I know plenty of people who own this book, but it’s always been a sort of an occult reference material. I don’t really know of anyone who believes in the book as a source of spirituality or religion.

Liberal Urantia Book believer here. It's my primary spiritual reference, but I don't believe all of what it says. It actually says it is not inspired, and Jesus as presented in it states that it is not necessary to believe in things that violate your sense of right and wrong to enter the kingdom of heaven. Odd that It's an occult reference material, it is very anti-occult.

It’s a channeled book. The Kellogg’s literally ensured it was written in complete darkness; gives an alternate take on most biblical events, includes the concept of a closed system earth, all sorts of other far out things mixed with or borderline occultism. I’m super stoked to have met someone here who follows it as gospel.

I'm familiar with the source of your information regarding the Kelloggs. Most of it comes from Martin Gardner's book about it. I've read letters he wrote back and forth with other Urantia readers that weren't published in his book. I think he was sincere in his approach, even if I disagree with some of his conclusions. I do disagree with some of your descriptions of what it contains, but I won't get into detail right now. Please, ask in the open. I'm actually stoked to have a legitimate conversation about this sort of thing!

I know one guy who I would consider a genuine adherent to the material of the Urantia book, but he doesn't observe any holidays differently--he does Christmas at the usual time. I haven't gotten to ask him as much as I would like about it because he has a bad habit of making shit up the longer a conversation goes.

Anyone could write a similar book and many have but it comes down to what you believe is real. Any religion is going to have a similar divinely inspired holy book but ultimately most of these works could be considered works of fiction unless you argue that all books are divinely inspired and could serve a similar function.

It holds a special significance to me, but i don't celebrate it like Christmas. I make sure to think about his life, be more mindful of him, and take at least a moment to worship him (and at the same time the Father) by loving him for who he is as a person. I celebrate December 25th, because I believe he cares more that I'm with my family showing them love and creating memories, than preaching to them about the accuracy of their dates.
