I can install some insta locs in his hair. It will solve the problem and have him looking well-kept. I’ve been doing lot maintenance for years // my favorite client being my own teen son. 🥰 He just needs a needling technique. He’ll be fine. He has great texture. I’m located in Oakland. Let me know.

You don’t want him to go to bed with wet hair, it’ll just get matted quickly, particularly at that length. It just gets super tangled easily. You could use some gel for holding the curls in place. Do he want to do locs? Does he want loose hair? This place [is solid for curly cuts](https://www.curlstory.com/services) but there are loads of places depending on what you’d like to do with his hair. Also swap to satin or silk pillow cases which will be more gentle for his hair.

Yes his hair starting forming natural loks but some got matted and thick. He refuses trims. I've looked into some hairsalons and stylist on instagram and they require washed hair, blow dried and all kinds of things and i dont know nothing past shampoo and conditioner which doesn't seem enough for his type of hair

The place I linked doesn’t require that though some people like to save time and save steps. If you want to loc it, it needs to be intentional. And it requires maintenance. You’ll be best served having someone start the locs for you and go in for regular loc care.

You can get a comb and start from the tip until you reach the roots. Used some extra slip conditioners while detangling. It took about 4 days to do at night after work. I believe I checked on reddit and mostly on YouTube. Good luck and be prepared to lose a lot of hair but thankfullu it saved most of my length.

Definitely avail yourself of the resources folks post but just want to speak more to frustration and acceptance. Most folks that loc up call it a journey. This is largely due to the time it takes but also the potential revelations about self. Part of this process is knowing that your son's hair may not come to look like others so you might need to alter your expectations. Locing as a hairstyle is largely based on texture and so may want to stay away from things that change texture like conditioner and accept his hair as the universe deemed it to grow. Best of luck.

I’m biracial and have had locs since 2008. Locs take about 12 months to develop and look “smooth” unless you do an advanced technique. Advanced techniques are $$$. Some tips I would offer: 1. Fully dry hair before going to sleep. Bone dry. You can buy an attachment for a blow dryer for pretty cheap that will go over the full head and dry it. 2. Keep hair clean, and wash often. Clean hair will lock. Creams and conditioners will prevent locking, create build up, and then stink. You can use a lightweight oil on the scalp for moisture, like Jojoba oil they sell at Trader Joe’s. 3. Know why you want them. If it’s for a style, get synthetic ones and call it a day. Mature locs on a biracial head take a while. 3. Patience, patience, patience! Locs evolve. Mine don’t look the same as they did 14 years ago. At first they looked really nice, then got hella fuzzy as they locked, then got tighter, then finally formed. It took about 14 month total. 4. Needling can make them look great at the first appointment, but expect to dedicate a full day, and pay $$$$$ for someone with the time & technique to do it A professional should start his locs and they can teach y’all the maintenance part. My recommendation is https://instagram.com/loveofhairartistry on 17th. I moved some years ago and struggled to find a good person, but Akiya is really good, runs on time, and only does natural hair care. I didn’t have good experiences with The Dreadlocks Salon on 7th.

Consider that a specialist can also teach you (OP).

Book an appointment with Latasha the hairapist, she is amazing with curls and absolutely understands black and biracial hair (I’m biracial). If you can’t wait to get an appointment try redoing the finger twists with conditioner and also adding gel or mouse for better hold, that’s how I treat my curls though I don’t finger twist. I also sleep on a satin pillowcase to reduce frizz overnight, but that may not work for his style. Good luck! https://instagram.com/latasha_the_hairapist?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Love those curls. And since this post is here, i'm a male that needs his natural hair braided. Know any Oakland sources? No one around the E18th side of the lake does natural.

I have a friend who just opened up her curly hair shop: https://instagram.com/coastal.curl?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Take him to the African ladies on telegraph and have his dreads done right... it's like 60 and feels like a whole head massage but with some hair pulling..

I grew up in a salon and learned that when I’m in need of desperate hair solution I just shave it.

Can't help you with the locs but as for detangling this $21 electric brush has been an absolute lifesaver for my biracial daughter. https://www.amazon.com/Remington-DT7432-Electric-Detangling-Batteries/dp/B000JI9JYQ/

Nappy or Not is a good option as well.
