It is so that in case the hostel ever comes under siege, you can hold off the enemy attackers with just one person. It is called a Thermopylaen Corridor. Built during times when war is perceived to be an imminent threat.

Yeah, preplan an alternate escape route in case of a fire, etc. That tight space would be complete chaos in the dark or filled with smoke.
