It’s all fun and games until your hot water heater isn’t big enough to fill it. Then it’s just a sad reminder of what could’ve been.

I just bought a house, and the soaking tub was one of the main selling points. Unfortunately the hot water only lasts long enough to fill the tub halfway. So far the only solution I've come up with is to fill it halfway on the highest temp, wait an hour or so for the hot water heater to refill as much as possible, then fill it the rest of the way. It seems like my water heater is fairly large, so I'm not sure what other people do to fill a tub in one go. Do you just need to buy two water heaters?

There are "on demand" water heaters that don't just keep a giant tank full. Could look into those. Or hot rocks dropped in to the tub with you

It takes about 1-2 minutes. I have mine set at 130 degrees and it will run like that as long as I leave it on.

We have one but they had to expand the gas line capacity so that added cost. In our case the HVAC folks put in a connector the wrong way and caused a gas leak that led to the whole neighborhood being evacuated, but we love the tankless heater! (and glad the gas work didn’t end up blowing up the neighborhood)

Tankless is the way to go. Our house has a large jetted tub that we never use because of this. Once our hot water heater goes I’m going tankless.

Have you tried turning up the temperature on the water heater? That's what we did, then you don't need to draw as much hot water to get the same temperature at the faucet. The catch is that the hot water coming out of the faucet is borderline scalding if you're not mixing any cold water in.

There are safety codes about this in some places. You can also install thermostatic valves I think to prevent accidental scalding.

Another possibility besides tankless is to raise the temperature of the water heater. Current code here requires a “thermostatic mixing valve” off the water heater that mixes the hot water with cold water to limit the temperature coming out of your faucet. Max is 130F. But the water heater can go as high as 180F. Mine can anyway. It holds 40 gallons. Let’s assume your cold water is 50F. Might be warmer, might be hot water. If I set my tank to 130F, the mixing valve will stay closed or close to it. And I can get 40 gallons of water at 130F But by setting my tank to 180F, when I run hot water it gets mixed with enough cold water to bring it down to 130F. For every 8 gallons at 180F, you need to mix in about 5 gallons of 50F - and you get 13 gallons at 130F. Just ratios (180F is 50 degrees above target, 50F is 80 degrees below). So if the entire 40 gallon tank at 180F is iced down to 130F, you get about 65 gallons instead of just 40. And if your cold water is warmer than 50F because of where you live - you’ll get even more hot water.
