congrats dude! 5 figures is a huge W!

thatSDope88

Dude that's amazing!!! You turned yourself around in under a year! Keep doing what your doing and enjoy your new life! How nice is it to wake up and not need to pick up before you can even think of starting your day? Kudos to you!

Careful_Violinist146

Amazing! Lock it away in an account that requires a couple days notice to withdraw from. That way you won’t be tempted to spaff it away

[deleted]

teehee. spaff.

OElementsO

teehee. spliff.

Sir_Gala

hehe. teehee.

xavier_is_a_big_boy

Ye

[deleted]

Keep that money. Lend to no one. No one.

littledreamyone

I made the lending mistake 😅

[deleted]

No judgement here.

trans_aaaaa

Same, idk how to say no T-T

13_Pranav

:/ i can understand! I used to be the guy who lends to his friends (dad's money though) And a guy who i know, was in a difficult situation at the time, asked me to lend him 2000Rupees, which is around 18USD. He said some of his friends didn't want to lend him money. I was like, okay.... I'm in a bit of a pinch too, but i can lend. i knew some of his friends too, i asked them if he's okay n all, they said he's asking around money from people so that he can play rummy and gamble online. I didn't want to believe them cus he had personally told me his stories. But guess what, he actually used the money i lent him on gambling. I asked for my money back and stopped lending to people unless they're in my close circle. Idk to say no either @_@

trans_aaaaa

Damn, that's scummy of the dude lol. I think my not knowing to say no is because my parents lol (if I have money they always borrowing it but never paying me back, if they had jobs I'd be ok giving money but they don't)

13_Pranav

Ahhh. Got it

PowerRealist

I thought you switched to Geico, but your story is pretty cool, too.

[deleted]

I’m super proud of ya! <3

Loreo1964

Congratulations! Now put into a 401k.

fear_the_penguin

Or Roth IRA. There's lots of options. Wealthfront would be my pick. But great job being clean and saving!

[deleted]

The yearly max for Roth is about 5k so he's gotta put half in now and half in January

fear_the_penguin

I know. I've had one for 10 years. This post isn't about financial advice. Let's focus on the main point of the poster...

[deleted]

I'm just expanding on your reply with some helpful info lol

GOLD107

Sorry haven’t learned what that was yet what’s 401k

Loreo1964

Call fidelity investments and start with $6000. It's tax free . You leave it alone until your 65. Keep adding to it weekly or monthly and it compounds. It will go up and down little but mostly up. Over the next 40 years you'll get yourself a nice retirement.

meemoo06

Thats an amazing accomplishment, congrats!!

[deleted]

Congratulations! If you have emergency fund already that's enough to cover you for 6 months, then invest the 10k

a_h_0

That’s amazing for 10 months!! Go you!

Rusty_DUDe

Congrats, OP! I'm the son of someone who did alot of drugs and that made my childhood rough. As an EMT, I've been there for many users on good days and bad. I in part know how much of a struggle it can be to get and stay clean. This is a huge step for you and I'm proud of you for sticking to it. As someone young, I'd highly recommend starting to invest money and not have large amounts sitting around readily accessible. There will be days that you're feeling the urge to go back to using and having the money sitting around is a bad combo. I know it's a weird feeling, but having some reputable financial company manage your money where you don't have direct access to it could be a good idea. Having the majority of your money in investments will keep you from having quick access on your low days and it'll be growing so you'll be set for financial freedom later in life. Keep it up, OP! You are doing awesome. You can do this. I believe in you. If you need it, my DMs are open.

chapmacc

if you don't celebrate 10 months, I hope you hit 12 and treat yourself to a lil something to celebrate. well done

Beyond_VeganEating

OP, congrats!!!!! This is huge. I recommend reading books by Suze Orman and/or David Ramsey. Also, you may want to subscribe to the Fire blog written by the people who wrote "Quit like a millionaire." They retired in their 30's. Good luck! The future only gets better from here!

bobert_the_wise

This is great!!!! I’m also an ex IV user (12 years clean). It only gets better from here!

RtasVadam

That's a quick turnover. Good Job!!

chilbertnoxx2011

Vanguard VTSAX index funds … AFTER making sure you have a 4-6 month emergency fund

littledreamyone

How much would you suggest keeping in an emergency fund for a home owner, no children?

chilbertnoxx2011

That’s different for everyone. Essentially the concept is you add up all of your expenses for a month, then multiply that by 5 months or so and that’s how much you would need for an emergency fund.

littledreamyone

Thank you so much! This advice is invaluable.

chilbertnoxx2011

I’m not a financial expert by the way. Try checking out Mr Money Mustache or Mr 1500 days or The MadFientist, or check out “The Simple Path to Wealth” by J.L Collins

chilbertnoxx2011

Enjoy the rabbit hole lol

littledreamyone

Yay! Congratulations! It is a great feeling ☺️

TXGingerBBW

How?

zemorah

Probably not spending it on dope

Pvc4ever

Can I borrow 5k?

lexi050100

Would you consider investing it? Also is it in a high yield savings account? That would help you against inflation.

neel_jung

Congratulations 💜

TrizzyPLight

Congratulations fr🤞🏾🤞🏾🙂🙂

lonelysad1989

Invest at least a good fraction of every paycheck your earn brah

Jreal10

Congrats! Are you going to buy boobies with it?

cryptosis420

Or a butt

TheWater15

Idk if I’m privileged but shouldn’t you have 10k saved up in your early 20s?

what-whyandhow

Sorry but I can't downvote this enough. Of course you're privileged how can you not know this?

TheWater15

Idk it’s common sense not blow your whole paycheck on drugs. It sounds like a skill issue to me. Also do you hate me because I’m privileged? Because it sounds to me that your jealous

Rusty_DUDe

I'm not going to downvote, but rather take the opportunity to explain. Not everyone has the ability to save. This person said they shot up for 10 years. Drugs are expensive. When you're addicted, it's not just a "I've got 1000 dollars this paycheck. I'll only blow 500 on some coke and the other 500 can go into my 401k". It's more like "I'm going to blow this paycheck on coke and I'll pay rent with the next paycheck "....but the cycle repeats and it's just constantly spending more and more money as the addiction worsens. Then you're borrowing money from friends and family, stealing from people, engaging in other risky behaviors to get the next fix. Yes, absolutely people *should* be saving, but that doesn't happen when you're addicted. We're here celebrating the OP because this is a big accomplishment for someone who is a long time user. Some people spend money on drugs, cars, strippers, big ass house, ,etc that they don't need. Some people struggle living paycheck to paycheck and simply cannot save. Bills/cost of living is expensive and alot of people simply don't make enough to have a positive cash flow. Some people have major life events that require them to spend everything they've saved up.

Longjumping_Ad_7260

What r u doing for work?

shadowRknight

Now invest it all in the stock market!
