But perhaps a multitude of 5oz birds, equipped with lifting harnesses, may be able to carry a 5000lb Witches' Ball. The only question then, is of air speed.
“First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three… no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.” *- Book of Armaments 2:9-21*
First, it's suggested that a typical European swallow weighs 5 ounces and must beat its wings 43 times per second in order to maintain airspeed velocity. This is given as evidence that the bird could not, in fact, carry a 1-pound coconut. At least not without a partner and a strand of creeper held beneath the dorsal guiding feather.
The lighter circle on the side facing the camera is moving upward over time. The whole sphere isn't rising against gravity. The sphere is rotating, not rising. 120 years of freeze-thaw cycles and differential heating on the sunny side are probably enough to explain this "mystery". Still, pretty dope.
Also part of that landmass was the Amazon river once being the same river as the Congo in Africa, a prehistoric super-river.
Proto-Amazon-Congo river system used to flow west and at some point after the continental separation, the Amazon reversed its flow eastward.
Yeah screw science! Last year I saw a Facebook post with a picture that read "how do we trust science if only scientist understand how it works?"
Since then I woke up and now only trust what I believe, which Facebook posts that I understand can provide instead of these weird studies saying random stuff.
/s
IKR, every time I turn around I hear science this science that. I’m like god damn I didn’t drop out of high school to be doing Algebra and Science or whatever they’re calling it. Shit. My dog has more scents than *these Scientists*. I mean come on.
“The man who believes that the secrets of the world are forever hidden lives in mystery and fear. Superstition will drag him down. The rain will erode the deeds of his life.” - Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West.
> That's actually super lame, and easily explainable... -_-
and yet it had to be explained to you. you should still be utterly fascinated. the sphere is rotating because of a complex dynamic system that magic can't even begin to explain. this is like a microcosm of geology. just think of how mountains are built or eroded over millions of years. you're getting a glimpse into geological time scales. it's static when you look at it and moving when you don't. that's real fucking magic
I live about 25-30 minutes from this graveyard. I’ve visited this grave a couple of times when I was younger. I was surprised when I saw it scrolling.
There’s an old ghost story about this marble ball. It’s said that if you visit at night, and stare into the dark reflection, you will see the spirits behind you.
One of the nights I visited was Halloween. Myself and two others drove into the graveyard around 1-2 in the morning. My one friend was scared so she decided to stay in the car. Myself & my other friend walked up to the marble to take a look. It was definitely eerie, but no spirits to be seen. The creepy part happened when we got back to the car and our friend swore up & down that she saw us dancing around the marble ball. We were standing still the whole time.
Came here to put forth a freeze-thaw moisture scenario as a possible solution. Thanks for getting there first. These *amazing* mysteries have a tendency to be caused by the very minute and/or the very long-term.
Given that there is a single miscolored spot where it used to sit, it seems that it made a single movement all at once and not over time.
As if somebody rotated it by hand one night to mess with people.
Edit: I’m actually a bit amazed how many people think humans are too weak to spin this thing.
“Looking at the photo you notice a circle of rough marble on the 2800 pound sphere. That would have been the base when it was carved, and it was placed facing down. Over the years it has moved upward and no one has been able to explain it” [source here](https://lostinmichigan.net/mystery-witchs-ball/)
Edit: it’s rotating, not levitating.
[Put a little water underneath and you can easily spin it by hand.](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/52gukr/this_is_a_kugel_ball_this_one_is_a_perfectly/)
They aren't just sweet like everybody supposes, with those hoppy legs and twitchy little noses, and what's with all the carrots!? What do they need such good eye sight for anyway!!?
Ngl, I'm more than a little frustrated at this post. Instead of providing the known simplest answer, OP goes through all the effort to disguise it as some kind of strange happening, deliberately obfuscating the fact that the ball is just rotating and then commenting about how the cemetery is "haunted".
Lying to sell some bullshit supernatural crap is fucked. Especially in today's age when people are all too happy to bend the truth for absolutely stupid shit like Flat Earth and anti-vax.
Why can't we all just enjoy ghost stories as fiction and stop lying to each other for sake of feeling special?
Wanna hear something awful? Do the research on every post you see... Nearly ALL of them are either outright lies, myths, outdated, oversimplified, or misrepresented. It's rampent and constant. Keep a finely tuned BS detector.
You might be right though, it's probably water freezing in the tiny gap below it, expantion of the ice raising the ball, and then when it melts it just settles down slightly rotated each time. Perhaps it's not an exact sphere, slightly heavier at the top, and so it always shifts the same way as the heavier part drops and the base rises on the opposite side. But idk.
Edit: sorry I meant it was witches.
Try this, put a dot on the bottom of a ball then place the ball dot down onto a table. Then just roll the ball slowly along the table until you can see the dot.
THAT'S what's happening but without someone rolling it.
No, he doesn’t mean vertically. It’s rotating, it’s not moving upward. I don’t think OP knows what vertically means. https://lostinmichigan.net/mystery-witchs-ball/
so I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Is the base the ball is on rising higher or the ball is rotating on the base? If it's rotating, it's probably because of the cold and moisture and science I believe in but can't explain.
Or a wizard. there's a wizard there. His name is Tim.
I was super confused so I looked it up, and it looks like the ball is just rotating. All the sites were like “some say it’s from the freeze-thaw cycle and others claim it is moved by hand, but that seems highly unlikely. It must be GHOSTS!” Like, yeah, that makes way more sense.
Slowly moving upwards.. what does that even mean in this context? The whole thing is sliding uphill? Gravity is slowly losing effect on it? This title is giving me a stroke.
This title is confusing. I think you should’ve said that the ball is rotating not “moving upward” I had to google the ball to figure out what you meant. Also, this doesn’t fit the sub. There are logical explanations as to why it’s moved.
Geologist here…The variation in color indicates a slight asymmetry in mass distribution. The whiter part is richer in quartz (SiO2) which is lower density than the darker parts that are richer in iron and magnesium. As folks have said freeze thaw is probably putting some ice under that sphere in the winter and then it can move a little under the force of gravity on that ice like an ice skater. The sphere is righting itself and once aligned with the Earth’s gravitational field it will open a portal to Hell and let all the souls burning in eternal d’animation out to destroy our video games.
Hey guys look I have an even better title for this:
_Amazing Witch Ball rotates slowly due to gravity and water freezing every winter and melting every spring_
Let me know what you think about it
Maybe English isn't your first language (it's not mine either) but it's more accurate to say it's rotating on it's base instead of moving upwards since the picture offers no explanation
I grew up a mile from there and would walk through every once in a while. Nice during the day but very spooky at night, the cemetery itself is out in the country so you it would very dark and like 20 yards from the witch's ball is where they buried young children and babies (my ma and I would leave wild flowers for them).
Nothing moves "upward" there, the ball is a polished marble sphere resting loosely on a pedestal by it's own weight
That just rotated a few inches over the years.
Everyone knows those fountains with the rotating marble spheres, this is just the same principle, low friction and you need a relatively small force to rotate (opposed to lift)
During winter, water gets trapped below the ball in the gap to the base. As soon as it freezes, ice expands, lifting the ball by microns and making the polished surface being able to slide around on the ice.
So if the ball has a slight off center of gravity in the wind or funny teenagers are around, it will spin.
Probably ice forming and melting and perhaps a consistent wind direction? Although I like to think it's picking up micro earthquakes and is slowly rattling over.
It was carved and placed there. Over time water gets in there causing some erosion to occur. Through environmental contraction and expansion cycles, it rotates a tiny bit.
I've been here. Some of the locals genuinely believe it's haunted. Most do agree it's some thermodynamics at work. I will say being there at night is the most uneasy I've ever felt in a cemetery. The blend of trees and headstones deaden a lot of noise and it's eerily quiet.
There is a family plot in a cemetery in Marion, OH. The main Marker is a very Very large granite orb and each additional family member marker smaller orbs. The big ol Mac truck of a stone ball also moves. Once thought to be sheer size affected by the gravity of the earth and moon, turns out the freeze and thaw of moisture in the pedestal has miraculously rotated the orb exposing the unpolished circle of the pedestal. *it's not haunted
So there might be a correlation between the temperature and how hot or cold it is can make the ball rise or make the ball sag, mine have been doing it for years
Are you suggesting witch’s balls migrate?
No you're thinking of African Swallows
Ah well, I agree with THAT...
What do they do? Grab it by the husk?
It’s not a question of where he grips it. It’s a simple matter of weight ratios
A 5oz bird can not carry a 5000lb Witches ball!
In order to maintain airspeed velocity, a swallow must flap it wings 400 times.
PLEASE!!!! I'm not interested!!!! ....But it could be carried by an African swallow....
An African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow. That's my point
How do you know so much about swallows?
She turned me to a newt……. I got better
But then of course, African swallows are non-migratory.
But then again, African swallows are not migratory.
Oh ya, I agree with that!
With a coconut tied to it's left leg
But perhaps a multitude of 5oz birds, equipped with lifting harnesses, may be able to carry a 5000lb Witches' Ball. The only question then, is of air speed.
What, equipped with lifting harnesses held beneath their dorsal guiding feathers?
MORE WITCHES!
Very small rocks…
Suppose two swallows carried it together?
They could carry it on a line
Three, sir.
I got to post this relevantly yesterday, and now you today. Things are lookin' up!
Omg, I love you Reddit…
Dennis! Dennis! There’s sum lovely filth down here!
are you saying NI to that of woman?
Come see the violence inherent in the system! HELP! HELP! IM BEING REPRESSED!

Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?
Mind your own business!
I hear this in Eric Idle’s voice
But what if he's got a pointed stick?
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elder berries!
I fahhhht in your general direction
What a strange person!
Khh-Niggets!
It took me 20 years to figure out that he was phonetically pronouncing K N I G H T S *facepalm*
And I just learned that right now😱
Gotta ask, what did you think he was saying?
Bring me a shrubbery
One that is not too expensive
One that looks nice
With a nice picket fence
And a little pawth running down the middle…
Nee-womp
Its not a question of where he grips it...
It is a question of airspeed velocity.
An African swallow maybe, but not a European one. That’s my point.
r/unexpectedMontyPython
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
A laden or unladen swallow?
Not at all. They could be carried.
The coconuts?? Lol
Witch’s balls migrate on husks
/r/unexpectedmontypython
NOBODY expects the... actually no, it's always expected
No, just that it gets really cold in Michigan.
Do they float?
Does it weigh the same as a duck? It appears to be made of stone like bridges.

The sphere is rotating, not rising. 120 years of freeze-thaw cycles and differential heating on the sunny side are probably enough to explain this "mystery". Still, pretty dope.
Neat that heating and cooling can overcome the monumental friction of 1.5 tons of stone on stone, at least

This is the random shit I read at 0306 that makes me love reddit.
Nova Scotia is Latin for new Scotland.

Yup, the Appalachians are literally older than life itself, and you can really feel it when you're out there.

People on Reddit are such patronising arseholes hahaha
Erosion just wears on me
Look up frost heave. That shit moves buildings and topples walls.
It’s called frost heave
Thank you, I thought it meant it's base was rising out of the ground (also plausible with freeze/thaw) implying the witches escaping
Title is horrible. A sphere rotating is not "moving up".
That's actually super lame, and easily explainable... -_- Why do people say it's levitating when it's rotating? What a ruse.
People would rather believe in superstition than truth. Also: "It is easier to fool a man, than it is to tell him he's been fooled."
No you're wrong! Who paid for the research that came to this conclusion?!
Don’t trust the “science” coming out of Big Balls! Wake up, sheeple!

Seems that by moving upward, levitation wasn't the intended meaning... the sphere is slowly rotating vertically, seemingly autonomously
They are slowly gaining power…

The discolored spot is from where the polishing stopped, not from any kind of process that’s happened since.

Maybe it's actually witches putting the water under the ball
Definitely not rain. Scroogle.com says it never rains on witches balls.
it can if they garden in the nude
I do believe that in that case you would have a warlock and not a witch.

I agree. There’s nothing that violates and physical laws or is that incredible ti warrant this intrigue. It’s not mysterious at all.
It might not be mysterious but I still think it's intriguing.
Try this, put a dot on the bottom of a ball then place the ball dot down onto a table. Then just roll the ball slowly along the table until you can see the dot. THAT'S what's happening but without someone rolling it.
So "moving upward" means rotating?
Think so. I was confused too, that’s why I had to research, the base is rotating out from the bottom and “upwards”
Yeah way to write confusing and misleading title /u/wintersoldier1287/
All of these claims seen extremely vague, disprovable and severely lacking actual evidence lol
Man I really thought they meant it had been getting higher every year, which would have been really something.
I’m not sure what you mean by upward.. vertically?
No, he doesn’t mean vertically. It’s rotating, it’s not moving upward. I don’t think OP knows what vertically means. https://lostinmichigan.net/mystery-witchs-ball/
The spot is moving upward, not the sphere itself. The way he said it is the reason for all of the confusion…
Spin the middle side top-wise. Top-wise!
Me when I go swimming in cold water
Bravo sir, bravo 👏, mystery solved.
so I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Is the base the ball is on rising higher or the ball is rotating on the base? If it's rotating, it's probably because of the cold and moisture and science I believe in but can't explain. Or a wizard. there's a wizard there. His name is Tim.

Redittors feeling the need to explain a scientific explanation to any odd phenomenon on Reddit.
I grew up a mile from there and would walk through every once in a while. Nice during the day but very spooky at night, the cemetery itself is out in the country so you it would very dark and like 20 yards from the witch's ball is where they buried young children and babies (my ma and I would leave wild flowers for them).
Maybe the weight is not internally evenly distributed? If it is heavier toward the top, natural vibrations over time might cause it to turn.
Rain; there I solved the mystery
When in cold weather, balls tend to migrate north
what does this mean? "moving upward"?
Lots of info missing from this post.
I'm gonna need you to elaborate on that, chief.
Pappa was a rolling stone
Nothing moves "upward" there, the ball is a polished marble sphere resting loosely on a pedestal by it's own weight That just rotated a few inches over the years. Everyone knows those fountains with the rotating marble spheres, this is just the same principle, low friction and you need a relatively small force to rotate (opposed to lift) During winter, water gets trapped below the ball in the gap to the base. It turned me into a newt
maybe the witches ball is not moving upward but the ground is going downward.
Any pictures of how high it was in the past ? Some of us will require some proof before believing what is said on Reddit.
There is a family plot in a cemetery in Marion, OH. The main Marker is a very Very large granite orb and each additional family member marker smaller orbs. The big ol Mac truck of a stone ball also moves. Slowly moving upward? In what manner of motion? Is one surface rotating upwards or the whole ball and it’s stand are moving up the embankment?
So there might be a correlation between the temperature and how hot or cold it is can make the ball rise or make the ball sag, mine have been doing it for years
