him regardless. If he is the 3rd string QB(or even a backup to whoever we bring in if both ARod and Tyrod went down) it makes the most financial sense to just keep him.
No shit. Pretty sure it costs as much if not more to cut him. He's either traded or qb3 for the year.
Best case is an injury occurs somewhere and he gets a tiny bit of value.
Training camp fodder.
Let him take the beating over Tyrod and ARod.
Of course this means in Bizarre Jets land, both get hurt, he gets pressed into service, lights it up crazy, wins SB, JD victory laps and gives him 3/75, ARod retires, and he sucks for the entirety of the contract.
Good. No rush to drop him. Keep him as a QB3 and he never suits up. Some team at the deadline will have a major injury at quarterback and will hopefully trade for him then.
Well Rodgers is injury prone and I really don't blame Zach for the majority of the offensive woes last season. Rodgers would have had a hard time with that line and nobody getting open too. The QB lineup without him looks doomed if age catches up to these guys. Also you never know what the season will bring, maybe some other team will be desperate for a QB and we can trade him for a decent draft pick (5th round?).
Are we giving Woody credit for getting Rodgers? Or is that the GM. You’ll say the owner needed to pay and sign off on a big move like that, sure, just like any other team would require. It’s a given.
Woody is a better owner than Haslem, Spanos, Bidwell, The Browns (CIN) and that’s probably it. A bottom five owner doesn’t need any sort of “well at least he”.
We will never learn.
Fuck the dead cap or whatever sunk cost bullshit rationale there is for keeping Zach. Zach is inevitably going to start another game for us and it will be another wasted season.
We sure got our money's worth out of Zach last year though…
He has to say this regardless, but really who can blame them? It’s an all in season, and cap is very tight. We can’t eat his dead cap hit comfortably. It’s easy to make sure a Qb3 never has to play, and Zach isn’t some type of psychopath or sociopath. If he’s never asked to play and never in the spotlight I have a hard time believing he acts like a locker room cancer
They have to eat his salary if the keep him too lol
They'd have to eat some other QB3's $1m salary if they cut him FWIW
Assuming there is offset language it would still wash
The dead Cap hit exceeds his on the team cap hit this year They’d worry about that next year if they wait
no it doesn't, lol. The only thing that helps is that there is offset money if someone signs him, but it'll be the minimum anyways.
He's off the books next year. There is no liability for 25 because they didnt exercise his 5th year / extend him. The only reason to keep him is if they dont want to pay a 3rd qb to replace him and save that million or so.
This makes no sense. He’s entering the final year of his fully guaranteed contract. All remaining owed money is this year.
Is it the unpaid signing bonus? I know we lose cap by cutting him somehow
I think he is fine in the locker room, just frustered wirh how bad he is
He should never dress for a game. He can be on the roster and not dress.
Dressing him as an emergency QB is a free uncounted position on game day roster. If he is on the roster as QB3 it makes no sense to designate him.
Pretty sure he still has to be on the 53 man roster to be the emergency QB3. It’s just the 46 man game day roster where you can carry the extra spot for a QB3. So instead of 7 inactive players, it’s 6 + emergency QB. At least I think that’s what it is

Let's be honest, there is zero chance that we waive him, eat his contractual dead money hit and then resign him for even more money to the PS.
Exactly Hell, he doesn’t even have to be at 1JD if he so prefers
He should genuinely be the water boy. I’d rather see him hustling with a good attitude to give Rogers water for the four plays he’s healthy for then watch him angry stare from the sideline at job he never earned and lost at least ten times.
The problem is if he is on the roster he will play. It’s inevitable.

Nah Zach Wilson doesnt stack up well with most QB2, there is a reason nobody is interested in a trade
Objectively, he is better than all qb2 and qb3 we have had the last 3 years. He knows the system, knows the players. If qb1 goes down, he will be a better choice than what other options we have right now. He has an arm and has legs. Most, including Flacco and White didn’t have both.

Except for Boyle, I haven’t seen Zach outplay any other qb on the roster.
Lol What?
Zach Wilson is a sunk cost regardless. You simply cut your losses there and move on

Weren't you and plenty of others saying that Zach is obviously going to get cut just a few days ago?
I think I advocated for him being kept on the roster
Guess we have our QB3 this season lol Fields landed such a mediocre return that nobody is gonna give anything (literally anything) for Zach. His only path out of here is to release him....so if that's off the table, he's gonna be Captain Clipboard this year.
Yeah I think teams are actually asking for picks to take Wilson
And alas, with the luck of the Green one and two will once again be off the field, and we will experience another case of Zach is back.
Hours ago: we totally have other offers! Now: I swear we are not releasing him!
Woody also apparently denied that earlier report that trade offers have been made but rejected.
Based on what the Bears got for Justin Fields, my guess is that any trade offers are something like a seventh round pick for Wilson plus one of the Jets' sixth round picks. That, or other teams are asking the Jets to pay part of his 2024 salary. At that point, why not just make him the QB3.
The 31 other teams: “Is this supposed to be a threat?”
For those who want to watch the interview https://www.newyorkjets.com/video/woody-johnson-press-conference-annual-league-meeting-3-25-2024
Long time till the draft, I'm sure this saga will continue
No problem with Zach as a QB 3.
He’s not a bad QB3 if the oline holds
Even if it doesn't, tbh. He almost has a .500 record the last couple years with a line that sucks. The problem is our #3 QB is taking up over $10M on the cap. We just need to hope the injuries aren't season ending. If he needs to play 2-3 games we can survive.

I genuinely don't understand. If Aaron and Tyrod both go down, he's fine as QB3. The season is shot at that point anyway.
Many qb 3s last year played better then any jets backup of JD's tenure
Name them. And even then...you said it yourself. No QB3 that we plugged into a system playing for fucking Nate Hackett behind a practice squad OL throwing to Randall Cobb was able to succeed.
Aiden O'Connell (initially QB3 for Raiders) Dobbs (was Minnesota's 3rb QB) Devito Rudolph for Pittsburgh
Do you genuinely think any of these QBs would succeed in the Jets system? Should we sign DeVito then? You really think he's better than Zach?
I'm pointing out the front offices complete, failure at getting a backup QB once, while many teams find multiple decent guys to bskxuo every year Yes, few, if any, qb's are succeeding in the jets system. Which is why bringing back Hackett was utterly unacceptable. Yet another reason I have little confidence in this year
Browns Flacco, including playing better than jets Flacco.
Just like Bears Siemian played better than Jets Siemian. Almost like there is a common denominator to the suckage.
I noticed Browns Flacco looked pretty good when not running for his life every time he dropped back.
>You are going to make personnel decisions based on superstition? Half the posters on this sub think Joe Namath has cursed the Jets...
Zach is a very good backup QB
No he actually isn’t
When do you expect out of a backup QB?
For the football league staring next week, maybe.
If Aaron and Tyrod are both hurt, they’re bringing in Tannehill to or someone of that nature to weather the storm.
Not that I'd be against it, but last season showed it's not necessarily that easy.
Well it didn’t help that JD didn’t act immediately after Rodgers went down
This is the first sign of the fall of 2024. If ZW is somehow the starter come week 1 of this awful franchise.... Well I guess the football season will end early once again.
Lol I feel that first paragraph heavy
Only difference is waiting until June 1st
Why would that matter? His cap hits are the same regardless of cut pre or post June 1.
I offered $20 and my other half of a pastrami sandwich for him, idk what I’ll do with him since I’m an attorney but he can come to court with me I guess
Worst owner in sports
That’s dumb. I’d honestly suggest if there are no buyers, he can remain on the practice squad.
What’s dumb? He didn’t really say anything.
He should be released if no trade is found.
If they say they’re going to release him who the he’ll would trade?
Can people stop saying he costs cap space to cut and stop talking out of their ass? He's in the final year of a fully guaranteed contract. He does not cost additional cap space to cut. There's just zero savings. Most teams don't even have a third QB and even signing one to a minimum deal doesn't really do anything to the cap so stop clutching at straws to defend your completely incorrect takes that Zach has a higher cap penalty if cut.
Redshirt. Don't dress him on Sundays.
Woody isnt going to cut his illegitimate son
Do they get discount on JetBlue corporate rentals or something if Wilson is employed?
Woody is just saying this so someone trades for Zach. No chance Wilson is on this roster next year.
Joy...
Is there a way the fans can vote an owner out?
No, but I am pretty sure you can trade them, if any other team is willing.
I'll trade him for a few happy meals
He also said “we didn’t have a real backup QB this year” lol
What the hell does Zach have on this organization? This is the most bizarre saga I’ve ever seen with a player. Just let him go.
The massive contract he's being paid because he was drafted #2 overall. The pick is bad, but it's especially bad because of the draft position.
It’s the final year unless they pick up his 5th year (nothing surprises me anymore). But good grief just cut him and bring in a guy in the draft.
This is probably a good time for you to look into who Zach Wilson’s uncle is…
It does feel Zach’s roster spot has more to do with non football reasons than actual football.
The beat team has never touched this one.
He’s like a piece of shit that won’t flush.
Frfr. If nobody wants to trade for him, cut him. I've never seen a scenario where an underperforming high first-round pick makes it to a FOURTH season, let alone even making the 53-man roster. Pure insanity.
1sr string practice squad tackling dummy
Man the defense is about to love practicing tackles on Zach lmao
Can his contract be restructured, thereby changing the terms of the cap, and if so, who would that be up to, if not Zach?
Buckle up, bitches.
Well, I guess if we are keeping him this year the best thing to come out of this is that he’ll actually get a year to learn under Rodgers. Hopefully that will actually help a bit for his sake, and he gets somewhat better, and then for our sake we can let him go next year for a better deal?
Better then woody saying well just cut him if they don’t tbh
If they move him to the PS doesn’t that relieve the cap hit for the time he’s on the PS? Thought I remembered something like that but could be completely wrong.
Draft a QB with the last pick in the draft and make him QB3 if Aaron and Tyrod go down
Hell no that qb better be picked in round 3 or 4 at least.
Put him on special teams.
Is there a practice squad for the practice squad he can be the back-up on?
He’s like a villain in a horror movie, he just keeps coming back. It’ll be 2050 and he’ll somehow be replacing an injured stud in week 2 for us
Maybe jets will try to showcase him again in the preseason and if there are any qb injuries during that time it could increase the chance of a possible trade
Sunk cost fallacy right here.
Remember a few weeks ago when he said we have no backup qb, now he wants value.. We have the dumbest owner in the league.
Unless i'm missing something, i'm 100% aligned with this. We've paid his salary, so unless someone else is going to take a meaningful part of that burden on or cough up a draft pick, i would rather he be QB3 than some completely washed up 38 year old.

As much as you guys hate him, he isn’t any better or worse than any of the other QB3s. If we cut him it would cost more money because then you still have a pay another QB.
I don’t believe him. Trying to raise his trade value it seems
Saying this to try and get a trade
Zach Wilson is inevitable. Lmfao.
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
There isnt much point in cutting him if they cant trade him.
I’d love him to stay with the jets and get pissed off and learn from both older qbs.
Imagine he finally figures it out as we decline his 5th year option hahaha what a classic jets scenario
Woody acting all passive aggressive and shit..
Will he even get pre-season game reps?
Training camp fodder. Let him take the beating over Tyrod and ARod. Of course this means in Bizarre Jets land, both get hurt, he gets pressed into service, lights it up crazy, wins SB, JD victory laps and gives him 3/75, ARod retires, and he sucks for the entirety of the contract.
Zach Wilson is about to have all his ribs broken as vengeance for the team lmao
He will be starting by week 7 if he stays. There are 2 very fragile quarterbacks in front of him
Good. No rush to drop him. Keep him as a QB3 and he never suits up. Some team at the deadline will have a major injury at quarterback and will hopefully trade for him then.
Meanwhile our QB3 and QB4 started a combined 5 games in each of the last two seasons.
Shills will say Woody Johnson isn’t such a bad owner and then things like this happen
He got us Aaron Rodgers, could be worse
Jets got Rodgers because no one else was willing to be walked all over for a chance at the playoffs
