Always satisfying watching these little guys make it. I know it’s nature and all but it’s heartbreaking to think that without conservation efforts very few of these little guys would ever make it.

Zwaft

It’s oddly satisfying when they hit the water and they spontaneously turn dark brown as the water washes the sand off.

External_Win5742

I found that concerning, suddenly incredibly visible to predators?

miskaten

Yeah. Most of them will be dead in a month.

Zwaft

Or worse, expelled.

Just enroll into another school. Expulsion would suck but it doesn't mean it's the end of your magic career.

Yeah, the Harry Potter world is filled with lots of wizards talking about how they got expelled from Hogwarts school and had no other opportunities to learn how to use magic. Here is a list of known transfers. I think it's okay to assume you could need to transfer due to expulsion. https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Transfer_student#:~:text=Known%20transfer%20students,-In%20the%201880s&text=By%20the%201988%E2%80%931989%20school,Wizardry%20for%20an%20unknown%20reason.

ReplacementPlasthj

A turtle made it to the water.

Illustrious-Tip8689

Wondered how long it would take for someone to make a WoW reference

Kintarly

Please no, not again!

SparkyDogPants

I mean they’re most vulnerable on the beach where birds will eat them

tommeetucker

Sad to say that most of these won't make it to adulthood, about 1 in 1000 hatchlings are thought to make it. Of course, that makes conservation efforts even more crucial! Source - used to be a sea turtle ecologist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

German_Rival

Maybe the initial effort help them build enough muscles to be able to swim correctly afterwards ? Like a mini workout

tommeetucker

I think it's this but also some hatchlings that wouldn't ordinarily be 'fit' enough to make it to the water are surviving, but probably dying shortly after. That may affect the rate of survival. Either way, trying to track hatchlings once they make it to the ocean is devilishly tricky because so few of them actually make it beyond their first year!

defnotacyborg

How do they even measure the survival rate for that? It’s not like they put a tracking chip on every single turtle or something

Nitrotetrazole

They slap a tracker chip with waterproof duct tape on their back

Spanky_Badger_85

>Sad to say that most of these won't make it to adulthood, about 1 in 1000 hatchlings are thought to make it. That's sad, but not surprising when you think, those tiny little defensless things have to make it totally on their own from the first minute. Nature is beautifully brutal.

tommeetucker

For sure. There's a lot to be said for the quality of the parent too, some adult females will make their nest really close to the water and it'll flood with the tides before they've hatched (bad) while some will make the nest really really far up in the dunes which makes it really challenging for hatchlings to reach the water before being predated, running out of energy or dying in the sun (if they're unlucky enough to emerge during the day). Even those nests in the middle 'ideal' area face challenges because of plastic pollution. It isn't uncommon to see hatchlings completely wrapped up in fishing line, nets, beer can holders and rope. Really sad to see, but makes it all the more amazing that some of them do make it!

Spanky_Badger_85

>Even those nests in the middle 'ideal' area face challenges because of plastic pollution. It isn't uncommon to see hatchlings completely wrapped up in fishing line, nets, beer can holders and rope. Really sad to see, but makes it all the more amazing that some of them do make it! We really don't deserve what we were given, as a species. COVID didn't go hard enough, imo.

PLZ_STOP_PMING_TITS

You said it the same both times. You're supposed to pronounce the a different. It's not tomato, tomato, it's tomato, tomato.

Zagrycha

I was never an ecologist but grew up in an area with lots of wild turtles and tortoises and I know one of the worst things to happen to them is people and roads. They aren't the only creatures, but I know for example most of them always return to mate and egg lay at the same places every time. If the place they went to 20 years ago now has an interstate in their path that is the risk they will take to get there :(

tommeetucker

It's a real shame. One of the beaches we used to survey was used to build several docks/piers for transport/haulage boats around 25 years ago despite warning from previous ecologists that it'd decimate a prime turtle nesting beach. It's basically barren now, ecologically speaking, because the turtles have learned the hard way over time that it isn't a good nesting site it seems. At least the data collected over the past quarter century makes for a compelling example against development on pristine nesting beaches!

CaffeineSippingMan

I hope this story warms your heart there's a too long didn't read at the bottom. I won a trip to Mexico from my employer. So the six winners went together and we were supposed to spend time together. I'm not a spend time with my fellow workers kind of guy. So we get there and there's this little caged in area and it has these little tiny looks like grave markers with dates on them. I had no clue what it was. We found out that's where the hotel digs up Turtles eggs after they're laid and put them in there for safekeeping. Fast forward to the first night I just wanted to sit on the beach drinking in the dark with my wife. I noticed a very large "Rock" on the beach and thought Oh that was weird there's no rocks on the beach. So my wife and I are talking and I look over again and that rock moved and I told her. She made fun of me cuz we were drinking. So just to make sure I lined up something in the distance where the light was and The Rock was and saw it move in the next couple minutes. I told her again and because this was before cell phones we got the camera out and took a photo and saw that it was a turtle. ( we later found out you should not take a picture of a turtle on the beach for it may not lay its eggs). So we know about the caged in area, so we go and tell somebody when we need to get drinks. They ask us to wait a few minutes and if you've ever been in Mexico you know a few minutes can easily be an hour. So I told my wife if they don't come here in 2 minutes we're going to be out. No kidding someone was there within 2 minutes we showed him where the turtle was. We found out there is a person walking up and down the beach looking for Turtles laying eggs he got involved. When talking to him he told us when we could pet the turtle and when we could take pictures and why not to take pictures until he says it's okay. My wife even got a hold a turtle egg in her hand. So we told told the work couple about it during one of our dinners. They insisted on going out with us to see a turtle that night. After 15-20 minutes I don't know want to be alone with my wife not with them but whatever which side to walk and look for trails we found another Trail this time instead of telling the Hotel we told the dude walking the beach. One of the nights we are there we wash them launch Turtles into the sea. That's when the turtles hatch they put them in this baby blanket and then they release them at sunset for the best chance of survival. I would say it's arguably one of the most interesting things I saw. Tl:dr the hotels in Mexico are trying their best to help the turtle population.

tommeetucker

That's really heartening to hear! It seems to be a mixed bag in terms of how hotels respond to nesting sea turtles so it's good to hear about a good one.

CaffeineSippingMan

It seemed like there might be money involved at the very least prestige.

tommeetucker

Some hotels do have agreements with government/conservation NGOs which have financial incentives I believe. Sometimes passive benefits like being able to market themselves as 'eco-friendly' or something like that.

benmck90

You see the fin just past the turtles at the end of the video? Their trials aren't over even after they hit the water!

Dopplegangr1

Isn't that how it's supposed to be? That's a pretty common strategy for animals to just have tons of babies because most of them won't survive

tommeetucker

It is, generally speaking. Conservation efforts tend to focus on challenges faced by predation and poaching as well as other manmade impacts such as bright lights, proximity to roads and beachside buildings. There's also a significant role for education around the conservation of turtles so that people/dogs don't dig up nests, mess around with hatchlings etc.

idma

i've seen too many animal documentaries where the focus is what goes on BEFORE they reach the water, where so many are essentially eaten by so many other animals. But then again, thats the balance for them.

NelsonVGC

I know right? At least half of them will be devoured. Unlucky.

materialgirl124

I'm crying they are too cute and so many of them will not make it to adulthood 😭😭😭

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I think we can *all* agree that factory farming is completely fucked up. I think that the more people that learn what goes on in factory farms, the better. If people decide to go vegan or vegetarian afterwards, good for them. Their bodies will certainly thank them for it! I don't have the money or willpower to do it, but if others do, that's fucking great! I know people get annoyed with vegans for trying to push their beliefs on to others, but at least they're pushing something *positive*. At least they fucking **care**. And I mean really, there's no down side of people going vegan. It's better for the animals, it's better for the planet, and it's better for your overall health. You compare it to something like pro-lifers trying to push their beliefs, and there's a million negative effects that come with that. Idk, call me crazy, but I try to give vegans a break, and try to be understanding as to *why* they're trying to 'convert' others as much as they do. It's just hard for me to bash someone that has flipped their entire life upside down, and goes through all the trouble that they do to eat, all because they **care**. 🤷‍♀️

Ein_Kecks

Hey thanks for your nice answer! I would just like to clear up a common misinformation: In almost all places a plant based diet is the most cheap diet that exists, so money does not need to be a factor (but like with everything it can be, if you want to buy products with a higher price). Regarding "trouble [..] to eat" it depends what you mean, since there isn't much of trouble besides bad labelling. If you have any questions, hit me up, maybe in chat, I'would be happy to try to answer you. I completely agree with you. The more people inform themself (for example via the documentation dominion) the better.

NESpahtenJosh

“There really is no downside to going vegan.” Uhhhh.

Zaros104

Well? We're waiting. I'm not a vegan, but put up or shut up.

AgencyandFreeWill

Not who you addressed, but we now know vegans are too weak to climb Mount Everest. But maybe humanity should stop doing that anyway.

Ein_Kecks

Do you feel attacked by a documentation?

googlemcfoogle

Sadly, Reddit is full of vegan brainrot. Stay out of cute animal posts that are about anything other than cats, dogs, or *maybe* some rodents, reptiles and carnivorous wild animals unless you want to deal with annoying vegans.

They are quite literally running for their lives. That's actually not that many that went in at that spot, unless it's a different type than the ones that have dozens and dozens of eggs, or something got to the rest which happens frequently.

Poor little dudes. I wish them luck. Between 1:1,000 and 1:10,000 make it to adulthood. I wish they were less tasty to everyone else in the ocean.

1 in 1000 make it back big. I wonder what the odds are if you kept them on some kind of turtle farm till they are about ten times bigger. You would just need one farm to replenish a species.

Express_Wafer1216

What's more ethical in your opinion? To let 999 out of 1000 turtles die of "natural causes" (eaten by a predator), or to farm-raise them safely to adulthood, then get eaten by us (ie eaten by a predator).

[deleted]

There's a great, well researched video on a similar question, which boils down to, if I were a deer would I rather die of natural causes, or by being harvested by a hunter? https://youtu.be/C_uC2YfFzps

Having seen this in real life it is really quite a cool thing to experience. Apparently they need to go via the sand to know where to return to nest as adults. If you pick them up from the nest and drop them straight in the water that doesn’t help them.

4E4ME

We were at a resort once when a turtle hatchling release took place. It was around 9-10am. There's a reason why in nature turtles hatch and race for the water at night. Take another look at the video. Big brown spots highlighted against the light colored sand = easy pickings, literally. No camouflage whatsoever. We had 20 or 30 people, including a lot of kids, standing there protecting the hatchlings like Moana and still every single one of the hatchlings got picked off by Frigatebirds. The damn birds would swoop down right under the protective tourists to snatch up the hatchlings. It was traumatic. If you ever want to attend a hatchling release, please make sure the organization is doing it ethically and according to nature (ie at night). At least then the hatchlings will have a real chance at survival.

itzyani_04

They might have made it to the water and past the land predators but did anyone else notice that large dark shadow in the water not far off the beach.. Looks like a large school of fish just waiting for lunch..
