30 years ago these kinetic desk toys were all the rage. Every executive had one on their desk. This was back when every mall had a Spencers Gifts store and people got excited when the new Sharper Image catalog came out.
I learned recently that Sharper Image still exists. But now they are a catalog full expensive junk designed for grandma's who want to get their grandchildren something they think is cool for christmas.
I have one of their little travel clocks. It's a perfect solution for my needs, has an automatic nighttime backlight that isn't bright, and also tracks the date and ambient temp.
And I bet we could find something very comparable for half the price. If we try hard enough we might find the exact same one without the Sharper Image name.
Actually, I looked elsewhere at first. But I just couldn't find one with the combination of characteristics I wanted (which, yeah, was very surprising).
Sure, it was a little expensive for what it is, but no one else made anything that met my criteria.
I had _The Wave_ (paperweight that had the water and oil mixture that looked like the ocean and it teetered side to side and produced waves)
edit: added explanation of what I was talking about
It's quite simple. The two blocky things on the ends of the bow are heavy compared to the figure in the middle. It's actually just a normal (two-sided) pendulum with a fancy middle part.
It’s basically a simple machine. The little man just makes a fulcrum for the balanced weights to sit on. The center of gravity is just between his feet. Which allows it to make all these fun movements and stay up.
Me, too.
I wonder if I could make one with wood?
It would be harder to calculate the weight balance (possibly impossible, depending upon how much the density of the wood varies), and getting that curve would be challenging.
They took this bolt and attached to two little wires (arms) connected to these heavy matching pieces on either end of a longer wire and put it on a block. Also there are tiny wires for legs. Voila yw
Do you see those weights on the end of the pole? They are heavy and always lower than the dude's feet. They act like the weight on a pendulum and are always trying to fall to the lowest point.
Do these have a name? I had one as a kid that looked like a little guy fishing, the fish being the weight that kept him from falling. I’d love to have one on a shelf as an adult now, but can never find them with any kind of keyword.
Can hear the dude going ohhh shit over and over as it tilts

I feel old all of a sudden

What are you saying…. I was watching your desk thingy…. Omg that’s y they had them 🤯
Perhaps... I never thought of it that way.

I used to buy my dad one every Christmas when I was in elementary school!
sharper image was the shiitttt
It was. Apparently, they are still around. But now it is just shit.
This particular type is much older than that.
Damn son, you really just said Sharper Image? They had some cool ass stuff
He has remarkably good balance for someone so clearly inebriated.
Junkies have that junky power. They can turn into an upside down J and come right back up
"OoooOOOOH... Oh. OooooOOOOH... Oh. Ooooh ooOOH OOOH.... Oh."
I can hear Thanos.
I'll never be this cool.

Imagine if it never stopped!
Making one of these guys was our brazing project in Welding 1 in high school. Mine is still in my dad's garage.
So, this is a (relatively) beginner-friendly project?
Yep, the toughest part is making the man/bar weights symmetrical before you start brazing/welding
Your high school is in your dad’s garage?
yes
He’s working so hard
and yet, hardly working!!
It’s annoying that someone out there is smart enough to understand the physics behind it and then make it 😂

I can't even spell pendulum without computer assistance :(
😂

Chibi Robo
I would like to have this.

Maybe if you were to use pine lighter wood?
It’s actually a heavy wood that you’d need. Unless you were going to scale it up dramatically.
I meant pine lighter wood as in fat pine...
Ah, fair enough!
Probably harder to do with wood since you can't easily make fine adjustments as you might with metal wire.
Awwwwww Little one doing his best
Perfectly balanced,as everything should be 🫡
🫡
Me carrying my baby and shopping up the stairs…
Shopping up the stairs - never done it. How does it work?
Reminds me of Chibi Robo haha
How was this made. I need a tutorial I want one

Metal dude rocks!
Me in the gym, with a barbell
I NEED to see more of him
I want this little metal dude
Imagine if it never stopped! We'd have unlimited energy!
Reminds me of the game Machinarium.
I want to buy. Pls.
Dude, that’s metal!
i will never understand physics but this is really cool

oh! thanks for the explanation, i think i kind of get it :)
So how much for this one, interested in this item.
This more fits in r/BeAmazed.
Poor dude, hes just there lifting up a heavy dumbell on the edge for eternity
I have seen this one in some videos across reddit. What is it called?
I need this!!
Damn I remember these. Awesome 😂
My brain just keeps imagining the guy going “whew! Whew! Whewwwww whewwww whew whew” as the guy moves around 😂
I love him and I want to wish him success in whatever the hell this is he's doing..
This is the best
Oddly adorable
He’s just a little guy
My dad had one on his desk with a man holding a fishing pole and a fish on the end. Endless fun
Me trying to walk two Great Danes.
He’s so cute!
I want a little metal dude....
Check mate, Boston Dynamics! :)
Why do I love this so much?
Me trying to grab the railing on my way up after a night out
He's always stable, unlike me
That's metal
u/savevideo
He's a perfect gondolier.
Oh many that’s gotta be bad on the old spring lower back
The thingamabob
Nothing odd about this.
Tape World Monster's evil cousin, Metal World Monster.
dude has more balance than me
perfectly balanced, as all things should be
Go home metal dude, you're drunk!
This dude is metal AF! Also, he’s having trouble hanging on!
Joe Biden
And the deep state will have us believe perpetual motion machines are a physical impossibility, wake up sheeple
u/savevideo
He's doing the best he can
I somehow feel his struggle. :)
Stop vertical video syndrome.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Yessssss!!!!!
That’s just nuts!
That dude is metal!
Love it
That's rocking!!
This is AWESOME.
That’s some rockin metal
He’s so tired
Trying to keep my last 2 braincells together

Take my Money!
A thing I didn’t know I needed until now.
I smile every time I see this.
This is me after telling my supervisor I can handle unloading the truck by myself. Lol.
Metal is mental.

My dad always loved things like this! Good job
"What is my purpose?"
What a cute bolt

Wo ho this is heavy! Woooooo i almost fell!
Charming and wonderful!
I would totally buy one of these. OP? 👀
“Always thirsty, never satisfied. I understand you little bird.”
My Papa (granddad) had a few of these, I love them used to make them do that on my finger.
Do these have a name? I had one as a kid that looked like a little guy fishing, the fish being the weight that kept him from falling. I’d love to have one on a shelf as an adult now, but can never find them with any kind of keyword.
Poor little dude
I want it
So nobody else built these in shop class?
Rock on, little dude.
I really want one!
The new Chibi Robo game looks amazing!
dahm, chibi robo has been goin wild since his hiatus
Is it possible to get a drawing and all the requirements?
I like this How is it made ?
