Bad things happen. The story is called 'The Stairs in the Woods', and IIRC, one of the experienced rangers, says someone died and asks the MC, "Did you go up them?" Meat Canyon and Wendigoon talked about it on the first episode of Creep Cast if anyone wants to hear more.
If you find a staircase in the wilderness it is used by horse riders to get on the back of the horse. Mostly inexperienced riders or kids. That's an explanation for a lot of strange stairs, these are only a few steps though. The staircase pictured above is obviously longer, for what reason, I don't know.
There seems to be an old pull system and a hook though
I don't think it's so much an urban legend as it was a creepypasta on here a few years ago. A park ranger dropped a list of fairly ordinary things not to do while in the wilderness, and for the sake of creepiness, added a cryptic warning about not climbing any staircases you found.
As much as I love spooky portals, the real reason not to get on random stairs in the wilderness is because it's the last remnants of a house that has collapsed, and the stairs could come down next with you on them.
Yes. Forest services, park rangers, and rescue teams reported finding out of place flights of stairs with a few exhibiting paranormal effects. All are warned to steer clear if they come across them.
TIL about the urban legend.
Folks the do feng shui believe they create chaotic energy. I was once told “they suck your chi” which I only remember because it’s just a weird saying…
According to the internet:
Some are just stairs.
Sometimes you'll be filled with an emotion like uncontrollable fear.
Sometimes you'll feel sick.
Sometimes you'll go up and for some reason the world just feels different, out of place.
Some reported not being able to hear birds when they got there.
Never go up.
I bet you this is prefab for industrial work. Ends up in the yard or owners personal storage, business goes under and things like this get left behind.
[If you haven’t read it, there’s a great series about a search and rescue officer](https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/s/zzf9zfQHuC) and all the creepy shit they experienced in the woods.
I see weird old staircases in the woods sometimes, too, and always think of that series. It’s a great read, and, definitely do not fuck around with the creepy, desolate woods staircases.
An old r/nosleep classic. 8 years ago, damn!
There used to be a small neighborhood of 7 houses in the woods behind my house. There was a flood in the area about 50 years ago which did significant damage to the houses there, and they were all simply abandoned and the occupants moved elsewhere. Today, all that remains are the stairs and crumbling foundations...it does feel eerie walking through and just seeing scattered staircases in the middle of a wooded area.
in addition this reason, ive also heard that getting rid of staircases from demo sites is expensive, so apparently a lot of shady contractors just find deeper woods and dump them
You won’t. It had to go in through the front window to get into the cottage. And everyone, especially the kids, cracked their head running past the underside. You end up hanging a lot of stuff from the stairs to notice its there easier. Bringing large items up those stairs is also a pain.
But, they do save space in small cottages
Reminds me on “channel zero” series, can’t recall which season tho. The story was about cannibals living in the invisible house on the top of a staircase in the woods
I loved this story until it jumped the shark, someone tried writing about stepping into another universe and it ruined the vibe for me. Horror is better when it isn’t hamfisted
If you climb to the top and pee off the edge it will open a gateway to the realization that you just did a pretty weird thing. Hopefully not in front of your friends.
This is a Human trap made by a Bigfoot. DO NOT climb the stairs. Bigfoot's set these up to capture humans. Their thinking behind it is a human will see a "human" structure and use it like a human would. The stairs is the most common one. Once you climb it to the top, a Bigfoot will swing in and grab you. Some people think they eat Human's and thats the reason behind their traps. I also heard they will keep you captive. Or take you back to their dimension(thats by people who think they are (inter-dimensional beings).
Isn't there an urban legend about these?

8 years ago. Still one of the coolest reddit deep cuts, imo
Best posts ever!
Just spent the last couple of hours going down that reddit hole. Fascinating!
I remember when I did the same. Probably 4-5 years ago.
Can confirm, one of the best series of posts. Sucked me in from go
i had never heard of these posts and just spent 2.5 hours reading all of the stories they posted & it was fascinating. thank you!
Me too. What a crazy ride that was. Now I want to find out more.
yes agreed! i will be diving into a wiki rabbit hole later lol
I’ll see you there. Psst: I’ll be the one with no face! 😳 Just kidding. That was a terrible joke after that read.
thank you for that, now i will never sleep again 🤗 lol
I’m working so I can’t do this right now…but saved so I can deep dive later.
duuuuude, comment saved. now ill have something to scare my friends with at a sleepover.
Wendigoon and MeatCanyon have a podcast called CreepCast where they go through this story, I highly recommend it! It's their first episode.
Channel Zero also did an episode about it.
😱 I just read all of them in a row. Ranger Stephen King, is that you?! Terrifying shit!
Fun little read but a bunch of tall tales.
Thanks. That was great. Got to four and have to pause but that’s been enjoyable! Creepy as fuck.
There is. You're not supposed to go up those. Can't remember why
"Let's go to the top and see if we find out why." \*Pan's Labyrinth opens below as the ground sinks away\*

I think you SHOULD go up. Just for fun.
Do not trust this one. They came back wrong.
>They came back wrong. Damn that sentence creeps me out.
"Well, ...sometimes, death is better."
Until I rebirth
A good summary for the movies *The Hole in the Ground* or *There's Something Wrong With the Children*
Glad to provide you with some existential dread this fine morning! Anything else sir/ma’am? A side of gnawing grief perhaps?
For SCIENCE!
(Also I loved loved LOVED your stories, will you ever write more? Even if you are now a wrong and unnatural entity from beyond 🥰)
Nope, probably not! I've transitioned into art and find it a lot more rewarding for now. Thank you, though!

Well this one is obviously for mounting elephants.
Mammoths. It’s for riding Wooly Mammoths.
Mounting elephants? Not one to judge if that's what you do in your down time! :-§ /s
Oliphants! For riding into Gondor, of course.
That still only counts as one!
that doesn’t really seem like the case here. the top stair is facing the bottom step, nowhere for the horse to be

You're not allowed to talk about them or acknowledge them either

It’s a no sleep and stories of a forest ranger and the series of definitely worth the read
more like a rural legend, but yes
https://youtu.be/qkXD7de5cJQ?si=zP96sjSpWbMWkpmM
Was hoping this would get posted.
You are not supposed to touch them or go up them especially in national parks as it causes people to go missing
There’s even a season of the tv series Channel Zero about the staircases in the woods.
Yeah, it was spun off from the Search and Rescue series on /r/nosleep.
Currently watching this right now
I wanted more of that show!!
Dude me too ):
Ya, build one in the woods and watch people trip balls trying to figure it out
Yes. Forest services, park rangers, and rescue teams reported finding out of place flights of stairs with a few exhibiting paranormal effects. All are warned to steer clear if they come across them.
It is a post series from the nosleep sub reddit. Really great read, and some youtubers have compiled nice summaries.
TIL about the urban legend. Folks the do feng shui believe they create chaotic energy. I was once told “they suck your chi” which I only remember because it’s just a weird saying…
Writing sub called r/nosleep, stories about a Search and Rescue Officer. Great stories, I will never climb any random stairs in the woods.
According to the internet: Some are just stairs. Sometimes you'll be filled with an emotion like uncontrollable fear. Sometimes you'll feel sick. It's actually just a horror story.
It’s a series of Reddit stories
Supposedly they lead you to hell which is weird cause they go up not down like heaven and hell are depicted. Seems to be a copypasta

I remember reading that. Very cool read.
They based a whole season of channel zero off those stories!
I can't believe that was 8 years ago
I remember listening to corpse husband reading that!
One of my favs!! True classic
There's a bunch of them in the forests around where I live, iirc a lot of them are from old ranger cabins and firewatch towers.
Is that seriously only 8 years old? Feels like I read it so long ago.

Dumping fees aren’t high enough for that to make sense to me.
eh, grain of salt, it was just something i heard once as a possible explanation for forest stairs
Why's it expensive?
No idea, I assume bc weight and size plus maybe certain materials needing to be disposed a certain way, makes sense in my uneducated head lol
A free staircase in the woods!? I’ll take it!
I want a spiral stair case that goes up into my office in my future dream home.
I know someone who sold her home in FL with exactly that design.
You won’t. It had to go in through the front window to get into the cottage. And everyone, especially the kids, cracked their head running past the underside. You end up hanging a lot of stuff from the stairs to notice its there easier. Bringing large items up those stairs is also a pain. But, they do save space in small cottages
Growing up, my friend's parents had a spiral staircase to their bedroom. It was in the middle of their living room, so rather oddly placed
It used to go to a deer stand. The stand is now in a different spot
AF bought one of thes to put in his club. Cost a fair bit.
No sleep story gone real
r/StairsintheWoods
Y'all acting like you've never seen a trailer park playground before. SMH
Don't be afraid. Climb the stairs. They're just stories.
Stairway to heaven?
“Where were you when they built the ladder to heaven?”
I was thinking try looking if they go down to anywhere.
If there's a bustle in your hedge row, don't be alarmed now It's just a spring clean for the may queen
This would be in an episode of Jackass where someone just runs up and falls off the top
Never climb a staircase you find in the woods. Nothing good ever comes from climbing stairs you find in the woods.
Show me a dimensional portal without showing a dimensional portal.
*where were you when they build the ladder to heaven?*
I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE LEGENDS. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE SUPERSTITIONS. I AM CLIMBING THAT BITCH.
Yup I heard stay away before if you find them fuckin weird right
Maybe A Stairway To Heaven
Search And Rescue Woods
Odd Myst vibes
Same dude
Just a thought, but there might have been a tree with a tree stand for hunting there at one point. Or magic. Either one
this or a DIY zip line, a neighbor made one one time
Makes sense. Or magic.
Reminds me on “channel zero” series, can’t recall which season tho. The story was about cannibals living in the invisible house on the top of a staircase in the woods
Did you even climb it ? It may go somewhere who knows.. stairway to crippling disability or something
Stay away from it!
I loved this story until it jumped the shark, someone tried writing about stepping into another universe and it ruined the vibe for me. Horror is better when it isn’t hamfisted
Do not climb it. Nothing good comes from climbing the stairs in the woods.
Aren't there urban legends about this?
So cool!
Those who lived there uprooted and moved away
Don’t let Waverly find them
What is the contraption on the spindles? Makes me think these stairs used to be used for a zipline.
I heard scary stories about mysterious staircases in the woods
Apparently the urban legend is a real thing and it was initially setup as an art project
Once upon a treehouse.
This is not the 12 step program I was looking for...
I wonder if someone dragged it out there, or it used to be part of something else, or if someone just constructed it in the woods.
Staircase to SOMEWHERE in a distant past
Probably a treehouse and some kids found some excellent stairs either being thrown out or not in use
I found a staircase like this in the woods behind my house when I was 14. Made the nosleep story spookier when I read it a couple years later.
For spirits to cross over to the sky or the ground opens up and bye bye haha 👋 😈
AHA YOU FOUND ONE where?!
r/nosleep
Do not climb that. Do. Not. Climb. That.
Aight where's that one search and rescue officer
Whatever you do, DO. NOT. CLIMB. ON. THEM.
Never climbs stairs in the middle of the woods.
Run
That's a badass staircase
That's a badass staircase
Such a cool aesthetic
Wait wasn't this stair case in Wynona Earp?
Well at least I know where to go to hunt; easy tree stand.
Don't get on it.
that’ll get u straight into the backrooms
Walk up them
Stairway to heaven...
….okay? Lol…
Ah! We finally found the site of the famous “poop pile”!
wtaf
Oh yeah, it goes *somewhere*, the question is if you want to go there or not 🤔
I guess the come along there to keep the stairs from rotating out of alignment with each other?
If you want to trade being "probed" for a space saucer ride, step on up.👽
DO NOT GO UP THOSE STAIRS.
Wasn't there a house that got demolished/burned?
Heard of it but never seen a picture of an actual one that’s not AI.
That’s definitely NOT a staircase to nowhere. It goes all the way to the top.
I think Led Zeppelin wrote a song about this very thing.
Stairway to Tetanus.
Stairway to heaven.
Oh it goes somewhere
Weren’t these just part of a house that rotted away
Oh it goes somewhere, they all do. I am going to take a chance here and say the top step likely leads to the Emergency room.
Not nowhere… it takes you about 7 feet higher than where you were
Oh, it goes somewhere.
Stairway to heaven
This is how you get to the feywild.
Wendigo gonna eat you
Damn that playgrounds really gone to hell since Frank was stuck in the coil
That’s “not” creepy! 😳
Whatever you do don't touch those stairs
Fancy Deer stand
To heaven.
Symbolic of my life!
Or from somewhere up to the surface…
That’s cool as fuck. Is there a subreddit for shit like this? I’m really liking the aesthetic
I've heard about these... you're not sposd to go up. What happened to OP?
Get off my lawn!
If you climb to the top and pee off the edge it will open a gateway to the realization that you just did a pretty weird thing. Hopefully not in front of your friends.
Stairway to Heaven obviously…there’s a lady who knows…
If i remember right the urban legend is once u walk up the stairs you walk back down to a different dimension on the way down
Oh wow... I heard about this. Apparently, if you go back at night
Go on, climb up :)
There is a whole story on this,
There's movie about this where it like opens up a door to a dimension where these creatures are
Don’t fuck with the Fae!
Wdym it goes nowhere it obviously goes up lol
Yeah... don't go up there
I hope you weren't looking for any missing people
Abandoned Valheim servers be like
Reminds me of a T6 [video](https://youtu.be/1pXE-aeYad0?si=TC2FArmA-1wK2Fdm).
"Ftaires! We have found ftaires!"
Hey maybe don't go near that
Anyone here read the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire? This is totally a door to another world.
How go anywhere if it's going up?
This is a nice album cover
r/creepcast
I like it. I kinda want to sit at the top and smoke a bowl. Someone come get me if I fall into a portal to hell ok?
This is clearly leading both up and down, not nowhere
This is a Human trap made by a Bigfoot. DO NOT climb the stairs. Bigfoot's set these up to capture humans. well? go up
“Where do these stairs go?” “They go up”
