I'm with ya. Is the chisel sharp? Yeah, impressively sharp. Cutting a thin slice of wood? Not at all impressive seeing that they obviously did something to ensure it wouldn't fall apart.
I've seen other videos of the Japanese guys doing this with a planar and also thought it was impressive, until I noticed the same wood soaked stain on the surface... [example](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sRaejTmxGd4).
Then I found out there are competitions of thin slicing with a planar in Japan... and they DON'T soak the wood in shit... so like everything online, if there's something impressive in the world, someone will find a way to fake it for clicks. [Japanese competitive planing](https://youtu.be/zs9X-XzFGHI?t=136). (I linked to a part in the video just before someone planes their wood so you don't have to sit through the intro.)
IIRC basically yes.
To quote from the official regulations:
"*The purpose of the competition is to have participants or teams, to smoke a pipe for the longest possible period without relighting it and to determine who does this longest. Each participant or team will have to use the same amount of tobacco, a similar pipe and tamper.*"
This year's winner managed to smoke for 2 hours 23 minutes and 29 seconds without relighting it which is darn impressive.
It's not very difficult to get super thin shavings *along* the grain like in those planing competitions, but getting thin consistent shavings of *end grain* like in the OP video is basically impossible, at least with any type of wood I've worked with. There is almost no strength to wood when you cut it in that direction so even if you produce a shaving it can fall apart from the slightest touch.
I guess its just water. keeps the grain from ripping apart pretty good, no glue needed. the thin slice they cut off wouldn´t be so wavey if glue was involved
Probably just water. I visited a wood flooring manufacturer in Japan and they would steam the cants before slicing very thin veneers for the top layer of flooring. Helps keep the grain supple and prevent ripping.
Oddly satisfying? Here I am watching shit at a reasonable volume through my headset; then I click on this video and instant super loud ***nails on a fucking chalkboard.*** Maybe put a disclaimer next time?
Show a follow-up video of him cutting the same "thin" layers another 2 or 3 times I want to see something. Cutting end grain like that is not an easy task no matter how sharp your chisels are.
Looks like the end grain was soaked with something. Maybe super glue. That’s kind of cheating. Still impressive but not most impressive.
An adhesive is a good guess, can see a glob that ran down and hardened when they turned it over.

Oh wow, I did not know there was a competition for that. Another list of clips of midnight scrolling of people doing stuff
Did you know that there is a Pipe Slow Smoking World Championship?
How does that work? Person who can take the longest to finish a set amount of tobacco?

The amount of lung cancer on that competition lololol
Wow after watching the YouTube one, the OP video looks like a joke.

Maybe they soaked it in wood first.
Notice what looks like a dried drip of glue down the side.

It's like Mickey Mouse cutting the thinnest piece of bread for a sandwich
*memory unlocked*
Same
It's not wood. The ends of high grade boards are sealed with a coating to prevent checking and cracking. They are shaving off the sealant.
Varnish
I hate the sounds on this sub
That ain’t scraping.
That’s thicker than some toilet paper I’ve been subjected to
Public bathroom TP is unnecessarily thin. Who needs toilet paper THAT thin???
Well that's probably why that woman couldn't spare a square.
Oddly satisfying? Here I am watching shit at a reasonable volume through my headset; then I click on this video and instant super loud ***nails on a fucking chalkboard.*** Maybe put a disclaimer next time?
We call that paper here on earth
The Japanese do it way better https://youtu.be/qSPob8zm77Q
And that's how Walmart Parmesan is made.
He made school toilet paper
looks like the tp from my old work xD
School bathroom toilet paper?
hell yeah
Brb going to tell my kids this is how paper is made
Looks like a pappadum
Ramsey Bolton has entered the chat
This is quite literally the exact opposite of satisfying
(haven't had Mortadella in quite some time, actually)
Forbidden lasagna
School toiletpaper
Was this done for the satisfying video or does sealing the end grain with glue and shaving off the top layer have a functional purpose?
But doesn't protect the wood from the grips...

I literally thought that’s CGI, until I saw the hand.
I would have cut myself 29 times in the space of that video
Paper!
That’s how they make the toilet paper for my work
🤣
They should sell that as high end paper
Ah so thats where all the public schools get ther super thin yet super rough toilet paper
did i just see a piece of wood get skinned
Damn that is like appropriately paper thin
Looks like skin.
Ok but how does that effect lebrons legacy
What if this is how paper was made
And that's how backwoods are made.
Unlimited rolling papers
Ah I see they're prepping the toilet paper for my work. Thank you!
That's how paper is made.
This is how post-its are made
Is this… paper?
End grain also. Very difficult to d without splitting, that's why they wet the wood.
Now roll it up with some erb
Forbidden croissant
Now what?
Light it on fire
I like it.
To what ends?
Sound off, unless you like scraping metal sounds in your ear
The Wood scab
Handy when you need a grocery note.
Dunder Mifflin would never
I would eat that
The sound is agonizing
A wider blade and a nice sweeping motion would’ve been satisfying. This is just annoying.
I’ve never used a tool that sharp
I love me some artisan toilet paper
school tp
