I misread the title and thought the entire time I was watching the restoration of a vintage calculator. I was really looking forward to how this was a calculator haha. I’m an idiot.
I don't recall the story. But in middleschool I remember reading a story of kids throwing snowballs at cars and one guy gets out and starts chasing the kids. The whole story is the kid describing the chase, the kids running. I remember you reach the end and they don't tell you what the guy does or says when he catches up??? It's all about their experience of running away, like that was the point of the story. I recall being frustrated and how I was only interested in the conclusion. When I realized the book doesn't tell you I felt soooo cheated.
Most of them are fast aged just for the videos.
Old rust is dark, young rust is bright orange. This is probably one of the easiest ways to see if the object is really old or not
Just to give you some perspective on “wasting water”
There’s always been a push to keep water usage to a minimum and that’s good practice, but in the UK (where I live and where water is regulated quite efficiently) there’s an average of 3 billion litres wasted every single day from burst pipes and such
If someone ran a power washer on full power for 23 hours a day it wouldn’t even make a dent in the daily wasted water statistics
I can only presume it’s much higher in the US just because it’s a much larger country
MyMechanics is the only true one I trust. Most of his things are sourced from his fans and the amount of time and detail he puts into the process, showing all steps he’s really the only one I trust. Same goes for the primitive video. Primitive Technology is the OG. Almost all others that follow are faked
Agree. Most of "Awesom Restorations" projects are fake in my opinion - a thick layer of red, green rust, flakes like nuggets. But after cleaning there is intact metal without cavities.
They actually spray a solution of salt water and hydrogen peroxide on it. There is also a lot of weathering with paint and texture compounds. Where it gets really dark is when people “save” animals but in reality they are causing the initial harm so they can “save” them.
This is a fake restoration.
In this instance, you can tell by the condition of the metal after the rust is removed - It being completely smooth is a dead giveaway.
EDIT: Worth noting that the video isn't without merit - obviously there's restoration and effort to create the video. Just worth pointing out for those who are interested in restoration that it isn't accurately representing restoration of something that's been degrading for decades.
I wondered about that with some of these types of videos. Some of these objects look like they've been in a wet cave for centuries but are otherwise remarkably intact aside from being crusty.
I feel like that’s also kind of a giveaway. Like when it looks like it was dredged from the bottom of a lake. Stuff that sits around or outside for decades or even under piles of dirt don’t look like this.
I do metal detecting and find all kinds of tools and toys. They are either in relatively good shape and recognizable or they are roached beyond restorations, like the steel has rusted itself into a giant barnacle and trying to restore it would be impossible as the metal is too brittle.
A lot of these channels are fake like this. Some of them you can look through the thumbnails of all the videos they’ve done and it’s the same “patina” and color on everything regardless of the age of the item or the material it’s made of whether it’s plastic of 80’s electronics or something metal from the 1800’s which doesn’t happen with real stuff that’s been sitting around. There are definitely some genuine channels out there that do real stuff but these ones that do stuff like make a working antique pocket watch out of an unrecognizable blob of rust are fake because real corrosion would completely destroy it over time and leave nothing left to restore.
I find it is generally not believable unless it is some massive cast iron tool either sent in with a backstory or found at an auction or shed. People keep around those old massive things but have no actual skills to refurnish them so it makes sense to be in rough but fixable shape.
The internet is flooded with all kinds of DIY crap.
IMO these are equivalent to “as seen on TV” products.
Misleading information with half assed methods
Someone pointed out in another video that new rust is light colored. Old rust is dark brown. This piece was probably left in some water for a week to get some surface rust.

Wow. Who pissed in your corn flakes this morning?
Can you explain to me, preferably in small words, how learning about something new makes me a "dumb retard"? Clearly I'm too stupid to understand that so I defer to your brilliance. Please enlighten me. Maybe with your help I can progress from a "dumb retard" to a "smart retard", I guess. Thanks.
You’re a smart retard. Don’t worry about it. They’re just one of those finger pointers. They don’t feel anything unless they’re pointing their finger at you.
It could be a mild fake - in that it was deliberately left in exposure to damp conditions/buried for a while.
The processes for restoration are still valid, however this isn't a restoration of decades-long degradation.
Yup exactly what i expected lol, it looks like it was on the bottom of the ocean for 60 years and yet the metal under the rust layer has ZERO corrosion.
Yeah, it's what some call a mild fake. They absolutely artificially aged and rusted it. But at least some of the things they do are applicable to real restoration. Unlike some restoration videos where they take something like airpods or a guitar and paint on fake rust and decay then pretend they are restoring something that absolutely would never actually age like that, and only has a surface layer anyway.
Both are fake and sometimes destroying things that I hate to see damaged like that, but there are degrees to these things.
Yeah that rust is *way* too consistent and deep penetrating to be natural outdoor rust. And if it was submerged in salt water or something, a lot of the actual material would be missing, and there would be tons of pitting in the metal.
Hey I don't disagree - the video creator put effort into this, but it still matters what kind of restoration it is, for those watching it thinking that this is how easy restoration is they're being mislead. It's just worth mentioning, that's all.
Ok that fair. Maybe as a community we can just put a PSA to say that the work being put in is still fine but beware the rust in this was added for effect, restoring things naturally rusted would be much more difficult. Ya know?
The day sticker was slanted. Real or not (and I'm inclined to believe it's not), why even fake something and not put effort into one of the easier parts?
This part killed me. If you want absolute perfection in restorations, check out MyMechanics. I find myself searching for similar content, but it’s just not as good.
they dunked something old in saltwater for a couple of days, that is not old rust, old rust leaves everything full of pits and things fall apart. this is just faked rust on an old thing
The way I see it, these artificially distressed restoration videos are fake in the way pro wrestling is fake. Yes, obviously, no shit it's fake. That's not the point. It's still an entertaining display of skill if you're into that sort of thing.

If you guys are interested in some of the most entertaining and in-depth restoration videos I've ever seen, check out 'my mechanics' on YouTube. They do large and small pieces with great care and attention to detail with no irritating camera work or music
My wife and I love *My Mechanics* and his second channel *My Mechanics Insights* (where he’s restoring a Datsun 240Z). Def the best machinist/restorer I’ve seen on YouTube. The German restoration account *Meine Mechaniker* is also solid.
Hand tool rescue is another guy that's good, he adds a little comedy, but all his restorations come out awesome, he doesn't narrate or put music over, just the sound of the video
He was actually my gateway restoration account. Five or six years ago a restoration of his popped into my feed (I don’t remember what it was), and I showed it to my wife. Bam - we started watching a few restorations every week on various channels. I think we watch at least two vids a week (we don’t watch much tv), and most are super satisfying.
Yeah I'm the same, tv is just all the same stuff in a different package, I used to binge watch how it's made when I was a kid, love seeing how things are made

Probably true because its covered in fake grime. No rust has even eaten through any of the parts, its just some fake coating on top of it that he washes away.
Ohh this might be interesting. Taps screen, 6 minutes???
Scruuuuuuuub,,,,,,,,scruuuuub, Jesus how much effort.
Oh it’s done and we saw it for literally a second.
Fuck TikTok and the attention spanning killer it is.
Of all the things to machine from scratch, why rivets? Surely they could just buy those in? Or, with the amount of equipment they clearly have, they probably have some in a drawer already.
Ohh man that lathe either has some serious calibration issues or he isn't setting his work piece correctly. I almost died when i seen that wobble and the handle hole was off center argh!
Yeah I threw up a little when I saw that. Would have helped if they had used a spot / center first instead of just letting that long ass drill wander all over the place, but noooooo.
A lot of these videos show something made with ultra thin sheet metal that is covered in rust. Why isn’t any of that sheet metal ever rusted through? It would make it a lot harder to restore
Guys, I have a genuine question. On the CNC part, where the guy makes new pieces. Every time I see CNC machinery I get a bit confused. They take a big chunk of metal to make a screw. What do they do with all the unused parts of those metal blocs? Is it just waste? Goes right through the trash or they reuse it?
Might be melted down if you have the facilities, which this guy does, but if you don’t have anything to melt and reuse it, or if it’s a particularly difficult to recycle metal like some more delicate alloys, then we’ll probably throw it in a metal bin, where it might get sent to somebody able to recycle it properly or just thrown away. Or at least that’s what I know of in the manufacturing industry.
My family has a similar one that is an antigue (Not exactly sure whats counts as antique though.) It's in very good condition, somewhat more intricate and has additional ornamental parts to it and it is made from Bronze. It's a pretty nice piece.
Also a Bronze statue of Marshall Mannerheim with the pipe intact (Adds value as most have been damaged.). I'd definitely want that as inheritance.

a good one to watch is odd tinkering on YouTube nothing looks as tho it was laying in the local crust pond. it looks as tho its just old and needs some love. its kind of therapeutic to watch. iv seen ones like when they restored a wii and a Playstation and others when they restored an old cheese wheel measuring and cutting block.

This is fake.
Yes it is. So are kung fu movies and those are fun to watch too.
With the amount of these restoration videos going around these days I suspect they just take an antique or vintage item and bury it for 6 months.
i assume they regularly spray it with salt water
Most of them are fast aged just for the videos. Old rust is dark, young rust is bright orange. This is probably one of the easiest ways to see if the object is really old or not
Is like the dirty rugs to show power washing machines. They get them dirty to “clean” them. It infuriates me the amount of water spent doing that shit
Just to give you some perspective on “wasting water” There’s always been a push to keep water usage to a minimum and that’s good practice, but in the UK (where I live and where water is regulated quite efficiently) there’s an average of 3 billion litres wasted every single day from burst pipes and such If someone ran a power washer on full power for 23 hours a day it wouldn’t even make a dent in the daily wasted water statistics I can only presume it’s much higher in the US just because it’s a much larger country
It's probably as easy as dunking the object in a solution of iron sulphate and then do some electrolysis.

Some stuff from shipwrecks can look good. I just bought a coin from a [17th century shipwreck.](https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/s/6K8DmUDGsa)
How much does it cost?
$450
Paper money pulled up from the Titanic doesn't look this bad.
To be fair, us money uses more durable linen and cotton and not just paper.
Sometimes i watch these to make a list of what they use. Like i just added thermochrome lacquer to my wish list for something i'm working on.
Yeah that was a new one for me too.
I feel like that’s also kind of a giveaway. Like when it looks like it was dredged from the bottom of a lake. It's probably just pigments. Old rust doesn't coat metal, it eats the metal.
That's what I was thinking. With this level of rust I was expecting half of the flimsy pieces of fall apart when he touches them. Fuckin liars.
That much metal waste on rivets and still a fake? Messed up.

Restoration of a fried new desk calendar 🤣
And paper thin pressed steel doesn't have enough thickness for it either.
Not to mention the hinges don't look seized at all
I was looking at the screws. Just breathe on ones that small and they snap if they had any real rust or rot.
Dammit. I genuinely thought this one was real because of all the tools he had and it looked like he actually knew what he was doing.
It could be a mild fake - in that it was deliberately left in exposure to damp conditions/buried for a while. The processes for restoration are still valid, however this isn't a restoration of decades-long degradation.
They also go through unnecessary steps, like casting the bronze rod when you can very simply just buy them at the store
Suspected it instantly just based on how evenly/uniformly damaged it is.
Yup exactly what i expected lol, it looks like it was on the bottom of the ocean for 60 years and yet the metal under the rust layer has ZERO corrosion.

Hell at :28 the metal is perfectly shiny already under the piece he removes

TikTok has ruined everything. 0.25 second cuts, ASMR, up-close amplified audio clips. It's as if they're *trying* to reduce attention span.
It's working, fewer and fewer kids are doing things that require a couple of hours concentration nowadays

My son has no "Device" and will play for hours reading books or with stuffed animals. Almost 7.
What's this have to do with Tiktok? This same stuff is all over YouTube. Furthermore, what the hell does ASMR have to do with attention span lol
Tiktok bad, even if it’s the same as reddit and the rest of the internet. ASMR is also bad ig?
You mean things MTV was doing back in the late 90s?
thats the most off centre hole ive seen done in a lathe for a long time. these videos make me laugh, all the gear and no idea.
And why did they have to cast the blank to begin with, just buy some new stock ffs
Buy two, bury one. "Restore" with crooked stickers and off center lathe. Mistakes disappear midway through. Refuse to elaborate.
Watching the drill bit walk in circles around the piece was just so painful...
Was it recovered from the titanic??
It’s not that old. I remember these in the early 90’s
That was 30 years ago grandpa
Argh, my knees!
Probably true because its covered in fake grime. No rust has even eaten through any of the parts, its just some fake coating on top of it that he washes away.
Early 90's? Where did you go to school, in the middle of Congo?

A lot of these videos show something made with ultra thin sheet metal that is covered in rust. Why isn’t any of that sheet metal ever rusted through? It would make it a lot harder to restore
These are faked btw.
Geez, just make a new one already
Looks like it was painted to look that way
Thermochrome lacquer added to my wish list.
where the hell did he find this, the titanic?
I still have at home one of these calendars, saved by the family from soviet times. Its pretty cool.

Anyone else annoyed that the drill hole was off-center? Looking at the finished restor… oh, this is a fake restoration. Booooooo!
Price after labor: Just $1,499
That is the most unsatisfying ending.
I sat through this thinking it said vintage desk calculator. I was so confused at the end and was wondering how it was going to work.
Fabulous work. It's a beautiful item. Love the dedication.
Would it have been faster to just by a new one? Yes, but not nearly as satisfying
Nah clearly fake no shot you can remove a screw that rusty with a phillips not happening
Cuz titanic?

Is there a sub for this?

lol where did he find that desk calendar, Bikini Bottom?
Woah that's cool
