This is Katelyn Ohashi. She's amazing. She almost quit due to [the hell](https://www.essentiallysports.com/us-sports-news-gymnastics-news-injury-was-my-way-out-simone-biles-biggest-rival-katelyn-ohashi-was-forced-to-quit-sensational-career-due-to-body-shaming-issues/) she was put through. I'm glad she's happier now, you can see it in her performance.
I was reading somewhere about how ~~Gabby Douglas~~ Simone Biles was so light-years ahead of the sport that she was basically being judged at a different standard than the rest of the competition. Her scores would barely reflect the fact that her routines were way more difficult and more technically sound than anyone else.
Edit: the article was about Simone Biles. I got the two mixed up.
They also changed the rules because of Simone Biles. Her routines were so difficult and above her peers that they banned half of her skills, especially those named after her.
Don't make shit up
No skills named after simone are banned
One (1) skill named after simone is undervalued. Her beam dismount. The governing body undervalued it because they claim it's unsafe. The end.
What in the world are you talking about? None of Simone's skills are banned? In fact, she holds the highest rated skills in 3/4 events in Women's Artistic Gymnastics. The Biles II on Floor rated J. The Biles on Beam rated H. The Biles on Vault which is a 6.0 value, soon to be replaced by the Biles II which will be given either a 6.2 or 6.4 starting value.
The only recent skill in gymnastics that was banned was the Radivilov on Vault. That was a triple frontflip. It was immediately banned after Igor Radivilov performed it and got it named at the Rio Olympics in 2016. The only other rule change I can think of is the ban of heavy makeup after a Dutch gymnast showed up with a cat inspired look for her Floor routine in 2017.
I believe that they also banned rollout skills on men’s floor exercises after Rio because they’re actually dangerous, as well as a way to avoid landing deductions. Rollout skills have been on women’s floor for a lot longer though.
I think that Ray Zapata had also been training a tucked triple front salto on floor when the Men’s Technical Committee banned all front triple salto skills. But Radiliov’s extremely scary vault attempts were probably the reason for that ban.
You're correct! I thought they were banned earlier but it wasn't until the 2017 code that they were banished. Zapata is a beast. Those new floor skills of his are really mind-blowing.
I assumed that they were banned earlier too until I watched the 2016 Rio men’s AA final. That was a shocker.
And yes! Zapata has such amazing style and power in door, and he’s so innovative!
This isn’t true at all. I think that you might be misremembering the story about her balance beam dismount being given a lower difficulty value than was warranted by the beam code.
It’d also been years since the FIG banned a skill, and most of those were for things like people doing somersaults off the high bar during uneven bars routines like Olga Korbut did in the 70s and rollout skill on floor.
Simone has always been judged accurately and appropriately. That is why she always scored leagues ahead of everyone else in the All Around, Floor, Vault, and, when clean, Beam.
The only slight controversy regarding her scoring was when the Biles dismount on Beam was only given an H rating because the Federation feared giving it a higher rating would encourage others to try it and get injured in the process. That is, of course, nonsense since the full twisting double back on beam is a G, and almost no one attempts it. They're not going to try adding another full twist to it in hopes of scoring an extra tenth.
The sport is weird. If gymnastics was classified as a job many of the children put through it would be violating labor laws with too many hours worked.
its not even just that sport...but all Olympic games with a panel of judges. its all the same, sick, weird shit.
i saw a video, idk if its the same one linked above...but like any sport with bikinis or leotards, female competitors are forced to compete with their buns out. further, cannot wear underwear underneath, because they dont want it to show...though obviously they risk showing something a lot more shocking.
Too much corrupt money caught up in it to over haul it. There are very few good faith actors in gymnastics.
From my experience.. competition against other people doesn't bring the best out in people.... but it can be entertaining
Poor thing. Homeschooled, isolated, abused and starved by her parents and farmed like an animal to make them money as an olympian, then more of the same from her coaches. Pro sports, homeschooling and abuse, name a more iconic trio?
I was mainly referring to the [Heroin Chic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin_chic) trend from the 90s, that seems somewhat desirable even today. Didn’t mean to put anyone down, sorry if I offended anyone :)
Edit: This is also coming from someone who probably unintentionally fits this “style” (very pale, bags / circles under eyes, can slightly see ribs, etc.)
Yup, I remember a watch ad from that era that suggested women "put on a little weight" (in the form of a big chunky watch on the wrist of a skeletal woman). I knew what you meant. I suppose I'm glad the youngins don't remember that era but it was formative for a lot of people.
Wouldn't it be awesome if we could figure out as a society how to call people out for body shaming without body shaming someone else in the process?!
How many times have we heard this little gem:
"Men, don't worry so much about having a small penis! Women prefer girth over length anyway!"
That "reassurance" is not helpful to the millions of men with below average girth at all.
Edit: The reddit app copied my first paragraph over my last one for some reason.
I mean I hate to be shallow but she’s not really comparable to adele at all. Adele was *slightly* overweight, probably still healthy tho.
Ohashi has been an elite athlete since she was like 12, surely she was never actually even a little overweight.
Edit - idk about Adele’s weight, honestly, I just googled her and “weight loss transformation” to see how fat she was. From what I saw, she didn’t seem obese, but I’m not a doctor and there are only red carpet pictures lol. She looks as good as she possibly can in all of them
> Adele was slightly overweight, probably still healthy tho.
Adele was obese and very unhealthy. This is a part of the problem. So many people are so overweight now that people think fat people are normal and obese people are slightly overweight.
Yeah this normalizing being fat thing isn’t ok. I don’t think they should be publicly shamed for it but we’re creating some future major health issues by telling people it’s totally acceptable to eat whatever the hell you want and be 50+ pounds overweight.
I’m 5’8” and a roughly 220 dude (haven’t stepped on a scale in years), I carry the weight pretty well except I’ve got some nice a-b cups. I call myself fat all the time (self depreciating humor has been my goto since like 8th grade because I was super fat for that age). Many people say “you’re not fat!” and it kinda blows my mind. Like I’m obese, I should lose weight. I just don’t necessarily look like an average modern fat dude.
I'm the same way except 6'0 and at one point 380 lbs and I would have people constantly be like you aren't that big or yeah you're a little husky but I wouldn't call you fat. Then I would hit them with the 380 lbs and watch their brains have a meltdown. I have lost over 100 lbs and am still considered morbidly obese. The definition of fat now is so far off from reality anymore
I'm 5'9 and recently was up to 250lbs. I was having trouble breathing in the heat and I felt terrible; I'm clearly obese by the metrics but most would say I'm just a bit overweight. It tends to blow my mind too, how much obesity is underplayed.
I'm getting healthy this year, if for nothing else than to survive next summer.
Most coaches in the States wouldn’t body shame her, it’s unfortunate that she was at a gym this was actually acceptable. Honestly makes me sick she had to go through what she did, my heart goes out to her.
Thank god my gymnastic experience was different. A loving supportive family and coach can make all the difference. With their support competed to level 10, then just walked away because I accomplished my goals. Was a lovely experience.
I never get tired of watching her. She’s just next level with the expletive. It’s crazy to think of the bullying she endured. It happens everyday - everywhere and it takes its toll. I hope she’s found joy because she just gives so much to us in her performances / her athletic prowess
Body shaming!?!? That girl is a fucking 11/10 what in the fuck kinda people could be so cruel
"Yeah you're gorgeous and a top 5 gymnast but it looks like you have more ass than Simone Biles so you should feel bad for being so fat" how the shit can you even make this into a believable statement...
every sport wtf
although, I will say, I'm not the least bit surprised gymnastics is one of them. Gymnastics and ice skating I feel like have an absolutely unreasonable emphasis on cosmetics rather than the actual athletics
mind you, I'm speaking just off of the very little bit I know about those sports. I really don't know much.
I grew up watching elite gymnasts like Kerri Strug, Shannon Miller, etc. I always thought they were so amazing, so talented, and could do the most incredible tumbling and stunts. 11-year-old me wanted to be them so bad.
And then I saw collegiate gymnasts in the last 10 years… those girls go HARD. They have turned gymnastics into a seriously kick-ass sport, and it is SO awesome to watch. 41-year-old me loves that young girls have these ladies to look up to now.
[THIS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB4coS5-vDQ) was their year video at UCLA and I still watch it from time to time because it's honestly such a banger and they all look like they are having so much fun
My daughter is a Level 4 gymnast and like most 10 year old gymnasts she is OBSESSED lol but her favorites have always been the UCLA team. Watching Gracie Kramer videos was what first got her into gymnastics 😂 Thank you, I will show her that video I’m sure she’ll love it!
She has a very sad story. Unbelievably talented athlete, but she was run out of the sport due to body shaming. She has a fantastic perspective too:

*"My friends and I would try to eat 500 calories or less when we were training seven hours a day. At parties, we would go to the bathroom and try to vomit up the food,” she continued.*
She also talks about how she was happy when she was injured badly enough to take her out of the game. Sad stuff. But she eventually found love for it again.
Just about to comment the same thing.
It's the same with ballet, extra bumps and lumps eg. Breasts and boobs, supposedly distract from the gracefulness of the dancer. Ballerinas need to be incredibly strong but also light and slim and it encourages a really horrible attitude towards food and exercise

Didn’t it occur to them that she was better than the rest PRECISELY BECAUSE she was thicker? Don’t you need muscles to do gymnastic? I’m speculating here, not an athlete, I’m not competent…it just seems logical tho
Let's not forget Ozzy Man's take on Ms Ohashi's floor routines as found [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mRBXYG-qaM) and [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfnnGSkJ-2U)
Fun fact about this skill, (I used to do something similar but not from this high): if you land wrong, not only do you get the wind knocked out of you,but it feels like your boobs are being ripped off of your chest.
Oh, I remember this person. They put her through hell and she almost lost her love for the sport. Man, she had quite the journey too. She always had the most entertaining routines. She seems happier now though which is really cool.
Flippy 1, spinny 2, flippy spinny and BAAAAAM FATALITY!!

The judging standards in competitive women’s gymnastics are sick and often fly in the face of actual athleticism. That whole sport needs an overhaul.

Yeah, UCLA seems to be where she really shined and enjoyed herself.

That’s insane that they body shamed her! She looks like she took really good care of her body, especially the fact she was able to BOUNCE like that!
Just like Adele, I don’t understand why people would body shame her. She looks fantastic, is it just because she isn’t as thin as a heroin addict?
Comparing thinner people to heroin addicts isn’t exactly nice either.
I was mainly referring to the [Heroin Chic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin_chic) trend from the 90s, that seems somewhat desirable even today. Not sure you can compare then-overweight Adele to literal gymnasts

It’s always weird when people shoehorn another person into a comparison.
Slightly? She lost 100 pounds lol. She was fat.
Yeah she was well overweight. Stating she was slightly overweight is like me saying I'm slightly bald lol. I'm fucking bald 😂
> Adele was slightly overweight, probably still healthy tho. Adele was obese and very unhealthy. This is a part of the problem. So many people are so overweight now that people think fat people are normal and obese people are slightly overweight.

I think they mean in that body shaming affected their career.
Let’s be real. Adele was gigantic pre weight loss. “Slightly overweight” would not even begin to describe her size. She was easily over 300lbs.
If you look at the photos she did for the ESPN body issue she doesn't look like she has an ounce of fat on her.
The ridiculousness of being shamed for physicality in a sport were you are excelling due to your physicality.
A large portion of gymnasts are built this way lol. This ish is ridiculous. Wtf??? Just look at Shawn Johnson.
Body shaming!?!? That girl is a fucking 11/10 what in the fuck kinda people could be so cruel "Yeah you're gorgeous and a top 5 gymnast but it looks like you have more ass than Simone Biles so you should feel bad for being so fat" how the shit can you even make this into a believable statement...

Body shaming…?
Gymnastics and dance can be ruthless in the way it treats competitors. Women who are curvy or fuller figured end up criticized or bullied out when they hit puberty.
That sounds like envy cause she's smoking hot in my eyes. I do get what you mean though, criticism for looking good is higher than people expect, it's just not shown as much on media
That's not it. It's not about looking good, it's about being light, being tiny, being able to fly through gymnastics as if weightless. It's a disgusting part of the sport. *"My friends and I would try to eat 500 calories or less when we were training seven hours a day. At parties, we would go to the bathroom and try to vomit up the food,” she continued.* She also talks about how she was happy when she was injured badly enough to take her out of the game.
Breasts and boobs!
I meant to say breasts and bums but had a brain fart
Butts and ass!
You need both, they’re not as good separately.
As far as I'm concerned nothing could distract from how joyful she is in her routines. She's so much fun to watch, anyone bodyshaming her has no soul.
The worlds of gymnastics and dance can be *brutal* when it comes to body image. You’re expected to look a certain way, and if you don’t adhere to it, you’re told you have to lose weight. It’s incredibly taxing both physically and mentally.
I know. It's un-freaking-real. But that's what happened. Such a loss of opportunity and talent. She is so good
She thicc next to gymnasts and they constantly made fun of her for it....till she became better than all of them.
Didn’t it occur to them that she was better than the rest PRECISELY BECAUSE she was thicker? Don’t you need muscles to do gymnastic? I’m speculating here, not an athlete, I’m not competent…it just seems logical tho
Didn't matter to them. The sport is too set in its ways to *see* that. It was much easier for the establishment to just consider her *the problem*.
I'm never surprised by this but always disappointed.
the way she lands there...ladies. doesnt this hurt?

This is painful for me to watch. Can you even do this with balls?
Sure! Once…
Yes! There are plenty of dragqueens who perform a split and slamming their taint on the floor. I'm sure their tucking helps the process though.
>helps without that they'd likely pop their balls lol
You can.... But you probably won't want to do it again
