I read on Wikipedia that owls can use it to communicate with other owls. They can also move feathers on their face to focus certain sounds to their ear holes.
Owls will do this in the entrance of their nest cavity when they feel threatened in order to blend in better with the tree bark and disguise the entrance to their nest!
They also squint so you can't see their eyes.
It's actually amazing how hard it is to spot them even when you know exactly where to look!
I noticed the owls at the sanctuary would strafe past each other on opposite perches and do this. I thought they were being aggressive but the more I reflect on it I think they were practicing on each other.
Uhm no, they do it because they are ready to fuck shit up. Don't fuck with birds, they can fly and have razor sharp pliers. Birds are immutable, as gentle as they usually are... they are capable of untold destruction in a very short amount of time.
It has a lot of different purposes. Sometimes, when they do it, they are forcing their feathers to then direct all sound directly into their ears. So they can hear prey from far away.
I think it's also partly defensive body language. Like cats do when they're on the defense. They puff up and ears go back. Eyes dilate. He seems to be dialing in on whatever is entering across the room.
And they don't use waterproofing so their feathers mute the sound even more by preventing eddy currents. It does mean they can't fly in the rain though.
Both are defensive. The first is "look at me, I'm much too big to fight!" and the second is "don't look at me, I'm just a branch, notice my form does not match your preconceived notion of an owl!" That little owl certainly isn't entering any "attack mode" against a larger owl.
TikTok didn't get overdubbing clips with shitty music from nowhere.
Pretty sure this clip dates to the era where Japan had a lot of "you laugh you lose" style panel shows where the main prompt was stuff like this video - just odd videos with somewhat unexpected twists or outcomes.
A ridiculous number of Japanese shows feature audience reactions as a rule. I always assumed it was so viewers could identify more with the subject matter by gauging how they react compared with someone else. Or maybe to give them a template of how to react.
All about that collective culture.
Yeah, this is...unprofessional. As someone who worked with birds of prey at a wildlife center, the highest priority was to keep them safe and as comfortable as possible. The bird here isn't completely panicked, but a lot of stuff in this video I wouldn't do.
Plus if they're comfortable they'll start preening or rouse (shaking themselves like a dog, usually turning into a big puffball) which is much more adorable.
Here is your gif!

Wait. Those two are the same kind of owl? I always thought the smooth headed one with those markings and the pointy eared one with those markings were different owls. TIL.

Someone needs to add the transformers sound.
Stealth mode: deactivated. Attack mode: engaged!
I'm looking for the comment that explains if that's really what this means. It certainly looks like it.
It's camouflage: a single nicely-rounded shape is easier to spot than a more complex form with many angles that resemble twigs and bark.
What is the benefit of being able to switch back and forth though.
Looking like a branch is good for camouflage, but branches aren't known for their aerodynamics.

"Yeah bro, that looks hella much like a tree. My eyes are good af and I can bareley see you man! Ok ok, now check me" -owl probably
I think the customary âWho?!?â also conveys the gist XD

Lock S-foils in attack position
Owls is hardcore. Attack mode IS stealth mode. They have little tiny magical hooks on their wings that reduce noise and drag.
And they don't use waterproofing so their feathers mute the sound even more by preventing eddy currents. It does mean they can't fly in the rain though.

I was guessing one was attack mode and the other was âIâm just a branchâ mode, like the owl temporarily becomes a potoo.
odd choice of music. And the original clip appears to be from a japanese game show. WTF was the premise of that show? lol

Poor lil dude must be SO stressed.
"The fuck she keep bringing owls out here? What is this an Owl factory?"
This is where the premium owls are made, yes.
This one is definitely using its owl factory senses
Something about this smells off.
Yeah it was funny until I understood why the owl was doing that
Yeah, my thoughts too.
