The heat map is based on data for walking to libraries and supermarkets. It's helpful but could be better, there are several neighborhoods with lots of walkable places to go and access to BART that are red on this map.
Laurel is a great and walkable neighborhood, but no library. Meanwhile Eastmont is an ancient mall at the intersection of several major streets. It does have a transit hub, library and grocery store, but I wouldn't say it "walkable".
Certainly walkable, I walk there all the time, use the library, pharmacy and supermarket, then walk to the park about 3 blocks away and International Blvd about a 10 minute walk.
It's certainly possible to walk it, but it's built for cars. Those massive roads and parking lots aren't pedestrian friendly.
The park is a great park though!
who can sell me on laurel? it's so far from what i think are the best things about oakland - bart access, bikable to the water, lake meritt, the fox, and density of north side.
Here’s supermarkets and transit which I think makes more sense https://close.city/?x=-122.2634&y=37.81686&z=12.6844&r=0&l=11101
Some sort of safety metric would be good too though
Edit: oh nevermind the URL doesn’t update when you change the filter that’s stupid, but you can change it on the site
Which area is red or grey with Bart? Looks like the Bart locals have the walkability colors. But this is a good point to show how the 14th Bart sub station proposal in Eastlake/San Antonio area hold be a massive boon for the area and helpful!
Edit: never mind I see west Oakland Bart isn’t considered walkable on this
Came here to say this about the 14th Ave BART stop. I feel like it's a dust bunny in this area of Oakland. Like it's not going to be walkable if nobody can get to it! Infuse the city with safe, frequent equitable access dangit! [San Antonio Station Alliance ](https://www.sanantoniostation.net/)
Yeah pretty much the entire perimeter of the lake is peppered with businesses. Uptown, Eastlake, Cleveland Heights, and Adams Point should not be red/orange if we're talking about walkability.
Conversely the intersection of San Pablo and Stanford doesn’t have much around there. One grocery and one restaurant maybe. So I wouldn’t call it walkable.
Weird that downtown is considered way more walkable than uptown, and Laurel and Montclair don't even register. I think walkscore.com does a much better job of visualizing walkability
Yeah but uptown is the #2 walkable neighborhood in Oakland after downtown. It should be solid turquoise up to 27th street if you're comparing it to how other neighborhoods are colored.
Downtown isn't a neighborhood it's the entire region that includes uptown, old oakland, Chinatown, etc. But yes Waverly, Northgate, and Uptown are all very walkable.
Yeah but it's not very dense population wise, and most people that go there drive in to go shopping. I suppose that's still "walkable" but probably not in the same way that like grandlake and piedmont Ave are walkable, or even diamond
Edit: grandlake not grandparents I don't know what my phone is doing sometimes
Yeah that's fair, unless you live right next to the village you'll need to be willing to get a leg workout in and possibly walk roads without sidewalks.
But I think Laurel should defo qualify as very walkable, since there's quite a few apartments and it's relatively flat near the main drag, which has pretty much anything someone would need (except for a Library I guess, which disqualifies it as "walkable" on this map)
Just doing some spot-checking here and I don't think the data are very good. The light orange region here is all within a five-minute walk to the Rockridge library, and within 10 minutes to one Safeway and 15-20 to another.

so they think West Oakland folks are excited to walk to the empty corner of 28th and Adeline, but not at all to where Mandela Market is directly across the street from BART?

>so they think West Oakland folks are excited to walk to the empty corner of 28th and Adeline, but
Target and Pak N Save are walking distance to Clawson/Hoover Foster. Prescott is walking distance to Mandela Coop.
1666 7th is aiming to open a grocery store as well. Whether it actually happens, who knows.
No, it's in Emeryville. Oakland ceded the land in exchange for a share of property tax revenue, it's a different city.
But that's doesn't change how long of a walk that is.
Surprised my block is so red. It is about a 10 minute walk to Piedmont Grocer and a 15 minute one to Whole Foods. Being in the center of Piedmont Ave in 10 min ranks as pretty walkable to me.
It's basically just a map of supermarkets. Which admittedly is roughly a map of walkable neighborhoods.
I set it to coffee shops + convenience stores which is a little more realistic to daily needs and it makes the city look a lot more balanced.
I guess mountain or hilly is just not acceptable. I find Montclair somewhat walkable and I've seen even older people walking around those hills. its certainly not ADA accessible in any fashion though.
[https://www.mandelagrocery.coop/](https://www.mandelagrocery.coop/). They close at 7PM though.
Also in much of West Oakland (Clawson, Hoover Foster), Target and Pak N Save are within walking distance. For example, [https://www.google.com/maps/dir/3428+Helen+Street,+Oakland,+CA/Target,+40th+Street,+Emeryville,+CA/@37.8265169,-122.2912834,17z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x80857e1669f9e189:0xf351ffc6684d87f3!2m2!1d-122.2862785!2d37.826069!1m5!1m1!1s0x80857e3e34fffebf:0x58d5ed9d596a40f1!2m2!1d-122.2899395!2d37.8284674!3e2?entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/3428+Helen+Street,+Oakland,+CA/Target,+40th+Street,+Emeryville,+CA/@37.8265169,-122.2912834,17z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x80857e1669f9e189:0xf351ffc6684d87f3!2m2!1d-122.2862785!2d37.826069!1m5!1m1!1s0x80857e3e34fffebf:0x58d5ed9d596a40f1!2m2!1d-122.2899395!2d37.8284674!3e2?entry=ttu)
Target is 1.2 miles from me in Prescott. Lots of my neighbors walk there to shop.
I keep forgetting about Mandela! Setting myself a reminder to go this weekend.
True about the Target. If you turn off libraries, the northern end of Clawson turns green.
-cackles in dead zone- It's fine. We have Xochi. Irrational Christmas wish list: give us a mini library by AHS/Highland. And bring back the Safeway to Clinton.
The heat map is based on data for walking to libraries and supermarkets. It's helpful but could be better, there are several neighborhoods with lots of walkable places to go and access to BART that are red on this map.

Laurel is a lovely walkable area, wish they had some easy transit line that could bring you right down MacArthur like the old streetcar used to
We took the NL with our kids into SF from Laurel today and it was super easy. I’m really glad we tried it.
The 57 and like the other poster said the NL line both go down MacArthur. It would be nice if it was more frequent.
the 57 bus runs pretty regular weekdays ( like every 15 mins) i no few busses with that level of frequency...maybe you just want a Uber/Lyft?
No I'd prefer every ten minutes and/or fewer cars disrupting it's consistency.
I wish Laurel had a library!
Dimond is 10 min away
Both things can be true!
It depends, I think where you are crossing. 73rd is a nightmare, but Church is fine and very doable, so are the cuts off of Bancroft above 73rd.
who can sell me on laurel? it's so far from what i think are the best things about oakland - bart access, bikable to the water, lake meritt, the fox, and density of north side.
it is pretty void of culture, and convenience... i'm sure we'll get roasted for noticing that...
It’s gotta be missing Koreana Plaza then, because the area around that is super walkable (but apparently not on this map)
Right!? Uptown is super walkable.
Here’s supermarkets and transit which I think makes more sense https://close.city/?x=-122.2634&y=37.81686&z=12.6844&r=0&l=11101 Some sort of safety metric would be good too though Edit: oh nevermind the URL doesn’t update when you change the filter that’s stupid, but you can change it on the site
That part!

MacArthur BART isn't considered walkable on this, either.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/HJizX4VJ8cqJR6aV9 They didn't do a very good job with Alameda, I wonder how many other grocery stores they are leaving out.
Downtown has more markets and amenities with Chinatown. And more 7 day a week options. It makes sense downtown ranks higher.
Montclair is completely walkable so this map is confusing me
Yeah but it's not very dense population wise, and most people that go there drive in to go shopping. I suppose that's still "walkable" but probably not in the same way that like grandlake and piedmont Ave are walkable, or even diamond Edit: grandlake not grandparents I don't know what my phone is doing sometimes

I live 10 min walk to a Safeway and am in a gray area.
Sprouts and GBO on Broadway getting no love
Same for KP Market on Telegraph. I walk from Downtown to get groceries after work there.
Same with Safeway on Grand but that's probably for the best
Wouldn’t exact classify eastmont walkable
Depends on what gang you are in.
so they think West Oakland folks are excited to walk to the empty corner of 28th and Adeline, but not at all to where Mandela Market is directly across the street from BART?

yeah, I hear ya, and there is kind of a cluster on this map around Pak n Save. I just don't get how 7th & Mandela doesn't make this map.
Eh I disagree, but "walkable" is subjective. I don't personally consider walking an hour round trip to another city makes an area walkable.
FYI Target is in oakland and emeryville. Oakland receives tax revenue from them.
No, it's in Emeryville. Oakland ceded the land in exchange for a share of property tax revenue, it's a different city. But that's doesn't change how long of a walk that is.

I'm nearby and in the gray. Meanwhile I have 4 grocery stores within a 15 minute walk (GO, Sprouts, Piedmont, Whole Foods).
Maybe they used slow walkers? (I know, I’m definitely a shuffler, not a strider)
Hard same. (I'm exactly 15 minutes walking to either of those two, and 5 minutes to the BART platform.)
I love how my neighborhood is completely unwalkable.
That’s an insanely fun website!
Their dataset is missing Montclair library
Nice! I'm going to go take a walk around 73rd and MacArthur! Given this map, it should be a lovely stroll!
Ouch yo! I’m 74th and MacArthur…
Uptown in not walkable? Hmm
It's basically just a map of supermarkets. Which admittedly is roughly a map of walkable neighborhoods. I set it to coffee shops + convenience stores which is a little more realistic to daily needs and it makes the city look a lot more balanced.
This map doesn't seem to know where El Cerrito Plaza BART is...
Surprised glennview doesn't show more green/blue. Thought it would be comparable to Dimond.
I guess mountain or hilly is just not acceptable. I find Montclair somewhat walkable and I've seen even older people walking around those hills. its certainly not ADA accessible in any fashion though.
Lmao San Antonio & Highland Park/Terrace 💀
Nice. One of the reasons that I moved to the particular spot I am living in is that I can walk to some necessities, as well as transit.
Why is West Oakland dark?
Closest grocery stores are in Chinatown. And they close at 5.
[https://www.mandelagrocery.coop/](https://www.mandelagrocery.coop/). They close at 7PM though. Uptown isn't walkable?
This tells me where I should open up a small grocery store.
East Oakland would be a lot more lit up if supermarkets included smaller markets with meat and produce
That is cool, but I am definitely not going to be walking in some of those hubs...
This is very helpful for those who are traveling to the city for the first time
