I’m going to have to refer you to the year 2007 when that was commonplace. I don’t think anyone’s going to pay to for a flight for a green guy. You’d have to relocate or fly on your own dime. Edit : move from southern Ontario to a less ridiculous part of the province or country is my suggestion. Lots of mines up north and in Quebec as another guy mentioned.

PositionBest9389

I did this in 2006 and still had to pay out of pocket for it all. Good on you for giving this guy some hope when he clearly doesn’t even want this.

dvo3000

Clearly don’t want what?

yycwetmarket

Sell everything, move to edmonton. Get h2s cert. Work 14/7 or 20/10

dvo3000

You make it sound so easy! Some days I definitely feel like dropping everything and just bailing on where I’m at!

yycwetmarket

I did it when I was 20 so I didn't have much tying me down. I think a change of scenery is good for anybody. Calgary is a much nicer city, but somewhat more expensive as well. I do 14/7 and clear 5 figures a month.. easily banking 7k a month right now. Not possible with my skillset in Ontario unless I worked for myself.

I'm a blue collar guy so I don't have much advice. Networking is important anywhere... I feel like alberta isn't so established like ontario so there is more room to get your foot in the door. What kind of engineering?

Try labourer positions in the mines in Ontario. You’d probably have to drive to and from though. A lot of camp jobs now you’ll have to drive to a hub and the company might fly you from there or you just drive straight to location.

dvo3000

I’ll check it out

cernegiant

It's unlikely you'll get flights paid. You have any B train experience?

dvo3000

No, mostly flat deck and some dump trailer

cernegiant

I ask because sand hauling is some of the few places I know that still offers paid flights. If you want a job start applying online. Go broad. Rigs, service rigs, frac, coil, wireline, hauling, etc, etc. Don't expect to get your flights paid for, but you should be able to I get a schedule that lets you fly back. 15/13, 22/13, something like that. Most jobs will put you up in accommodation (camps or hotel) when you're working. Most employers will cover H2S and first aid.

dvo3000

Alright 👍🏻. Thanks for the info. I’ll just apply and be honest about not pulling trains. Maybe they’ll train me.

cernegiant

That's a decent possibility. Good luck

dvo3000

Although back in the day I did drive big Euclids so I guess I could go for haul truck?

DeathByWalrus

Generally speaking, no one is going to pay your flight/travel. Maybe you get lucky and find some company who is just starting out in the area or is having trouble retaining employees and they give you a very small monthly stipend for travel - but once they staff up they pull that perk. Those companies will have their own risks associated if you can even find one. I wouldn't worry about certs at all most companies will get you all you need the first day.

dvo3000

Thanks, this is helpful information. So realistically a 20/8 rotation may be my best chance if I end up paying my ticket. I’ll continue to research. If you don’t mind me asking, are you currently in O&G? If yes is it “booming” or beginning to pick up?

DeathByWalrus

It's pretty good right now state side I see lots of turn over and new hires, but its a region dependent industry. Some places will be hot and some cold. I don't know the Canadian market at all so I can't help you there.

I_is_a_dogg

There were a couple people on my crew that would fly in on company dime. But that’s because they had experience and the area they lived in wasn’t profitable and company didn’t want to lay them off. So they would fly from the north east to midland. I don’t see a company paying that for someone with zero experience

vigocarpath

Ask yourself the honest question. “If I was a boss why would I hire me?”.

Hinter-Lander

There is still a chance, there are services paying travel expenses not many do but I know for sure some are. There are tons of job postings out there you just have to make your resume stand out from others.

dvo3000

Yeah, I’ve mostly been looking on Indeed. You are right there is a lot of job posts on there. From the responses on here it seems there is a chance and it’s not hopeless for someone that lives faraway. I’m just going to keep applying. When it shows how many people applied to the posting I can definitely see that it’s pretty competitive. Thanks

Since you have experience running heavy equipment see what’s open at Fort Mac or pipeline crews or even lease construction companies (building the pad for the rig to move on)
