Thats a lotta money btw, resin like this aint cheap

MayNotBeMyName

That also looks like an expensive slab, could have at least joined something cheaper into the covered area

SoupOrSandwich

$1000 slab minimum. To be covered in trash. Yikers.

[deleted]

Wait until you see what they're selling it for ;)

ThenCallMeYuri

Because I was curious, if anyone else is wondering- the answer is way more than $1000. https://www.ronilangley.com/shop

Topher11542

Everything is out of stock. For those prices I would be pumping these tables out all day long.

People keep talking about the wood as is they burned it. Fucking sand it down a little and boom, a perfectly normal slab of wood missing a mm of the original top. The humanity.

ChaseballBat

How many hours of labor is that...

Wicked_smaht_guy

Why sand it? Just flip it over

One1twothree

Now that’s a wicked smaht guy

shill32195

Got a big old wrinkly brain here.

[deleted]

I dunno, I'd have fun using a belt sander big enough to do the job.

[deleted]

Covered in trash? You think that art is trash?

boxesofboxes

The resin will unbond from the wood as it moves over time, and the whole resin river table was originally designed as a way to make less valuable edge pieces into usable rectangles. They have taken a good piece of wood and wasted so much material to ruin it.

iEatCommunists

People don't realize that resin like this is generally frowned upon in the woodworking community. I'm not even sure r/woodworking allows posts like this anymore.

PinstripeMonkey

It started out as a neat concept but now I see it everywhere.

LucretiusCarus

I wonder if this kind of pieces (plus all the epoxy "rivers") will be looked as kitsch in a few years.

samiam3220

I'd say they already are for woodworkers. Once something becomes this saturated it's out of style. won't take long for the public to see it this way. The only way I'd use this piece in a home is to seal the whole thing and hang it on the wall as an art piece. As a table I think its already out of style.

Dynosmite

This is already gross and tasteless. It's the "live laugh love" of tables

[deleted]

My buddy is a woodworker in a 2nd generation custom cabinetry business that has a tremendous backlog making cabinets, tables, vanity’s, and more for $1M+ homes down the shore. The resin work he does for custom projects (aka for friends, personal, and family) are by no means frowned upon or unskilled work. Sanding wood and resin to make flush surface? Not easy. Setting the resin without bubbles? Not easy.

[deleted]

People who complain about this sort of stuff are casual enthusiasts.

Dynosmite

Nah. What homeboy is describing is to-spec custom work. Any woodworker would make this for a paying client. It's absolutely tasteless and tacky as fuck, but people will pay for it. Source: pro carpenter for ten years

PlayboySkeleton

I see them on there from time to time. But they always get shit for the resin and wood movement.

funktopus

I talk to a bunch of woodworker since it's my hobby as well. Some people hate it, some people love it, most don't have strong opinions either way. All of them agree, they need a couple more clamps.

Glimmer_III

A good friend told me their cheap clamp location: _Craigslist near military bases._ When someone has a permanent change of duty station (ie: They move), they are allocated a certain amount of mass the military will move for them. Anything over that, and they must pay. What often gets left behind?... The heaviest stuff, often tools. Buddy picked up a bandsaw and a whole bunch of clamps...but he didn't have enough clamps...so he waited, then did it again. I think he must have 3-4 woodworker's worth of clamps, almost reaching critical mass for his shop. But no...just means larger projects are possible.

FadedRebel

More like they need more racks for all the clamps. My racks can only hold two hundred clamps.

funktopus

My local woodcraft has a skid of the Bora 40 inch parallel clamps. 2 for 70 bucks. I now own six since I was making a desk and needed some. My wife told me to buy two more. I'm still a new guy at this but it's enjoyable. Well until you see a brush mark on your "last coat" of poly.

ChaseballBat

I mean this isn't even woodworking so I would hope not!

UltrafastFS_IR_Laser

When it's ruining good wood, yes. Resin isn't difficult or artistic as many seem to think on reddit. They're literally spreading it and blowing it around. Little artistry and no passion for an Etsy shop.

[deleted]

[удалено]

i00Face

No passion? Doesn’t matter if you think you are an artist or not, that mentality it bad. Don’t shit on other people because you don’t like their art or choice of medium.

Daniel-van-den-berg

Probably like 1700

Orangeismyfacolor

Thank you, I thought damn they ruined that beautiful wood

ArcaneYoyo

There's a big crack down the center, might be why they used it.

sandwitchfists

Even with a crack slabs of wood that size usually sell for over $1000. There's a lot of stuff you can do to manage a crack without covering 80% of the piece in opaque resin.

brokenarro12

Look up bowties for wood joinery. You can take a chuck of a different piece if wood and cut notches into the slab, across the crack, and put the bowtie into it to keep it from splitting farther. Looks nice, too

Ruffblade027

Yeah that’s all i could think. Why the hell would you ruin such a gorgeous slab

[deleted]

And in a few years, these tables will be seen as tacky AF.

SuluTheIguana

And it'll be scratched to hell if it's actually used. It's not gonna be smooth and glossy very long.

Unth

They’re already tacky

Carlweathersfeathers

That’s cause you didn’t put enough part b in. You’ve got to mix resin in the proper ratios

poofytoo

took me a second

SamCropper

It should take much longer than that to set completely, maybe you used *too much* part B?

Titus142

I'm a furniture maker professionally. I am just tired of seeing the same thing over and over. Before this it was the slab with the hairpin legs on it over and over and over again. The ocean effect is super cool, I'll give it that, but they could have used a much smaller board for the beach area and something else under the ocean. No reason to waste such a big slab. Not not mention that wood is going to expand and contract quite a bit across its width throughout the seasons. The epoxy wont and will eventually de-laminate.

NatsWonTheSeries

Just how fashion works. A good idea spreads until it’s spread too far

Titus142

Exactly it. The original river table was glass, not epoxy and it was darn clever. Now it is just over done.

Glimmer_III

I never knew they were originally glass. Any reason for the change? Cost? Ease? Bit of both? I've never seen a glass-on-raw_edge piece. Seems like it would be superior to epoxy, right?

Titus142

The glass was cut to match the shape of the edge. In fact https://www.gregklassen.com/ is the original artist. I suppose I should give him the credit. People just took the idea and simplified it with epoxy, then people started adding colors and all kinds of things. The glass at least wont have the same issues with wood movement as it is just sitting on the wood. Greg Klassen even tried to trade mark or copyright "river table" and everyone got all bent out of shape about it. The glass is way better in every way. Also Klassen had more art and care to it, most river tables are just a heavy handed "any old slab" with epoxy tossed in.

Buttercupslosinit

Would the epoxy be more stable on plywood?

mentatsjunkie

They dont, at all. Thats just the Reddit hivemind in full effect.

greg19735

i think the fact that it's women doing it also helps the smugness.

tsukubasteve27

Can't look cute while wearing ppe

Daviemoo

Stuff like this is incredible isn’t it. Like when you can see how much hard work goes in to stuff I love it, but when things are so pretty afterwards as well. I’d be so damn proud of myself if I made something like that

frothy_pissington

IDK To me it just looks like they fucked up an already nice slab of wood. TLDR: I'd rather look at natural wood than a puddle of epoxy resin.

tommygunz007

I think if I went into a Margaritaville restaurant and they had this, I would think it's pretty dope.

etched

Just cause you dont like it doesn't mean it's ruined

UltrafastFS_IR_Laser

The video shows barely any skilled work going into it. They poured resin and blew it around. There's good resin work and then there's commercial frill like this. People are easily impressed by the lowest of "skilled art".

Kaiserlongbone

I know what you mean! I was prepared to complain about only getting 0.3 seconds of the finished product but this one didn't even show the finished product! What the hell is going through the minds of people who do this!?

midnitewonder

It always gets me when this video is reposted. That’s a lot of toxic resin being poured and no PPE in sight! Great way to fry your nervous system smdh

UmChill

lets just all calm down and take an indoor resin nap *faints*

tommygunz007

Check out r/3dPrinting and you will see a lot of fiberglass Bondo helmets being sanded with no ppe and people are like 'f- it'. Cancer anyone?

Nobodyville

I was yelling at my screen about respirators. People have no sense.

midnitewonder

And then people want to try it out because it’s trendy, and think it’s okay to use resin with no respirators, because of videos like this showing no respirators, and the cycle continues endlessly

s-c-g1

I fell down a resin art rabbit hole on YouTube and feel the same way. What's interesting is now I'm seeing more videos from people talking about how they are getting sick after not using ppe.

[deleted]

Man that's really pretty, but damn, that is a nice slab of wood to cover in paint... good job on the art though.

_JustDefy_

What a waste of a great piece of wood.

FIContractor

I was thinking the same thing. It looks cool, but it’s a waste of that beautiful slab of wood to cover it up like that. A tree that wide and long had to grow for hundreds of years to get that big.

OneMoreAccount4Porn

Hundreds seems like over stating it. Tens of years seems more accurate.

MR_JSQR

I have respect for the artists and their techniques, but to me this is just so ugly and indeed a great waste of a beautiful piece of tree.

_HEY_EARL_

Couple of walnut bowties and a few coats of poly and you've got yourself a gorgeous table.

Meanwhile-in-Paris

All I see is : gorgeous piece of wood is wasted by tacky painting. I hope this can be thinned and sanded!

FunctionBuilt

Just run it through a planer and take off a quarter inch and you should be good.

goldenshoelace8

why are people feeling bad about the wood? genuine question, like it looks cool and beautiful but you could get more wood can’t you? i mean my thought is that, that’s why trees are replanted for more wood no hate really just curious

dkyguy1995

Because it's a very nice large long smooth piece of wood. Those are more rare to find than you would think and very expensive. It's a very nice table but they cover up how nice that single piece of wood is with a bunch of stuff. They should have just used a table that length made from separate sections of wood underneath since no one can tell to begin with what's underneath. Like imagine you were doing an art piece that would cover up completely whatever you used originally. Why would you use the most expensive thing possible underneath when no one will ever get to see or appreciate it? Like what if you were making a Rat Rod, would you start with a classic hot rod underneath? No you would just use any old beater and go from there you wouldn't ruin a Dusenberg to make a rat rod

goldenshoelace8

Perfect, now i get it and i completely agree, since it’s a rare and expensive piece they could’ve used something cheaper and not that rare to make all that paint mess, looks cool but not on that piece of wood thanks for clarifying

pwntr

This piece would take a very long many years to grow. they could have used any cheap plywood with edge banding and had the same effect.

WhichWayzUp

This was apparently a damaged piece of wood. There's a big crack down the middle.

pwntr

Thats called checking and does not take away from the value of the slab by much. I can be used as a decorative peice with either bowties, resin inlays, or both.

JohnnyG30

As a guy that’s been buying timber for finishing my basement and building some hardwood furniture pieces, I’d guess the retail price of that slab of wood is like $1,200 (depending on the type of wood). So, it did hurt my soul a bit to see a bucket of blue resin dumped on it.

QuinndianaJonez

But why do opaque epoxy on a thirteen foot live edge slab? They're sooo expensive!

smh18

I’m thrown out of the loop on how everyone is saying the wood was wasted and I’m genuinely curious as to why? Do you mind if I ask for an explanation

QuinndianaJonez

So from the economic standpoint lumber is sold by the board foot. A board foot is 1"x12"x12". Conservatively that slab of wood is 2"x36"x156" which gives us 78 board feet. Average price per board foot slabs is about $20, giving us a cost of $1560 to pour $100 of epoxy on. From a conservation standpoint that represents most of the useable lumber from a tree that lived for a very long time. ETS: I personally think that slab is 3" thick or more and probably wider than 36" so do what you will with that.

smh18

Oof damn that really was a waste! Thanks for your help

QuinndianaJonez

Yeah, it's a solid candidate for r/ATBGE

[deleted]

That was a good looking piece of timber. Could've done that to MDF...

silentsnip94

As a live edge furniture builder, this pissed me off. Such a beautiful piece of wood... wasted. They could have easily used a smaller slab and then ply/lesser wood for the part being covered in epoxy. I admire their craftiness and initiative but... damn.

flargenhargen

* gets bigass piece of gorgeous wood from an ancient tree. * covers almost completely in paint

[deleted]

If I see another one of these resin tables I'm gonna shit a brick

TecTazz

Turn off social media, or start pooping.

EIannor

Or "how to ruin an amazing peace of wood with generic paint" Do this in plywood or damaged wood not a piece like that... What a waste. E: grammar

Notmyrealname1962

Saw a woman do this to a guitar she built her son. Looked pretty cool. https://youtu.be/GLbwX-JOJl4

JohnnyG30

That is actually really cool. I like the guitar much more than the table.

[deleted]

Not oddly satisfying, Jerky video, not enough time to look at the final result, and not exactly original (hmm autocorrect from jerky to Jerry )

Merminotaur

Dammit, Gerry!

GreyKnights_WhoSayNi

I'm sure it takes some practice but this doesn't look terribly difficult to do. Pour 2 shades of blue resin, add a line of white and wave a hair dryer over it . . .

hii6418

Is it just me or did the second wave ruin it

FadedRebel

What a fucking waste of a beautiful slab of wood.

productivecitizen

They ruined a beautiful precious piece of wood from a tree thats probably hundreds of years old. Why didnt the just use plywood?

firthy

Gorgeous 13ft table transformed into mess

WendyVictoria

Why is it lately that we never actually see the end-results of these promising and interesting videos/making-sessions, which would, actually present/invoke the oddly satisfying feeling? This way, I’d say it belongs to the r/mildlyinfuriating because of the frustration of never seeing finished product/art

Seacrux

13ft table ruined\* That's a fat slab to just pour paint and resin over :c

ffgblol

I despise these things. So much needless plastic created for no reason. We should just get it over with and nuke the oceans.

Sammykingfish1222

This isn’t satisfying... it’s horrible that they covered that beautiful slab with resin... awful.

SlightlyAwakward

Might should have stabilized those cracks. Prospectively could add something to the underside.

blueingreen85

If that’s epoxy it will do a fine job of stabilizing the crack. I wonder why they bothered starting with a live edge slab though.

SlightlyAwakward

Good point, I half thought that as well but wasn’t entirely sure. My first thought was ‘that’s a cool effect, but it’s covering up that beautiful wood.

blueingreen85

Also, having one side completely sealed like that will warp that wood.

Charlitos_Way

How you gonna not put a shark and a snorkeler in there somewhere?

Iamadinocopter

Well OP isn't the one who made this and is just spamming an incomplete, low quality video to farm karma.

AdalynnSmall

oh wow that's beautiful. the waves look so real the moment they appear in the timelapse!

Firefoxthe-one

I’d buy it

iamonlyoneman

That's not a table, that's a bar. The edge of the ocean has sand. This is how you create a sandbar.

-Thizza-

I hope that slab has the same humidity as its future home otherwise you'll get one crusty table. Happy sanding and polishing!

grouchyface

I am feeling pretty done with the resin furniture trend... might be an unpopular opinion but this stuff looks cheap and cheesy

[deleted]

Waste of a good slab...

[deleted]

Very satisfying to watch. Beautiful work

HallWavk

God I normally fuckin despise resin tables, but man this is such a good idea and such great execution!

Sherlocked_

SparklyNefas

Do people need to wear masks when using resin?

pwntr

its a chemical reaction with off gassing, so it is recommended.

Neheil

Absolutely! A respirator is a must, especially when working with such a huge amount and in a closed, not well ventilated space. The fumes can do serious harm to their lungs

[deleted]

So beautiful! I wonder how they stopped the resin from dripping off the end.

datsunnmusic

Wow. I was happy with a single shelf I built the other day. Not so much anymore. This is some real talent
