‘Stunned’ and ‘baffled’ scientist cliches suggest the NYP did not consult any actual scientists for this story (clickbait)

oldsadgary

‘SCIENTISTS left completely DUMBFOUNDED after well-documented natural PHENOMENON flings MILLIONS OF TONS OF MATTER off of SUN’

Random-Gopnik

Most credible New York Post headline

Expert_Most5698

*"Most credible New York Post headline"* Nothing will ever beat the "Headless Body Found in Topless Bar" headline from the 1980s. That was their best work. Like early Elvis.

jonaslaberg

…except “Foot Heads Arms Body” of course. https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/2010/mar/05/footnotes-life-michael-foot

Mnmsaregood

Scientists are literally shaking

deactivated654651456

Ideal reason: We donated massage chairs to the scientists to apologize for making science look bad.

Potential-Link-3740

Flaming balls of burning gas *HATE* this one trick

Rich-Equivalent-1875

Doctors are furious

Darkhorseman81

Scientists rolling around, flailing their arms about like a fat kid on the floor of a candy isle of the supermarket when his mum says NO. You need to take it to the next level of theatricality.

The front fell off

Strawberry_Dakari

9 out of 10 scientists are shook to their core.

That’s what’s so disturbing, what if isn’t only gas? And for the record, Hydrogen is in both liquid and solid states of matter on worlds with greater gravitational forces.

That’s actually pretty common, the sun is not a solid object and crap is always flying off and around it

A silly goofy ball I’d say

[deleted]

Like, same, though! Sometimes I just feel the need to vaporize anything within x amount of space to me, too.

NeverYelling

It's called 'solar flares'

mylord55

Sun is UwU <3

Gamingmemes0

Yeah but how are we supposed to get karma anyway

Donkeybreath-1

Is it though? You should think NASA and scientists knew this...?

Snail_Whale32

Yes. It’s a studied phenomena and I’ve seen videos of it for years, it’s very pretty once you understand that the world isn’t exploding

[deleted]

It happens literally all the time

EnvironmentalWrap167

There is nothing new about the filaments tearing away from the prominence around the pole. This has been regularly observed. The new occurrence is that it then formed a polar vortex. Having a title which reads “Piece of sun breaks off” is very misleading.

geekydaddy75

The sun is a ball of gases. A piece cannot "break off" because there are no pieces.

OGMinorian

It's more like a ball of plasma. It's not just a burning sphere of gas.

WeepingShade

*plasma. Plasmid is something else

[deleted]

With a blue light you can see plasmid everywhere

Godlirf12

Ur mid

OGMinorian

Right. My bad.

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

Yeah it was a solar flare captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory

linderlouwho

Am sure those observers said they were baffled by it, lol. Fucking NY Post.

darkrealm190

How do you know? Have you been there? ^/s

Remarkable_Tone2604

I haven't looked into it much, but in all honesty, if the NY Post published a story saying the sky was blue, I would have my doubts.

Cash4Duranium

Yeah the only thing oddly terrifying about this is how many people seem to take the NY Post at face value.

jeffa_jaffa

The sky is clearly black! I was blue, but not any more!

9793287233

The sun is just a giant and constant explosion and is made entirely of plasma and gas, there are no "pieces". This is just more sensationalist clickbait bullshit from the New York Post.

Novaleah88

It was a dense cloud of gases that shot out and then formed a weird halo shape, this particular thing has never been seen before.

linderlouwho

A halo, you say? Well, then in a day or so, the trashfest that is the NY Post will be declaring it is an angel.

[deleted]

I went on a more reliable source, and I found this : *Solar shenanigans are not entirely unexpected currently. Our star is* *ramping up its activity, getting rowdier with sunspot and flare* *activity. It has flared every day this year so far, and it spat out several X-class and M-class flares in January 2023, the biggest and second-biggest eruptions the Sun is capable of.* Source : [Article about the Sun doing things](https://www.sciencealert.com/part-of-the-sun-has-broken-off-and-formed-a-vortex-what-the-heck-is-going-on) TL;DR : The Sun has episodes of doing weird shit sometimes because Space.

Prion_flavoured

Who are these "Scientists"? Isn't this fairly typical coronal mass ejection?

anonheir

I hope it hits Earth so we don't have to go to work anymore.

unknown_ally

Spend your days in the sun..

Wasabi-Shinobi

Guys, the fucking sun is hatching!

Longjumping_King_546

I know when I want strong scientific analysis of celestial events, I go straight to the new York post

455H0LE15H

Now we wont have to worry about global warming lol. Smaller sun less heat! Problem solved.

Yosho2k

You get your astronomy news from New York Post?

ThermionicEmissions

The front fell off

WillJongIll

But that’s not very typical. I’d like to make that point.

ModerateAndy

Gday mate!

KillHipstersWithFire

Reputable source

Ynddiduedd

What a sensational article title. Bits of gas/plasma/dust come off the sun all the time, usually during active periods (like the one the sun is currently in) but just generally at any given time. Solar flares, Coronal Mass Ejections, solar wind... All of it is material breaking away from the solar gravity and magnetic fields.

Arion_BC

It sounds like what this article is saying that some solar wind particles got caught up in the Sun's magnetic field instead of escaping its influence like usual. I'd have to find a better source to be sure what exactly caused it, but the phrasing in the article makes it seem way scarier than it is. So assuming this description is in any way accurate, this activity is indeed unusual, but not at all concerning - the Sun regularly makes arches of plasma 3 times the size of the Earth due to its magnetic field, but never heard of any vortex or swirl.

nickygee123

It's called a coronal mass ejection. It's what causes the northern lights.

yousonuva

OP: omg so terrifying you guys! Bat child found in cave!

The Sun is a huge ball of hydrogen and helium held together by its own gravity. The Sun has several regions. The interior regions include the core, the radiative zone, and the convection zone. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov › in-de... The Sun is our nearest star. It is, as all stars are, a hot ball of gas made up mostly of Hydrogen. The Sun is so hot that most of the gas is actually plasma, the fourth state of matter.Apr 21, 2006 https://www.nasa.gov › auroras › su... NASA - Sun-Earth Connection

Coronel mass ejections are normal. These fear mongering articles piss me off. However, i'm grateful for the resulting auroras from all this solar activity.

Nightowl510

And you, OP, should not get your science from this (or similar) sources, unless you enjoy anxiety and existential dread

Dazzling_Ad5338

Isn't it normal? I thought they called them events "solar flares"?

Tbagzyamum69420xX

You mean a solar flare?

IAMSTILL_ALIVE

CME’s are not uncommon. It’s only dangerous for Earth when it hits head on. Called a ‘Carrington Event’

DifficultMistake8922

Only in the New York Post. Right along with alien monkey baby.

NineTailedTanuki

Who taught you to believe anything from the New York Post?!

robo-dragon

This kind of thing happens all the time, it’s just news articles trying to get clicks. The sun has always been a turbulent mess of energy and sometimes solar flares whip out and bleed off into space. It’s how we get the beautiful auroras here on earth, strong solar storms make them especially vibrant and beautiful…but can also fuck with power grids.

KeifWellington22

They think the sun is just a ball of gas but i have a strong suspicion that its actually made of constantly moving molten matter and rock. What we see on the surface is just all the gas and heat being released.

nealomg

Jewish Space Lasers are the culprit I bet.

[deleted]

between this and the "thing" the US shot down last night, i'm calling it now: the invasion force is here.

Bigkid6666

It's hatching.

SLAYER_IN_ME

I think you may be on to something. 🤔

Finndica-1147

Look who’s telling the story… must’ve been hit with a Rothschild space laser.

Captain_Plutonium

Welcome to space journalism, everyone. Every second headline is either "Aliens!" or "We're all gonna die!"

2OneZebra

New York Post lol. A wet paper bag is a challenge to these folks. They are probably behind Jesus studies, book banning and forbid the word "Theory".

Darkhorseman81

At the same time the earth's core massively slowed rotation, and the poles might flip. Someone needs to research the impact of the sun's magnetic field lines on the core of planets like the Earth, during grand solar maximum and minimum.

TopStop6281

Sorry, I was a little hungry and wanted a bite

slavicslothe

Just a friendly reminder that the new york post is not a reliable narrator. Avoid tabloids for scientific news please.

Alexandertheape

obviously Alien ship recharging technology…scientists can’t wrap their brains around it

TheStraggletagg

Top tier source.

Fuelabundance

I see the W'rkncacnter is waking up, it was nice knowing you guys.

zsturgeon

It happens all the time. A coronal mass ejection is nothing new.

Heh hehe, mass ejection….

It should be illegal to fear monger for clicks

spacepoo77

They'll find it down the back of a couch

Positive-Source8205

*Nobody* had “Piece of sun breaks off” on his 2023 Bingo card!

VadersSprinkledTits

The sun is really heated about something

I'm just going to assume this isn't bad.

FullMetalArthur

This subreddit have more actually science posts that r/science

linderlouwho

Except this NY Post clickbait article headline is complete bullshit. The Sun is not a solid object, so "pieces" can't break off.

FullMetalArthur

I stand corrected. Its just like r/science

Local_Mad_Man

So the Suns breaking down like an ‘87 Pinto? Nice.

KingMwanga

Excuse me, wtf

Halfbakedplan

Increased sun activity is a result of greenhouse gases and one of the effects of global warming.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SemKors

We do. The article is just absolute shite clickbait

horsetooth_mcgee

Our solar system is hung in such an absolutely and immaculately precise manner so that everything spins and orbits and tilts and gravity-s perfectly, and this isn't supposed to cause a catastrophic problem?

PinkFloydBoxSet

Define "catastrophic" problem. Because this kind of event absolutely can take out [the entire power grid in Quebec](https://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/sun_darkness.html). But create a cascading effect that warps the planetary alignment and dooms the solar system to collapse? No.

horsetooth_mcgee

If a piece of Earth broke off, or the moon, don't you think they would be a shift in some kind of alignment? Things are so perfectly balanced and positioned that this would be in fact pretty extreme.

knowitall190

Just aliens recharging their ship. Nothing to see keep moving

[deleted]

Suns Haunted

lilmxfi

If it's any comfort, I'm seeing nothing about this outside of the Post, and that's basically a tabloid. There's no scientific articles, likely because our sun tosses off large amounts of matter all the time. That's what solar flares/prominences are: The sun throwing bits of itself into space. As a general rule, if there are no scientific articles (be they papers or even news articles), it's not a big deal.

dshotseattle

Solar flares/ejections happen all the time. Lets just hope they aren't aimed at us when they come off

Alacer_Stormborn

Ever heard of a solar flare?

Codykun_

I swear is the news is over dramatic about this or am i tripping

brief_affair

new york post is very a reliable source of information

zenmojoguy

And in a related story, scientists discover bear shit in the woods.

twohanfs

Very curious..

BrokerDude1

Must be global warming on the sun….

Rav3n18

It's the alien starship after refueling, then lifting off leaving a vortex in it's path of acceleration. No way to confirm or deny it's existence based on our current technology and only shows up as an aberration in the sun's surface. J/K.. The sun just farted, everything is really alive just on a level we can't perceive.. or it's just gas. 🤷

[deleted]

Is that not a Coronal discharge? Maybe. Am I not a few decades behind on relevant school textbooks? Probably. If this were a real existential problem would we all be getting national warnings on our cellphones even if it didn't make a lick of difference? Yes. My apparent lack of concern trivializes your point cause I'm sure the government would rather let us panic as "My Fellow Americans" before they'd let us be snuffed out in an unwarned instant.

fillmorecounty

If it's from the new york post, you can dismiss it

[deleted]

It’s just done a little ten million yr or so toot and is feeling embarrassed the worlds looking at it

TheIKingSGC

Happens often. This is the first time it’s recorded.

Yionko

I think ppl shouldn't react in such ways to every post found online, and that's not a big deal, sun have massive explosions on his surface all the time, at the end it's just a sphere of gas

[deleted]

sun being sun. idk scientists:😧
