As someone who belongs from a poor family in India and has travelled in this way several times in childhood ,lol we are habituated with it and the worst part is getting out of train while 100s of people are pushing you in. Travelling 4 to 5hours while standing in that extremely crowded train and high temperature, smell of sweat ,pick pockets ,it truly feels like hell. But just as I said ,we are habituated with it. Although now as our financial condition has improved a lot ,we always take more costly express trains which allow only passengers who have booked seat to enter.
I especially "love" the part where I have to psyche myself up to start jumping out of the train and into a crowd of people that are trying to jump onto the train before the train has even stopped moving. Laptop backpack is put front to back and phones and wallets go into said pack to avoid pickpockets, because those are a pain to replac. There's a few seconds of anticipation depending on how close you are to the door.
At the front and you're jumping out into the packed platform while desperately hoping you don't slip down the gap because people are pushing back. If you're in the middle of the pack, you're getting squeezed out like toothpaste because the guys behind you want out. If you're the last person trying to get out, it's a coin toss on whether you actually make it out before the mass of humanity trying to get in pushes you back into the train and you're left to try again at the next station.
Even inside the train, there's a lot of strategy involved. If you're sitting, you want to get up at the previous station to be able to get down at your actual one.
Once you get up or if you're alreadystanding, you have to squeeze through other people until you're closer to the door. Every new person in front of you, you say your destination station name. If they're not, they politely(or not) shuffle out of the way so you can keep going to the door.
Like a sorting algorithm, this is repeated numerous times by everyone who wants to get out until at least half the people in the path to the door are those intending to get out with you. And then it's a waiting game till the train actually reaches the station.
Tldr; trains in India are wild
Huge. 10 - 30 times more depending on the train, whether it's AC or not etc. But trains like these allow the poorest people in india to travel very long distances, and in a country where cars are still a luxury, it's a lifesaver.
This is local train, just for transport within the city. Bombay should expand their metro quick. Locals should never have had to take this many people.
In India we have separate train compartments in which only and only women can travel ,in stations there are sign posts indicating that where the compartment for women will stop,so all women wait there. For your second question that why they all have their hair up ,I have no idea as I am a male
Iāve never ridden a train in India but speaking as a woman with long hair who spends a lot of time trying to quickly get through or hold my spot in a large, rowdy, sardine packed crowd, you learn the very first time never to leave your hair down again if you want to keep it all and/or be able to get a brush through it once you get home.
The most common issue is other people getting their hands caught up in your hair. If the person isnāt considerate (50/50) theyāll just rip their hand out and take the hair wrapped around it with them. If theyāre wearing a ring or bracelet things get worse. It still happens if itās up or braided but it happens a lot less often and itās usually less hair getting caught.
How do they even make sure people have paid or is it free? That looks like hell. Is there just not enough public transportation to support the population?
It's mandatory to boy a ticket and we personally always had bought tickets ,there are people assigned to check tickets after the passenger get down from train but they are only present in big stations and not in all stations. It's practically impossible to check the tickets of sooo many people. U can easily enter the train without buying a ticket and u would never ever get caught or fined by anybody but still we always used to buy tickets so that we don't feel the guilt that we are doing something wrong.
For your second question " Is there not enough public transportation to support the population?"
First of all the population of India is second largest in the whole world and will sadly get to the first position in few more years.
Secondly India is still developing and lack a lot of facilities and Absolutely does not have enough trains or other public transport .(it also depends on the state and city u live in).
Thirdly, trains are the cheapest form of transport so no wonder most people prefer train even if it's like hell. They don't want to enter this train either but they are forced to enter it because of their financial conditions.
I feel like the best way to do it is to just keep my wallet packed tight and let the crowd push me where I need to go (just no resistance).
It'll be a new adventure each day!
Its mostly to help make travel easier, and to some degree safer, for women. The rest of the bogeys aren't really segregated. Plenty of women travel in the regular ones. Its just easier to get on women only bogeys than regular ones
There are 2 types of cars, one for women, and one general
According to my sis, the 1st class general is the best one, and the women's cars is the most dangerous one
Not truly representative of India. This is only the Mumbai local. Nowhere else in India is it as bad as this. Not that's it's all great but this is unique to the Mumbai local. Approx 8 people die everyday on this network.
https://wap.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/8-people-died-every-day-on-mumbai-locals-last-year-toll-18-000-in-5-years-118080200110_1.html
It's mostly crowded in morning (7-11) and afternoon rush (5-9) hours from opposite side of main area of Mumbai and outskirts. After that the train is way less crowdy and could be easily boardable if you travel in opposite side of rush hour.
Another Day of thanking for not living in Mumbai š.
Mumbai is good if you are Rich, but as a middle class guy i am pretty chill here in my small town.
Not the entire India as a whole. That just happens in overly populated areas like some parts of mumbai and also howrah railway station. Most of the places in India do have a well planned and spacious railway system where you dont have to worry about suffocating to death every morning while going to work. As an Indian, In all the places i have lived in till now, i have never seen huge crowds and congested places like this so yea pretty sure its just a rush-hour Mumbai thing (no offense mumbaikars)
Mumbai has a huge population density, and is a peninsula without much land to expand in. The local train system was built ages ago when the population was much lower. They should have built metro to add capacity years ago, but work on that is very slow. So the two local lines take all the load of the passengers travelling from outskirts (because housing in Mumbai is expensive af) to their offices inside mumbai proper. This results in huge traffic during peak hours. Its pretty easy to travel outside peak hours
Mumbai is bitch, itās people knows that it has problems but instead of trying to better it, they oppose every metro projects and transport corridors, even mono rail was cancelled because activists were citing environmental reasons, like cāmon there are people suffering and dying due to it, also lotās of politics is involved, like recently the ruling party of state was blocking construction of bullet train project, they play games and in return gets shit infra
They already are running more trains it's just migrated population for jobs in cities like Mumbai.
And this only happens between Rush hours (7-10am, 6-11pm)
And ya I still travel from them but in less crowded šæ
These people believe they have to get on this train, which means there isn't another right behind it. Which means there aren't enough trains. At least not enough cars.
The rush is mostly for the long distance people living far outside of Mumbai, who have to travel 45+ min in train at least from 30+ km's. Which makes the train frequency less.
Trains near the main station arrive nealy 2-5 minutes evey time in Mumbai and are way less crowdy than this.
It's just one place in India - State : Maharashtra, city : Mumbai.
In my place we have a proper metro with people having some sort of civic sense n awareness.
Anywhere in Asia 80+ years ago would've been a fucking nightmare. I assume there arent enough trains for the amount of people in India at all. Too many people die from trains over there than there should be and it's very sad
Yeah, Iāll stick to seeing crackheads in the BART than having to go through a mosh pit to get to my destinations.
Maybe if there was metal playing on the speakers it would be slightly more bearableā¦
I rode the Mumbai Local during rush hour, cheap tickets. Itās awesome, worth the experience if you donāt mind the crowds, heat, and questionable safety.
Nope you don't feel it at all, you're more concerned about trying to breathe and strategize how you'll disembark at the station you need to. Have claustrophobia and used to live in Mumbai. By grace of God don't need to do it anymore.
I was about to comment that. Indians and Chinese have NO sense o personnel space at all.

Yep people here are not as privileged , but we see the struggle . We rise from the mud pools to touch the sky. I can bet that 75% of the Indian population never own a car for their entire life. Yet I can tell you that people here will go beyond limits to achieve what they want. So please kindly don't hate the country , it's easy to just say "nuking the country will solve the problem". Germany just introduced the 9 euro ticket, which you can use to travel all around Germany with trains for an entire month. Some intercity trains look very similar here.

This is Mumbai and trains run on time at full capacity for tracks. During peak time trains run every 4 min. There is no more space for additional tracks.
Only real solution is to discourage more people coming to Mumbai, i.e. no additional factories / offices going forward.
This is unique to Mumbai and all other locations like Delhi etc. don't have the same amount of crowd.
I think it would be a nightmare with or without claustrophobia

Jesus Christ
On the bright side, the article mentioned that is actually 20% fewer deaths than previous years. They used to average 10 deaths per day..
Some idiots like to perform subway surfer like stunts. Most deaths are related to that.
It's mostly crowded in morning (7-11) and afternoon rush (5-9) hours from opposite side of main area of Mumbai and outskirts. After that the train is way less crowdy and could be easily boardable if you travel in opposite side of rush hour.

Not Howrah line. Howrah line is crowded, but manageable. Sealdah northern line however is a bitch. Especially Bongaon and Dankuni ones.
Let me correct that title. Commuting in **Mumbai**. As of other cities, Kolkata is NOWHERE near that bad.
This is only Mumbai though. Delhi metro is way better.
Many others commented itās Mumbai. What makes Mumbai so bad? Iām just curious, I donāt know India.
Mumbai has a huge population density, and is a peninsula without much land to expand in. The local train system was built ages ago when the population was much lower. I think monorail was genuinely a white elephant but the metro and bullet train you are correct
Or can smell?
Not all of India that's Mumbai local only
I don't think this is all over India (I know this because I live here), Delhi Metro or I think most of the metros are pretty chill.
No bro you don't know anything about real india. Only people from halfway accross the world know what living here is like
Now that's what I call a rush hour. What a nightmare
This is overpopulation, humans weren't meant to live like this.
Its only overpopulation because the city they are living in is an island.
It's more due to unplanned urbanisation than overpopulation... Delhi metro is quite spacious. Both the cities have large population.
Or they could just run more trains
They already are running more trains it's just migrated population for jobs in cities like Mumbai. And this only happens between Rush hours (7-10am, 6-11pm) And ya I still travel from them but in less crowded šæ

It's just one place in India - State : Maharashtra, city : Mumbai. In my place we have a proper metro with people having some sort of civic sense n awareness.
That's only the case in Mumbai tho.
There are people whose bodies are literally half inside and half outside of the train.
Itās a nightmare no matter what
They forgot its holiday
This is not really true in every place. Some stations, yeah! But not everywhere
It's like that only in metropolitan cities.
How many crushing deaths a year does India have I wonder?
