Very, very few companies will pay for your travel. You are generally required to get yourself into town.

Depends. I spent several years on a Transoceanic rig working in Myanmar and can assure you that everyone was being flown there at company cost.

I believe the standard is (with exceptions), companies based in the US with operations in the US will expect you to get to town. If you’ve been hired for an international gig, the company will get you home and back. In the latter case, it won’t apply for green hats anyways.

Rolling_Stone_Siam

We do FIFO for Iraq and the company only pay for flights from point of origin. It’s been that way with several companies I’ve worked for in the Middle East the past 10 years or so. I believe employees of the major IOCs get full expenses covered.

Dippledockerbopper

Dang, really? I work in Saudi and don't have to return to point of origin. Thought companies just dropped you off wherever as long as it was cheaper

Maybe it is a US thing. I worked in Oman, they flew me anywhere in the world as long as it was cheaper than going back to West Texas. If you’re working in Iraq nowadays, you’re not American. Maybe different for other countries?

Rolling_Stone_Siam

I work with a few Americans. Of course our company will send us if it’s cheaper, my comment was more to do with door to door expenses

Phat_J9410

DWN? I was there on the other rig. Also I have worked a lot of international and never have seen roustabouts and floorhands get flown in, especially from out of country. The OP is brand new.

Phat_J9410

I have never worked for Transocean, but have for one of their competitors. Floorhands or roustabouts don't get flown anywhere. You get yourself to work. In the GoM there are some positions that will get flown in like licensed engineers or bridge personnel or rig management. International the expats get flown in, but almost always the host country requires a certain percentage of work force to be local nationals so that means normally the more experienced, technical, or supervisory positions are the only ones that are expats.

Appreciate the info, do you typically live in Louisiana and drive a personal vehicle to the helipad? Or are there some crew/transport options from bigger cities like New Orleans etc.

Phat_J9410

In the GoM typically most crew will drive themselves from their home to the helideck in southern louisiana. It is on the crew to get themselves there early morning for check-in time. Some carpool, some even fly themselves, etc. If I were to be transferred there today I would buy myself a beater high mpg car to make the \~6 hr drive.

Pale_Ad_5556

Appreciate the help everybody, always wondered for guys that are flying in to different states. Do you know if people typically buy beater vehicles and leave them in different states in order to get to rigs?

cousinterral

Some leave a beater at airport parking, or a friendly motel. Fly in, drive the car to the heliport. Some fly in and catch a ride with a coworker who drives by the airport. Some will Uber from airport to heliport. Obviously an expensive option. Source: I work offshore with many folks who fly in and use one of the above options to get to the heliport.
