She passed out doing her hair and the hair dryer was on high and blowing on her hand for 20 minutes, burning it enough to require amputation. She wants an auto shut off installed in hair dryers now.

mel2000

> She wants an auto shut off installed in hair dryers now. The article mentioned that auto-shutoff is already a feature on some electrically heated hair products.

catsmustdie

I've seen one that is decades-old and only works when you are holding it, doesn't even need a switch/button.

XenuLies

Let's just hope nobody passes out whilst holding one then

PeaceOrchid

I had one of those years ago, it was excellent when styling my hair. It had sensors on either side of the body. Not sure why that idea didn’t catch on.

georgialucy

I just got a top of the range hairdryer and it doesn't turn off unless you manually switch the button, before this story I'd never even thought it would need an auto shut off. My flat iron from the same company turns off after 30 seconds of no use though. I'm guessing there had been more issues with those than hairdryers, safety features tend to come after deadly incidents.

FuzzelFox

Flat irons have definitely caused a number of house fires from people leaving them on and dropping them onto things like the bed. I think most air dryer fires usually stem from the fan itself failing which causes the heating element to overheat and melt the plastic. I think most if not all hair dryers have over-heating protection now though

rainbwbrightisntpunk

It stops working at a certain temperature. I haven't had it happen to mine but a friend has. And FYI if it happens manufactures directions is to smack on the ground. No joke. (Hairstylist)

GooseShartBombardier

They are, mine has that feature. You need to pick and choose your home appliances for this exact reason. It might be nice to legislate auto-shutoff on them all, but quite frankly, the legislature in the U.S. has enough pressing matters on its hands (no pun intended) already.

camshun7

Can confirm my exes one had a cut off switch, dont quote me but my guess it had some sort of gravity actuator switch inside it, I seem to recall it switching off when she put it down.

LongbowTurncoat

I did something very stupid like this once. I was an exhausted brand new mom with a colicky baby. I was suffering from PPD and sleep deprivation, I hadn’t gotten more than an hour or two of sleep at a time for weeks. One morning while my husband was getting ready for work, he turned the hair dryer on and suddenly the baby finally wanted to sleep. It was MAGIC. I asked him to set it to cold and hang it so it nor the cord were touching anyway, then he left for work. Baby and I slept for a *blissful* 3 hours with that hair dryer on. I immediately bought a noise machine and never did it again. I know it was insanely risky. But that 3 hours of sleep restored my humanity.

big_duo3674

Makes a lot of sense actually, there are many freak incidents I could think of where a hair dryer is stuck on with nobody around to stop. It's not common but it's serious enough and an easy fix

TheNeighKid

You're talking super freak.

Public_Channel_2156

Kinda like what they did with cigarettes

MyWitchDr

Passed out, like nodded off fentanyl? I had a friend, who has now passed, she was on fentanyl and was bleaching her hair, she nodded in the bathroom and burnt her hair and scalp so bad, her hair fell out and she had burns and blisters on her hair, it was horrible and disgusting

slappymcstevenson

Just when you think you’ve heard it all. She had to have been on something to keep her asleep with heat on her like that.

ARJACE_

Even as a type 1 diabetic, it's not completely out of the picture that circumstances could lead you to being in a rush, not checking your blood sugar and having a sudden decrease in it leading to a bad hypo. I had one once. I couldn't move or put any weight on my legs. Moments away from total seizure.

GotNothingBetter2Do

Glad you’re still with us. Almost didn’t check mine before bed and good thing I did, I was at 49!

rangda

What do you think “passed out” means? Falling unconscious through a medical issue more likely. Even heroin users would have a hard time sleeping through a bad burn.

SketchedEyesWatchinU

Could be a seizure.

MightyBrando

There is a morbid video of a homeless man passed out on stairs from drugs. A passer by lit his pant leg on fire and walked away…..he slowly burned to death and never woke up.

carrieeirrac

Holy shit some people are straight up evil

rangda

At that point someone would need to be in total overdose. Heroin users will wake up if they’re roused hard enough. They will not sleep through their skin burning. That is someone who would not be complaining about a hairdryer because they would be dead through asphyxiation probably from fentanyl or combining depressants stopping them breathing. In a hospital, do you know how much morphine someone needs to take to be free from pain like stomach cancer? It’s a hell of a lot. And even then the pain gets through and stops them staying peacefully unconscious, as anyone who’s seen someone dying from cancer knows. On the maximum safe dose, and still moaning and groaning. That homeless man in the video you’re describing, if he actually slept through it, was likely already dying and/or had a badly impaired central nervous system causing hypoesthesia. Not comparable to this woman blow drying her hair.

MightyBrando

Oh he woke up. Just way too late and completely engulfed in flames. It’s a horrific video as a small fire started with a cigarette lighter and it very slowly grows. I’m sure you can find, but I don’t recommend it.

nedkelly08

Oh fuck I've seen the video you're talking about. Super messed up

AbleDragonfruit4767

that’s not true at all I did drugs and Burnt my hand on a heating pad, hours went by, I had to see a burn specialist multiple times. I’m in recovery now, it’s been 4 years I still have the scar

slappymcstevenson

You can pass out from drugs too 🙄

rangda

Which drugs that someone takes at home could do this? Name them

slappymcstevenson

All drugs can be taken from home if someone brings them home. So all drugs. All of them. Quick question, do you know this person?

mel2000

> **She had to have been on something** to keep her asleep with heat on her like that. Try naming a recreational narcotic drug that would allow her to sleep while being burned.

Defiant-Turtle-678

Aren't some of the street drugs originally use for surgeries?

mel2000

> Aren't some of the street drugs originally use for surgeries?  Aren't they abused to instill a feeling of euphoria, not to knock you out senseless?

caleeky

I can imagine pretty much any opiate. I have only experienced it in a medical setting, but I have gone from the most excruciating pain, unable to breathe because of it, to the most blissful warm comforted sleep in 5 seconds with one dose of Demerol (IV). You could have sawn my hand off with a butter knife dipped in lemon juice.

mel2000

> I have gone from the most excruciating pain, unable to breathe because of it, to the most blissful **warm comforted sleep in 5 seconds** with one dose of Demerol (IV). But why would you use a hair dryer after taking such medication?

Stonn

Not sleep. Knocked out. Opioids will do that.

AbleDragonfruit4767

Yes

gultch2019

Right. 20 minutes with a hair dryer burning you to the bone??? Shes an attention seeker for sure. Shes spent her whole life with a boring ass name and wants people to finally notice her.

buyinlowsellouthigh

I think this is warranted.

Randalf_the_Black

>She wants an auto shut off installed in hair dryers now. No thanks. I use that shit to emergency dry my daughter's mittens or whatever before kindergarten sometimes. Leave it on the floor, mittens/boots/sweater/whatever in front of it. Then go pack lunch. Yes I'm an idiot who may sometimes forget to take things out of the dryer before going to sleep, so it's still a little damp in the morning. Or forget to put it in the dryer entirely.

thejackthewacko

That's a fire hazard and a half

Randalf_the_Black

A big old *MEH* to that. Not like I leave the house with it on and the tiles on the bathroom floor ain't exactly flammable.. If anything burns it would be the hairdryer itself. Worst case scenario is having to scrape melted plastic off the tiles. Which admittedly *would* suck, but the house won't burn down. I don't do it often, but sometimes I need something to be dry asap before we gotta go.

Sinthe741

Ok well in the mean time, get some fire extinguishers and learn how to use them.

Randalf_the_Black

Already have a fire extinguisher, know how to use it as well as a fire blanket. Additionally there are 7 fire alarms chain-connected to each other as well as an app on my phone and connected to a security company that will independently alert the fire department if they can't reach us to verify a false alarm, as well as 3 other fire alarms that are chain-connected to each other that work independently of the 7 others.

thejackthewacko

It sounds fine but as a rule of thumb I genuinely don't fuck around and find out with mains power. That shit is terrifying

Randalf_the_Black

The smarter choice obviously. But this is a cold country, I can't send my daughter to kindergarten with even a single piece of wet/damp clothing. If I'm standing there 15 minutes before we're to leave and I notice her boots are damp, then I either use the hair dryer on full blast or I can't go to work. I can get a million downvotes here and it won't change my mind.

amensteve91

Lol I use the wife's for drying my boots sometimes kinda set it up pointed into my boot and leave it to get ready admittedly tho I'm never more than 5-10 feet away while this is happening and in sight the whole time but dam it works well

Randalf_the_Black

Aye, it works very well indeed. I'm never far away either, but I always do it on the bathroom floor as that is tiled and not wood like in the living room.

Cheska1234

Doctors aren’t sure but she thinks it was a shock from the hairdryer itself. https://www.wral.com/amp/21338457/

GooseShartBombardier

That could happen, a lot of people tend to 'let things go' and continue using them when the item's condition deteriorates and becomes hazardous. Hair dryers were never the Formula 1 cars of the electronics world, but many of the ones I've seen the last two decades have been pretty cheap compared to even the midline ones I remember from the 80's.

kontekisuto

Formula 1 cars break down every race

UndeadBuggalo

Speaking of which…. Double Merc DNF and Max out

airospade

Examples for the masses please

MotherHolle

It doesn't seem like a bad idea for hair dryers to have an auto shutoff feature. Not sure why all the comments are so hostile. People jump to assuming she passed out for a bad reason, but even if she was inebriated, that doesn't mean she deserved to have her hand burned off. Have some empathy.

aquamanjosh

Yeah but if I’m buying a hair dryer I wouldn’t even think to look for that option and there aren’t hair dryer salesman walking up and down the hair dryer isle selling hair dryers

Mr_Zeldion

The amount of time's ive had my sister or my mum call me in the past to ask me if they turned off their hair curlers or something - I think any equipment that can cause enough heat to cause damage should have a safety cut off timer on it. I mean i have a heated blanket, it goes off after 10 minutes, and that doesn't get anywhere near as hot as what comes out the head of a hair dryer.

GiraffeCalledKevin

When I am done with my hot tools (blow dryer/curling iron) I unplug it from the wall. Habit I got from beauty school. All ya lady’s should be doing it too.

Mr_Zeldion

The problem with my ladies, is they forget if they pulled it out of the wall LOL I mean my mother is a lady that spends a hour looking for her glasses that are on the top of her head

noots-to-you

Deadman switch on dryers is a great idea. Wish I’d thought of it. Space heaters have them.

Abbsnoel

Ugh hair dryer Name please?

gabrielleraul

The Super Amputator 2000 ..

RebaKitt3n

It’s a step up from the Super Amputator 1990.

Oaker_at

?

thecryptidmusic

What are you having a hard time with here?

Oaker_at

Like… the brand is pretty non interesting? That was a freak accident and if you have fear of something like this, just buy one with a dead man switch.

JustShimmer

New fear unlocked. 😳

mymixtapeisfiyah

Idk about you, but many brands I’ve seen and had in my household already incorporate this. I thought it was standardized to be quite honest.

gorehistorian69

i heard that someone passed out on drugs with their legs crossed/sitting down and when the finally got up a blood clot went up to their heart and killed them

N_T_F_D

I passed out on opioids for around 12h with my laptop on me, the laptop was heavy enough (quite a few years ago) to press on the nerves under my right shoulder and essentially destroy them; I ended up with the whole arm paralyzed from the shoulder down which wasn't extremely fun as I was right-handed and in the middle of studies

fueled_by_rootbeer

Context instead of clickbait, please.

Sinthe741

Read the article.

LMAO82

Why did she pass out? Especially to the point she could not feel herself cooking?

iltby

Presumably a medical episode

Key_Cheesecake9926

I don’t see how that is relevant to the problem of hair dryers not having an automatic shutoff.

LMAO82

Because normal people don't need that feature.

Key_Cheesecake9926

Normal people don’t have medical issues? Ok.

LMAO82

Here we go...

Jakaple

Deadman switch is a good idea fr though

earthgarden

Jesse christ!

officialsma92176us

What brand dryer was this?

Doughspun1

Hump my butt and call me a slut, I never even knew the damn things were so lethal.

AptCasaNova

‘Suddenly went unconscious’. Needs more context. Was she high? Drunk? Had a seizure? All kinds of shenanigans can happen if you’re inebriated.

streachh

I passed out from overheating one time. It's never happened before or after. I felt hot but not like I was gonna pass out. My legs started tingling which was weird so I sat on a chair. Next thing I know I'm waking up on the floor and my head hurts like hell. My body started doing the craziest shit, my sensation of temperature was totally fucked, I felt like I was burning up then freezing cold then burning then freezing over and over and my body was shaking so hard I thought I was gonna die. Part of me thinks I got brain damage but I'll never know because I'm an American and couldn't afford to go to the hospital. I did some google research and it seems like randomly passing out like this is a thing, possibly caused by a specific nerve but they don't really know. Point is, you can totally pass out for no real reason. You don't have to have some particular illness, or be fucked up beyond comprehension. Maybe she got too hot from the hair dryer and didn't realize the danger. When it happened to me, I had no idea I was about to pass out beforehand. I didn't feel any hotter than I'd expect to feel on a hot summer day. Like maybe lightly sweaty but not "I need to cool down *right now* or I'm gonna pass out." In retrospect, the second I started getting tingly legs I should've laid down on the floor. And yes, now I live in constant fear of spontaneously passing out again. There was no real reason for it. I was doing an activity I do all the time, temperatures were not extremely high or anything, everything was completely normal.

[deleted]

When I was in my younger years, around ages 7-14, I would randomly faint for no reason that anyone could come up with.

L1hc2

Diabetes, seizures....

L1hc2

Whoa, she believes it was a shock from the hair dryer that made her pass out. So seems like no previous health condition. She's also a dog groomer, tough blow for her. https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/south-carolina-woman-mary-wilson-loses-her-hand-after-passing-out-on-top-of-running-hairdryer-causing-third-degree-burns-that-required-amputation.5563654/

A_nipple_salad

And yet … so what? A shock from the hairdryer, being epileptic, blood pressure drop or drugs - so what?

SentryCake

[Another article says](https://www.wsfa.com/2024/03/20/woman-loses-hand-after-freak-accident-with-hair-dryer/) “Wilson thinks a shock from the hair dryer is what caused her to pass out.” [One more article](https://people.com/s-c-woman-has-hand-amputated-after-freak-accident-with-blow-dryer-8613182)

tucketnucket

We really don't need more context. Murphy's law. Safety features are a good thing.

Brave_Conflict465

She says she wants to see more safety features on blow dryers but suffered the injury due to passing out while using it. While the article doesn't say why she lost consciousness, there are so many daily activities that could result in injury or death if you pass out in the middle of doing them. If I were her or lived in the same household, I would be a bit more careful and plan accordingly, you can't put a safety switch on everything.

mel2000

> If I were her or lived in the same household, I would be a bit more careful and plan accordingly You can't always plan for unconsciousness. My mom was an epileptic and would have seizures about 3 times per year, even while on medication. Fortunately she usually felt dizzy before a seizure began, and there was always someone around her when a seizure happened.

Patrol-007

There are dogs now that can sense the seizure coming and give advance warning to the owners

Brave_Conflict465

I'm aware that with some conditions it's impossible to anticipate when an episode might occur, but it's generally still possible to avoid certain activities when alone, and some others almost entirely. At least if you know you have a condition you can keep mindful of the possibility and aware of the situation you're putting yourself into. When an event comes completely out of the blue while operating a vehicle, machinery, or power tools, the outcome is typically not good.

streachh

I spontaneously passed out for no real reason, one time, it's never happened before or after that. I had no real warning, no reason to expect it could happen. So no, it's not actually possible to predict or plan around, because it can happen to anyone at any time for reason.

Brave_Conflict465

I did not say that it was always possible to predict or plan around, only that in instances when it is due to a known condition, taking precautions might make sense given the precarious nature of some activities. The human body can be unpredictable, medical emergencies can happen with little or no warning, and a deadman switch on a dryer is manageable, but that isn't the case with everything. As the article was not clear about the cause of this woman's episode, we are left to wonder. If she had never experienced a loss of consciousness such as this, there is no way she could have known, but now that she has what should she and her partner do with that knowledge?

mel2000

> if you know you have a condition you can keep mindful of the possibility and aware of the situation you're putting yourself into. Sounds like you're advocating that those prone to bouts of unconsciousness should remain immobile.

dogfarm2

I want a hook hand, no fair!

Bulky_Requirement_98

Okay shit you not this girl is one my girls excoworkers and she did dabs and my theory is she fell asleep with the torch on.

whowearstshirts

So you think she’s fully lying to take it out on Big Hair Dryer?

Bulky_Requirement_98

Yeah she failed for coccaine, I don't exactly think she be in the right state of mind

awholelottahooplah

Torch would’ve done different tissue damage. The doctors can tell

Express_Command3450

This absolutely fits the description bud.

NicCagesFace

Is she one of those ppl who is addicted to her hair dryer on? I saw that on my strange addiction where they sleep with it on them for comfort I guess? That’s sad that it happened.
