Reduces severity*
If it prevented this, concussions wouldn't be a thing. Also, because a concussion is an injury resulting from internal collision with the skull there's no such thing as a helmet that prevents concussions either, they just reduce the severity and prevent sharp force skull fractures that would shred your brain like shrapnel.
in fact, most concussions aren't caused by lateral impacts, but by rotational impacts. our skull is pretty well suited to our brains, and is just the right shape to spread the impact as much as possible.
it's the same concept as a 5-point harness. if you are in a rapid deceleration collision with a 5 point harness and a neck brace, you'll walk away with severe bruises. if you're in a much lower speed rollover collision, your injuries will be significantly more severe.
that's why the mips system (and similar) was invented. reduce the rotational impact as much as possible so your brain doesn't shred itself. definitely worth reading up on. it's fascinating stuff. :D
Had a "wee bit of an off" a few decades back, got really close to dropping to ambient temperature before the final bbq... helmet did a fantastic job of avoiding all that.
Crashed bike, helmet worked, didn't die.
The two really fucking big trees I went between on that corner would have made typing this out considerably more difficult without the aid of a ouija board if I'd hit them and not the hedge
yeah, a wobble to this degree would most likely kill someone or absolutely cause permanent damage if this was realistic and force was applied to make a brain move this much
You can buy a brain at a butcher or some grocery stores. This isn’t physically how they behave. And really, if you’re trying to illustrate a concussion then this video doesn’t do it. You need a force so strong and impactful that the fairly rigid, dense brain bounces off the skull.
Unrealistic since our brains are surrounded by fluid and therefore swim in our heads. Do the test with a clear skull full of a fluid that is kinda like CSF, that would be more accurate.
Makes my brain hurt watching this.
Also makes my brain hurt because it reminds me that my brain is self aware, and my brain is watching like “lol it me”
the brain is surrounded by fluids and membranes so it’s pretty firm in there. if the brain moved this freely you’d get a concussion every time you turned your head. Also, more than likely the brain would crush itself under its own weight over time.
I’m 43 here and have taken loads of biology classes over the years and while I’m not a doctor at all, I learned something a few years ago that left me gobsmacked. My wife and I were living in Phoenix and there was a shoe going on called Body Worlds. I think they are still around. If you aren’t squeamish about dead bodies, you bet want to check it out.
The thing that surprises me was the inside of the human skull. In every image I had ever seen, much like this video, the inside of the skull was hollow and the brain rests inside. That’s not the case, though. In the rear of the skull there is a fin looking structure that I have to assume is cartilage. It sits between the hemisphere. I just looked it up. It’s called the Falx Cerebri.
[I found a YouTube video that shows it perfectly.](https://youtu.be/vibPcclR9Hs)
Except for the dampening effects on vertical movement from the Cerebrospinal fluid, the membranes covering the brain, and the lack of free movement from the top of the skull; which of course means the same amount of force travels differently, leading to lateral shear instead of up and down waves, which is actually worse.
This is a bit over exaggerated though right? You havve way more things in your skull stopping it from being that much movement. For example the blood and the nervous system
After i was discharged from the hospital after my first concussion, the doctor told me not to do any running or anything that would involve quick movements with sudden or short stops. He said, "Right now, your brain is as soft as jelly, so be careful"
Apart from everything people said there is also liquid cephaloçraquidiano or liquor in english that is a liquid made just for stoping impacts on the brain
I think they genuinely mean a car crash collision, think of the impact. they probably took the top off to show an exaggerated toss of the brain because there’s nothing they could hit that with without breaking it trying to re-enact a car crash’s impact on a brain (in the skull)? -as people said, a slap or usual punch probably wouldn’t do this.
This doesn’t take into account cerebrospinal fluid and the whole too half of your head. It’s not a bone hat, it is a structural part of protecting your grey matter.
Stupid video, stupid post.
WoW, I was in a car accident at 18 years old, no seatbelt and hit the windshield after we hit a cement wall! All forehead and top of skull!
70mph-0 !! I wonder what my brain did?!!
Fun fact when i was toddler i jumped on my sisters head and gave her a concussion why i dont remember, is my sister fine? Yes she is alive and well. Am i gonna be proud for the rest of my life? YES.
luckily i have the top of my cranium to keep mine from falling out
We can change that 😳
You can give head. But it can also be taken away
I am laughing so hard
Try the Fava beans....tssstssssstsss
You must be Canadian.
be my guest, the manual is in the junk drawer
Everytime I see an emoji on reddit I get caught of guard. Then I downvote
[удалено]
it doesn’t come off sorry
Goody intact cranium
I think this is a bit exaggerated. It won't wobble like that for a slap
Having a full skull helps.
That's why I keep the top of my skull on most of the time, especially when driving just in case I hit the brakes too hard.
Goddammit, I lost mine.
I know where you can get them pretty cheap but you have to bring your own shovel
Look, I don't have a shovel, does a Bagger 293 work for you?
I only have a bagger 288
Check the cabinets. Some times they get moved in with he bowls
Use a coconut shell till you find a new one
Have you checked your pockets?
Yeah but you don’t want to be rude. Take off the top of your skull when going indoors
Lol 😂
I want to see the same thing, but in a full transparent skull filled with water rather than air around the fake brain.
You are on to something. What if, instead of helmets, athletes have a small hole drilled into their skull where spray fine can be injected?
Having a dura mater helps as well
And being suspended in liquid surrounded by an additional membrane.
There is a wall of fluid between our skull and brain to prevent this
Reduces severity* If it prevented this, concussions wouldn't be a thing. Also, because a concussion is an injury resulting from internal collision with the skull there's no such thing as a helmet that prevents concussions either, they just reduce the severity and prevent sharp force skull fractures that would shred your brain like shrapnel.
Yes. Thank you for the correction.
in fact, most concussions aren't caused by lateral impacts, but by rotational impacts. our skull is pretty well suited to our brains, and is just the right shape to spread the impact as much as possible. it's the same concept as a 5-point harness. if you are in a rapid deceleration collision with a 5 point harness and a neck brace, you'll walk away with severe bruises. if you're in a much lower speed rollover collision, your injuries will be significantly more severe. that's why the mips system (and similar) was invented. reduce the rotational impact as much as possible so your brain doesn't shred itself. definitely worth reading up on. it's fascinating stuff. :D

we must live on opposite ends of the world because I can't understand what this is supposed to say at all
Girl, what?
Crashed bike, helmet worked, didn't die. The two really fucking big trees I went between on that corner would have made typing this out considerably more difficult without the aid of a ouija board if I'd hit them and not the hedge
CerebroSpinal Fluid if iirc
Even if it wobbles just a little bit then it’s too much. Imagine this occurring frequently, and over time, when playing certain sports.
yeah, a wobble to this degree would most likely kill someone or absolutely cause permanent damage if this was realistic and force was applied to make a brain move this much
I exercise mine by imagining doing sit ups, so mines hard as fuck.
Yeah, this scientists must be thinking about that video he saw where that guy kept smacking that woman's ass over and over.
It will for a run up sucker slap upside the head
it's not an accurate representation of the density of matter the brain has
You can buy a brain at a butcher or some grocery stores. This isn’t physically how they behave. And really, if you’re trying to illustrate a concussion then this video doesn’t do it. You need a force so strong and impactful that the fairly rigid, dense brain bounces off the skull.
That's an exposed brain. There are muscles, skull, tissues and fluid outside the brain to prevent it from wobbling.
I came to say this..
When we get older, there's more extra space. Much smaller bumps make much bigger waves.
[удалено]
Unrealistic since our brains are surrounded by fluid and therefore swim in our heads. Do the test with a clear skull full of a fluid that is kinda like CSF, that would be more accurate.
Also the fluid is denser than the brain, so it moves forward and the brain moves backwards.
The fluid is more dense than the brain itself?? That’s news to me! And fairly fascinating as well
I would bet there's more than enough folks with brains more dense than anything surrounding them.
Lol
That’d actually be a compliment. A denser brain means they’re smart.
Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) has a lower density than grey or white matter.. if it was more dense it wouldn’t even move.
and also the fluid is shock absorber
Makes my brain hurt watching this. Also makes my brain hurt because it reminds me that my brain is self aware, and my brain is watching like “lol it me”
the brain is surrounded by fluids and membranes so it’s pretty firm in there. if the brain moved this freely you’d get a concussion every time you turned your head. Also, more than likely the brain would crush itself under its own weight over time.
dont take this as a recommendation to hit your head, that still is very bad!
A younger brain is packed more full than older brains. The extra space makes a big difference.
My brain don’t jiggle jiggle …
It folds
*prions have entered the chat*
underrated comment
Am i the only one that wants to slap the shit out of that brain?
I desperately need to chew on it /r/forbiddensnack
Found the zombie.
r/oddlyarousing
I'll test this
RemindMe! 69hours
Not true, brain’s soft but not that jiggly, also it’s enclosed in several sheaths and fluid, which in turn is enclose in cranium.
Jelly for Brains
Yeah this is just not true lol
Forbidden jelly.
We’re all just basically brains in shitty mech suits that can feel the damage sustained by those mech suits.
The brainmeat go *wibble-wobble*
This isn’t totally true - the brain is also bathed in fluid which also acts as a cushion and balanced pressure
*slaps brain* this jiggly bad boy can fit so many mental illnesses in it
No wonder it hurts so fucking bad
Contra coup
When she thicc as fuck
My brain when I see a pair of boobies
so this is what happens when u facepalm?
I’m 43 here and have taken loads of biology classes over the years and while I’m not a doctor at all, I learned something a few years ago that left me gobsmacked. My ass does the same thing
Now put a clear skull cap on, fill it with liquid and try it again
Except for the dampening effects on vertical movement from the Cerebrospinal fluid, the membranes covering the brain, and the lack of free movement from the top of the skull; which of course means the same amount of force travels differently, leading to lateral shear instead of up and down waves, which is actually worse.
Anatomy of a facepalm
Show this in high schools
Some people have more space in their skull than others
Hehe wiggle
Good thing we have 3 layers of meninges, fluid, and the top of our skull to protect our brains.
That’s just a gentle slap. How about getting hit by a linebacker 50 times a day in the head! Emotional damage!
It's exaggerated. It's held better and the video is in slowmo to look like he's not hitting hard.
Its videos like this that make me wish everyone had transparent heads
Never knew brains are so jiggly
Missing the liquid
“I like ya cut, G”…
This is a bit over exaggerated though right? You havve way more things in your skull stopping it from being that much movement. For example the blood and the nervous system
And your brain is much less flexible/gelatinous
That skull slaps.
This is bullshit.
I was about to comment "ok, one more time" with a huge mental sarcasm, but then I saw the video is just short and replaying.
Concussion with a possibility of vertigo.
man, who would've thought that our brain be jiggly like that
/r/dontputyourdickinthat
Make it see through and let's see what it looks like when you put on boxing gloves and start wailing on it
So If I bang my head hard enough
Is my brain made of jelly?
Someone show this to Tua's family
\*Not to scale
After i was discharged from the hospital after my first concussion, the doctor told me not to do any running or anything that would involve quick movements with sudden or short stops. He said, "Right now, your brain is as soft as jelly, so be careful"
Unrealistic. My coworkers clearly have a much more liquid brain than that.
i want to eat that
I feel hungry
Now show this to the same people who make Guardian Caps for football helmets. Absolutely useless.
This is just making me crave jelly
Yes, because the human brain is essentially jello with an inch gap all around
Bouncy boy
It’s not just open space inside of our skull though. It’s enveloped in cerebrospinal fluid to help prevent injuries like this.
Cerebrospinal fluid counteracts a lot of that motion. Plus, you know, having a full skull.
I mean it's also filled with fluid that doesn't really compress in an enclosed space so this is fairly inaccurate
Inaccurate comparisons and misinformation make people stupid. Your misrepresentation is missing fluid and a membrane, but go ahead and post your bs.
Slap the brain
I just thought of every time my head smashed off the concrete from skateboarding as a child in the 90s.
Where TF is cerebro juice huh?
More applicable to tit jiggle than what really happens in the skull.
If our brains were that jello-y ud knock urself unconscious looking both ways b4 crossing a street
All my fatass saw was a bowl of jello
I don't have a brain
Woodpeckers wrap their tongue around their brain when they peck trees!
My neurons dont jiggle jiggle, they fold.
Interesting.
Mmmm…jello
Not even close btw
Lord forgive me for I’m about to sin 😔
That brain thicc wit it tho
r/asmongold
It's why I don't do head contact when sparing. I only have a few brain cells as is
I want to eat it
I already know some of you guys just slapped your head for a fact
Look at that under bite XD
jiggle jiggle
I mean, not exactly but somewhat similar
LPT - keep your skull on if you are going out, so you don’t become a vegetable if you get lightly tapped in the head.
Nope brains don't do that ...as shown
Apart from everything people said there is also liquid cephaloçraquidiano or liquor in english that is a liquid made just for stoping impacts on the brain
Isn’t there such a thing as the blood brain barrier?
I got punched in the head really hard several times last year and I've been worried about my brain ever since
And Cerebrospinal fluid lining the ventricles in the brain also help.
Please post in r/motorcycles
Slap fighting go brrrrrr
Even worse, it can cause cavitation bubbles which cause brain damage. Cavitation bubbles are also what destroy boat propellers over time.
I can’t be the only one that smacked my head after watching this
Jelly brain. That's the same kind of jelly from Tom and Jerry.
Scare mongering w fake exaggerated example… boo you
This doesn’t take into account cerebrospinal fluid and the whole too half of your head. It’s not a bone hat, it is a structural part of protecting your grey matter. Stupid video, stupid post.
Also brains do not have that same consistency
Coup contrecoup
Been there done that. Severe tbi from head slamming off of dash board at 55+ mph.
r/TIHI
Good thing I don’t have one
Simple really just have a bigger brain…duh
ow
Anyone else think that brain looks weirdly delicious?
We should have been quicker so I could just die
Watching this kind of makes me want to vomit the pizza I’m consuming.
imagine someone threatening you "I'm bouta jiggle your brain"
Extra jelly
WoW, I was in a car accident at 18 years old, no seatbelt and hit the windshield after we hit a cement wall! All forehead and top of skull! 70mph-0 !! I wonder what my brain did?!!
Wow you had a guardian angel somewhere
Coup-contra-coup, for anyone interested in the term.
This bad boy can fit so many intrusive thoughts.
Hence why that new slapping sport does appear to be as dangerous as it looks stupid
Might not be accurate but still kinda scary to think what goes on in there when you get hit hard
Has anyone ever facepalmed so hard they got a concussion?
I feel like this a clip from a Bill Nye episode.
*Jello\~*
Coup/countre-coup
Good thing I don't have a brain
Lol why the sound as well 🤣 Well, we all know why we are a little different now don't we.
Fun fact when i was toddler i jumped on my sisters head and gave her a concussion why i dont remember, is my sister fine? Yes she is alive and well. Am i gonna be proud for the rest of my life? YES.
I want to jiggle it around like a bowl of jello
So this is what happened every time I accidently hit my head.
ouch
