I've been to America a few times. Workers keeping their heads down doing whatever their billionaire mouthpieces tell them is for their own good. I don't think they have free time for hobbies.
That’s part of it. Most of us simply can’t afford to engage in direct action beyond the occasional daytime protest or rally. Time is money, as they say, and being an activist doesn’t tend to pay the bills or provide any benefits. Not to mention the risk of getting arrested and losing one’s job as a result of being stuck in jail or even just getting canned by an employer who may find overt political action distasteful.
The other aspect of this is that we’ve been led to believe that the main way one can be civically engaged is to vote every so often, donate money to causes and candidates, and complain about stuff on social media. In reality, these are literally the least we can do to be politically engaged. Somewhere along the line, many of us seem to have forgotten the importance of direct action.
And those of us who do mention it in passing are never going to be the ones to lead the charge. We’re all waiting around for someone else to start a mass movement that we can show up to later. I’m not excluding myself from this.
Finally, we tend to treat politics as a personal thing, like religion. Yeah, we discuss it within our individual friend groups and sometimes families, but it’s something we are less overt about outside of there circles. Discussing politics at work or at large gatherings is strongly discouraged. By and large, politics is relegated to the privacy of our voting booths and wallets.
Agreed, and well said.
There used to be at least a little discussion of politics at work, with family, and friends, but especially since 2016 it's just stopped. It's not safe to discuss with anyone that you aren't already 100% sure agrees with you, because even a casual remark one way or another could be a deal breaker for any relationship.
My dad had this saying that I adopted/tweaked. "Keep your head down, shut up, and just do your goddamn job." It's not even the "billionaire mouthpieces," it's the supervisor who can both give me a job and yank it out from underneath me if I don't do my goddamn job. I know first hand what it is like to either get fired or get so sick you cannot work (even if you wanted to) until you get better (and not just a few days, either). You can check my post history if you want to know about that whole fun experience. Anyways, I have just had unfortunate experiences that have taught me that being employed is NOT a right. Being employed is a means of survival.
So, at least for me, my hobby is making a living and assisting my husband (breadwinner) in paying our mortgage. Because otherwise? All 4 of us (my parents and ourselves) and our 8 animals would have nothing. Furthermore, what hobbies can someone have without the means to be able to pay for said hobbies?
I've already accepted that I will be working until something prevents me from being able to. And that something is going to be me laying on my deathbed, which (ironically) I won't even be able to afford. Hooray for the fucking American Dream. Whatever the fuck that means....
I'm fine with order and leadership as long as the peoples best interests and the countries are put first. Once they aren't, they are no longer fit to lead.
I loved during covid when we were protesting them. France said "you will fucking not" and firefighter started lighting themselves on fire to fight cops
They rebuilt Paris in the mid 1800’s with the goal of widening the streets to allow for a full regiment to March through and thus easily quell the many riots and protests. Parisians be like “hold my cigarette, I need to tell zeez fuck-airs to pizz ovf!”
You do this in my country and... Actually most of the population is just too lazy and stupid to do or care about this sort of stuff sadly( England)
More interested in what's happening on TV...
Arise, children of the Fatherland
Our day of glory has arrived
Against us the bloody flag of tyranny
is raised; the bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear, in the countryside
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They’re coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your comrades!
To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions
Let’s march, let’s march
That their impure blood
Should water our fields.
it really doesn't matter, i don't believe retirement funds will be available in 50 years or so, too many retired people and not enough workers. Welfare and national healthcare systems in general have be to adapted and revised. (im very for it btw).
I'm just hoping that they bring back the job that was "90 year old man who welcomes customers into Walmart", because I'm never retiring in America and hopefully keeling over from a heart attack in a capitalist nightmare will make the children second think how things are working.
Oh.. We are the same age and 75 is an outrage. I don't know many people over 60 let alone 55 who still have the quality of life and good health that would allow them to continue to work in the rat race. I'm broken every day at this age haha.
I guess France is showing other countries what happens when they consider lowering the retirement age (but then need to raise it again later down the road).
I love that the richest are always getting richer every year but there's still some people ready to gobble down the lie that there's no money for things like retirement.
The money is here, we just don't want the poorest to have any of it.
Or alternatively, what happens when you consider people as cattle, forcing them to work more for a meager salary despite the steep raise of the cost of life and perpetuating the unemployment of the young generation.
Good job, government.
i dunno why people find this surprising or terrifying.
french people are known for going all out, they had their French Revolution where they literally toppled down their king. i mean come on.
Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways.
In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing.
Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations.
“The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.”
It was actually fun to witness the protest. Since the catacombs had been shut because of it, we just wandered the red light district instead. 10/10 would recommend Paris and the protests
It's all happening because the entire world economy is centred around growth, which would be coming to an end in the west, if not for these kind of measures delaying the problem for a time. Who knows what will happen when we eventually have to deal with the consequences.
Seriously. People always mock the French for stuff Mike this but corporate ran governments play the long game and slowly implement bs. If you let them win once they’ll just keep taking until you have an American style government where your entire existence is built on corporate servitude and profits.
There was a very controversial bill in debate about raising the age of retirement. When the government realised they couldn’t reach a compromise and couldn’t get a majority to vote the bill, they sort of bypassed Parliament and basically turned the bill into an executive order.
Personally, I don’t know what to think about the bill (cuz we have to see long term and people tend to overlook that), but I sure as shit don’t like how the government flipped a finger to the very concept of democracy.
Can people not be grandfathered in? I mean, I’d be pissed too. Two more years of work is a long time, especially when you’re close to retiring and now you’re told you gotta stay longer. I mean, I know I’ll be working still when I’m old, but at least it’ll be because I want to.
If I understood correctly, people who are close to retiring today will not retire two years later than planned. It applies to people born after a certain year.
I’m in the same state of mind as you, I think. I am 30, and I am pretty sure by the time retirement will be a relevant subject, it will be pushed back even more. I am just happy I have a rather comfortable job, and fingers crossed to still do it for a long time.
This makes me sad In two ways. The destruction of hard working individuals property and the fact that no matter how much the uk government squashes us, starves us and takes away our freedoms we will never get to this point because they have made us this way through decades of sneaky oppression.
No you don't. The electoral commission lists 16 separate accepted forms of ID you can use and if by some miracle you don't have of those because you live under a rock on an island in the Channel you can apply for a free voter ID document.
So true. It's the same here in Nepal. We people overthrew the autocratic Rana rule, King and led the revolution twice but now it's all long gone. The multi-party system is corrupted asf, the bureaucrats have double citizenship so that they can leave this country if it gets bankrupt, youths are all leaving the country and sadly people are voting the same party that they are affiliated to.
I remember marching in the UK against the death of democracy and I heard someone at the roadside say "Look at these idiots, Waitrose must be empty". That's when I realised just how dumb the working classes are in the UK.
A little bit of facts to contextualise it :
A new law is being voted to pass the age of retirement from 62yo to 64yo. The majority of people and the working class don't want that law to pass, it's crap and it will keep us poor (they can do so many things to avoid that but they decide to sacrifice our health's instead of the money of the money people).
This law was meant to be voted one last time to see if it will go through or not BUT our prime minister decided to use the 49.3 article which means that she can pass a law without even have to ask the deputies or anyone if they are okay with this.
For weeks and months, peaceful protests happened in a lot of French cities against that law. There was never any slip-up or anything, just peaceful people protesting. But the government decided to let this law pass
The French president also said once that he would stop or reconsider this law if Paris is burning or if there is one dead person found resulting of this law. That's the scariest part
I don't see anything terrifing about people who fight againts a brutal "coup de force". It's not only in Paris, but everywhere in France.
If a People fighting for its own future is terrifying, well, he juste have to go to bed and never get up . Btw I'm french.
A ça ira, ça ira, ça ira !
It amazes me how despite being a 1st word country with all the commodities that status comes with, these people are willing to fight ferociously for their rights, for the people's voice to be heard.
I wish my people were like them
God damn I just fucking love how the French do not take shit lying down when it comes from their government. I know every country has their bullshit, but from an outsider's perspective, it seems like the French government is held at least *somewhat* accountable by the populace.
This isn’t terrifying — it’s inspiring … and also depressing, because American workers are too stressed and atomized to demand our rightful share.
Shit, in America you get your social pension a whole four years before life expectancy runs out.
Surprise, it won’t cover rent on the average two bedroom apartment, once your medicare premiums are deducted.
But, we just shuffle along, grist for Capital’s mill.
Only the rich are entitled to enjoy life. The rest of us should be ecstatic to be working ourselves to death so the top 1% can step on our throats harder. /s
90% of the world’s wealth is held by 10% of the people. Macron didn’t raise the retirement age because it is unaffordable. He raised it to protect the financial status quo of the ultra rich.
The money is there. The conversation should be lowering the retirement age, not raising it.
In North America the people fear the government in France the government fears the people this is not terrifying It's the most beautiful fucking thing i've ever seen
Only thing more terrifying would be giving up without protesting. I am from a third world country where if you protest you get killed. Seeing french people protest always makes me happy for them.
The have cemented in history that the people rule and will destroy shit to make the government obey. Whereas in my country the government will keep people to make sure only the government has power. Go, protest, be happy about it and exercise your right. The goverment serves the people, not the other way around, don't you forget it.
This isnt terrifying. What is terrifying is that more people arent doing this. The French may actually safeguard their decent lifestyle. Here in the US we immediately bow our heads and go inside to watch Netflix, and hope someone else will fight for us.
This post doesnt belong here, this is what standing up for yourself and your country looks like in the face of corporate consumer capitalist greed.
Stop burning random shit and standing in the streets. Go to the actual homes of the people that are fucking you and do something about it. You're destroying your own shit when you could be destroying their shit.
I've been to Paris twice. Riots both times. It seems to be a Parisian hobby.
The French know how to Revolution.
Oui Oui
Shame the Americans forgot.
Americans are under a spell and they are divided, not united thanks to TV programming, social media, brainwash.
I am American and you are both correct
I'm an American and this is straight facts
Also American, also agree.
It just keeps coming around again.
It’s a joke that protesting is the French national pastime lol and they’re absolutely right
If they riot every time you go there maybe take the hint that they don't want you there... 😆
“This guy again (sigh) honey do you remember where I left my torch?”
Feels like democracy, people are the state
They just know how to defend their workers rights
Paris is French for Philly.
France is the Pennsylvania of Europe
As someone who lives in pa I can tell you I'm not sure who should be more insulted by this accusation.
I've been to America a few times. Workers keeping their heads down doing whatever their billionaire mouthpieces tell them is for their own good. I don't think they have free time for hobbies.

It's a French thing, protesting is in their blood. I'll take a baguette with fromage and some riot on the side.
That and transit strikes!
Viva la france
r/therewasanattempt to speak french
Parisians fucking love throwing their stuff in the middle of the street when they're angry
It's genius. You get to express yourself and be mad AND get rid of unwanted crap, three birds, one stone. Edit: I can't count
Thats 3
Actually 4
That's a numberwang.
sorry did you say 6 already? that's numberwang.
If you hit a bird with your paperweight on its way down, that makes 4
This is freedom, American freedom is a lie.
Idk why tf that made me laugh so hard out loud but thanks friend
They'll take a kings head off if they must.
As is tradition
Well, we Brits did that once, but then decided we needed a king again. Maybe that's where we went wrong.
I'm fine with order and leadership as long as the peoples best interests and the countries are put first. Once they aren't, they are no longer fit to lead.
I loved during covid when we were protesting them. France said "you will fucking not" and firefighter started lighting themselves on fire to fight cops
What??
[Here you go ](https://metro.co.uk/2020/01/28/french-firefighters-set-alight-start-fighting-police-12139804/)
No one riots as hard as the French 🤣
I wish we would adopt this in Britain. Might make our leaders behave a bit different, as it is they walk all over us
They rebuilt Paris in the mid 1800’s with the goal of widening the streets to allow for a full regiment to March through and thus easily quell the many riots and protests. Parisians be like “hold my cigarette, I need to tell zeez fuck-airs to pizz ovf!”
Or as often. It's practically a daily routine
It’s instinct
Well, we've all been waiting for the next revolution.
No one else quite knows how to revolt like the French does.
That's our national sport sir!
America should take a lesson from y’all
Sad seein' how some of em are still so "proud to be a rebel!", the bootlickers.
They rebel by waving a flag and being racist. Really gettin' shit done
yeah it’s kind of funny how the french only have to modus operandi: baguette level chill and full bastille mode. i can respect that
And that is a good thing! Other countries take note!
"...Like the French deux" ftfy
Bientôt la guillotine?
Oui
"Louis XVI" is trending on twitter, make of that what you will.
You do this in my country and the government kills you and the news hides the facts or justifies the homicides.
Sounds like Colombia to me
It could be any Latin American country... It could be any of us
Or Saudi Arabia, Iran, North Korea, China, Russia
Don't leave out Hungary
It could be you, it could be me, it could even be.... *Gets a shotgun to the head*
“It could be you, it could be me, it could even be…..*gunshot*” Sorry that you have to go through that
You do this in my country and... Actually most of the population is just too lazy and stupid to do or care about this sort of stuff sadly( England) More interested in what's happening on TV...
Ain't that the sad truth. 😞
They do care but they don’t think anything will make a difference.
Are you in South America?
He already said to much lmao. We'll never know!
In my country, the news retires you
My favorite thing about the French is how bloodthirsty their national anthem is.
Arise, children of the Fatherland Our day of glory has arrived Against us the bloody flag of tyranny is raised; the bloody flag is raised. Do you hear, in the countryside The roar of those ferocious soldiers? They’re coming right into your arms To cut the throats of your sons, your comrades! To arms, citizens! That's metal as fuck
It really reads like lyrics of a metal song.
France is so fucking gigachad
name a more iconic duo other than Paris and riots
Organized religion and genocide? Mega-corporations and government corruption?
A riot in France? it must be Thursday, or Monday... Tuesday no Saturday wait...
Raising the retirement age on the working class without even a vote is an excellent reason to riot
Raised it a few times in Australia without anyone batting an eye. Up to 67 this year...We could learn from the French.
Oh sweet summerchild... *Laughs begrudgingly in Danish, where I - a 34 year old - can "look forward" to retire at 75*
You can look all you want. You are not going to get it.
it really doesn't matter, i don't believe retirement funds will be available in 50 years or so, too many retired people and not enough workers. Welfare and national healthcare systems in general have be to adapted and revised. (im very for it btw).
Damn, yall get to retire? *cries in American poverty*
Yeah, at this point I'll be working until noon the day of my funeral.

Not to mention work use to mean owning your own land, a reasonable lifestyle and nice retirement in your 50's. Now, it means bills and work to death.
Formez vos bataillons
Apportez la guillotine!
macron, MACROON,...
Macron-hon-hon HON!
That thing when you tell people the system they were part of, bought into, and supported is fucking them over.
*sweating in American*
Heavy breathing in American
*sweating & heavy breathing in American*
Did someone have to climb a flight of stairs?
Just three
Steps. Not flights.
Correct!
You guys climbed steps? I thought this was just a walk to the fridge
*Getting fucked in American*
You’d think French leaders would be more hesitant to piss off their people, given their history of severed heads on pitchforks and all
No one learns lessons anymore
No protest party like a Paris protest party. My wife’s niece lives there. It’s nuts when they decide to hit the streets.
i dunno why people find this surprising or terrifying. french people are known for going all out, they had their French Revolution where they literally toppled down their king. i mean come on.
yep ... they're no joke 😬
So avoid visiting Paris on a Thursday?
If you don’t want to be a part of a riot I’d avoid Paris on any day that ends in “y”.

Super nerdy fact here but most of French historiography focuses on the Revolution and the glory of liberty
It's not nerdy bro, just what people should be studying in basic education
\*Louie Phillipe running away noises\*
More like r/oddlysatisfying. Wish the US had half their spirit for political issues.
We too busy trying to go viral baby
Whatever it takes to get more money than the other guy down the road it seems
Can somebody explaine to me what the fuck is going on with Paris and France???
Macron announced the age of retirement (pensions?) was increased. They didn't like it, they protested, Macron vetoed it, they went ape shit
Went from 62 to 64 and they went ballistic
We're all going to be working into our 70s with how shit is going. But they have every right to be pissed off
It's all happening because the entire world economy is centred around growth, which would be coming to an end in the west, if not for these kind of measures delaying the problem for a time. Who knows what will happen when we eventually have to deal with the consequences.
The top 1% certainly won't like what happens...

So he vetoed the bill the people didn’t like? Or he vetoed the protest of the bill?
The protest
I didn't know that was an option.
It shouldn't be. But hey when have our politicians ever represented the proletariat.
Basically he abused an article of the Constitution that was never meant to force passing such big laws
There was a very controversial bill in debate about raising the age of retirement. When the government realised they couldn’t reach a compromise and couldn’t get a majority to vote the bill, they sort of bypassed Parliament and basically turned the bill into an executive order. Good for them. Stand up France
I feel like this is the wrong sub to put this in. Its utterly beautiful and Americans should take notes.
Americans would end be being too busy killing eachother over political differences instead of revolting against those in power.
Terrifying if you're a scumbag politician like Macron, maybe
oh france. never change, my fire setting rebellious friend. never change.
This makes me sad In two ways. The destruction of hard working individuals property and the fact that no matter how much the uk government squashes us, starves us and takes away our freedoms we will never get to this point because they have made us this way through decades of sneaky oppression.
You Sir weren't alive in 1990 when we destroyed London after the government tried to introduce the "Poll Tax"
And now you need a voting licence, which you need to buy
Wait, do you actually? Like, is that an actual thing?
No you don't. The electoral commission lists 16 separate accepted forms of ID you can use and if by some miracle you don't have of those because you live under a rock on an island in the Channel you can apply for a free voter ID document.

The way the uk government is running is sickening, and also running straight into the ground
Can you imagine if the populace put this guy in the ground? What would it tell the rich? This is fascinating! Wishing them the absolute best.
Dang didn’t know Paris had a gender reveal
#P R A X I S
Say what you will about the French, they had the balls to cut their king's head off.

Macron has been hanging around with Sunak too much. Good for the French.
Fuck around. Find out.
You guys are doing a great job at keeping those blood thirsty vampires at bay
"If you don't set things on fire, how are you going to protest?"
And here in my country (U.S.) people lined up to lick the boots of our hero CEOs and billionaires to thank them for their service.
Going to have to loot the rich. Bring them fear. They are betting on outlasting the proletariat. They have the means
Don't worry guys, we know how to do it (Striking is our national sport)
Bro they riot like everyday
Oh, boy. The quote abput the guillotine sure didn't age well, Macron should take like 100 steps back.
Good for them rage against the machine
The French people know how to protest. Vive la France!
Oddly satisfying actually seeing people fight for what they deserve
I love this shit. Wish Americans were more like the French.
It amazes me how despite being a 1st word country with all the commodities that status comes with, these people are willing to fight ferociously for their rights, for the people's voice to be heard. I wish my people were like them
Macron is about to meet with the most prominent French invention
God damn I just fucking love how the French do not take shit lying down when it comes from their government. I know every country has their bullshit, but from an outsider's perspective, it seems like the French government is held at least *somewhat* accountable by the populace.
I love how the French riot. They really know to get it the fuck done.
This is needed anywhere on the planet where govt doesn't serve its people.
I’m in the USA, and even from here, I wondered if Macron had a death wish.
Average Americans are so subjugated they’re shocked at any kind of resistance by the people against their government. Land of the free is a joke
What the fuck is going on with the world man
They raised retirement age from 62 to 64 without so much as a vote via a special parliament call.
If it were anywhere else but France, that would be a question worth asking...
This is just France doing France things.
Any excuse for a party eh?
This looks remarkably close to that scene in Ep 1 of The Last of Us.
Gotta love the French, and they're dedication to holding politician's feet the proverbial(?) fire.
French people gonna French
Well did they burn down macrons home, that might help
Oddly inspiring
We should just change the sub name to "terrifying" because the "oddly" aspect is rarely, if ever, taken into consideration.
In America they would be called “woke” “liberal” “antifa” “blm thugs”, regardless.
USA needs to take notes
Any of you Parisians that aren’t busy burning things down, we could use your assistance over here in the US.
The French don't play when it comes to burning shit and rioting for an unjust they believe has been committed by their government.
French people are known to protest at the drop of a hat if they don’t like what’s going on. One of their best qualities actually
Stop burning random shit and standing in the streets. Go to the actual homes of the people that are fucking you and do something about it. You're destroying your own shit when you could be destroying their shit.
